Johnny Vegas' Little Shop Of Antiques Season 1 Episode 2
Transcript
00:00This time...
00:02God, don't let the first customer walk in now.
00:04...rand openings...
00:06I honestly don't think I've ever felt so vulnerable.
00:08...missed targets...
00:10You've not!
00:12...and a love affair with a chair.
00:14That is absolutely fantastic.
00:17Did I buy it like that?
00:19This is like, uh, lucky error.
00:22To millions, Johnny Vegas is known as an award-winning stand-up comedian.
00:27Good evening, Benny Jones!
00:28...much-loved actor...
00:29I've got no range, but distinctive is what I do.
00:33...and celebrated artist...
00:38...but he's also a collector of vintage.
00:41The odd...
00:42This was once the pilot of a flying badger.
00:45...and the extraordinary...
00:46Why I bought this and why I paid for it, I'm taking the fifth.
00:50...now after years of dreaming...
00:52...he's turning his hobby into a business...
00:55Oh, wow, it's massive!
00:57...by opening his very own vintage and collectible shop.
01:01Oh, now it feels real!
01:03...so with the help of lifelong friend and assistant Bev...
01:06Well done!
01:07...he's finally parting with some of his collection...
01:10I'm really attached to it.
01:11...and hitting the road...
01:13Oh, God, we look like swingers!
01:15...in search of hidden treasures to stop the shop...
01:19...buying low...
01:20...30 quid!
01:22No, not 60, just go to 70.
01:24Are there any other monstrosities in pages?
01:27...in the hopes of selling high...
01:29...200 quid.
01:30Deal done.
01:31I like it.
01:32...but as a first-time dealer...
01:34...has Johnny got what it takes?
01:38Auctions are not a good place for Johnny.
01:40Spank double the budget.
01:41You don't trust me, do you?
01:42No.
01:43It's been a tough week.
01:47...to turn his lifelong passion...
01:49Get in!
01:50Here we go, buddy.
01:51...into the business of his dreams.
01:53Do you know what I'm doing?
01:54Do you know what I'm doing?
01:55Do you know what I'm doing?
01:56Do you know what I'm doing?
02:09Oh!
02:10Morning number one!
02:11It's opening day at Vintage Vegas.
02:14The culmination of a lifetime of collecting...
02:17...weeks of planning...
02:18...and construction.
02:19Oh, it's exciting!
02:21I can't be excited.
02:23It's like that tunnel at the end of your life.
02:26Is this all I've done with my life?
02:31That needs to be up right.
02:33Oh, have you got some tweaking to do?
02:36With only two buying trips under his belt,
02:39the shop has been mostly stocked with items
02:41from Johnny's own personal collection.
02:43That's going in the back.
02:45OK.
02:46It's not...
02:47I've been on stage and I've died.
02:49I've done comedy gigs.
02:52I honestly don't think I've ever felt so vulnerable.
02:55It could be absolutely soul-destroying
02:57if everybody's come in to have a look
02:59and not left with anything.
03:01I'm just really worried about what people are going to make of it.
03:05God, don't let the first customer walk in now.
03:08Is she going?
03:09Well, she can't lie under a table.
03:11OK.
03:14I'm not nervous.
03:16Opening day and he's a bag of nerves.
03:18He really is.
03:19I think there might have to be a point
03:21where I just open that door and let people in
03:24because it was up to Johnny.
03:25It would still be closed at five o'clock.
03:27You want to open your shop?
03:28And so, after last-minute tinkering
03:33and two hours later than anticipated,
03:36Johnny finally opens for business.
03:40We're open!
03:41Ha, ha, ha!
03:45But opening up is one thing,
03:47getting customers through the door is another.
03:49Right.
04:02Oh, there's some people.
04:03Oh, wow.
04:04There's some people.
04:06Hi, are you OK?
04:07I'm not going to pressure you.
04:08Have a look round.
04:09Ask questions.
04:10Ask a price or give us a price.
04:12You won't offend us.
04:16You all right?
04:17Feel free to browse.
04:19Any questions on anything?
04:22With the shop filling up,
04:23there's no more space for nerves.
04:26It's time for Johnny Vegas to turn shopkeeper.
04:31One of the first items to get noticed
04:33are the racing courses from Johnny's lock-up.
04:36They're off a cruise ship from the 50s
04:38and it was a deck game.
04:40And you've picked possibly the most complete one.
