00:00Jacky Murrell with final instructions.
00:06Watch the low blows, watch the hold, and watch the heads, alright?
00:10Touch them up, good luck to both of you.
00:13Four miles, MMA division!
00:15This one just about to get underway.
00:17Our first fight of the night here at Middle City Mayhem.
00:20Once again, Michael Parenti joined by Sucua Ray Oliveira.
00:23In the black trunks, Ray, we've got Johnny Rodrigo Dos Santos.
00:25As we mentioned, a pro MMA fighter with 17 fights under his belt.
00:30And Ray, we've seen a lot of MMA fighters transition into boxing.
00:32What's the thing that stands out the most?
00:34Is there a common trait among those fighters?
00:36You want to see, you know, when they come out there,
00:38they're going to come out square, so they throw a punch.
00:40Do they keep switching lefty to righty?
00:43You know, it's very unconditional for a boxer to do that.
00:47But I've been learning to, you know, add it into my repertoire.
00:50Because it can help you.
00:51It can hurt you, but it also can help you get the right coach.
00:55Brian Long again.
00:56You can see right now that, you know, Johnny's not switching.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Which means he's been doing some boxing in there.
01:05Just had his first pro boxing match in March,
01:07went four rounds with Wade Ferrier, lost by unanimous decision.
01:11And again, we mentioned Brian Long with his pro debut last week,
01:14last Friday, 31 seconds.
01:15So he's already gone longer tonight than he did in his debut.
01:18Yeah.
01:20Because he figured he's in town and that man can pick up a fight.
01:22Sure.
01:23Might not pick up two.
01:24Nice combinations here by Long as he backs Losantos into the corner.
01:31Once again, this is the first of seven fights here on Swerve Combat tonight.
01:35C.S. Boxing brings you Mill City Mayhem.
01:38We're live in Lowell, Mass.
01:40A lot of history here, Ray, for boxing.
01:42I've fought here plenty of times.
01:46Now, it's the home to the New England Golden Gloves, correct?
01:49Yes.
01:50They're definitely all the Golden Gloves here.
01:52Marvin Hagler fought here.
01:54Uh, Vinny Pass fought here.
01:57I fought here.
01:58Mickey Ward fought here.
02:00Name it.
02:00We all fought here.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Lowell always has had a rich boxing tradition.
02:04It's good to see pro boxing back in the Mill City.
02:08And we're in for a great one tonight.
02:11Long putting in some good work here in this opening round.
02:14I like Long a lot.
02:15He comes at you.
02:16I like the name, Bone Breaker.
02:18You know, he comes out.
02:19You think he's going to come out and just throw bombs.
02:20But no, he's working.
02:22He's working his way in with that jab.
02:23And I love that right uppercut he's throwing.
02:25At the end of the day, this could be a productive trip for Long to the United States.
02:31Got a couple of wins under his belt if he wins this match.
02:33Go back home to Ireland.
02:34Continue the training.
02:35Continue the process.
02:36Nice left hand there by Long.
02:37And a bit of a late bloomer as a pro.
02:4331 years of age.
02:44So he's got some catching up to do with some other pros.
02:48As you know, Ray, if you've got a good repertoire, you look the part, you go out there and you
02:52fight and you're willing to fight on short notice or get in there quickly, you can build up pretty quickly.
02:57Yeah.
02:57And, you know, with Long, you know, he didn't just come out and take a fight.
03:01He didn't have time to look to see who he's fighting.
03:03You know, what kind of career this guy got.
03:05Yes, he's MMA, but he has, what was it, 14 MMA fights?
03:09Yeah.
03:09So he's not fighting a slouch out there.
03:14And Dos Santos can punch.
03:15He had a knockout win in an MMA bout against Everett Desilets.
03:18If you remember Everett Desilets, who's a champion wrestler in college, actually has fought both
03:23MMA and boxing for CES.
03:25That's a pretty impressive win, no matter what platform it was on.
03:28Definitely is.
