00:23A tidal wave of tiki culture surged onto the American shores in the 1950s
00:29as restaurants, cocktails, movies, TV shows, music, and fashion altering inspiration from the South Seas.
00:35In 1963, a tiki wave splashed into Adventureland with the debut of the Enchanted Tiki Room.
00:41As fun and timely as the tiki theme was at its opening,
00:45the Tiki Room's real significance was its advancement in audio-animatronic technology.
00:50In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room
00:53Hello-ah. It is showtime now in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.
01:00Julie, I think you know our fine-feathered friend here,
01:05Jose, the host of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland?
01:09Yes, I've seen him many times there.
01:11Jose, Julie's been selected to represent Disneyland as Miss Tencenio.
01:17Do you approve?
01:18Thank you, Jose.
01:22Buenos dias, senorita.
01:23You know, the same scientific equipment that guides rockets to the moon
01:28is used to make Jose and his little friends in the Tiki Room
01:32sing, talk, move, and practically think for themselves.
01:37I guess you could call him a creature of the space age.
01:41But why don't we let Jose speak for himself?
01:43Inside the Tiki Room, the audio-animatronic characters sing
01:47and move with sophisticated subtlety
01:49just a few feet over the 200 pairs of watchful eyes.
01:53The 17-minute show, later tightened to 15,
01:56showcases 225 moving birds,
01:59drumming Tiki figures,
02:00chanting Tiki Basque,
02:02and singing blossoms,
02:03all within an air-conditioned tropical hut
02:05where fountains bubble inside,
02:07a rainstorm rages outside,
02:09and an elaborate bird mobile
02:11ascends from the ceiling.
02:12The songs included Hawaiian war chant
02:15and the sing-along
02:16Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing.
02:18Hosting the festivities are
02:19Fritz, Jose, Michael, and Pierre,
02:22four wisecracking audio-animatronic macaws
02:24of international heritage.
02:26The birds themselves still appear incredibly lifelike
02:28thanks to their varied movements
02:30and real feathers.
02:32The lively presentation has brought glowing reviews,
02:34especially in its first decades.
02:36A 1963 issue of National Geographic
02:39called Tiki Room a tremendous show
02:41and gave it over two pages
02:43and three big photos.
02:44The Tiki Room is actually a scaled-down version
02:46of what had been originally planned.
02:48Designers first envisioned a restaurant
02:50with an after-dinner bird show,
02:52but when the plan proved to be unworkable,
02:54the entertainment was expanded
02:55to an entire attraction.
02:57Another novelty
02:58was the initial ticket pricing.
03:00Guests didn't need the usual A to E tickets,
03:03but rather a separate 75-cent Tiki ticket.
03:06By the mid-60s,
03:07admission to the hut
03:07had changed to an E ticket.
03:09United Airlines took over sponsorship
03:11of the Tiki Room from 1964 to 1973,
03:14followed by Dole Pineapple from 1976 onward.
03:18Dole added a preview show video
03:20about pineapples
03:21and also began sponsoring
03:22the Tiki Juice Bar next door.
03:25After years of neglect,
03:26a major renovation in 2005
03:28upgraded the Tiki Room's
03:29interior and exteriors.
03:31The Orta Thomas of Haunted Mansion fame
03:33and Harriet Burns
03:34were the Imagineers
03:35who furred the original Tiki Birds.
03:37The four birds that host
03:38the Tiki Room are named
03:39Michael with an Irish accent
03:41voiced by Fulton Burley
03:42of Golden Horseshoe fame,
03:44Fritz with a German accent
03:45voiced by Thurl Ravenscroft
03:48of Haunted Mansion fame,
03:50Pierre with a French accent
03:51voiced by Ernie Newton,
03:53Jose with a Hispanic accent
03:56voiced by Wally Bogue
03:57of Golden Horseshoe fame,
03:59Barker Bird is voiced by Wally Bogue.
04:02From Steve Birnbaum
04:03brings you the best
04:04of Disneyland 1982.
04:05Introduced in 1963,
04:07this is the first
04:08of the audio-animatronic attractions
04:10and the precursor
04:11of more elaborate renditions
04:13such as Great Moments
04:14with Mr. Lincoln.
04:15This 17-minute show
04:16functions in a vaguely
04:17Polynesian complex
04:19at the entrance to Adventureland,
04:21next door to the Tahitian Terrace,
04:23and is vintage Disney.
04:25Yet it is fresh as ever
04:26with its four MCs,
04:28Jose, Michael, Pierre, and Fritz,
04:30its sextant of pastel-plumed,
04:32long-eyelashed parrots,
04:34Colette, Fifi, Gigi, Josephine,
04:37Mimi, and Suzette,
04:38and its course of 54 orchids,
04:40four carved tiki poles,
04:42twelve tiki drummers,
04:43twenty-four singing masks,
04:45sixty-four birds-of-paradise flowers,
04:47seven birds-of-paradise,
04:49eight macaws,
04:50twelve toucans,
04:51nine fork-tail birds,
04:52six cockatoos,
04:54and several others.
04:55The 225 performers
04:57all sing and whistle
04:58and drum up a tropical storm
05:00with such animation
05:01that it's hard to resist a smile.
05:03The voice of Michael
05:04belongs to Fulton Burley,
05:05who plays the Irish tenor
05:07proprietor at Frontierland's
05:09Golden Horseshoe Saloon.
05:10Jose is played by Wally Bogue,
05:12another long-time
05:13Golden Horseshoe star,
05:14whose name careful observers
05:16have probably noted
05:17on the main street window
05:18above the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor.
05:20The music includes
05:21In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room,
05:24the show's theme song.
05:25The Hawaiian War Chant,
05:26let's all sing
05:27Farewell and Aloha to You.

10:13Here is now the electric power, this is the big boss, he directs everything.
10:19Brain of big boss is here, it is called programmer. Inside is running the tape, it tells us when to talk, sing and even to breathe.
10:28This is muscle assisting all kinds of relays on this panel. They make the cockatoo head turn left and right, make the flower to open and the tiki gods sing.

10:43Audio AC rectifies the pulsating DC, dries the solenoid in the bird's beaks, the flower, the mouse and the etc. and the chow.
