00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown.
00:32I hope your day has been OK so far.
00:35But if it hasn't, our aim here is always to take a bad day and make it better.
00:39So just remember to let us into your heart.
00:43Then we can start to make things better.
00:46Rachel Riley, name that song.
00:48Hey, Jude.
00:49That's obvious, obvious.
00:50This week, 54 years ago, I mean, it was phenomenal.
00:55It just took over the world.
00:56It was number one in a dozen countries, including the USA.
01:00And the UK.
01:01And I'm a huge, huge Beatles fan.
01:03Been lucky to interview and meet Paul McCartney on a couple of occasions.
01:08But I have to admit, I would go as far as I don't like Hey Jude.
01:13And I think it's because Queen's Jubilee, you know, Glastonbury, the big moment, the Olympics in London.
01:23Macca likes to wheel it out a lot.
01:25So all the times when everyone's enjoying themselves, you want to bring them down.
01:30I just think, I mean, if you're Paul McCartney, you have so many songs to choose from.
01:35Stop choosing Hey Jude.
01:37So it's overplayed, I think.
01:39What's the song that everyone celebrates that you think, you know what, I'd be happy never to hear that again?
01:45I think pretty much anything by the Bee Gees.
01:48What?
01:48If you have to pin me down to one, Staying Alive.
01:51It's just one of those songs that gets in your head.
01:54And whether you want it to or not, it's going to be playing over and over and over for the rest of the day.
01:58Absolutely crazy.
01:59I'll not argue with you, though.
02:01You win again as we get over the Dictionary Corner.
02:04As always, she carries the words upon her shoulders.
02:07Let's say Hey to Susie Dent.
02:11And beside her, no nanas needed, just Nina.
02:15It's actress and comedian, Nina Wadia.
02:19Have you got a song you love, don't you?
02:22I've got several.
02:23Yeah, right?
02:24And most of them are for children under the age of eight.
02:27Right, a lot of parents resent the kids songs.
02:29Yes, I do very much.
02:30And indeed, just resent their kids.
02:32Wonderful.
02:33Great to have you here.
02:34Let's welcome back our champion, who yesterday, Daniel Bloom, picked up as second win.
02:39I know you're a really big music fan.
02:41We've talked about that.
02:43But how did you end up, as a 17-year-old, applying the Common Countdown?
02:48Well, in March, I had COVID for a week and stuck in the house, nothing to do.
02:55So I sat on Countdown and started playing along, and I found that I was decent at it.
03:02Yeah.
03:03That's how we get most of our contestants, through illness.
03:07We'll take it any way we can.
03:09Daniel, you've two wins, but let's see if experience can win out.
03:12Jonathan Roebuck is here.
03:13Hi, Jonathan.
03:14Hi.
03:14So there's a family business you work in.
03:17Tell us all about it.
03:19I do, yeah.
03:19It's a pub in South Yorkshire in a place called Langsit.
03:22So listen, we knock off about three o'clock, you know, a couple of cars up there, a couple
03:27of designated drivers.
03:28We can make a night of this.
03:30Yeah.
03:31Right, let's move on.
03:32Jonathan and Daniel.
03:33First round's on you, though.

04:14And I'll talk about this in horsbuilding.

05:02That's that's a lot then if you got a six you were doing well
05:04Yeah, I was looking for Sloanie, but you're giving us a seven, but it's capital S West London Harrods that area

06:58I know what you're gonna say
07:00That's what I wrote down
07:04Yeah, capital G so that rules that out. Well, what's good when we capitalizing cheese for what type of country do we live in?

