00:00Scotty Scheffler enters his world number one and the short favorite.
00:04He has never been crowned the champion golfer of the year.
00:07He has not won the Open Championship just yet, but Scotty has won a ton.
00:12He gave a rather introspective answer, Keith, in getting ready for his pre-tournament press conference
00:17about the idea of glory and what winning means to him.
00:20Let's hear from world number one Scotty Scheffler right now.
00:23I'm not here to inspire somebody else to be the best player in the world because what's the point?
00:27This is not a fulfilling life.
00:31It's fulfilling from a sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart.
00:38There's a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfill them in life,
00:43and then you get there and all of a sudden you get to number one in the world, and they're like, what's the point?
00:47I really do believe that because what is the point?
00:51Why do I want to win this tournament so bad?
00:53That's something that I wrestle with on a daily basis.
00:55It's like showing up at the Masters every year, it's like, why do I want to win this golf tournament so badly?
01:00Why do I want to win the Open Championship so badly?
01:03I don't know because if I win, it's going to be awesome for about two minutes,
01:08and then we're going to get to the next week, and it's going to be like, hey, you won two majors this year.
01:11How important is it for you to win the FedExCup playoffs?
01:13It's just like, we're back here again, you know?
01:17So we really do.
01:17We work so hard for such little moments, and, you know, I'm kind of a sicko.
01:22I love putting in the work.
01:24I love being able to practice.
01:25I love getting out to live out my dreams.
01:26But at the end of the day, sometimes I just don't understand the point.
01:31Keith, it was a long five-plus-minute answer from Scheffler yesterday.
01:35He talked about that competitive fire and grind, as you heard.
01:38But it is interesting to hear the most dominant golfer in world number one saying winning is not fulfilling.
01:44How did you read into Scotty Scheffler's comments?
01:47Well, you know, a lot of this comes from perspective, Ben.
01:51You know, I'm not quite sure that Scotty Scheffler has ever slept in his car in order to make it on the mini tours or do anything else.
01:58He's never really worried about the endgame financially when it comes to the game of golf.
02:02And he's been very blessed in that way.
02:04So, I don't know.
02:07Points of that conversation seem almost contradictory to me, where he's like, yeah, it's not a big deal to me.
02:12I'm only going to celebrate for two minutes.
02:13But then I'm going to turn around, and I'm going to wake up every day at 530 in the morning, and I'm going to grind to make sure that I do win.
02:19I think at times he just kind of was like a little bit circular in what he was trying to say there that, yeah, I get it, that his generation of golfer wants to be as good of a dad and wants to have a work-life balance and wants to do all of these things.
02:31But at the same time, like, and yes, that's much different than Tiger and what I would have grown up on, like, in being a fan of golf.
02:40But, like, I don't buy into all of it, to be honest with you.
02:43You know what I mean?
02:44I think it's great, and I think that people that are publicizing that, you know, it makes the game more attractive at the highest level.
02:52But, I mean, the guy made, like, $80 million last year.
02:55He doesn't have a care in the world.
02:56Of course he could just go out and grind and do his thing and act any way he wants to.
03:00I don't quite buy into it, and if I was the rest of the field, I'd be more worried than I would be like, hey, everything's going to be okay.
03:07Scotty doesn't care that much.
03:09I'd be worried this week.
03:11I got to tell you one thing on this because I think it brings up some great points here.
03:14And if you have a PR machine for the PGA Tour, what are some of these pros actually telling us right now?
03:20Now, Scotty Scheffler, who's got more money than anything, is like, I don't even like this sport right now.
03:24Great, that'll get me to buy in.
03:25Or even Xander Schauffele saying, I win these awards and, like, throw them out the window.
03:29Gold medal, proud of my country, no idea where that's even at.
03:32Like, what has gotten into the golfers in the water over there this week here?
03:36I mean, Donnie, that's exactly where I'm going with this, right?
03:39Like, I mean, at one point, these guys are grinding on the range in 100-degree heat wherever they live in some warm climate.
03:45And then they're going to tell us at the end of the day that, you know, two minutes later that they don't care.
03:51I just don't buy it all.
03:53I think that a lot of it, it just doesn't make any sense to me, to be honest with you.
