Mackem talent Tom A. Smith on a hometown show at The Fire Station and taking his music career to the next level
Transcript
00:00Tom, we're down here at the Fire Station.
00:02You're going to be headlining this summer for the Summer Party Series.
00:05What can we expect from your gig?
00:07Yeah, I can't wait for it. I'm looking forward to it.
00:09It's going to be a special day.
00:12Hopefully the weather stays nice.
00:13But no, it's going to be a set of some new music
00:17that we're really looking forward to playing.
00:18I don't think we've played a lot of it in Sunderland,
00:20so I'm looking forward to people hearing it.
00:22But also, you know, some of our older releases as well.
00:27It's going to be an absolute party, so I can't wait for it.
00:30And you've signed to a record label in the past few months.
00:32Are you hoping that will take your career to the next level?
00:35I mean, I hope so.
00:36Fiction is obviously so well-decorated and a great label.
00:41So I can't, especially people who have inspired me a lot through the years,
00:44the Cure team in Parlour, likes of that.
00:47So it's a real privilege.
00:49But we've got our first release coming out with them
00:51on the 1st of August, Fashion, which I can't wait for people to hear.
00:56It's probably my favourite song that I've put out yet.
00:58There's been a lot of time and a lot of work,
00:59I've put into it.
01:01So, yeah, it's a new era, fresh start.
01:04And I feel like fiction is the most perfect way to go about it.
01:09And they have been so supportive.
01:11And it feels like the next step for us now, to be honest, yeah.
01:14And you've been doing music for so long.
01:16You're a very prolific writer.
01:18And you've had so much support from the Sunderland music scene.
01:21And now we're a music city.
01:23Yes, yeah.
01:23No, of course, I was at the event where they announced us here.
01:27And, yeah, it was a real lovely surprise for us all there.
01:31Obviously not a surprise for us because we know how incredible the city is in terms of its music.
01:35All you need to do is, you know, come to the centre, come to sort of Cale Square,
01:39and you'll see how much music has inspired the place.
01:42You know, the likes of the Peacock, Barry Hyde here, and Pop Rex as well.
01:46You know, there is a real hub and a creative hub for it in Sunderland.
01:51So I think it's well-deserved.
01:52And it's really exciting for us to be recognised as that sort of, you know, level of city when it comes to music.
02:00So hopefully that kicks on and we keep growing and keep on getting bigger with it.
02:04And us musicians in Sunderland have to keep sticking at it and supporting each other.
02:09And, you know, really make this place a proper hub for music.
