love comes softly
Transcript
00:00A newlywed man promised to stay by his wife's side forever, but just three days after the wedding,
00:04he died in a tragic accident. As his wife mourned at his grave, a stranger suddenly showed up and
00:09proposed to her. Turns out the man named John had also lost his wife years ago. Since then he had
00:20been raising his daughter all alone, but the lack of love in the house made his daughter emotionally
00:24unstable. So John made a decision that seemed crazy to others. He offered Maddie a deal. If
00:28she agreed to marry him and help raise his daughter, he would give her a large sum of money
00:32next spring. Enough for her to return home and start over. Maddie was torn. She felt marrying
00:36another man so soon would betray her late husband. But a neighbor reminded her. The only carriage
00:40leaving town wouldn't come until spring. And in the harsh winter ahead, John's offer might be the
00:44only way she and her unborn child could survive. So Maddie accepted. And with that, her fate took a
00:49sharp turn. The wedding was short and quiet. Then Maddie moved into John's house. But John's
00:53daughter Maisie was not happy about it. She resented Maddie from the start. Luckily John was a fair and
00:58kind man. He gave Maddie the only bedroom and moved into the cold barn himself, still mourning
01:03her husband. Maddie couldn't sleep a wink that night. When she finally woke up the next day,
01:07it was already noon. And Maisie wasted no time mocking her. I've never seen nobody sleep so long.
01:12I thought she might be dead. John quickly stepped in to stop her, trying to ease the tension. He took
01:17his daughter out for a walk. Watching them leave through the window, Maddie finally let her guard down.
01:21And for the first time since her husband's death, she enjoyed a proper meal. Later she sat alone on the
01:25swing under a tree. As it gently rocked, memories of her late husband flooded back. Tears rolled down
01:30her face. And that was when John and Maisie returned home. John knew what she was feeling.
01:37He had lost his wife too. On the third day, Maddie stared out the window. Watching John work in the
01:42yard, she had started to let her guard down. So she offered to help around the house. John smiled and
01:46brought her to where Maisie was doing chores. He explained that Maisie never had a childhood. She had
01:50been working non-stop since her mom died. Never went to school. Never got to be a kid. He hoped
01:54Maddie could teach her, help her learn and grow like a real child. Moved by John's words,
01:58Maddie agreed. But she had never lived on a farm. Even collecting eggs was a struggle.
02:02Maisie didn't understand why her father married someone so useless. So she played a prank. While
02:06Maddie worked, Maisie threw a pile of cow dung at her. Maddie was furious.
02:09I know exactly what you're meaning to do, Missie. Now you listen to me.
02:13You're not my mother and I don't have to listen to you. As long as I am here. I don't want you
02:17here. I've got news for you. I don't want to be here either. The fact of the matter is,
02:22I made a bargain with your father and I intend to keep my end of that bargain even if you do
02:26everything short of trying to kill me in the process. Dinner. The tension between the two was
02:30thick. They couldn't stand each other. John could only sigh, knowing he still had a long way to go
02:34to bring this broken family together.