14:45um where I was taught how to use a 360 camera on the end of the stick and you literally are then left
14:52by the crew and the director and everyone and you're given a route and my route was through the
14:56Yorkshire Dales which were beautiful I didn't realize how gorgeous the country is up there
15:03and there's something about walking somewhere beautiful and letting your mind just go to wherever
15:09it wants to go to and it's really evocative and you just come away going oh my god why did I feel
15:14that why did I think that and you know um and you force yourself to think about subjects you don't
15:19particularly want to think about the program is um it's called walking with uh and it's beautiful
15:24I mean one thing I will say to you I think this should actually be incorporated into kind of mental
15:29health well-being yeah just generally the the NHS should prescribe that as a way to move forward
15:35preventative if you talk to to most health experts they they look at that as the future in
15:40so many ways whether it's mental health physical health preventative is is the key we save a
15:44lot of money definitely but there you go wonderful we'll save that for question time
15:48in the today show thank you very much nita
15:53right and back to the game as a champion's letters uh can i have a consonant please thank you daniel

19:37nine six nine one away jonathan no i lost it sorry lost it okay don't worry too much daniel one away is
20:07admirable let's find out how you got there uh five times two is ten five times two is ten add three
20:14add three 13 times it by 75 is 975 uh subtract nine to chuck nine nine six six and add three and add the
20:25second three yeah one away i was roughly the same one away in that was there any other way to get to 13
20:32rich to get your your to get one closer well if you try instead with 14 so nine plus five is 14 um 75 minus
20:44the two threes gives you 69 um times those together for 966 and you have a two left over nine six
20:53and the most tricky ones think bigger it's often the way right bless dan bless dan which is suitable

25:07And Daniel?
25:08I think an eight.
25:09OK, the seven is...?
25:10Retires.
25:11Daniel for an eight?
25:12Riveters.
25:13Riveters?
25:14Somebody...
25:15Yes, it is an addiction.
25:17That's brilliant.
25:17I didn't think it was in, but it is.
25:19You're not going to beat that, Nina.
25:20Let's not graze on this one.
25:22Let's not revisit.
25:23Let's not.
25:24In fact, let's pause.
25:25Let's pause.
25:26Yeah, and get origins of words.
25:28Let's graze a little.
25:29Well, thank you to Jane Capey,
25:32who emailed to ask a sweet question, actually.
25:35She's been wondering where the word smug comes from,
25:38and while we're at it, says Jane,
25:40snug is another one that comes to mind.
25:42Smug and snug.
25:44Two really sort of pithy,
25:45but quite onomatopoeic words, I think.
25:48No-one likes a smug person these days,
25:50but actually in the 16th century,
25:51you would have been quite popular,
25:53because it comes from the German schmuck,
25:55which meant pretty.
25:56But it was particularly in the sense
25:59of a neat or spruce gentleman.
26:02That's how it was used.
26:03And then it was eventually applied to women and girls,
26:06so you'll find she is indeed a good, smug lass
26:09in a play from 1677.
26:12But it could also mean sort of quite smooth.
26:14So Shakespeare used it that way
26:16when he refers to the smug and silver trend,
26:19but a really positive, positive thing.
26:21And from that idea of being a smooth operator,
26:23you get the idea of somebody who was a bit vainglorious
26:25and a little bit sort of proud of themselves,
26:28if you like,
26:28which is where the sense of smug comes in today.
26:31So it was once very popular and very positive.
26:35Snug has always been a sailor's term.
26:38That comes from German, or Dutch possibly,
26:40and it meant ship shape,
26:42or properly prepared for bad weather.
26:44So you can imagine that if you go into a snug part of the ship,
26:47you would literally be under the weather,
26:49because you would be under the bad weather
26:51if you weren't feeling particularly good,
26:52the bad weather on deck,
26:53you would go to the snuggery and get comfortable.
26:57And in fact, the snuggery we owe to Charles Dickens.
27:01Dickens was a great neologiser,
27:02gave us lots of new words.
27:04He gave us butterfingers and flummoxed and the creeps.
27:08He also gave us the snuggery.
27:09And also, if you were feeling particularly angry,
27:11he gave us the growlery as well,
27:12where you would go off and let off steam.
27:15But a small, comfortable room in a pub
27:17was known as a snug from the 1830s.
27:19And it's always, as I say,
27:21had that wonderful idea of something warm, cosy and comfortable.
27:24I love it.
27:27Wonderful.
27:28Right, let's get more letters now from Jonathan.
27:30Lever, consonant, please.
27:32Thank you, Jonathan.
27:33C.

