Yak-40-lentolaboratorio, jota operoi Siperian ilmailututkimuslaitos (SibNIA) ja joka on nimetty S.A. Chaplyginin mukaan, suoritti onnistuneesti ensilentonsa VK-800-turboprop-moottorilla. Moottorin on kehittänyt JSC "UZGA" (Uralin siviili-ilmailutehdas).

Koe­lennon aikana arvioitiin moottorin suorituskykyä eri käyttötilanteissa. Lentokone pysyi ilmassa noin 15 minuuttia, saavutti 700 metrin korkeuden ja jopa 340 km/h nopeuden. Testi-insinöörien mukaan VK-800 toimi vakaasti kaikissa vaiheissa — rullauksessa, nousussa, matkanopeudessa ja laskussa.
