00:00Sharks. One of the most feared and persecuted animals on the planet.
00:22Since the release of Jaws 50 years ago, they've been public enemy number one.
00:33Arriving in the Bahamas, the shark capital of the world, are a team of celebrities determined to conquer their fears and decide whether it's safe to get back in the water.
00:48All I've got is the Jaws theme going around my head.
00:52What are we doing?
00:55You're all sad.
00:58I'm just happy to be alive. I felt so alive. I'm happy I'm still alive.
01:04Hello shark. Nothing to see here.
01:07You just get eaten by a shark. That's a hell of a story at the funeral, innit?
01:11There's a shark!
01:13Oh, Christ.
01:15I want to come out! I want to come out! Please!
01:21With the help of world-renowned shark experts.
01:24The mission that these celebrities are about to embark on is no easy feat at all.
01:32We're at a tipping point. We have to end this renegade against sharks because we don't have sharks in the ocean. We are in trouble.
01:38Don't harass them and they won't mess with you.
01:40I'm not harassing anybody down there.
01:43Can they learn to love the most feared predator on the planet?
01:49They keep saying you'll be fine with the sharks as long as you don't panic.
01:53But what if you do panic?
01:55Then you're eating.
01:57How, how, how, how, how, how is that going to work?
02:03How fast can you book a return home flight?
02:06When people saw Jaws back in the day, they wouldn't even go in the bath for a week.
02:24I saw that and went, I'm never going near a shark.
02:28And here I am doing this.
02:34I love animals.
02:35I'm not ashamed to say, but I don't love sharks.
02:38I think they are savage tubes of teeth.
02:41I've had this desire to scuba dive with sharks for a really long time.
02:56But maybe the jet lag is fogging my brain and I'm going to get there and go, absolutely not.
03:02If I find out that this short is called Britain's Tastiest Celebrity, I will not be happy.
03:14Let me look at the gal. Take it easy, bruv.
03:17I'm going to sit on here and I'm going to put the chair over there first.
03:23Right?
03:24It wasn't pretty, but I made it.
03:26It was good.
03:27Nobody goes into the water to actively find sharks.
03:33It's just, it does not seem sensible.
03:37Them sharks can't mess with me.
03:40As soon as they hear that string music,
03:44they get all teethy.
03:48Feels serious now, doesn't it?
03:49It does.
03:50Are we going to be terrified or reassured after this?
03:53I hope we're going to be reassured.
03:54Have you seen there's a whole load of wetsuits lined up over there?
03:57Are they ours?
03:58Oh, yeah.
04:00I'm so, so, so excited about this experience.
04:04But there is definitely a chance that I might get underwater, panic and that's it.
04:08You just don't know, you know, those little thoughts in your head will do to you.
04:12I'm wondering why there's extra seats.
04:14That's in case one of us gets eaten.
04:17I have a fear of the sea.
04:20I have a fear of the sea.
04:23Probably been up to my knees in the last 20 years.
04:28What am I doing here?
04:31Hi, everybody.
04:33Hey, what's up?
04:34What's going on?
04:36How you doing? What's up?
04:37I'm good.
04:39How you doing?
04:40Nice to meet you.
04:41Nice to meet you.
04:42How you going, guys?
04:43Hello, how are you?
04:44You all right?
04:45Hello.
04:46How's the breeze for you?
04:47My name is Dr. Tristan Guttridge.
04:48I'm a shark biologist.
04:50I actually lived here in Bimini for over a decade and this is where I did my PhD research.
04:55And hey, everybody.
04:56I am Danny Washington.
04:57I am a marine scientist as well as a shark conservationist.
05:01I'm a Miami girl with Jamaican heritage and I've been diving, scuba diving for the past 20 years.
05:05Nice to meet you.
05:06I'm Paul DeGelder.
05:07For 12 years, I was serving in the Australian Defence Forces.
05:11At work one day in 2009, I was swimming in Sydney Harbour on a counter-terrorism training mission
05:17and I was attacked by a 10-foot bull shark.
05:20Grabbed me by my hand and my right leg in the same bite and decided it wanted them more than I did
05:26and decided to remove them from my body in a very violent fashion.
05:29And I ended up having to swim back to my safety boat with one hand and one leg through a pool of my own blood.
05:36Thankfully, due to the medical skills of my teammates, I survived here today, half cyborg.
05:42But since the attack, I've actually dedicated much of my time and my life to promoting the conservation of sharks.
05:50Because the real danger is not an ocean with sharks, it's an ocean without them.
05:56Still to this day, tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of sharks are killed every year.
06:02There are nothing better than greed, ignorance or selfishness.
06:07What a dude. He was attacked by a shark and is now working to save them.
06:14It's like a Jedi.
06:17And our mission is pretty simple. Sharks do have a bad reputation.
06:21And we want to try and change that perception with your help.
06:27And this is not another one of those shows where celebrities get voted off.
06:30We're going to go on this journey together.
06:32Remember you're here for the long haul and you're going to need to work together as a team.
06:37Because ultimately, at the end of this whole journey, we want you to experience that amazing connection that you can have with these incredible animals.
06:45And hopefully at the end of it, you will be shark advocates for life.
06:49And to do that, we've got some work to do.
06:52And we're going to get you all in the water with one of the most majestic yet powerful sharks, the bull shark.
06:59We're not going to do that like today. You're meeting bull sharks today.
07:04What the...