28:31Yeah.
28:32Weird, this one.
28:33Jonathan?
28:34I've guessed it a five.
28:35OK.
28:35Well, what's the four?
28:37Mice.
28:38Yeah.
28:38No worries there.
28:39Jonathan?
28:40Meist.
28:41Meist?
28:42No.
28:43OK.
28:44It's not there, maust, but not meist.
28:46Sorry.
28:47I think I have another living creature that might be a five.
28:51Did you get that, Nina?
28:52No, I didn't.
28:53But I got a seven.
28:55No.
28:56A very comedic seven.
28:58Forget my image.
28:59What's the seven?
29:00Comedic.
29:01Comedic!
29:02Yes!
29:02That is some going.
29:06Did you spot it nice and early?
29:08No.
29:08Very late.
29:09In fact, I wrote it after the buzzer finished.
29:11It doesn't count, but never mind.
29:13We'll allow it.
29:14That's brilliant.
29:15There you go.
29:16Comedic for seven.
29:17Well done if you got that at home.

30:28Six.
30:29And Jonathan?
30:30Six.
30:32That was a nervy six.
30:33What's yours, Jonathan?
30:34Borium.
30:35Borium.
30:36And Daniel?
30:37Berium.
30:38Borium.
30:39Is that horticulture?
30:40Is that connected to the garden?
30:42I think of borage and that kind of thing.
30:44There's burium, but not borium, I'm afraid, but there is barium.
30:48Yeah.
30:49I tell you what, Jonathan, in loads of rounds,
30:50you've been one letter out of being a legend.
30:52It's been that close.
30:53It's that close sometimes.
30:55Let's go to dictionary corner, where it's no laughing matter.
31:00For Nina, what have we got?
31:01Berium.
31:02Same.
31:02Same.
31:03Nothing else.
31:04There is a seven there with rampion, which is a Eurasian plant,
31:08and some of them have a root that you can eat in a salad.
31:11I've never had it in a salad.
31:12Anyone here?
31:12Does it go with cheese?
31:14Yeah, probably.
31:15We'll have it.
31:15We'll have it.
31:17Right, so one more numbers round to go.
31:19Jonathan, it's all yours.
31:20Can I have two large, please, Rachel?
31:22You can, indeed.
31:24Thank you, Jonathan.
31:24Two large.
31:25Four little ones, final numbers of the day.
31:28And they are seven, nine, seven, ten.
31:32And the big ones, 125.
31:35And the target, 806.

31:56OK, 8.06 was the target. Jonathan, how close?
32:138.13.
32:148.13, so seven away. Daniel?
32:168.07, not entirely written down.
32:19One away, off you go.
32:20Nine to track seven is two.
32:23Nine, take seven, two.
32:24Ten to track two is eight.
32:26Ten less two, eight.
32:28Times 100.
32:29800.
32:30That's a seven.
32:31Yep, that gets you to one away.
32:34Seven points, how do we get ten, Rich?
32:36You have to leave it with me, lots of ways to one away.
32:39Well, what a time to leave you,
32:40because it is conundrum time on Countdown today.
32:44Daniel's going to get his third win,
32:45but can he get over 100?
32:47And Jonathan, always good to go away
32:48with a conundrum under your belt.
32:49So let's see how we do.
32:51Fingers on the buzzers, let's reveal today's
32:53Countdown Conundrum.

33:38Yes!

33:44We send you away, Jonathan, with a goodie bag and, of course, the memory that you've offered
33:48was all free drinks.
33:51Nina loves a walk.
33:52She'll be there.
33:53Don't worry.
33:54Daniel, my goodness, you might be 18 by the time you leave us.
33:57Another week of wins.
33:59You'll be an octo-champ.
34:00Well done.
34:00Susie, Nina, see you tomorrow?
34:02Yes.
34:02See you then.
34:03I bought it.
34:04Bit of business, Riley, bit of business.
34:05To avoid the truckload of complaints, you can have got it with 100 minus 25 is 75, times
34:12that by 10 for 750, and then 7 times 9 is 63.
34:18Add that on and take the other 7 for 806.
