Bilton School has U-turned and apologised after segregating a pupil for celebrating her British heritage on culture day. Grade A student Courtney Wright, 12, wore a Union Flag dress and wrote a piece about history and traditions as part of the celebrations at the school on Friday.
00:00Hi, my name is Courtney Wright, I go to school. I went to school in Ness on Friday and they told me that I had to change and it wasn't inappropriate and only the other cultures were allowed to celebrate and not the British culture and I think all cultures should be allowed to celebrate their own culture, especially the British culture as well.
00:25I felt really embarrassed. I was made to sit in reception all day and all my friends were getting angry while the teachers were doing that because my dress was like wonderful.
00:38I had like maybe one or two teachers say, is that like ginger spice? I had other teachers say, I don't know if your dress really sparkly but most teachers said no.
00:51And when I wrote my speech, they point back views to read it and they didn't want to hear it at all.
01:00My speech was about diversity and all our traditions that we have in Britain, our politeness, our humour and for example like we drink tea, we talk about the weather a lot and we like rugby and football.
01:22It also shows my nationality as well, where I come from and it's sparkly as well.
01:27School has a new turn and they have apologised on the internet and I've been in the head office as well.
01:33Even though they've suggested me reading my speech and wearing my dress, I don't think I want to after how they embarrassed me and upset me.
01:41Maybe we might've left the challenge but I have some teachers saying no.
01:43I could do my job on the internet and I can't have a partner with my staff and I want to캬 button.
01:44It's like, you know, it's like, I'm happy to make it.
01:46That's right, you know, you're on the internet and you're on the internet and you're on the internet,
01:50you're on the internet that grew up and there's an internet.
01:51I've been thinking about it and there were people that couldn't stop doing,
01:55it's like, you know, you have to meet me all the time and I thought I looked like.
02:00I'm looking forward to it.
02:02If you're interested in it, I'm not my son-looking.
02:04I love you.
02:06I wanted to sort of like, you know, how am I doing this way?