07:06Today?
07:07Yes.
07:08In the water?
07:12I'm going to swear, yeah.
07:17I don't want to be anywhere near the ones that don't give a fuck about human beings.
07:20So currently, bull sharks are listed as vulnerable, which means that they're at high risk of extinction.
07:26They're extremely important in the ocean in general.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Sharks are considered the custodians of the sea.
07:30They take care of all the sick, dying or injured animals.
07:33So our job here is to see them, experience them, but also to protect them.
07:38Yeah.
07:39It's one of the most iconic species.
07:41When you think shark, it's like great white tiger bull shark.
07:45I've never had a huge amount of compassion for the sharks, but I understand that we're going to learn through this journey that we're all on that they're not total monsters.
08:00We have a short video here for you to watch.
08:02Look at that!
08:07Look at that!
08:08Look!
08:09Oh!
08:10I mean, look at it. Menacing.
08:12If you look at them face on, they're very bulky, very sturdy.
08:15They have very muscular jaw.
08:17And pound for pound, they actually have the strongest bite of any shark, including the great white.
08:22We'll just leave it there.
08:24Oh, wow.
08:25Sharks evolved to be near-perfect hunting machines.
08:30200 million years before dinosaurs roamed the planet.
08:35They're an apex predator.
08:37When they reach adulthood, they will eat turtles, they will eat dolphins, and they actually eat other sharks.
08:43They're a shark eater, too.
08:45They look massive.
08:46How big are they?
08:48What?
08:49Oh!
08:50Oh, my God!
08:51The world record bull shark is just over four metres long, so it's a big, big animal.
08:54Oh!
08:55Yeah!
08:56For now, you might be wondering why we would want to put you into the ocean, surrounded by an animal that nearly killed me.
09:05Yeah, we're really interested in that.
09:07I have great news for you.
09:09For today, with your bull sharks, but only for today, you will be inside a cage.
09:15We want to get you in the water with these big, majestic predators.
09:19So we're doing that today. We're going to be in a cage today.
09:22We're here to support you every step of the way. We're going to be by your side the entire time.
09:26Not head first.
09:27Are we seeing our heads under the water? We are.
09:28Completely submerged.
09:29We'll be all around you.
09:30Yeah.
09:31You will be in the whole cage. You'll be completely enclosed.
09:32When a guy with one arm, one leg telling us that it's okay for us to get close to them, I think two things. Either he's lost his mind, or he's got a good point.
09:50Now we're going to see the exact shark that hit him. Wow.
09:56All right, so let's get our wetsuits on, guys. Let's go.
09:58Let's do this. Thank you very much for that.
10:00All right, you're welcome.
10:02Just really, I'm very surprised that this is happening today.
10:07I thought we'd just be getting used to the water at this point, and then the sharks would come much later down the line.
10:13I have a problem with water. Getting my head under water is just, that's a massive thing for me to start with.
10:20Where do you decide to do this?
10:22Because I have two young children who love to swim, and at the moment I can't get in the sea with them because I'm so scared.
10:29And I can't let them be in the sea without me.
10:31Yeah.
10:32So I have to do this.
10:33I really am confronting one of my biggest fears. So if I can do this, I can do anything.
10:40Where's mine?
10:42Dougie, Lenny.
10:44Oh, here's mine.
10:45But it's all starting to feel very real now.
10:47It wasn't a surprise that we were going to be in the water with sharks at some point.
10:51We just didn't think it was going to be today.
10:53How fast can you book a return home flight?
10:59Before the team come face to face with any sharks, they'll need some training from dive instructor Alex.
11:06Regulators are designed so if you needed to puke, you can do it.
11:11Have they been satisfied?
11:13The smell of rubber.
11:16The X-Men have let themselves go on.
11:19Yeah.
11:21Take your regulators.
11:22Put them in your mouth.
11:23Is it good?
11:24Am I doing it right?
11:25No complaints.
11:26You're just going to duck your head in the water and just breathe on them for about 30 seconds.
11:30I don't swim very much.
11:32I'm the one who goes in on the last day of the holiday.
11:35Because I kind of think, oh, I should go in now.
11:38A little twisted here.
11:40I've been scared of the water at times in my life.
11:42I nearly drowned when I was at primary school.
11:44And a teacher had to jump in to save me from the swimming pool in all his clothes.
11:49It was quite traumatic for me.
11:51I just hope there's nothing like that here.
11:53Take your faces.
11:54All the way.
11:55All the way down.
11:56The issue is just getting my head underwater and staying underwater for long enough to see
12:09a single fish.
12:10You're not supposed to come up.
12:11Sorry.
12:12You're doing so good.
12:13You're only done for, like, ten seconds.
12:14You need, like, at least, like, a minute.
12:15Okay.
12:16Okay?
12:17I hate it.
12:18What's the main thing?
12:19I just hate being underwater.
12:20Okay.
12:21That's it.
12:22I remember when I was very young, I was at a swimming party.
12:27I remember going underwater, looking up, and foam mats had been chucked on top of where
12:36I was sort of coming up.
12:37I couldn't get out.
12:38So I think there is a fear there.
12:41There's something in me that thinks, don't go underwater because you don't know if you're
12:44going to make your way back up.
12:46I feel deeply pathetic.
12:49I'm really sort of disappointed in myself.
12:52I'm sort of a bit embarrassed, I guess.