04:43They are antiques, so they're 60 each.
04:46That's from being used.
04:49And that's what sold that to me,
04:51was going, wow.
04:53And the condition it's still in after all nine years.
04:56If you're into horses...
04:57Yeah.
04:58...and you're into cruises,
04:59it's a bit of a no-brainer.
05:01Yeah.
05:02But he has to be 60,
05:03because he's got all four legs,
05:04he's got his tail.
05:05Yeah.
05:06And I can't go any lower than that.
05:08I'm sorry.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Honestly, that's...
05:13I think for the backstory, for everything...
05:16Yeah.
05:17It's not a bad...
05:18I'm not...
05:19Honestly, I am not beating you up on that.
05:21Yeah, no, Johnny.
05:22It's worth that all day long.
05:23Thank you very much.
05:24Thank you, Johnny, mate.
05:26I've got the Grand Nationals on.
05:27I'll get it out.
05:28Bring it out.
05:29And I'll be thinking about you, Johnny,
05:30and I'll be...
05:31You know you've got a bat number four every year.
05:32Yeah, a bat number four, yeah.
05:34I made my first sale.
05:37It was not as painful as I thought it might be.
05:41I'm happier.
05:42I'm feeling far better than I thought I would.
05:45I'm a dealer.
05:46Get me.
05:49Boyed by his first sale,
05:51Johnny hits the shop floor
05:53and gets to work selling his collection to his new customers.
05:5720 quid for the pair.
05:5820 pounds it is.
05:5920 pounds.
06:00Thank you very much.
06:02I'm actually selling.
06:03I'm in salesman mode.
06:0460 on that would do it.
06:06All my stuff is really great,
06:08but it's going and it's selling.
06:10What a joke.
06:1180 quid.
06:16You happy with that?
06:17Good for a first day, isn't it?
06:18Well done.
06:20The first day has been really great.
06:21Couldn't have gone any better.
06:22It would have been absolutely devastating.
06:25We'd have shut the door at five and had no sales,
06:28but all the customers have been really complimentary
06:31about the shop and the stuff that he's selling.
06:34And yeah, there's been quite a lot of sales.
06:37I'm really happy.
06:39I'm tired, but I'm really happy.
06:41It didn't kill me letting stuff go.
06:43That's the best bit.
06:45That's the one bit that makes me feel like
06:47I might just stand a chance at being more than a fanboy.
06:51And I'm inspired to go out and get better at this.
06:59With the shop now closed for the day,
07:01having met the public, Johnny is keen to meet his neighbours.
07:06Dagfields is host to over 200 different dealers and workshops
07:10with a tight-knit community that Johnny is keen to become part of.
07:14Oh, come on in.
07:16Hello.
07:17Oh, hi, sir.
07:19No, that's my apprentice.
07:21I was going to say, I thought this young man was the proprietor.
07:23Hiya, mate.
07:24Johnny.
07:25Hi, I'm Dave.
07:26Hiya, Dave.
07:27I'm the bloke next door.
07:29The new arrival.
07:30The new neighbour.
07:31How's it going?
07:32Excellent.
07:33How's it going?
07:34Oh, hello.
07:35Hello.
07:36I've seen your telly.
07:37Have you?
07:38I'm Baird.
07:39Johnny.
07:40This is Dave, but I'm guessing you've already met him.
07:43I haven't met him before.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Do you do campers?
07:47We do.
07:48Do all kinds of campers.
07:49I have a bit of history with campers.
07:52I'm doing, collecting and selling stuff that I've gathered over the years.
07:56It's an eclectic mix of stuff, so there's no firm plan other than things I like.
08:02Will it work commercially?
08:03Do you like any of your Dave's stuff?
08:04He's got a lot of stuff.
08:05Do you like stuff?
08:06A lot of stuff.
08:08And everything.
08:09And your handy.
08:10Nothing can be made that I can't fix.
08:13It's good to know.
08:14He's useful.
08:15He is useful to have around.
08:16So, you know, if you need someone to fix something.
08:19I love that.
08:20I love that.
08:21Not in a relationship.
08:22You know, like in a...
08:23He's useful.
08:24He's useful.
08:25Not wonderful to have around.
08:27He's useful.
08:28But if you can mend stuff, we might have a future together, you know.
08:31Just bring it around.
08:32I'll sort it for you.
08:33You sure?
08:34Yeah.
08:35Fantastic.
08:36Yeah.
08:37Could be the start of something.
