00:00Yes, Italy is still part of the Paris Climate Agreement.
00:07Claims are circulating widely on social media that Italy has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement,
00:13which aims to limit the rise in global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.
00:17This post, with thousands of views, likes and shares,
00:20alleges that Italy is following in the footsteps of the US by leaving the accord,
00:24which was signed in 2015.
00:26It features a picture of Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney,
00:29but otherwise provides no extra information or evidence for the claim.
00:34Italy was an original signatory to the agreement,
00:36and the United Nations official treaty collection website still shows the country as being a member.
00:42Additionally, the country is covered by the European Union,
00:44which is also signatory to the agreement.
00:46Contrast this with the US, which the treaty collection notes as having withdrawn in 2020
00:51under President Donald Trump during his first term,
00:53and then rejoined in February 2021 under former US President Joe Biden.
00:58Since being elected, Trump has signed an executive order to once again leave the agreement,
01:03which is due to take place in January 2026.
01:06There's no evidence of Italy following suit, however.
01:09A Google search of keywords in both English and Italian shows no reputable reporting on the matter.
01:15There's also been no official announcement by the Italian government.
01:19Euroverify reached out to Italy's Environment Ministry,
01:22but didn't receive a response as of the time of recording.
01:24Prime Minister Maloney asserted her commitment to the Paris Agreement when she first took office in 2022.
01:30However, she's criticised other international climate initiatives,
01:33such as the EU's Green Deal, for being supposedly ideological in its approach.
01:38Maloney said that green policies that are too rigid could harm European industry,
01:43and has called for the continent to be more cautious to protect its economy and people.
