Long-term Labor Government offers opportunities for ag, says Cattle Australia CEO

00:00It looks like we're going to have a Labor government for three terms, nine years.

00:04What challenges and opportunities does that present for the agricultural sector?

00:09Well, I think federally, given the majority of the Labor Party had,

00:13there's every chance they'll win the next two elections,

00:15but that's for the population to decide.

00:19But I think that by having a government that's in for a period of time,

00:22there actually are opportunities for agriculture in that.

00:25And by that I mean that governments who tend to be settled,

00:28tend to be a little more future-focused

00:30and tend to be focused on actually creating good long-term policy.

00:34And I think if we're able to develop strong policy

00:39coming out of agricultural organisations that makes sense,

00:43that develops our rural and regional communities

00:45and also continues the prosperity of our food production systems,

00:49then I think that's a real positive.

00:51And so, you know, whilst I know for some people and some of our members

00:55that the prospect of this government being in charge

00:59for a number of years is a bit of a challenge,

01:01I think there's a real genuine opportunity there.

01:04Now, you did say also that disunity is death.

01:07What do you mean by that?

01:08Well, what I mean is that as agricultural organisations,

01:11we need to get on the same page

01:12and we need to be saying the same things to government.

01:15And that's part of good policy development

01:16that we're going to need going forward

01:18if we're hoping to influence some of these longer-term policies

01:21that clearly this government has in mind.