08:38A wonderful, a beautiful relationship, couldn't it?
08:40Say hi.
08:41You say hello.
08:42Should I open a shop?
08:44I've got Baba.
08:46Again, what my financial advisor said.
08:50Look forward to seeing you.
08:52Love to have you.
08:53Bye-bye.
08:54Bye-bye.
08:55Bye-bye.
08:58Making friends already.
09:00It's always nice.
09:01I've always thought of having a shop as being a solo venture.
09:05But then you do suddenly realise you know that much.
09:09And as you're learning more and more, there's kind of specialists for everything.
09:13And having access to all that, where you can just reach out, or it's a ten-yard walk away, is obviously hugely beneficial.
09:26It looks big, this place, Johnny.
09:29There's a lot more stuff, and a lot more stuff doesn't necessarily mean...
09:33No.
09:34Loads of great stuff.
09:35But I've been in some like this, and 90% of it is house clearances, and it's not the best stuff from the houses.
09:41Sometimes these can be either hit and miss, or an absolute, like, gold mine.
09:46A little gold mine place.
09:48And your kid in a candy shop, you just don't know where to look.
09:52On a mission to restock their shop with small saleable items, Johnny and Bev are heading to The Weaving Shed in Cullingworth, Yorkshire.
10:01At this four-storey Antiques Mega Emporium, they will be doing business with Roy Mason.
10:08I'm one of the four dealers here at The Weaving Shed, and I've been in the business for five years.
10:20Mmm!
10:21You've not!
10:22I've done it!
10:24Not as half an egg, but fellow!
10:26Oh, God!
10:28Nothing says I'm in business like a massive egg stain on your teeth, man.
10:38God, it's huge.
10:39I'm going to mooch off and leave you.
10:41Right.
10:45I like them because they've not been touched.
10:49I don't like them restored.
10:52That door is beautiful.
10:54I'm not even through the doors.
10:56I'm not even through the doors.
11:00I'm looking at doors.
11:03Roy?
11:04Johnny?
11:05How are you doing?
11:06I'm all right. Nice to meet you.
11:07I'm grand, thank you.
11:08So this is your spot, this is your...
11:09Yep, this is all mine.
11:10I'm round there as well, yep.
11:11Can I go and have a wander?
11:12You certainly can, and hopefully you'll find something that interests you.
11:15You can remove the hopefully out of that.
11:18Ha, ha, ha.
11:23Ooh.
11:25Yeah.
11:30West German.
11:31I like him.
11:34Oh, that's nice too.
11:36It is.
11:37And you know what?
11:38When I got it, it was in a real state.
11:39It was filthy.
11:40Probably hadn't seen the light of day for about the last 20 years.
11:43If you like your industrial type of thing, it's an absolute solid table or desk.
11:48I love it.
11:50What's the edge on the lamp?
11:51Is that new to...?
11:53No, it's the Scrumble angle poise.
11:56I've never seen it with that finish on it.
11:58Yeah, it's the original finish.
12:00And that's called Scrumble?
12:01Scrumble, yeah.
12:02It's just the Scrumble paint.
12:03You see it on furniture as well.
12:06Right.
12:08What I'm struggling with here is the larger buys are really reasonably priced.
12:14The smalls are more than one I'll own a pair.
12:17I'll have to get the price down on everything.
12:19This is not a shop for dealers, I would say.
12:23So how do you convince them to get it down to a price to make it worth your while?
12:27Because you are fundamentally saying to them,
12:29I want your profit margin.
12:31Back at the weaving shed in Yorkshire,
12:43while Johnny Vegas searches for more items he thinks he can get a deal on...
12:47That's a nice little...
12:49Bev's keeping herself entertained.
12:51Oh, I've found a chopper.
12:53Let's have a go.
12:55Ooh.
12:56I might need the seat lower.
12:59Oh, God.
13:00I don't know if they were made for comfort in the 70s.
13:02Ooh.
13:05Oh, it's not comfort.
13:07Might need some basil.
13:08Like I say, I love fairground stuff.
13:13Kicks in all your horses and I'm going, you're buying for the shop.
13:17They're all original, the horses.
13:18Yeah, I know, you can tell that they're nice.
13:20They were at a fairground in Ripon, which isn't too far away from here.
13:23I just like the artwork on them as well.
13:25And I think once you get something that's original, they've all been hand painted, haven't they?
13:29Yeah.
