00:00So now we've got a really interesting 580 review. Jacob, congratulations, you're here.
00:08Thank you. Thank you. This guy's crazy. Anyway, some people are always smiling and happy and stuff,
00:15even when we're giving them a hard time. Where's this? Where's that? And Jacob's one of them.
00:19So 185, yeah, very interesting boat. Great colours. A fierce looking whale or shark there on the side.
00:28And home-built boat. How was it, building? It was tough. Tough, but it's a so valuable experience.
00:36Yeah. You know, in those races, usually there's the fault of the boat or something breaks.
00:41And having built the boat myself, it gives me so much confidence of how everything is done.
00:47And if anything happens, I'm sure I'm able to kind of fix it on the way.
00:52You know exactly what's keeping you afloat. That's a big part of what it is.
00:55And it's this combination thing, you know, you build your boat and then sail it around the world.
00:58That's pretty cool. I wouldn't do this again.
01:01Don't say that. You only have to do it once. Yeah, yeah. This is the first one.
01:05So that's the best one. Okay. So let's get into it.
01:09So you should explain a bit about it. You're Polish, but you're living in Ireland.
01:13Yes. And this makes this mix quite explosive.
01:17Yeah.
01:18So, you know, Irish people, they're always kind of funny, friendly, and crack, and Polish are the same.
01:23Yeah.
01:24So we both drink a lot.
01:27Otherwise you're dehydrated. That's okay.
01:29All right. I'm going to pinch the camera.
01:32And we'll talk about, just while we're here, we'll talk a little bit about the boat.
01:36Obviously, it's your individual expression of what's going on.
01:40Anything special you need to tell us or show us about the boat?
01:43Anything that you enjoyed doing?
01:44What was the best part about building the boat?
01:47Like the biggest memory?
01:49The best part, like for me, the boat is something that I feel really connected with.
01:53Yeah.
01:54So creating the shape of the boat.
01:58Creating the shape.
01:59Once I've put all the stringers on the frames, and then there was a time that I had to kind of plane and the sand,
02:06and then you can see how it's shaped.
02:10Yeah.
02:10So, and I'm quite sensitive for this.
02:13Yeah.
02:13So I was going and touching my boat quite often.
02:17Yeah.
02:17To feel all the kind of, how the waves will be doing.
02:20This is an amazing experience.
02:22This is something about a boat that you're creating something from nothing, from raw materials.
02:26It's like a work of art.
02:27Yes.
02:27It's like a sculptor.
02:28I like the shapes.
02:29Yeah.
02:30And I know exactly what you mean, because all of a sudden, it's got the shape of the boat,
02:33and you look back and say, cheapest, I really am building a boat.
02:35Yes.
02:35Yeah, yeah, it's quite cool.
02:36Okay.
02:37All right.
02:37So basically, even though we can customize certain things, everything about it is standard 580.
02:44You've got blue EVA foam on the deck.
02:47That's pretty cool.
02:48Yes.
02:48If you need EVA for the knees, because on such a boat, you're never on your feet.
02:52You're always on your crawling.
02:54Yeah.
02:55It makes a huge difference.
02:56And you've got to, that's a happy shark, isn't it?
02:58This is a happy shark.
02:59You see the funny story behind this is, like, I have a daughter.
03:03Yeah.
03:03At the time, she was, like, 17, and ready to choose which kind of a direction in life she's going to.
03:10Yeah.
03:10And she was quite orientated to go to study the business.
03:13Yeah.
03:14But once I started the project, and, you know, this is all about the project mainly, she changed, and she went to study the marine biology.
03:22Really?
03:23So she made me so happy.
03:24Holy dooly.
03:25And first thing she learned is that the dolphins are not such nice animals.
03:29Yeah.
03:29They're rootless killers.
03:30Absolutely.
03:30But the shark is something, some species that we have to look after.
03:34Yeah.
03:34So thanks to her, you know, for everything, for support, I decided to put a baby shark.
03:40Yeah, perfect.
03:41That's cool.
03:41Interesting story.
03:43Good on her for taking up marine biology.
03:44That's cool.
03:45So there's the happy shark.
03:47Okay.
03:47And in case you wondered, that's how you spell Jacob's name.
03:52It's a Polish name.
03:54I've got some good Polish friends, eh?
03:55They're always happy people.
03:56Okay.
03:57So we've got everything we need here, usual foredeck hatch, and this is a standard shearline mast.
04:02If you've seen the one we just did on Neil's boat, you'll see the difference on the way
04:08that the whole thing's set up.
04:09The weight's not such a critical thing as endurance and long distance.
04:12This part is made from the Halberg Rasi.
04:15From which?
04:16Halberg Rasi.
04:17Oh, yeah.
04:18Okay.
04:1840 feet Halberg Rasi step for the mast.
04:22Yep.
04:22So I decided to use it.
04:24Yep.
04:24That's cool.
04:25Jeez, you've got some serious clip-on points there.
04:27You've got quite a few, you know.
04:29Yeah.
04:30Saddles there.
04:31Already on your knees on the EVA foam.
