00:00I knew that my father and his sister were in Auschwitz.
00:08I also knew that you don't ask your father about the Holocaust.
00:15Erno Zvi Spiegel was 29 years old when he was deported,
00:19along with 430,000 Hungarian Jews, to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
00:24Mengelet was going along and asked for Zwillinge.
00:31Zwillinge is German for twins.
00:33I was 11 years old.
00:3411.
00:35Big.
00:38The first question was, when can we see our mother?
00:42He said, I'm sorry, but look at the flames over there.
00:47Sometimes siblings who bore a striking resemblance to each other
00:50were mistakenly identified as twins.
00:54Erno Spiegel changed the boys' birthdates, making them twins,
00:59and effectively saving their lives.
01:01They gave it to the rest of the family.
01:04They were able to do it.
01:08Children were spared from immediate death if they were twins,
01:12alive but destined to become subjects in the macabre experiments
01:15of the camp's chief doctor, Joseph Mengele.
01:18I started trying for a little while and then never again.
01:24Though he was in charge of the twins, Spiegel was also a subject of Mengele's experiments.
01:31Through it all, he remained focused on the well-being of the boys.
01:34He started teaching us a little bit of math here, a little bit of geography.
01:38He was a father figure to us.
01:40I saw the first Russian soldier passing by under the window.
01:46And that's it.
01:47That's liberation.
01:48Spiegel had the idea of assembling the kids and taking them home.
01:54They faced the prospect of a long and dangerous journey back to their homes,
01:58uncertain if those homes even still existed.
02:01We went on trucks, trains, walked.
02:04In that bitter cold, it took us nearly two months.
02:10Not many people can say that they owe their life to some stranger.
02:17It is a story that the hero is my father.
02:21But the questions that we should ask ourselves,
02:25who are we?
02:27And what would we choose to do?
02:29Thank you.