13:03There are over 40 species of sharks in the Bahamas, and most of those can be found off the
13:08coast of Bimini.
13:09One of those most dangerous and feared is the bull shark.
13:18Bimini has always been famous for its fishing.
13:21People would come back to the dock, and they would scrape the fish and throw those scraps
13:26in the water, and the bull sharks would then associate this dock with food.
13:33This provides us with a great opportunity to get our celebrities in the water with these apex predators.
13:39If we're going to change their perceptions of sharks, this is an important step in confronting their fears.
13:53I'll be very disappointed with myself if I don't rise to the challenge, but I'm scared of sharks.
14:01I think even the concept of there's a shark, if you stay out at it on the beach, everyone would get out of the water.
14:07Sharks have bad PR, but I'm here to discover what the other way of looking at it is.
14:14And if that can work, then I'll be really happy.
14:16If it doesn't, I'm boogered.
14:18Hey!
14:19Oh, my God!
14:20Oh, my God!
14:21Oh, my God!
14:22Oh, wow!
14:23I didn't see him!
14:24I didn't see him!
14:25I didn't see him!
14:26Oh, my God!
14:27I think some pee came out.
14:28There's only a couple of them.
14:29Whoa!
14:30Oh, my God!
14:31Six, seven, eight, nine.
14:32Eight, nine.
14:33And there's one hiding under the thing there.
14:34Ten.
14:35This is insane!
14:36I feel really nervous.
14:37They look enormous.
14:38They look so big, and the fins are just so massive as well.
14:47It's okay to have healthy fear.
14:52We understand these are big animals.
14:54But I'm telling you, it's going to be an incredible experience.
14:56We'll get a close-up look, and you'll get to be eye to eye with these.
14:59Wow.
15:00Wow.
15:01I feel sick.
15:04My palms are sweaty.
15:05I feel like I'm at the edge of a cliff, and I'm about to jump off.
15:09If any of you do not want to go in, this is the time to speak up.
15:17The Bahamas, an archipelago of around 700 islands, 4,000 miles away from home.
15:38Sitting at the most westerly point is Bimini.
15:43A sanctuary to a predator that has roamed its waters for longer than trees have grown on earth.
15:49But whose numbers are globally in rapid decline.
15:53Today we're going to get the recruits in a cage so they can get up close and personal with bull sharks.
16:03The ultimate goal from this is to get them out into the open ocean with a shark in the wild.
16:09Over a dozen adult sharks await the celebrities, each weighing up to a quarter of a tongue.
16:16With 300 razor shark teeth, this is the only time they'll have the protection of a shark cage.
16:27There are some precautions.
16:28There are some do's and some don'ts.
16:30Do.
16:31Keep all of your limbs, your fingers, your toes, your arms, your legs, especially your head, inside the cage.
16:37Keep your head inside the cage.
16:40Inside the cage.
16:41Anything you put outside the cage, the sharks might identify as food and assist you in removing them.
16:46And no one wants that.
16:48Don't.
16:49Panic.
16:50Remain calm.
16:51All you have to do is breathe and observe, admire, check them out, enjoy yourselves.
16:56We don't want you hurting yourself on the metal parts of the cage.
16:59The good news is inside of the cage there is a horizontal bar that you'll be able to grab the whole time and hold on to.
17:05All right, so if you want to hold on to something, hold on to that. Only that.
17:09So you've got some moral support.
17:11You will be diving in pairs.
17:13So the first is Lucy.
17:19And Lucy, it's your job to look after Sir Lenny.
17:23Oh, that's nice.
17:25If you guys want to come down and join me, I'm going to pop you in the water.
17:28Good luck.
17:29This way, yeah.
17:30Good luck.
17:31I think there are 70 shark attacks a year, but only five to six deaths.
17:40So at least a few of us will go home at the very worst.
17:46We're not climbing down the ladder.
17:47We're not climbing down the ladder.
17:48We're not climbing down the ladder.
17:49So I'm flocking in and there's no way that I could do something crazy and an arm is going to go out of the hole.
17:55There's a lot of big-ass sharks down here, man.
18:00I can't believe this is our first experience of sharks.
18:02We're going to see the biggest, scariest ones right up close today.
18:07I genuinely thought we'd only meet sharks once in this experience.
18:11Once?
18:12Yeah.
18:13In my head, I was like, so we'll just do the swimming for a couple of weeks and then the last day, we'll meet some sharks.
18:23Hello, Lucy.
18:24What am I most scared of?
18:26Well, I'm scared of a shark attack, obviously.
18:31You know, I don't know how I'm going to be.
18:33I don't know if I'll start crying or will I have a panic attack?
18:35I don't know.
18:37I'm scared now.
18:40Go on, Lucy.
18:41You know, it's okay.
18:42If I'm like, I'm feeling a bit scared.
18:43That's, it's not going to like mess up everything.
18:45That's okay.
18:46Everything's okay.
18:49Okay.
18:50She's going in.
19:00Oh my God.
19:03Oh my God.
19:06Oh my God.
19:07Oh my God.
19:08What's the bit I'm allowed to hold?
19:10Oh, this bit.
19:11Oh shit.
19:12Oh my goodness.
19:14Oh, this is incredible.
19:16How's she gone in there?
19:17Like it was nothing.
19:21Oh, this is incredible.
19:23There are so many.
19:24I'm so ready.
19:28I'm a bit scared of going in the ocean.
19:30I'm a bit scared of wild animals.