03:30And there's the belt for round number one.
03:31So, Ray, good opening round for Brian Long.
03:33Looked sharp early on.
03:34Oh, he definitely did.
03:35He controlled the whole round, you know.
03:37He backed up Dos Santos.
03:38You can't mention, not just Mickey, but Declan, his brother.
03:42That's right.
03:43Dickie Eklund.
03:44Yeah, Dickie Eklund.
03:45You know, their love throughout the city.
03:48Mickey still works here.
03:50You can see him, you know.
03:51He tells the story of he's working with somebody.
03:53And they, if you're like Mickey Ward, I am.
03:55And, of course, you'll remember the movie The Fighter, based on the story of Mickey Ward.
04:01Dickie Eklund also featured heavily in that movie.
04:03And then many years later on the New England circuit, Dickie Eklund's nephew, Sean Eklund,
04:07was a pro for many years for CES.
04:09And, of course, Irish Joey McCready from Lowell, Mass, who was a former New England title holder,
04:13fought many wars for CES.
04:14So there's always been a rich history here in Lowell.
04:17And this is one step, Ray, as we see round two get underway,
04:20of bringing boxing back to the middle of the city where it belongs.
04:23Yeah, and they only said, you know, there's no, we mentioned all these fighters,
04:27and there's no boxing gym, no more in Lowell.
04:29That's crazy.
04:32Brian Long taking on Johnny Rodrigo Dos Santos.
04:35Long in the white trunks, Dos Santos in the black,
04:37and Long continues to put in some pretty good work here.
04:40Round two of his scheduled four-round bout.
04:42Worth mentioning on the scales yesterday,
04:44Dos Santos came in at 174, Long was 169.
04:48Looks like Long will typically fight at super middleweight for the most part.
04:51He definitely is, you know, but, you know, early in your career,
04:55they're close to my white weight, let me take the fight.
04:57You don't want to say no to the fight.
04:59You want to keep yourself busy in that, you know, like he started late in his career,
05:02so he's going to fight constantly, what he's doing right now.
05:04No, you're right, Ray.
05:05You'll notice that early in a fighter's career, a lot of fluctuating weights.
05:08Guys will fight maybe at super middle, at light heavyweight,
05:11wherever they get some action and get some fights in early.
05:13Yeah, you know, as the training starts, the weight either goes down,
05:17or you either put some muscle on.
05:18You feel where you feel comfortable.
05:20How long do you think it takes a fighter to really grow into his body
05:23and decide at what point, okay, this is my weight class?
05:26Every fight is different.
05:27It took me probably my career.
05:29See, I started off at 135 and then ended up staying at 140.
05:34And I was tall for both weight classes.
05:36I thought I should go 47, maybe 54, but I said, no, 40 was good for me.
05:41You know, it depends on the boxers, you know, how they eat, how they train,
05:46what their body fat is.
05:48I learned that with strength conditioning coaches.
05:50One minute to go here in round two.
05:54Again, this one's scheduled for four.
05:56It's our opening bout on Swerve Combat.
05:58Long is definitely working that body beautiful on Dos Santos.
06:02He's digging it hard and coming back to the head.
06:05And, Ray, the reason I ask about the weight and growing into the body
06:07is what happened with Keyshawn Davis not too long ago in the pro circuit.
06:10Keyshawn Davis took a fight, I believe, at 135, came in close to 140,
06:14and he was told, listen, he just outgrew the weight class.
06:17How quickly can that happen?
06:20Did it happen in that case with Keyshawn Davis?
06:22I'm not quite sure.
06:22It probably did happen.
06:23You know, a lot of fighters outgrow their weight.
06:27It's crazy.
06:29That's why I think what they should do in boxing is go back to what they used to
06:31in the olden days.
06:32What amateurs do now, the day you weigh in, the day you fight.
06:37Don't weigh in the day before, and then they get to put in all this weight,
06:41and then they get in that ring.
06:43And look what happened with Joey Gamache.
