00:00of a life whose affairs will be fed for generations.
00:07We make to honor a man whose presence was commanded is very new,
00:17whose voice once summoned the best in all,
00:22and whose conviction never doubt.
00:27Even the strongest means of public opinion,
00:34President Mahmoud Gwari, G.C.F.R.,
00:38former head of state and former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
00:44has gone to rest.
00:50He was forced among soldiers in war,
00:57forced among citizens in peace,
01:01and forced without ambition or flattery in the heart of his fellow citizens.
01:10Yet, it was in the quiet and unadombed settings of his private life that his true greatness was revealed.
01:23Pious without show, just without cruelty,
01:34humane without sentimentality,
01:38temperate without coldness,
01:40and sincere without God.
01:44Steady in worship and spirit.
01:49Dignified in bearing and commanding in his very presence.
01:56His example guided all who surrounded him.
02:01Still, it endures.
02:05To his peers, he was respectful and without pretense.
02:14To those who sat under him, he was kind, without condensation.
02:22And to those whom he loved most intimately, he was unfailingly tender, loyal, and good.
02:36His life was a rebook to vice and a revenge for virtue.
02:44The purity of his private character gave radiance to the discipline and integrity of his public service.
02:56Even in death, he maintained the serenity that defined him in life.
03:03Not a sigh, not a groan, just a quiet submission to the will of God.
03:13Such was the man Nigeria has lost.
03:18Such was the man for whom our nation now mourns.
03:23President Pohari's life was one of the austere honor.
03:32He stood always ramrod straight, unmoved by the temptation of power.
03:40Unseduced by applause and or afraid of the loneliness that often faces those who do what is right.
03:55Rather than what is popular, it was a quiet courage.
04:02A righteousness that never announced itself.
04:07Its patriotism was lived more in action than in words.
04:17His life traced the arc of Nigeria's journey.
04:21Born before the independence, he became a young soldier in the struggle to keep our nation old.
04:33In war and in peace, he served with the vigilance and determination as if the task of watching over Nigeria has been assigned to him alone.
04:48From the battlefield to the corridors of power, he remained faithful to the task.
04:57He governed the northeastern state and stood as head of state.
05:05Years later, his return to chair the petroleum trust fund, which he administered with spartan rigor and complete fidelity to the public good.
05:22Yet, with all that he had achieved, his most enduring legacy would be carved in democracy.
05:32In a time when men had lost hope that change was possible,
05:38Mama Dubwari put his faith in the people of his country.
05:45We stood together, he and I, alongside others, drawn from across the political spectrum, regions and tongues.
06:00We formed an alliance that enabled Nigeria to experience the first true democratic transfer of power from one ruling party to another.
06:14When he was sworn in as our party's first elected president, he led with restraint, governed with dignity and all the burden of the leadership without complaint.
06:33Those who knew him most intimately understood that the authority of that exiled office never changed him.
06:46In the face of pressure, he remained calm.
06:52In the face of crisis, he remained resolute.
06:57In the face of triumph, he remained modest.
07:02Most remarkably, he retained his jovial spirit.
07:08When his dinner ended, he returned to Odara, not to command from the shadows or to hold court,
07:20but to live as he always had, never seeking to impose his will,
07:27but content to let others carry the nation forward.
07:36President Buari was not a perfect man, no leader is,
07:43but he was, in every sense of the word, a good man, a decent man, an honorable man.
07:54His record will be debated as all legacies are,
08:01but the character he brought to public life, the moral force he carried,
08:10the incorruptible standard he presented will not be forgotten.
08:16His was a life lived in full service to Nigeria and in fidelity to God.
08:24Now he rests.
08:29And we, who remain must carry the memory of life as a standard to guide us.
08:36Let us honor him, not only with words, but with humility in power,
08:43discipline in service, compassion in governance, and fearlessness in the pursuit of justice.