19:33I like the idea of having a little bit more bravery.
19:36And yes, we're on the telly.
19:38Yes, we're all celebrities.
19:40But it's different this.
19:50Wow.
19:53Oh my God.
19:54Look at that one.
19:55Bloody hell.
19:57That one's huge.
19:59Insight.
20:01Oh my God.
20:03Look at that one.
20:04Oh my God.
20:05Oh my God.
20:06Oh my God.
20:07Oh my God.
20:11Oh wow.
20:12One just hit the cage.
20:13That right there is intimidating.
20:14Because the whole cage is shaking like this.
20:15Yeah.
20:18This is so real.
20:19Very real.
20:20It's about the realest thing I've ever seen.
20:23Like on Kanto and Luisa.
20:27Oh my goodness.
20:31Yeah, Lenny.
20:37Wow.
20:38Holy shit.
20:40Luisa, you're a legend.
20:42Off you go.
20:44Oh my God.
20:45They look even bigger from here.
20:47You know, when I hear ball shark, I think aggressive.
20:50I think teeth.
20:51I think jumping out of the water.
20:53I never in a million years realised that you could actually go in the water with them.
20:57What I'm doing, I just, I can't do anything like half measures, you know.
21:11Some people will be like going, should we, how close to the shark should we get?
21:16And the back of my head will be going, do we get to ride them?
21:18Do we get to ride them?
21:23Oh, yeah.
21:25Wow.
21:26There's so much bigger than having up here.
21:27Scott, there's just everywhere up there.
21:30Wow.
21:31Did it heal up?
21:32I just feel the power of them just going down.
21:35Wow.
21:37The others seem to be excited about this experience and I feel like such a Debbie Downer
21:42because I'm just sat there not excited at all and just in sheer panic mode.
21:47Good luck, good luck, good luck. Enjoy.
21:49I was thinking all the way over here, like, am I scared?
21:53It's kind of the same as playing a really big show that you're scared of doing.
21:57Happy.
21:58But at a McCly show, the audience don't have humongous razor sharp teeth.
22:10This is insane!
22:13A non-disabled person putting on a wetsuit is tough.
22:18For me, it's like eating magic mushrooms and playing the game of Twister.
22:22I'm getting forward now.
22:23The toughest thing is shifting my body to get on the edge and then to drop in.
22:30Because I'm not using my legs.
22:32It's all core and arms and shoulders.
22:37But there's also sharks.
22:40It's nuts.
22:48Look, look, look.
22:49See that one?
22:50Magnificent.
22:53Oh, look at that one, look at that one!
23:00They're smashing into the cage!
23:02This is nuts.
23:03That is insane!
23:07With six of the team completing the cage dive,
23:10we've decided Helen should dive with Danny.
23:14People feel fear when they don't understand something
23:17and sharks are definitely a perfect example of that.
23:20But the challenge is, how do we overcome that fear?
23:23It's just through knowledge and experience and exposure.
23:26They're going to be exposed to sharks in a real way.
23:29And I'm hoping that every single one of them will transform that fear into curiosity.
23:34I think one of the main issues as I'm going through this process and this journey is that I hadn't realized how acute my fear of water was and my fear of putting my head under the water.
23:45So, to think that I'm going to have to do that and then look at sharks is actually I just scared myself.
23:56That's really terrifying.
23:58That's really terrifying and I don't know how I'm going to react.
24:00In the Bahamas, the shark capital of the world, the team have all successfully completed their cage dive with bull sharks.
24:10All except Helen, who is last to go in.
24:11What are the thoughts that are going through your mind?
24:12You're going to die.
24:13Okay, well I want to reassure you that that's not the case.
24:14Okay, thank you.
24:15We're about a minute away.
24:16Okay.
24:17We're about a minute away.
24:18Okay.
24:19I remember what I was saying earlier.
24:20It's really about breathing.
24:21Because that's how you calm your heart rate.
24:22That's how you calm your entire nervous system.
24:23Breathe in for four.
24:24Ready?
24:25One.
24:26One.
24:27One.
24:28One.
24:29One.
24:30One.
24:31One.
24:32One.
24:33One.
24:34One.
24:35One.
24:36One.
24:37One.
24:38One.
24:39One.
24:40One.
24:41One.
24:42One.
24:43One.
24:44One.
24:45One.
24:46One.
24:47One.
24:48One.
24:49One.
24:50Four.
24:51And then breathe out.
24:52I don't like seawater in my mouth, in my ears, in my eyes.
24:59All of this is problematic right now.
25:02All right.
25:03Helen, I'm going to be waiting for you down there.
25:05Okay?
25:06I got this.
25:07Iì›….
25:08Hi!
25:09born.
25:10Theiałeen is gorgeous.
25:15This is the first time Helen has been in the sea in 20 years.
25:19The water's a bit murky, but we can still see our bull sharks.
25:25Yeah, it's not going to come off, is it?
25:27What if the water comes in here, I press here and go like that
25:34So I just jump
25:57Oh my god, my seats are going out. Why is my seat going out?
26:00Alright Helen, can you hear me?
26:01My seats are going out
26:04Just go ahead and take a look Helen
26:06Look at all these beautiful bull sharks around us, you're doing amazing
26:10Oh gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh
26:15That's so big, that's so big
26:18Helen, right now we are surrounded 360 degrees by sharks
26:23This one right here is massive
26:29Oh, what's that?