06:45Correct.
06:46You know, with Arturo Gatti.
06:47They were supposed to fight at, what, 140?
06:50Arturo Gatti walked in the ring probably 165.
06:53And some guys do put on a lot of weight the next day,
06:55and that creates what may be an unfair competitive advantage for that fighter.
06:59Yeah.
06:59People don't understand.
07:01I fought at 140, but my walk-around weight was 185.
07:04Wow.
07:05And I had to get down 45 pounds just to fight at 140.
07:09There's the bell for round number two.
07:11So far, so good for Brian Long.
07:13As we get halfway through this bout, take a look at some of the action here.
07:17You see Brian Long, he just comes.
07:20He comes forward, stands up tight, that left hook up top,
07:24and he goes right back down to that body.
07:26He's digging it.
07:27And the strange thing is, I'm looking at both fighters.
07:30Both are standing up in the corner.
07:32Yeah.
07:33And they're throwing punches in there, but at rest time, they're both standing in that corner.
07:38And it's not exactly a cool afternoon here.
07:41It's warm.
07:42It's hot in the city.
07:43It's muggy.
07:44It's definitely hot.
07:45They're talking about heat waves going through New England.
07:47And this is a particularly warm building, so it's going to be interesting to see.
07:50Perhaps as the sun sets at a certain point, maybe in a couple hours, it'll cool down a little bit.
07:55But you can see right now on your screen, right through the doors in the front of the arena,
07:59it is right outside.
08:00It is hot.
08:01And this is where you see the fight has a better condition.
08:04And this is also where the weight comes in.
08:06Yes.
08:07You know, you're losing a lot of weight.
08:08You get in the fights, and it's so hot in there.
08:11You're trying to put water in, and your body dehydrates.
08:14Round number three just about to get underway here.
08:16Brian Long in the white trunks taking on Johnny Rodrigo Dos Santos in the black.
08:20Michael Parenti in Sucra.
08:22Ray Oliveira bringing you all the action here on Swear of Combat.
08:25And, Ray, you mentioned the possibility of same-day weigh-ins.
08:28It's been a hot topic in boxing for quite some time.
08:30There have been some detractors who say it's dangerous for a fighter.
08:33But it does prohibit a fighter from maybe fighting at a weight class that he truly does not belong in,
08:38he or she does not belong in, makes you fight closer to your walk-around weight.
08:41Is that correct?
08:42Yeah.
08:42You know, people are saying it's dangerous.
08:44What's so dangerous about it?
08:45Is it more dangerous that a fighter weighs in the day before at 140
08:50and then walks into the ring the next day, 165?
08:53Yeah.
08:53Or is it dangerous that a fighter weighs 140 and walks in the ring?
08:58He weighs the day he fights and then walks in the ring probably three pounds heavier.
09:02Which one is more dangerous?
09:03I'd say walking in the ring 165 is dangerous when you're fighting at 140.
09:07And we've seen some tough weight cuts.
09:09We've seen weight cuts that really take their toll on fighters through the years
09:12and sometimes can land you in some hot water physically, mentally.
09:17So that is one solution to it.
09:18I'm with you.
09:19I've been on board with that for a long time, Ray, and I think I agree with you on that point.
09:22And we'll see sometime down the road if pro boxing, it's hard to regulate as a whole.
09:27Different commissions, different states have different rules.
09:29But it's not hurting the amateurs.
09:31No.
09:31So why would it hurt the pros?
09:33So a very interesting concept.
09:34Something to keep an eye on.
09:36And of course, keep an eye on here on Brian Long,
09:38who is trying to improve to 2-0 in just under seven days since his pro debut last week.
09:44What I like to see Sosanto doing is using some of his MMA tactics, you know, rough him up.
09:50Grab him, hold him.
09:51It's pro boxing.
09:53There's nothing wrong with doing that.
09:54No, and it's what makes these MMA fighters who are transitioning to boxing
09:57or just taking boxing matches in between.
