00:00President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in his stance towards Russia,
00:04threatening 100% secondary tariffs if a peace deal with Ukraine is not reached within 50 days.
00:10This ultimatum follows promises of Patriot missiles and other military aid to Ukraine,
00:15marking a stark departure from Trump's previously more sympathetic tone towards Russia and its
00:20President, Vladimir Putin. Trump did not offer details on how the tariffs could be implemented,
00:25such as whether they would target specific products or industries.
00:30Alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Ruda after a private meeting Monday, Trump said,
00:35quote,
00:36Russia was previously spared during his first round of Liberation Day levies because the nation
00:46already faced high sanctions, the White House said at the time. Trump has repeatedly threatened Russia
00:51with higher trade barriers since he took office in January, as Russia shows few signs of de-escalating
00:57the conflict with Ukraine. In January, he threatened tariffs against, quote,
01:02anything being sold by Russia to the United States. He even extended the threat to other
01:08participating countries without providing specifics. In March, as the rift between Trump and Putin grew,
01:14he detailed a more specific policy of 25% tariffs on Russian oil. On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly
01:21promised to end the war in Ukraine, which he consistently blamed on former President Joe Biden.
01:27He repeatedly boasted that he could end the war between the two nations in 24 hours,
01:32but the administration's attempts to negotiate with Putin have so far ended without any deals.