26:32Keep on holding on to the bar
26:33I want to come out, I want to come out, please
26:37How do we get up? How do we get up?
26:39Can you show me? Can someone show me?
26:41Okay, I'm going to be right back
26:42Can you show me how to get out?
26:44Can you show me?
26:45Okay, I'm going to go up here
26:46It's okay to climb?
26:47Yeah, you got a hand up here
26:49Right here
26:50Okay
26:51Oh my feet
26:51I got you, yeah
26:52You can let go of the bar
26:53Oh my feet
26:54Oh my feet
26:54Come over here
26:55Come over here
26:56Look how big of them
26:57Show me, show me
26:59Yeah, alright
27:04Thank you
27:05Yay
27:06A hand, I need a hand
27:08Thank you, thank you, thank you
27:21Thank you, thank you
27:21Oh my god
27:25Hold on
27:30I'm so sorry I could get up
27:33I was so panicking
27:34I was like I can't put my feet together because they'll eat my toes
27:37I'm so sorry
27:37It's okay
27:38I was so scared about coming out
27:39It's all right
27:40It's all right
27:41It's all right
27:42You did it
27:43You did it
27:44Oh my god
27:45I'm so sorry
27:45I was like you go
27:46You go
27:47I can't go
27:48I totally understand
27:49I'm sorry
27:50And I couldn't hear
27:50I don't
27:51It's okay
27:52You know how brilliant you did
27:53You did that
27:54Oh my god
28:04She did amazing to get in
28:05She did
28:06She overcame a huge fear
28:07Actually a phobia
28:08She managed to get her head underwater
28:10Because that's her biggest fear
28:11And then on top of that
28:12In the water with sharks
28:13Yeah so
28:14We're off to a good start
28:15Yeah
28:16We got all seven in the water
28:17Exactly
28:17With bull sharks
28:18Found up the only
28:19Let's go
28:19Let's bring it in
28:20Good job everyone
28:21Good job
28:21Good job
28:21Good job
28:22Yes
28:23Hi
28:24I'm Helen
28:25You all right?
28:26Good, how are you guys?
28:27I just dove straight in there
28:29Tell me your reactions
28:42What were your feelings
28:43The minute you got in there?
28:44Get me out
28:45Yeah, no, I was really scared
28:48And it took me a moment
28:49Just to even think
28:50Is it okay to put my feet down?
28:52Are they going to be coming
28:53From the bottom as well?
28:54Where do we put our feet?
28:55Wow
28:56And I was suddenly like
28:57I've got feet
28:58Bitey
28:59I can't
29:00I can't
29:01Because your feet are sticking out
29:02Beyond the ladder
29:03I couldn't get out
29:04That's what I thought
29:05Had a complete panic attack
29:06And also did anybody think
29:07Well this is fine
29:08They're amazing
29:09And they're powerful
29:10And we're in a cage
29:11But the next step
29:12Might be us without the cage
29:13It's not mine
29:14But I don't know
29:15It's not mine
29:16But it's not going to
29:17When you say the next step
29:18I don't think they're going to put us
29:19In the cage
29:20And the bottom will drop out
29:21Can we just drink her toast?
29:23Yeah
29:24To Helen
29:25To Helen
29:26Do you think we're going to stand in sharks today?
29:27I think it's going to be gentle
29:28Do you?
29:29Well because we're in shorts
29:30It's going to be sharks involved
29:31Stop trying to kid yourselves and make this easy
29:44Deal with it
29:45Deal with it
29:46It's sharks
29:47And they keep saying you'll be fine with the sharks as long as you don't panic
29:49But what if you do panic?
29:50Then that's it
29:51Then you're eating
29:52Then that's it
29:53Then you're eating
29:54The next stage of the celebrity's journey to diving with sharks in open water is an encounter with a creature further down the food chain that inhabits a deserted island south of Bimini
30:07You can see an island or a little beach
30:08A little beach
30:09A little beach
30:10A little beach
30:11There's people in the sea so it must be safe
30:13What's that?
30:14What's up?
30:15What's up?
30:16I feel like I see fins
30:17What?
30:18What do you mean?
30:20What do you mean?
30:21Oh Whoa
30:22Oh my god
30:36Oh there's no way we're doing that is it
30:37Oh, my God.
30:38How's that Ray's? Are they Ray's?
30:40He's playing with them.
30:41There's no way we're doing that, is it?
30:43Are Ray's dangerous?
30:45They can be.
30:46Are you scared of Ray's? Are Ray's, like, a thing to be scared of?
30:50Can they kill you?
30:51I'm just talking about Steve Irwin at all.
30:53Wait, hang on. Didn't Steve Irwin die of a Ray sting?
30:58Come on down.
31:02Come on.
31:03Welcome, everybody, to Honeymoon Harbour
31:08to encounter some of the biggest stingrays in Bimini.
31:11Right here.
31:12They're beautiful animals.
31:14In fact, they're the cousins of sharks.
31:16And the point is, we want you to get comfortable
31:18with being with marine animals in the water.
31:20With them even touching your skin, rubbing up against you,
31:23you're going to get a chance to really get up close and personal
31:26with these stingrays.
31:27I don't think this is baby steps.
31:29If you're telling me stingrays are baby steps,
31:31you know, what are you going to bring next? A giant squid?
31:33Are you having a laugh?
31:35These guys are a bit different, obviously.
31:37They look like flat sharks, but their bodies are so cool.