13:31So this is a barber's chair.
13:33Yep.
13:34So...
13:35That is absolutely fantastic.
13:38What's the age on that?
13:391950s, the Italian barber's shop chair.
13:43Obviously, for kids.
13:44But you think again, how many kids will have sat in that over the years, having a short back and sides?
13:48That is absolutely...
13:50It's fantastic, isn't it?
13:51It's in good nick from that era, isn't it?
13:53It is in good nick, yeah.
13:54The wheels go round as well.
13:56I think that's fantastic.
13:58That's my favourite thing I've seen so far, that.
14:00As a talking point, as something in the shop that just sets you apart, I have never seen one.
14:06I will never see another one in my life.
14:09This...
14:10This is phenomenal.
14:14Johnny now knows what he likes, but can he get it for the price he wants?
14:19Starting with the engineering desk, priced at £165, and the accompanying chair, on for £135.
14:27You give me a price that you think you'd be comfortable with.
14:30I won't start low.
14:33Don't want to offend you.
14:34You've got a good stuff.
14:35Right, I'm a plain speaking Yorkshireman.
14:36I like to be a little simpler.
14:37Well, I think...
14:38I hope I'm...
14:39I'm...
14:40I'm...
14:41I'm...
14:42I'm doing further.
14:43I've taken both at once at £250.
14:44I'll accept that.
14:45£250.
14:46Sound.
14:48This 1950s machinist table and chair was purpose-built for mill workers in Keeley, West Yorkshire.
14:56I'm thrilled.
14:57The desk and chair is not enough often for me to make some honour.
15:01Next item on the agenda, the Charles Italian barber chair, on sale for £225.
15:10Gotcha.
15:11If I can get £175, that'd be amazing.
15:14I won't get that.
15:15If I can get £200, he knows I like it.
15:17I think £200 would be a fair price.
15:19I just can't leave this.
15:21It's lovely, isn't it?
15:22It's a one-off piece.
15:24£225 on it.
15:25You throw me a price on that one.
15:28I'll give you a one-off price, cos I paid quite heavily for it, because I've not seen it.
15:32But I've had it a while, so I'm prepared to take a little bit of a hit on it.
15:37£185.
15:41That's only a tenner over the cheeky bit I was going to offer.
15:45Thank you very much.
15:49This sets you apart.
15:52You have not got a generic collectible shot.
15:55You've got one-offs.
15:58Next up, the Anglepoise lamp.
16:00Priced at £125.
16:04I do love that.
16:05Yep.
16:06But I have kind of spent up on the other stuff.
16:09Yeah, no, I get that.
16:10Yep.
16:11It is lovely.
16:12It's in great condition.
16:13It's fabulous.
16:14Yeah.
16:15You know what I mean?
16:16I know the raised base.
16:17Yeah.
16:18It's the three-yard deco, but that is...
16:20Yeah.
16:21And they hold the value as well, Johnny.
16:23I said I've spent my money on that. How much?
16:32It'd have to be a straight one.
16:35Yeah.
16:37OK.
16:38The scumble lamp was manufactured by Herbert Terry & Sons in Worcestershire in 1935.
16:48It rose to popularity during the war as an ideal blackout lamp that could direct light away from windows.
16:54I'm dead happy with what I've got.
16:56Yep.
16:57No.
16:58If you're happy...
16:59I am more than happy.
17:00But Roy has got one last offer to throw Johnny's way.
17:03The small matter of a £250 fairground horse.
17:07I'll tell you what I'll do.
17:08Because you're starting out in business, and I always like to think, as a fellow dealer, you've got to give them a bit of a gift at some point.
17:18I will do that for you for what I paid for it, and that's £130.
17:27I've spent so much!
17:29Yeah!
17:30Found in fairgrounds from the Victorian era through to the 1970s, this late 1950s model was scratch-made on-site at a fairground in North Yorkshire.
17:42And I'm happy to do that, because I think...
17:44That's an absolute thank you.
17:45At the start of it, it's about building these relationships, getting something going.
17:48Definitely.
17:49You're a gentleman.
17:51Right, well, best start packing up, aren't we?
17:54Tell me that's not cool.
17:55Oh, I love it.
17:57Oh, that is fantastic.
17:59That was Roy's gift to me.
18:00Was it?
18:01Have a guess at how much?
18:02Three for 150.
18:03130.
18:04Ooh!
18:05So it's just a lamp now, then?
