00:08A HALLOWEEN STORY

00:10THE DEVIL'S MASK

00:14It was almost Halloween, and tomorrow all the children could wear their Halloween costumes to school.

00:25They could show their friends and teachers their special costumes.

00:31Were they funny? Were they pretty? Were they scary?

00:39Jay and his sister Angela wanted something special to wear.

00:44They thought it would be fun to go as opposites.

00:50Angela wanted to be a pretty angel, while Jay wanted to be a scary devil.

00:59The best place to buy costumes was at a shop called Masks & More.

01:08Masks & More had been in the town forever.

01:12It was a very, very old shop.

01:16It was run by a grumpy man named Mr. Crunch.

01:21He was also very, very old.

01:27Jay and Angela walked into the store and told Mr. Crunch what they wanted.

01:33Mr. Crunch pointed to one side of the store and said,

01:38All of the pretty, cute and happy costumes are over there.

01:44He then pointed to the opposite side of the store.

01:49Ugly, dark and scary costumes are there.

01:54Angela skipped over and quickly found the perfect costume.

02:02It was a long white dress with two sparkly wings and a golden halo.

02:09She would be the prettiest angel in school, she thought.

02:14I want this, Angela said and ran back to Mr. Crunch to show him.

02:21Jay looked through all the costumes on his side of the store.

02:27Everything was black or brown.

02:30There was fur.

02:32There were fangs.

02:34There were tails.

02:37It all looked the same though.

02:40Finally, he found a tag that said,

02:44Little Devil.

02:46He looked at the costume.

02:49It was black pants, a white button-up shirt, a deep red vest, and a pitchfork.

02:59He really liked it, but was it scary enough?

03:04Jay put it on the counter.

03:06I want this one, please, he said.

03:10As Mr. Crunch was ringing it up, Jay noticed something scary.

03:17On the wall behind Mr. Crunch was a mask.

03:22He gasped.

03:26It was dark red with angry black eyebrows and two openings for eyes.

03:33There was a big hooked nose and under that, a black-lipped, frowning mouth.

03:42It also had two long black horns on its forehead.

03:46It looked like a real devil's face.

03:50Goosebumps prickled Jay's skin.

03:54He got a strange feeling in his stomach like he wanted to run away.

03:59The sign below it read,

04:03Do not touch.

04:05Not for sale.

04:08Jay also noticed a metal ring on one side of the mask.

04:15Through the ring ran a rusty old chain.

04:21It was connected to the wall.

04:24Jay's stomach did flip-flops.

04:27Oh, Mr. Crunch!

04:29I want that too!

04:31He pointed.

04:34Mr. Crunch's face turned serious.

04:37He shook his head.

04:39That mask is not for sale.

04:42It was here when I bought this store.

04:45It's dangerous.

06:42His costume was nice, but it wasn't that scary.

07:05He found Meatball five years ago.

07:40On the walk to the park, Jay told Meatball all about his problem.

07:49He needed that devil mask.

07:52Meatball trotted along.

07:54He wagged his tail.

07:56Sometimes he'd look up and bark to show he understood.

08:03Jay always felt better talking to Meatball.

08:08That night, Jay laid his costume out on his chair.

08:13He climbed into bed.

08:18And they went to sleep.

08:21Jay had scary dreams that night and didn't sleep well.

08:27He woke up late.

08:29His sister was singing happily in the other room.

08:32She must be dressed in her angel costume, Jay thought.

08:37Jay rubbed his eyes and went to pet Meatball.

08:42But Meatball was gone.

08:44He looked around the room.

08:46Meatball was growling.

08:49But at what?

08:52That's when Jay saw it.

08:56He jumped out of bed.

08:58On top of his little devil costume was the devil mask from yesterday.

09:04It was staring at him.

09:23Meatball was now whimpering and scratching at the door.

09:34He tried it on and looked in the mirror.

10:13He put on the little devil costume and went out for breakfast.

10:31At school, Jay took the devil's mask out of his backpack and put it on.

10:38The low sound started again.

10:46He suddenly felt bigger and stronger and meaner.

11:00He was the scariest kid in the whole school.

11:03All day long, the other children moved away and pointed.

11:11Even the teachers were afraid.

11:14But Jay felt powerful.

11:16Sometimes he bumped into students.

11:19Sometimes he tripped them with his pitchfork.

11:24He didn't listen to his teachers.

11:27And sometimes he snuck up and yelled,

11:34Everyone was afraid of Jay.

11:38By the end of the day, Jay felt very big and very strong and very mean.

11:45Even his sister Angela didn't want to walk home with him.

11:50So he walked home alone.

11:54He was the biggest, the scariest, the meanest person in the whole town, he thought.

12:04By the time he reached his house, he felt like a volcano.

12:09He felt like he would explode.

12:11He also wanted to do something very bad.

12:16Maybe he would break his mother's favorite coffee cup.

12:22Jay, his mother said.

12:24Her face was white.

12:25That is the scariest mask I've ever seen.

12:29Jay smiled.

12:32And the mask smiled.

12:34His mother nervously handed him the dog chain she was holding.

12:39Honey, it's time to walk Meatball.

12:42She quickly left the room.

12:45Jay remembered his best friend.

12:49Where was he?

12:51That was strange.

12:52Usually, after school, Meatball met him at the door.

12:57He wagged his tail and barked.

12:59But today, he was across the room.

14:08Said Jay.

14:10Angela set the bag on the counter.

14:13Jay handed Mr. Crunch the chain.

14:16It was clipped on the metal ring in the mask.

14:21Both Jay and Angela saw a rusty, broken chain behind Mr. Crunch.

14:31Mr. Crunch pulled the scary devil mask from the bag.

14:34It looked like it did the day before.

14:38Two angry eyes, frowning mouth, and horns.

14:44It wasn't smiling or winking.

14:47It's too dangerous, Jay said.

14:52Angela pointed the pitchfork at the mask and nodded.

14:58Said Mr. Crunch.

15:00This is a strong chain.

15:02It won't escape again.

15:05Just then, there was a happy bark.

15:09Jay looked down.

15:13I know, boy.

15:15You were right, he said.

15:18Now, let's all go to the park and play.