31:40Their gills are underneath their body as well as their mouth.
31:43And on the top, they have these cool things called spiracles,
31:46which allow them to pump water over their gills to breathe.
31:49Haven't they got stingers on them, though?
31:51They have barbs, yeah.
31:52So there are these specialized pieces of hard scales
31:55that are at the back of their tail,
31:56and they just use it for defense.
31:58Like their idea of being attacked, what does that look like?
32:01Okay, it's being stepped on.
32:03So when you're getting in the water,
32:04all you have to do is a stingray shuffle,
32:06where you shuffle your feet along the sand,
32:08like you're skating, okay?
32:10And they'll hear you coming and they'll swim away.
32:12Now, some of you might know about that story of the Australian presenter
32:15that many of us loved, Steve Irwin,
32:17who tragically lost his life to a stingray encounter
32:21that did not go well.
32:22That was a freak accident that happened.
32:24This is not a common encounter that people have with stingrays.
32:27They're very peaceful.
32:28So the point is for you to just stay as peaceful as them,
32:31and they're just coming to check you out.
32:34Nathan is one of the dive experts.
32:36He's been coming here for over 20 years
32:38and knows the stingrays individually.
32:41Hey, guys!
32:42Hey!
32:43Once you guys get comfortable with the stingrays in the water,
32:46I'm going to hand each of you guys a piece of squid,
32:48or calamari, if you want to say.
32:51You're going to ball up your hand, tuck it in your fingers,
32:54and going to have a kind of like hanging out.
32:56Like tucking your fingers, why?
32:58Because these stingrays who have a plate in their mouth,
33:00they use to crunch up their food.
33:02So they really can, like, maybe pinch your skin
33:05if you guys get your finger in their mouth.
33:07Everybody got that?
33:08What about me, Nathan?
33:10Because I'm not always going to be able to stand up in there.
33:12Will I be able to hang out with them?
33:16We have a box for you to sit on.
33:17Oh, you got a box?
33:18You got your own privacy.
33:19You got a throne?
33:20Throne, right there.
33:21You knew I was coming.
33:22In the ocean, yes.
33:23Nice.
33:24Nice.
33:29It looks like we're going to be going in with the stingrays.
33:31Friendly little characters.
33:32Apparently they like to rub up against you.
33:34So I don't know where the line is.
33:37Like, it's fine for them to rub up against you.
33:40But then if you rub back, that could be a problem.
33:43The C2 movement, that's what they call it.
33:46It's going to be lovely feeding them.
33:49Just got to remember to keep our fingers tight.
33:52And also because Rachel has spotted little sharks about.
33:56And my vision is appalling.
33:58I'm half blind.
33:59So I can't see them.
34:01But apparently they're lurking.
34:03But I think they're little.
34:04So that's okay.
34:06Oh, they're little sharks.
34:08You see?
34:09Yes!
34:10Yes!
34:11Get the shark!
34:12I've now just had my first sighting in shallow water of a little shark.
34:19It's come very, very close to the shoreline.
34:22And it's swimming amongst the stingrays.
34:25Let's go.
34:26Stingray shuffle, everybody.
34:27Stingray shuffle.
34:28Ready?
34:29Ready. Let's go.
34:32Danny was talking about doing the stingray shuffle.
34:35And that's something that I can't do as easy.
34:37So I'm a little bit worried whether I'm going to annoy them
34:40or if they come towards me, how I'm going to get away.
34:45War is scary for me.
34:46This is way out of my comfort zone.
34:49And you're talking about someone who spends most of his life
34:52out of his comfort zone.
34:53All right.
34:54So go ahead and turn around now.
34:56Keep coming in a little deeper.
35:01They love you.
35:02They love you, Addy.
35:03They love you, Addy.
35:04That's good.
35:05Okay.
35:06Nathan's going to hand everybody a piece of squid like this.
35:08Just slowly put your hand in the water and wait for the stingray
35:10to come in again.
35:11We're going to watch me.
35:13It's all good.
35:14It's all good.
35:15You're all good.
35:16Oh, my God.
35:17It's coming right from my vagina.
35:18I'm so much more left.
35:19Oh, my God.
35:20Oh, my God.
35:21I'm so much more of you.
35:23Oh, my God.
35:24Oh, my God.
35:25Rachel, run.
35:27Go on, Rachel.
35:28Here comes one.
35:29Here we go.
35:30I just feel like I'm...
35:34Yeah.
35:35Right, here we go.
35:37It's not me.
35:38It's not me.
35:39I've got nothing.
35:40It's near my vagina.
35:41Okay, where's the tiniest baby?
35:43Oh, it's a little one now.
35:45I think it looks like a pet load already.
35:47I want a baby one.
35:49Oh, no, not you!
35:51He's got to go for it.
35:53He's got to go for it.
35:55Oh, Sucky Sucky!
36:01Sucky Sucky!
36:03They gave me a tickle.
36:07I've never been tickled by a stingwave before.
36:09It was quite pleasant.
36:27If there was a massive shark,
36:29who's first out, who's last out?
36:31Helen's first out, isn't she?
36:33Asking for a friend.
36:35That's the danger bit, though, isn't it?
36:37If you're going up and you're on the surface.
36:39Are you supposed to punch them on the nose?
36:41Something about punching them on the nose.
36:43I heard that. Redirection.
36:45On the eastern shore of North Bimini are mangroves,
36:51a breeding ground for much of the island's marine life.