18:08The lamp?
18:09The lamp.
18:10Haven't you bought a lamp?
18:11I don't think so.
18:12Oh!
18:13What is this lamp you speak of?
18:14I don't know, I thought they just said anything else, and they just said maybe a lamp.
18:18Anglepoise lamp?
18:19Oh, yeah!
18:20Sorry!
18:21If you're gonna ever hope to make a profit in this game, stock control.
18:31Do I own a lamp?
18:32I have no recollection of buying a lamp.
18:34How dare you accuse me of...
18:36Oh, that one, yeah.
18:38Yeah.
18:39It was so nice in there, though, Johnny, isn't it?
18:41All her stuff.
18:42Yeah.
18:43The barber's church, Jules.
18:44You know what I mean?
18:45Another great contact.
18:46Great.
18:47Really good advice.
18:48Really eye-to-eye.
18:49Don't you feel like a deagle?
18:50Oh, I was just gonna say, you're making all your little mates.
18:51It's like they're taking me on in there.
18:52Yeah, yeah.
18:53Johnny's found his tribe.
18:54Johnny returns to the shop, feeling like a bona fide dealer.
18:55Hello, my beauty.
18:56What's that?
18:57What was that?
18:58What was that?
18:59It's one of my shop.
19:00Did I buy it?
19:01Yeah.
19:02Yeah.
19:03Yeah.
19:04Yeah.
19:05Yeah.
19:06Yeah.
19:07Yeah.
19:08Yeah.
19:09Yeah.
19:10Yeah.
19:11Yeah.
19:12Yeah.
19:13Yeah.
19:14Yeah.
19:15Yeah.
19:16Yeah.
19:17Yeah.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Yeah.
19:20Yeah.
19:21Yeah.
19:22Yeah.
19:23I'm wondering why I said, well, did I buy it like that?
19:26I think so.
19:27What?
19:28With tape on it?
19:29I'm not sure.
19:30I just loaded it in the van.
19:31I didn't, sort of, inspect it, why?
19:33What's it got?
19:34What's it got on?
19:35It was just gaffer tapes.
19:36Why wouldn't we've got to board it with that if it was tape on it?
19:42That I didn't see on.
19:43That's quite...
19:44that's quite this is like a rookie ever is it really bad it's just that that's
19:57all the values gone out of it it's probably why and he's a decent chair
20:03so I'm not gonna go with it my fault for not seeing it but uh and he did is
20:10really good on judgmental horse there he was now looking at me going well you
20:15didn't check it it's on the table so I go and get John yeah come in and have a look
20:21yeah with Johnny at a loss fellow trader and neighbor antique dealer John Eggleston
20:34is on hand to put a value on the whole including the broken chair
20:39Johnny how's it going mate thank you best what's the problem I uh I didn't check it
20:45was taped at the front I got very excited I know it wasn't the best example of these
20:49but you know the barber's chairs that yes yes yeah yeah it's a child's barber's
20:52chair yeah yes it's I thought it had survived so how much you in that for
20:58go for 185 okay I think a lot of the money's already in it I think as well it's
21:07just if it going out buying I think a little bit of overconfidence yeah that's
21:11got to go at either a bit of a loss to be brutal or a very very small profit it's a
21:18great learning piece in two ways one price you're paying and to always look for
21:24damage and if it's gonna cost money it's got to go to one side it's a lesson
21:29learn move on from that it's done it's dusted move on to this I think what we
21:36need to do here clean it because it look look at this here it's got great
21:41what would you put it out to be honest you're not look you're beyond my feelings
21:51now probably 230 on it 240 yeah that would be my high point on those no he did me
21:57good that he did 130 oh that's wrong with a potential profit 110 pounds on the
22:04rocking horse offsetting his loss on the barber chair Johnny's hoping the rest of
22:09his buys make the grade the desk the chair as well so you've got the chair
22:14with it as well so for this and this I I would ask how that's 450 for the per I
22:24know you're gonna say maybe 380 or three no I'm gonna say five really 250 250 you
22:30made me death and this I've just I've never seen that finish no it's a real good
22:40yeah I've never someone in that color and it doesn't look like somebody's done an
22:44amateur or is it somebody just that that's cool bit of boob in there oh yeah
22:50yeah you know uh yeah I like that one paid hundred I don't know 80 is what you're possibly thinking no
22:58no absolutely not no I was oh I was thinking 180 190 on that one seriously
23:04absolutely it's got a great look to it I'd have that out at 180 I know that I go
23:09quick without a doubt the desk I'm saying that's the best sort of bundle or
23:19presentation piece so far I'm really happy with the lamp so it's original it's
23:25good it's all correct it suits that it's a really good size lovely the the barber's
23:33chair and to nobody thought but my own bit embarrassed so I will I'm gonna put
23:40it in the back just for now and I'm gonna decide whether to repair it or not
23:44there's no point putting some out clinging on to it for their life if it's
23:47gonna detract from the look of the shop if it's a mistake is a mistake own it
23:52keep it put it in the back let it serve as a reminder what to buy and what not to
