00:00I'm auditioning for the role of Billy.
00:02This is my audition for Billy Tipton.
00:04Auditioning for Billy.
00:05This is Billy.
00:06And I'm here for the role of Billy.
00:08Now number 16 on our program tonight,
00:10with Billy on a vocal,
00:12it's the best things in life are free.
00:20I'm a musician and I didn't know who he was
00:22and I was very surprised at myself.
00:24Also a little bit guilty.
00:25I was like, this is like a legend.
00:27How have I not done my homework?
00:30It is kind of erased from history,
00:32when he was this amazing musician.
00:35I listened to his whole album on the way here
00:37and I was almost in tears.
00:39How would I summarize the story of Billy Tipton?
00:45He was a trans-masculine jazz musician.
00:50Pretty simple.
00:55It's such a common story, actually,
00:58to sensationalize, you know, the reveal.
01:01You know, this person had those genitals,
01:03but they use those pronouns.
01:05Shock, you know, horror.
01:07Many would imagine that they're unsure
01:09if they will be honored as trans people in death.
01:12He was a doting, loving, caring, ordinary father.
01:17Father.
01:18Father.
01:19No matter what he was.
01:20I loved him just the way he was.
01:26Trans people's survival through history
01:28was based on their ability to assimilate into society
01:31without being noticed.
01:33Why?
01:34Because there was no such thing as a trans man.
01:42It's a question about passing.
01:44How you were reading yourself
01:45versus how the room is reading you,
01:47always negotiating that boundary.
01:49It's an assumption that passing
01:51is somehow about fooling.
01:53You know, trying to pass.
01:55Pass is what?
01:56Regular?
01:57I don't want to f***ing be regular.