36:55The team have to learn to stay calm when facing sharks.
36:59So to build their confidence,
37:01I want them to get close to juvenile lemon sharks
37:03without the safety of a cage.
37:07We've got one, two, three, four, five, six,
37:09seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.
37:11A couple of big ones.
37:13We've set this bait box up in the middle of the channel.
37:23We have fish pieces in this box,
37:25and this is putting out a scent trail.
37:27And these sharks are then following that trail
37:29right up to the box.
37:31Back off, bro.
37:33We've got to allow our scientists to study the lemon sharks
37:35so we can place our tags
37:37to find out where they go
37:39and what habitats they use.
37:41Helping us to know how to protect them
37:43as their numbers are decreasing.
37:45OK, so we're going to go into the mangroves
37:49and we're going to go and have an experience
37:51with these lemon sharks.
37:53You're going to get up close to them.
37:55They're going to be circling in and out of your legs,
37:57very close. They might bump you.
37:59Hopefully not. They will bump you, though.
38:01It's OK if something kind of bumps you want,
38:04but if you feel something pushing into you,
38:06then you do need to move out of the way.
38:08But just don't, like, jump out of the way like this,
38:10because then you'll attract more of them in.
38:12You know, rules of engagement in the shallows.
38:14Please do not try and touch the sharks.
38:16If you do, they might turn around and bite out.
38:20Don't splash.
38:21These animals are kind of cued into splashes,
38:23so don't splash.
38:24No jerky movements.
38:25You know, they have pretty big teeth for a little shark.
38:28They're not serrated,
38:30but they're extremely sharp like a scalpel.
38:32So we're keeping our hands out of the water.
38:35If I was you guys, I would kind of stand like this.
38:37There's a lot of sharks
38:39and I don't want to have ten people to deal with,
38:41so we're going to split up
38:43and make it a safe experience for everyone.
38:48Lucy, Dougie and Helen are the first team
38:50on their way to the shallows.
38:52You can see a couple.
38:55Oh, yeah, you can see the fins, look.
38:57I think we're ready.
38:58Oh, my God.
38:59The sharks look ready.
39:04It's very odd seeing all these little fins
39:07dancing around the surface of the water
39:10and thinking that in moments
39:12we're going to be dancing around with them.
39:20I'm feeling okay.
39:21I trust Tristan, so that's a good thing.
39:24And I think we just have...
39:26I'm just a bit worried that I'll stop screaming or something.
39:28I'm worried that I'll panic.
39:30So I'm just going to try and take some deep breaths
39:32before I go in and hope that we don't get bitten.
39:36Look at that fish.
39:38Look, he's got a big fish.
39:39Oh, gosh.
39:40They're not going to come out.
39:41I don't want their mouths coming out of the water.
39:43He's making sure their bellies are full.
39:47I'm feeling okay.
39:48This is Tristan's favourite thing to do
39:51and he doesn't seem insane.
39:53Dougie, you ready?
39:54Yes, sir.
39:57I've just got that in my head.
39:58He loves this.
39:59I don't know how to do this and look cool with my hands.
40:03He's already forgotten to keep your hands in me.
40:06He looks like a whole stick.
40:11Hands folded.
40:12Arms folded.
40:14Like this?
40:15There's just a few.
40:16Is that sarcasm?
40:18As soon as we get there, just hunker down and stay still.
40:21Arms out.
40:22Don't hunker down.
40:23Don't stay...
40:24Don't sit with the sharks.
40:25Hunker up.
40:26Hunker up.
40:28You can stand right here.
40:29Oh, my God.
40:34Wow.
40:36You come here.
40:38There's bait in here.
40:39The current's going this way
40:40and that's why these sharks are coming up.
40:42Are my testicles safe?
40:44Well, mine are more unsafe than yours.
40:46You're right.
40:47Because I'm a bit deeper than you.
40:48Who's going next?
40:50Yeah, we're ready.
40:51Lucy?
40:54Getting a bit bumpy.
40:55It's proper, like, pack.
40:56Oh, my goodness.
40:57Oh, my goodness.
40:58So, we've probably got around 14.
41:00No way.
41:01At the moment, I haven't kind of amped them up.
41:04Oh, oh!
41:05Calm down.
41:06Oh, my goodness.
41:07Calm down.
41:08Can I just get...
41:09Can I get my balls off out of the water?
41:12Do you mind if I come up on the sand bank a bit?
41:14Yeah.
41:16That's better.
41:17There's none around, right?
41:18No, they're all over here.
41:20No more food for you.
41:24What's that?
41:25The cuda.
41:26The barracuda, yeah.
41:27That's a barracuda.
41:28Barracuda.
41:29Yeah, it's a big barracuda.
41:30Can we get out of the water now?
41:32Now, should we be more worried about the barracuda?
41:35I don't trust them.
41:36They're just untrustworthy.
41:41Those cudas will actually eat small lemon sharks.
41:43I don't think it will mess with these guys,
41:45but they're a big predator in this system.
41:47That's a big one as well.
41:49Can we get rid of that barracuda?
41:51He's pretty close, right?
41:52Yeah, he won't do anything.
41:53Trust me.
41:54He won't.
41:55He's getting really close to us, Tristan.
41:56You're all right.
41:57You're all right.
41:58You're all right.
41:59Tristan?
42:00Yeah, you're good.
42:01You're good.
