00:00When they came to the set, we shot in Svalbard, Norway, for four days,
00:05and then we came back here, we shot that scene, which is like 10 minutes of the film,
00:09and the first two days of shooting, and they both came in and they just nailed it.
00:18What were the biggest ideas or emotional beats that you knew had to be part of the story?
00:24I think the main thing that I wanted to hit was,
00:27there's been a lot of Superman movies, and the thing that is not always the most important
00:34is Superman's character and the way in which he changes.
00:39And so I really wanted to put that front and center,
00:42that this is a movie about a big, broad, spectacle situation in which the Earth is in danger,
00:50and people are in danger, and dogs and squirrels are in danger,
00:54but it's also a personal story about Superman, his relation to himself, and his relationship to Lois Lane,
01:00and that's as important as all that big stuff.
01:03Will the movie include origin stories of the Justice Society characters,
01:08and how did you approach introducing them in a way that feels accessible to long-time fans,
01:14and then the new ones?
01:15Well, I don't have any origin stories, though.
01:17I mean, I don't, you know, like, I think that we have been reading comic books long enough,
01:23and we've been watching cartoons long enough with superheroes,
01:26and we've been seeing movies long enough with superheroes that we're able to say,
01:30okay, there's a girl with wings, you know, I don't need to know how exactly those wings came about.
01:37I see her, she is.
01:38What was important to me was that her personality was very clear,
01:41and so Isabella Merced brought Hawkgirl to life.
01:44Same thing with Guy Gardner and Nathan Fillion,
01:46same thing with Eddie Gataygi and Mr. Terrific.
01:49We don't see where they came from, but we know that there's metahumans in this world,
01:53maybe we'll get the answers later on, maybe we won't,
01:56but what matters in this movie is the present situation and the problems they're facing in the moment.
02:02So in the trailer, there's this intense interview scene between Lois Lane and Superman, right?
02:08How did you walk through David and then Rachel for that scene?
02:13I was really fortunate because, you know,
02:15we get a little bit of time for rehearsal in a movie like this, but not a lot.
02:19And the truth is our screen test was that scene.
02:23So I was able to kind of practice shooting and directing them in that scene
02:31months and months before we ever actually did the scene.
02:35So when they came to the set, those was the, we shot in Svalbard, Norway for four days.
02:41And then we came back here, we shot those at scene, which is like 10 minutes of the film
02:46and the first two days of shooting.
02:48And they both came in and they just nailed it.
02:51And so I didn't really have to direct them that much.
02:53I gave them little bits of do this faster, say this faster, do this in a little bit of a different way.
02:59Oh, that's, this is what I mean here.
03:01Um, but for the most part, they were very, very well prepared and we were able to just
03:05shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.
03:07And it was great.
03:08So my last question, what's the heart of your film and what part of Superman's story
03:13do you hope sticks with the audience?
03:16There's a sadness almost to this movie in a way because the world wants a Superman.
03:21We want to have a Superman among us.
03:24Uh, we want a person in power who we believe is going to be looking out for, for the little
03:30man, for the little woman.
03:32Um, and that's not the case.
03:35So what I really hope is that people who go to the theater see the Superman inside themselves.
03:42They see the bit of power that they have as a human being to reach out and look out for
03:47each other.
03:48Um, and if we can do that just a little bit, I think the movie is the greatest success I'll
03:52ever have in my life.
03:53Um, and if we can do that just a little bit, let's have a look.
03:56Um, and if we can do that just a little bit, let's have a look.
03:57Let's go.
