Marcos to hold bilateral talks with Trump in US visit

President Ferdinand. Marcos Jr. is scheduled to hold his first bilateral meeting with United States President Donald Trump during a visit that is seen to further strengthen Manila's alliance with Washington, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on July 18, 2025. In a pre-departure press briefing in Malacañang, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for American Affairs Raquel Solano said that Marcos would be in the US from July 20 to 22 upon the invitation of Trump. Solano said that Marcos was the first head of state of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations to be invited to visit the US and to hold a meeting with the US president.

00:00As previously announced, President Ferdinand R. Marcos will embark on an official visit to Washington, D.C.
00:07from July 20 to July 22, 2020 prior upon the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:15President Marcos is the first ASEAN head of state to be invited to visit the United States
00:21and to hold a meeting with President Trump since the latter took office earlier this year.
00:26The purpose of this visit is to further strengthen the Philippines-United States alliance,
00:33to proactively engage the U.S. in all aspects of the relations,
00:37and seize opportunities for greater security and economic optimization.
00:42We will continue to underscore that for the Philippines to be a truly strong partner for the United States,
00:49we need to be stronger economically as well.
00:52Highlights of the President's visit include his bilateral meeting with President Trump,
00:59as well as separately with State Secretary Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hexel.
01:05Despite the short visit, several U.S. businesses have requested to meet with him,
01:11and he agreed to accommodate him,
01:13since these businesses are already in the process of investing in the Philippines.
01:18During the visit, the two leaders will discuss closer cooperation in economic, defense,
01:26and security matters of common interest.
01:29As you are all aware, the President's official visit also aims to address the U.S. tariff proposed to be levied on Philippine exports.
01:38The two presidents are also expected to discuss regional and international issues of common concern,
01:45and how to further strengthen people-to-people ties.
01:49As the Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, in 2026,
01:55the President will invite President Trump to attend the East Asia Summit.
02:00Coincidentally, our two countries will mark 80 years of our diplomatic relations and 75 years of the alliance next year.