42:02You're good.
42:03He's gone off down the back.
42:04It's fine.
42:05You're just surrounded by sharks now.
42:11Now the barracuda has gone, it's okay to bring in the second team.
42:14Oh, my days.
42:15Look at it.
42:16Look at the fin.
42:17It's a massive shark.
42:19This is nuts.
42:20There's a lot of them.
42:21Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd be doing something like this.
42:26Like, standing in shallow water surrounded by lemon sharks.
42:31You know, whenever you see sharks on the telly, they're always in the attack.
42:36They're the opposite of that.
42:37They're just really peaceful, you know?
42:39However, on the flip side of that...
42:41They will have your finger up.
42:44Yeah, of all the sharks I've ever worked with,
42:46it's the only one I've ever been bit by.
42:48What?
42:50I do love the fact that, like, we're all standing here,
42:52and they're so graceful, they just lull you into that false sense of security,
42:56and then as soon as there's, like, a fish or something, then they go,
42:59like that.
43:00What's happening?
43:01Oh, my gosh!
43:02That shark just jumped out!
43:03Oh, my God!
43:04Oh, my God!
43:05Did it breach?
43:06Oh, my God!
43:07Did you see that?
43:08Almost out of the water.
43:09It did come out of the water.
43:10Yeah, it came out of the water with a fish in its mouth.
43:13A larger shark has picked up the scent and has come into the shallows.
43:18Where has it gone?
43:19Is it coming in?
43:20It does look like a shark.
43:21They're all, they're everywhere.
43:22They just bashed my legs with their toes.
43:24Whoa!
43:25They're fairly simple inside.
43:26Oh, there's the bigger one.
43:27That bigger one just freaked them all out.
43:29Yeah, I mean, they are starting to get a little bit more excited now.
43:32Yeah.
43:33As we said, with most sharks, they dusk and dawn,
43:35that's when they start to move on the hunt.
43:37It's just because the sediment is moving around,
43:40like, the visibility, so if they bump into something...
43:43Right.
43:44They start biting.
43:45Yeah, they're trying to figure out what it is,
43:46so let's all move away.
43:47Shall we start to move back?
43:49They're, like, they're just...
43:50Oh, Jesus!
43:51There's way more...
43:52What, what, what?
43:53You all right, Ross?
43:54I care.
43:55What happened?
43:56What happened?
43:57A shark just bit me.
43:59In the poor visibility, the shark bumps into Ross's leg,
44:02and because he didn't move, the shark goes in for an exploratory bite.
44:08They are getting a bit grumpy,
44:10so we're going to slowly move back towards the boat.
44:12As the tide begins to change,
44:17there's no current going away from the bait box,
44:21so the sharks kind of have nowhere to direct themselves
44:24because that scent trail is not moving,
44:26it's just kind of, like, lingering.
44:28So the sharks can get a bit disoriented,
44:30and then they start bumping into things.
44:32The visibility lowers, and that's exactly what happened.
44:35Is this slow enough, Tristan?
44:36That's perfect, yeah.
44:38A bigger one came, and then, um, tasted Ross.
44:42What? Investigated his foot.
44:44His foot?
44:45Yeah, they don't have hands or anything to investigate,
44:47so their way of investigating is, like...
44:49It's like a dog sniffing.
44:50Ross, did it hurt?
44:51Look, we'll deal with the bravery medal at a later stage.
44:55Let me get back on the boat, I'll sign the book deal,
44:58and I'll tell you all about it.
45:01Is your foot still there?
45:02Yeah, barely. It's hanging on.
45:04Oh, my days.
45:05It's hanging on.
45:06Can you see the bite?
45:07Is there any puncture holes?
45:09Nah.
45:10It's like a little kitten's foot at you.
45:11Where did it bite?
45:12It's more sort of down here.
45:17It's an experience.
45:18Oh, look, you know, look,
45:19when you've been through something like that once,
45:21you're just...
45:22You view life differently.
45:23I mean, I'm just...
45:24I'm looking to be alive.
45:25Every...
45:26Apart from you...
45:27Every day.
45:28Every moment now.
45:29Every moment from now on...
45:30Count is a blessing.
45:31It's a blessing.
45:32Extra.
45:33It's not going to end, is it?
45:34It's not going to end.
45:35Of course it's not going to end.
45:37The lemon shark that bumped Ross was a nice teaching moment for the rest of the group.
45:42For them to realize you can't be complacent around these sharks.
45:46That was just a small lemon shark.
45:48But we're going to be dealing with much, much larger predators.
45:51And if you get bit by one of them, this is what can happen.
45:54It's so easy when you get a little bit of confidence under your belt to become complacent.
46:07Oh, my God!
46:09Oh, my God!
46:10They need to prove to us that they're responsible enough and safe enough to do this on their own.
46:17You ready?
46:18Am I next?
46:19Yep.
46:20Oh, my God.
46:21There's a big one that just came in.
46:23I want to come out!
46:24I want to come out!
46:25Please!
46:26I want to come out!
46:27Next bit, designed to push you to your limits.
46:31Oh, my God!
46:33Oh, my God!
46:34Oh, my God!
46:35Oh, my God!
46:36Oh, my God!
46:37Oh, my God!
46:38Oh, my God!
46:39The end goal for you guys is to dive outside of a cage with Tiger Sharks.
46:50Wow.
47:09The end goal is to dive outside of a cage with Tiger Sharks.