09:59So what makes them so tough is the unpredictability of what they bring to the table.
10:03If you try to box a boxer and you're not a boxer, you're going to lose.
10:08Do Santos holding his own here against the highly touted Irish prospect, Brian Long.
10:18Do Santos keeps leaning his head to the right, which is giving Long advantage to let that right hand just drop down on him.
10:26But Do Santos is still pressuring him and trying to put his back on the ropes.
10:32Long versus Do Santos is the first of seven bouts tonight.
10:35And, of course, don't forget Rashidi Speedy Ellis in our main event.
10:40Francis Hogan in the co-main, both who are WBC U.S. Silver title holders, which we'll talk about a little later on.
10:46But you've got two guys with the belts coming in tonight.
10:49Non-title bouts, but important bouts nonetheless.
10:51You don't want to wear that belt and then get a loss.
10:56That's correct.
11:01He's got to put Long back on those ropes in roughhousing.
11:06We both fought it this far a week ago.
11:13No reason to run for him.
11:14That round there, I honestly gave it to Do Santos.
11:16He backed up Long.
11:19He put his back on the ropes.
11:20You see right here.
11:21Do Santos is coming forward and letting those hands grow.
11:25He's connecting with his right hand over the top.
11:28You know, maybe the fatigue is getting to either one of them.
11:30You know, you pick a round here.
11:31Brian Long trying to go to 2-0 regardless of what happens.
11:37A definite lesson here tonight.
11:39And you consider what happened in the first fight.
11:4031-second knockout.
11:42Hard to really take much from that.
11:44Hard to really evaluate what the fighter brings to the table when he gets in there so quickly and gets the guy out of there.
11:48But tonight, you're getting to see a little bit more here going into the fourth and final round.
11:52And Do Santos, even if he doesn't get the win, he's making long work.
11:55Oh, yeah.
11:55You know, you look at this and you go, ah.
11:59Honestly, Do Santos to lose.
12:03But Do Santos came in to fight.
12:04You know, he's a dangerous fighter in there.
12:06He's coming in.
12:07He has 17 MMA fights, so he's not going to stop in there.
12:11Long took this fight.
12:12I got him up right now.
12:12Do Santos.
12:13You know, if Do Santos wins this round here, it could be a draw.
12:18Round four about to get on the way.
12:20And, Ray, one thing you and I have always said is fighting is fighting.
12:22Whether it's MMA, whether it's boxing, no matter what platform, Do Santos is a veteran fighter.
12:27And that is something you have to respect.
12:30And, of course, I'm sure Brian Long does respect that.
12:33And you can see the work that he's put in, which is in the same way that he doesn't.
12:36But, of course, it's much tougher than it looks on paper.
12:40Everyone thinks they get there and do it.
12:42Like I say, you don't go on vacation and take boxing gloves or MMA gloves.
12:46You go on vacation and take tennis racket or golf clubs.
12:50Nice overhand right by Dos Santos.
12:53Yes, beautiful overhand right.
12:56Nice left by Long off the ropes.
13:00See, Long is coming forward.
13:03That's what he had to do before and put Long's back on those ropes.
13:07Both fighters are hook-happy.
13:17It's going to be, you know, we're going to land that hook first.
13:24As long as Eagle fighters are coming forward, I think they're winning this fight.
13:29Oh, a nice exchange.
13:31Definitely.
13:31Good combination from Dos Santos.
13:34I'll tell you, he's held his own in this fight.
13:35He's probably more than held his own if you really think about it.
13:38Yeah.
13:39Ray, you gave him round three.
13:41He's off to a pretty good start here in round four.
13:42This by no means is a walk in the park for Brian Long.
13:46He's really making them work.
13:50You're going to realize we're much tougher than we think beyond America.
13:54I'll tell you something else, too.
13:55Dos Santos, win or lose, I think establishes himself as someone who can be very serviceable on the local circuit.