23:58buy in future
24:03Johnny's got the barber chair out the band the little kids one and he
24:17absolutely loved it when he bought it and part that's broken the plastic it was
24:21sort of like sellotape together he's gutted he's gutted because he loved it I
24:26think he really thought he had a really really nice piece
24:30hello you what can I do for you well so obviously it's the bike you put the kid
24:38in at the barbers and this front bit is as good as gone I'm not quite sure what to do
24:47so do you want it loving and looking like it always was old romantic I love that
24:54this has survived yeah you know there's certain bits of it you go if I took that off and had a new one cast it wouldn't be the same I'd know
25:02it's got charisma like it is well I I don't want to I don't want to burden you
25:08it's not a problem tiny bit of TLC no major restoration you're out just make it look
25:13do you mind having a quick kind of I'll enjoy doing that will you good hmm
25:21I can't wait to see the back of it I'm just taking the bike to be neighbor Dave I know it
25:31we won't see that when I spent on it still not quite willing to give up on it still
25:36wanted to find a home and as long as there's not silly time put into it even
25:41if it's just sprucing it all I still think it earned a place in the shop
25:45Johnny has already learned that antiques dealing is not as easy as it looks but neither is getting
25:52the day started I know they are quite far away no but they are but I know man's got more movement
26:01than you I don't think that seatbelts been used very often matter to lose which is a good thing
26:06you might have to lose well exactly it's not me going through the window you just suggested looming
26:10up the seat belt well just maybe something just give it a tug do arrive I was nervous about what
26:20this one but it's a Swiss cottage yeah propire why are you nervous well because it's propire but
26:28they are liquidating the stock Johnny and Bev are back in Yorkshire heading to Swiss
26:40cottage an industrial sized prop higher and antique emporium run by John Howarth me and my wife have
26:49been doing this for about 40 years we started many years ago with the shop that was about six foot
26:55square and we built up from there this space is now crammed with thousands upon thousands of items
27:03encompassing anything and everything you could possibly imagine my passion is just hunting on earth in
27:10the obscure looking into the history of things now after a long career this wily veteran is calling time
27:18after 40 years I'm retiring and everything's got to go and when you look round there's a heck of a lot we've sold quite a bit already but it's still a lot to get rid of
27:29so is it like full stock liquidation from what I've heard yeah oh it should be
27:37I'm hoping it's a good day of smalls yes but not pricey smalls as well
27:46really got start keep small high turnover do you know interesting fact monkeys eat the bananas from the
27:55other end they do they use that to hold it they do you can do it like a monkey does no that's oh god
28:02sick how'd you drop a banana on yourself you're a proper messy eater oh no nice try not to undermine me I
28:14I won't undermine you you know I'm an idiot he doesn't I'm an idiot savant get some deals don't bid over
28:22idiot savant do not tell me about why I'm joking I knew that I'd annoy you already I have I've spotted
28:31lots of things already there's lots of smalls there so can I do this one of them just be left to me
28:40oh yeah I'm gonna have a niche John how you doing pal not bad not bad good to meet you wow you've got
28:51stuff you haven't seen no yet what got you started and when did it become me and my wife we haven't
28:57been going out right long we were bored and went to a car boat sale and she struck lucky she bought
29:02some jewelry and that were it we'd made more money on that when we did working on his jobs and we were
29:07off and running Joe I love you never meet a collector it wasn't full of stories yeah so
29:13what are you gonna go for are you going up market down market even a build I'm very open-minded I have
29:20that firm belief if I like it I hope somebody else will like it too it's a good way to start I'm hoping
29:26to be good for smalls and for walk out something you know I mean in here looking around all sorts of
29:32bits and pieces will keep you interested I mean you can spend the week in here there's so much
29:36stuff man I'm just gonna make it start from one end to the other well I'll see you in about two hours
29:41that's a beast
29:50there's so much stuff here so much do you like all these old vintage suitcases they go well
30:06there's everything here oh my god god there's row after row after it's funny at home close to them
30:19don't bother me but suddenly I feel very very unknowledgeable if I was to give anybody advice
30:28like Johnny starting out in this business I'd say trust your gut trust your instinct and it'll earn
