00:00Multiple sightings,
00:02a £10,000 reward for information,
00:04and a massive police hunt.
00:08And still, Constance Martin
00:10and Mark Gordon managed to travel
00:12hundreds of miles from the north of the country
00:14to the south.
00:16This is how they evaded the authorities.
00:18Constance Martin was reported missing on the 5th of January.
00:32That same evening, the car she'd been travelling in
00:34with partner Mark Gordon caught fire on the M61 near Bolton.
00:38Van driver Ken Hudson had been behind them on the motorway.
00:42He pulled over to help them and called the emergency services.
00:45The couple left on foot, heading towards Bolton.
00:50They left behind a placenta,
00:52wrapped in a towel and Martin's passport,
00:54along with a bag of more than 30 mobile phones,
00:57used nappies, a cat in a pet carrier,
01:00and a Bible.
01:01A local resident gave them a lift into Bolton,
01:04where they were seen at the Bolton Interchange bus station,
01:07before deciding to take a taxi 35 miles to Liverpool,
01:10paying £80.
01:12From there, they flagged down another taxi,
01:14which took them 270 miles across the country to Harwich in Essex.
01:19Driver Ali Yaria said the woman was shivering,
01:22and he saw a baby inside the woman's jacket,
01:25wearing only a nappy.
01:27In Harwich, they checked into a Premier Inn using a false name,
01:31Thomas.
01:32Hotel staff said Martin paid in cash,
01:35and seemed, quote, quite distressed.
01:37After being asked to leave in the morning,
01:39because they couldn't provide proof of identity,
01:41they moved to the Friatt Hotel for the night.
01:44They checked out early the next morning.
01:46Martin was seen outside Harwich Port two hours later.
01:49A member of the public confronted the couple,
01:52having seen a news report about their disappearance.
01:55Dale Gosling said that a baby was wrapped inside Martin's coat,
01:59and that he heard crying.
02:01The couple then took a taxi from Harwich to Colchester.
02:04Then, later that morning, another taxi from Colchester to East Ham in East London.
02:10CCTV showed the couple getting out of the cab with their baby girl, Victoria.
02:16Martin cradling the child under her jacket.
02:19Later that day, Gordon bought a buggy in Argos,
02:22before meeting Martin in a kebab shop.
02:25She assembled the buggy and then put the baby in.
02:29They then took a series of taxis around London,
02:32abandoning the buggy and, prosecutors said,
02:35transferring the baby to a little shopping bag instead.
02:39From North London, they headed to the port town of New Haven,
02:42arriving at five in the morning.
02:44A CCTV camera and a petrol station shows them wandering around in the early hours,
02:50before heading towards the South Downs on foot.
02:55They weren't seen again until four days later.
02:58Martin was back at the garage, buying sweets, snacks and petrol.
03:02They claimed the baby had already died by this point.
03:06The next sighting was on the outskirts of Brighton.
03:09Gordon was spotted emerging from a tent in the woods in Stanmer Park.
03:14Two weeks later, the Met Police offered a £10,000 reward for information.
03:19But it was more than a fortnight before witnesses reported further sightings.
03:24One near Hollingbury Golf Course in Brighton.
03:27Another in the Caldeen Lane area of the city.
03:30And back in Stanmer Park a day later.
03:33Witness Pauline Mason told the court she saw a mother with a baby who she believed was dead.
03:39On the 20th of February, the pair were captured on CCTV,
03:43trying and failing to break into Hollingbury Golf Course and rummaging through the bins.
03:48A week later, they were back in the same area.
03:51This time though, they would not go unnoticed.
03:54Their run was about to come to an end.
03:57They were spotted in a local shop, buying food and withdrawing cash.
04:01A member of the public who recognised them from media reporting called the police.
04:05And a few minutes later, the couple were arrested in nearby Stanmer Villas.
04:10You're under us for child neglects?
04:12Where is the child?
04:15They were repeatedly asked where the child was.
04:19Where's the child?
04:21Is the child alive?
04:23That day, the police launched a large scale search for the baby.
04:27More than 200 officers covered an area of 7 miles by 13 miles to look for the baby,
04:32from where the couple were sighted to where they were arrested.
04:35Over the next few days, an area of 90 square miles was scoured,
04:39using dogs, drones, thermal cameras and a helicopter.
04:43On March 1, police found baby Victoria's body in a disused shed near the allotments.
04:50This is the moment when baby Victoria's remains are found inside a little shopping bag.
04:56There may have been little hope at that stage of finding the child alive.
05:00But this was an ending more disturbing than anyone had thought.