14:01In between MMA fights, a guy who can get in there and box, he's not going to embarrass the promoter.
14:06Nope.
14:06He's not going to make a mockery of it.
14:07He's not going to go down easily.
14:09He's someone that you can put in there.
14:10He can win a fight or two, but also give people work.
14:13Go in there and make a few extra bucks.
14:14It's a good career.
14:15Definitely.
14:16You know, he looks really good.
14:17Like I said, you usually get an MMA fighter who comes in, he switches his feet, doesn't know what he's doing.
14:22But Dos Santos, he's looking beautiful in here.
14:25Digging right now, digging into that body, putting the pressure.
14:28And as the round goes on, he's picking up his pace.
14:31He might just switch over to boxing and say, forget me, man.
14:34No, you're right.
14:34It's really been a wide spectrum from what you and I have seen through the years when MMA fighters step in there.
14:38Some have just gone down quickly.
14:40They don't put up much of a fight.
14:41They don't really have the skill set.
14:42And then they get a guy like tonight with Dos Santos who brings it to the table, who's tough, who's hard-nosed, who gets in there.
14:48He's coming to fight.
14:49So it's a wide range.
14:51You don't really know until that bell rings which one you're going to get.
14:54And we're getting a good one tonight.
14:57Very impressive by Johnny Rodrigo Dos Santos.
15:00And Brian Long, too.
15:02That's what I'm saying.
15:03He's got to do.
15:03He's got to keep Long's back on those ropes and work the top.
15:07Long is trying to work that body, so work the top.
15:09Final 10 seconds of the fight.
15:17And there's the bell.
15:18Be very interested and ready to see what the scorecards are.
15:20How did you have round four?
15:21I have round four for Dos Santos.
15:23You know, he had his spots in there and much more spots.
15:26You see right now, Dos Santos is waiting, waiting a little bit, and he's counting.
15:31He jumps in, puts Long's back on those ropes, and he's just digging them hooks.
15:36It did look like through two rounds that Long was in control of the fight, and it looked
15:40like he could just go in there.
15:41Not to say he could coast, but he's got this one.
15:44He's halfway there.
15:46But Dos Santos really charged and surged ahead in round three, and you may be right, Ray.
15:49If he gets rounds three and four, you could have a draw.
15:52Now, you never know what the scorecards are.
15:54We've sat here before, and we've sort of prophesized, and we've been completely wrong.
15:59So we're not going to give any sort of prediction whatsoever.
16:01We're going to let the judges get all that.
16:02Everything's our opinion.
16:03Yeah, it's just an opinion.
16:04We're not the official scorekeepers.
16:06We can't remind you enough about that, but a very interesting fight.
16:10Two different dynamics here.
16:11You've got the highly-touted Irish prospect, Brian Long, and you've got Johnny Rodrigo Dos
16:15Santos, a pro MMA fighter, rather, who is just dipping his toes into boxing, who may have
16:20found a little something here, Ray, who could make a second job.
16:24It's kind of like having a night job after your day job.
16:26You go in there and you fight.
16:28Can I do both for a little while and see which job I like better, and I'll stick to one.
16:32And whether he's MMA or boxing, he's just a pro fighter.
16:35He's a solid one at that.
16:36I've been very impressed with what I saw in just these four rounds.
16:39So it'll be very interesting to see what the scorecards have in store.
16:42With that, we're going to send it up to our ring announcer, Steve Mays.
16:45Ladies and gentlemen, we have a decision in the first bout.
17:00All three judges are in agreeance.
17:0439-37 for unanimous decision win from Cork, Ireland, Brian Long.
17:17So there it is, Ray.
17:1839-37 across the board.
17:20That's three rounds to one.
17:21And I think, like you said, round three most likely went to Dos Santos.
17:25And it appears at the end, the judges thought round four, Brian Long did enough to squeak this one out.
17:29But much closer than the scorecards would indicate.
17:31Yeah, definitely.
17:32You know, like I said, we're sitting in one.
