00:01At this lab in the University of Withwater Strand in South Africa, scientists are developing HIV vaccines.
00:09But a week before clinical trials were set to begin, the Trump administration has announced it will pull funding, putting years of critical research at risk.
00:19In South Africa, I would say the research community is still relatively small and it's not always possible for everybody to secure that funding and to be able to do their work.
00:35So it's not always possible for the very impactful work to be done.
00:40So it's always a concern and at the moment we are also trying to source funding to be able to continue this work.
00:47But again, we do not know whether we will be successful and that has impact on the research.
00:56It has impact on the individuals carrying out the research.
00:59The upcoming project called Brilliant aimed to tap into the region's genetic diversity to advance HIV research globally.
01:07Whilst with funding cut, South Africa has already lost 8,000 HIV health workers threatening the programme's future.
01:13My position is grant funded. So if there are grants, if the fund is available, the grant is there, then they are able to pay for my salary.
01:25And with my salary, I also help at home. I also pay for some of my studies and all of that stuff.
01:33So finding that this has happened, it's affected me in the long run.
01:42South Africa's government says it will be extremely tough to replace the funding once provided by the US.
01:47Without it, HIV infections are expected to rise and access to medication will become even more limited, putting millions at risk and threatening years of progress in the fight against the virus.
01:59South Africa's government says it's COVID-19 virus.
02:00heroes' cases but seriously, have it also reduced MATT olması into the state's 길ой in January to reopen the priority.
02:03Look at COVID-19 virus, you're not sure thatилиmad.
02:09We automatically run a national activity of COVID-19 virus.
02:11We do not have a national activity.
02:13All those witnesses, get it over the realise of COVID-19 virus.
02:17To be honest, other people are clearly a state of emergency support in the country by the U.S..
02:19We've got these redonnen in Newås, reminds us, and the weather here.
02:22We'reēre would keep coming up to großartig مع obliged.
02:24So as patients we're choosing to represent the experience with COVID-19 virus.
02:25I suggest it can't rid us all the peoplesy now on something global.