30:34your money every item a fiver now is that a good thing or is there a reason why every item is a
30:40fiver oh no it's a fairground prize I'm asking in bed to put out the light look they've got full
30:49onesies on with a candle at the end of it it's very naive well it's naive because it was a prize
30:56because they were made dirt cheap sometimes they've got more to them that's a fiver yeah I'm gonna keep that
31:04I'm honestly genuinely just overwhelmed and I do not know and I've got to hold my hands up I don't know
31:16what's tart and what's any good I know I've come here for smalls but I could just quite easily and it's no
31:23fine so I could end up buying just a car load of rubbish
31:29oh my god the that just could be genius
31:34that I love having that is that real that the little sign around there the cheerio yes
31:45that's genuine yes not being mocked up or no it's genuine you promise me that's it's genuine absolutely
31:52paying for the paying for you yeah it's a genuine sir that came many years ago in the corn exchange in
32:01Leeds they had a shop that was set up just as a chemist that's fabulous that's almost that I had to
32:07ask it's almost a too good to be true I like that all the classic baby foods these are definitely not
32:16they're not fair the genuine the original counter displays bone and vegetable broth Nestle's baby
32:23foods it's nice it's another nice piece is this a device to show you how to lift something properly
32:41lift lift lift with the knees and not the back this is just fun if you let this guy I've got to have
32:52this look at him hello you spiv what's the story with this guy it's my great-grandad get lost yes he
33:09was a music hall star you are joking who painted that name me grandad oh it's not for sale then is
33:16it his father Herbert worked for the music halls around Blackpool and all that sort of area he was
33:21on the music hall circuit that's absolutely yeah so he's quite the artist thing me grandad they were
33:27a footballer to be honest was hey he played for Burnley and then he ended up being a policeman during the
33:32Second World War God I thought it was an advertising piece no it's done by a Harold me grandad I think
33:40you're fantastic I've really wanted a guy I want him to adopt me I wish he'd like took me on for an
33:46apprenticeship years ago I'd come and work for him for now quite liking these
33:52whenever I've seen the lizard without a tail I've gone how did that happen now I know that rats going I
34:02want me money Tuesday else you lose a foot where did you get these posters from John school they're all
34:11in school yeah they want framing up really and then you can go for a decent amount oh John these are
34:21fabulous mate oh but you skip and crawl about they're a piece of social history really it was just the end of a long
34:37day who finally that there's posters that match how my head works it's too many for me to check all of
34:56them it but I certainly do want quite a few of them it's only good good but with Johnny yet to do any
35:05deals will the Swiss cottage prices be as friendly as the owner in Yorkshire Johnny's hunting for small
35:21bargains at the Swiss cottage antique Emporium which is soon to be closing down an antique tie from 1920s
35:29yeah it's a repo it's a shame he and owner John have been getting on famously but now it's time to do
35:36some deals right start talking no to do on them because they're just five in each aren't they yeah
35:43they're done that I love that they were brilliant weren't they yeah these Victorian era ceramic pieces
35:51were made to be given out at fairs as prizes they were produced mainly in Germany from the mid to
35:57the late 19th century until the First World War I will make absolutely no secrets of the fact I love
36:06the posters it's one of the items that I'm going is it just me will of the fort like them and what
36:12will I make back once I framed them because I think they need framing up and presenting how many are
36:17wanting there's 11 there I'd say there'll be at least another nine about time I've gone through 20 so a
36:23five rupees 20 would be 100 quid 75 quid what were we saying on these now the 30 and 35 do you know
36:38what you you've done me a better deal on them I'll pay you that right that's done yeah now this piece
36:47so it's a work place tool to show you how to lift with your knees all right where did you get that
36:51from John Leeds University Wow I'm one of their storerooms when I cleared it many years ago it's
36:57one of them talking pieces people are gonna come in they're gonna they're gonna have a bit of fun
37:01with it is it I don't know if you're on the first now that you don't want to sell it I'll sell you
37:05um yeah 25 quid couldn't shit you're on quick enough you've done you've proper done right by me thank
37:17you Matt yeah I hope you do well well so do I yeah it's been very successful there bought well met the
37:24most fantastic guy he's give me really good prices you know what it's being a really important buying trip
