00:0016-year-olds are to be given the right to vote in all UK elections
00:04as part of reforms just being announced.
00:07Let's go live to Westminster.
00:08Our political correspondent Mari Aurora is standing by for us.
00:12Mari, what's the government proposing?
00:14Morning, Gareth.
00:15So, this is a manifesto pledge
00:18and what Labour is saying is it is a manifesto promise delivered.
00:21So, in the next general election,
00:2316- and 17-year-olds will legally be allowed to vote.
00:27Really, really interesting in terms of these reforms.
00:31Now, the government are saying that there are three things
00:34that they are focusing on when it comes to these election reforms.
00:38First of all, that age change, of course.
00:40Second of all, they are going to allow bank cards
00:43to be able to be used as voter ID.
00:47Remember, the Conservatives brought in voter ID.
00:49People had to have very specific forms of ID in order to vote.
00:53And if you didn't, you were no longer allowed,
00:55even if you were registered to vote.
00:56Well, they are changing that,
00:58so you can also now use your bank cards.
01:00They say that that is going to extend people's ability
01:04to exercise their democratic rights.
01:07And then, third of all,
01:08they are going to be toughening up some of the rules
01:10to guard against foreign political interference
01:14and also the abuse of campaign.