37:31found stuff I could never have guessed in a month of Sundays so we're building up stock but it's the
37:36right kind of stock and it's not we've not got thousands of pounds worth of stock sitting idle
37:42after a 90-minute drive across the Pennines Johnny and Bev are back from Swiss Cottage ready to price up
37:57and get their new items out for sale this was a fun pic if I lose on that I don't bother it's character for the
38:04shop but I paid 65 for the per I don't need the chair over six money back but this one it's 32 pound 50
38:12put 45 on that it's a winner 25 quid for this sells itself 25 quid I'm gonna have 75 pound each I want 20
38:27quid out of them and I'm not taking less than 20 quid the school educational posters I paid 75 pound for 20
38:37pictures best 75 pound I have ever spent I will price them on how much to make me laugh genuinely so
38:46overall Johnny and Bev Swiss cottage trip has more than pay for the petrol with Johnny upbeat about what
38:53he could potentially make for his kinetic lifting model his sale would see a potential 45 pounds profit
39:00with the fairground prizes Johnny's hoping to make 15 pound on each one sold for his pair of
39:07advertising posters he's rounding up to 45 pound each and finally having bought the educational posters
39:14as a job lot Johnny's decided to price each one individually based on their condition and level of
39:20interest well let's get open yeah I don't know there's cute people waiting already hello feel free to
39:37move ask on the price I'll be honest with you everything's for sale
39:50oh cash for you thank you how much is that to you that's 15
39:57oh beautiful I love that pleasure I think 25 for the two
40:09seeing something you like we just have a question about this we don't think we can afford it but we
40:16feel like we'd really like to ask you about it's it's original this is genuine when you're saying
40:21you can't afford it unless it's something really insulting as a price you might surprise yourself
40:26what do you think what would you like to pay and I'll be just dead straight up with you with what
40:32I'm looking for off it we won't offend each other okay it's anybody before in our lives how much
40:38a fairground original horses we want it for the living room that's been ridden it's been played
40:46on and you can do a lot of the fairgrounds around the families it wasn't made by a grandmaster that
40:51no there would have been a family and the granddad would have cut all out yeah Johnny another member of
40:57the family would have painted it I'd like 240 on it that's authentic and the only reason I'll be
41:03honest with you I can do 240 years the lad sold me a couple of other things and he did me a really
41:09nice number on it is that the lowest yeah I've got to be a little bit strict on it because it will go
41:17mm-hmm if I'm honest we had a kind of what we would pay this to but we thought it would be a lot higher
41:23that's that was where we kind of pitched it that's why we were a bit scared to ask 240s it's a
41:28good price yeah I promise you why don't you go another ice cream have a think on it I think
41:39they'll be back can I squeeze past you sorry to be a nuisance thank you young man there we go
41:51we brought your beauty back taste very restored oh man that's mint I've taken all the grime off the
41:58handlebars and it should be ready to go no you've done it perfect it's not over done you know what
42:03I mean there's not another one on up for sale in England at the moment and the cheapest one is 195
42:09pounds just as a plane chair but as in played what missing the wheels missing yep just as a plane
42:16child's barber seat you're joking so you've done all right oh you've turned that frown upside down
42:23without having you he was gutted really yeah really was Dave that's fast I loved it I really liked it I
42:31was how was it yeah you were a bit you were really down-arty when you opened it up didn't you
42:35you've done it absolutely perfect oh Dave cheers we've got the best neighbor you're welcome thanks for
42:41that see you later thanks guys cheers Dave you're back we're back you knew we would I'll take it you're
42:54back because you you're back for liquor too we just know we'll never see another one again and it's like
43:00fake that we came out today and saw it we got to the car we shook hands on the deal and we just
43:05I can promise you 240 is great on that we agree I'm glad it's coming because I can see you going
43:12you're loving it more and more every second you're looking at it it's just brilliant thank you thank
43:18you for buying it cheers mate thank you so much cheers mate thank you
43:35that was great they're going away that you get the sense they're going to be repeat customers
43:46people are going to ask them where they got it they got it from here so it's like the best
43:51re-advert you can be passing on had a profit I haven't lost money what a great day
43:57and every sale is a confirmation that you belong and it got up