04:33Yes.
04:33Jeepers, I'm feeling sorry for Kerry, but don't tell him.
04:36I know, I know.
04:38He's the dumb guy.
04:39Yeah, that's right.
04:40He's the dumb guy.
04:40We'll tell you the story of that later on when I do Kerry's story.
04:43But anyway, yeah, beautiful build.
04:45Like the observation pod, as much as I like bubbles, the obs pod we call it, it really fits
04:51for the boat, eh?
04:52It looks very slick.
04:53I was thinking...
04:54It does a lot of things.
04:55I was thinking what to choose, the bubble or dome.
04:57And from the one thing, I couldn't see myself having my head inside the bubble.
05:02Yeah.
05:03And with the kind of rocky boat, I might hit my chin or something.
05:07Yeah.
05:07So, plus, I think it looks sexier with the observation.
05:10I've got to say, it looks hot.
05:12Yeah.
05:12When we were doing this, there was a boat in Australia called a Hood 20.
05:15And I saw a Hood 20 with a little raised section like that probably 45 years ago.
05:21And I always thought it looked good.
05:22And when we were coming up with the concept of how we wanted things to look, I said, oh,
05:24we've got to have an obs pod.
05:25But I knew I'd get a bubble.
05:27Yeah.
05:27Anyway, that's cool.
05:29And you've got Blue Shark jammers there or clamp cleats and stuff?
05:32Yes.
05:33Yeah.
05:33I bought all the set recommended by the class.
05:37You've got the sliding track there.
05:38It's all pretty solid stuff.
05:39I was thinking, instead of spending the time thinking on my own solution, so once the set
05:45is chosen and made for the boat, so I just went for it.
05:48Yeah.
05:48It all works.
05:50You know, it's all works.
05:51All very good.
05:52Yeah.
05:52Cockpit looks pretty sorted.
05:54Yeah.
05:54I missed that solid rail across the back, but it's nice and open there as you go.
05:58And you've got a...
06:00It's interesting.
06:01I've got...
06:01I had a similar thing here on Trekker with the hatch, but I didn't angle it back enough.
06:05You've got a lot more angle there.
06:07And the drop down, so that's pretty good.
06:08That works well.
06:09Completely flat.
06:10Yeah.
06:10So it's important to have this done, so it does not put the force on the hinges.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Yeah.
06:16Too true.
06:17Anyway, that's the thing about it.
06:18I say this often.
06:19It's a one design class, but there's certain things we allow a level of freedom.
06:23So you've got the big dodger coming back, but you haven't got the material on yet.
06:26That's another amazing story.
06:28You see the yacht next to the...
06:30With the twin fin kill.
06:32Yep.
06:33Yep.
06:33I met the guy.
06:34He's 82 years old.
06:3582.
06:3682.
06:37And he's a professional boat designer.
06:38Yep.
06:39And in the 1970s, he spent a couple of years working in Poland in a yacht shipyard.
06:46Yep.
06:46Yep.
06:46In actually my hometown.
06:48Yeah.
06:48And when he showed me the pictures, I could name the people on the pictures.
06:52Really?
06:52Oh, that's weird.
06:54He said, he said, it was a tough time in Poland that time, and I was given, you know, so much
06:58help from the Polish people, and I'd be happy to give this back.
07:03So he came to the solution.
07:04He designed the hood for me, and he's going to make it.
07:07Far out.
07:08Far out.
07:09So he did that while the boat was here, because you've had the boat here for a while, eh?
07:12Yeah.
07:12Yeah.
07:13Yeah.
07:13Oh, that's pretty cool.
07:14We just started three days ago.
07:15Yeah.
07:16Well, you won't, I've got to tell you, you won't regret that.
07:18So how far does that fall back?
07:19That hinges back, because it's just interesting to see what he's planning, but the dodger is
07:24more important than some of the sailors realize.
07:27Yes, actually, yeah.
07:28When I was sailing in the Biscay, like, I had no problem with the waves coming on my deck.
07:32Yeah.
07:33Because the boat is quite light.
07:34You're going to love this dodger.
07:35But when the rain comes.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Heavy rain.
07:37Absolutely.
07:37So you like to have a hatch open, and then this is going to be that much?
07:41You want to go back as far as you can, yeah.
07:43That much?
07:43So just to stop the rain.
07:44Even a bit more.
07:46You know, you'd be surprised.
07:47It comes in the side.
07:48But anyway, yeah, that's looking good.
07:49We were thinking about this passing, this point, so.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Well, good on him for that.
07:54You'll be dreaming of it.
07:56You'll be raving about it, you know, because I had a big one on Trekker, and it really worked
08:01well, and it saved me a few times from water coming down below.
08:04Anyway, that's cool.
08:05Okay, your solar panels.
08:07You've got a pivoting system and all the rest of it.
08:10You can take it all off if you want to, you know, so.
08:12Yeah, exactly.
08:12This is a very last-in-the-moment idea, and my friend who designed the electrical system
08:18for me, he said, you better get the proper solid solar panels, because they go break very
08:24easily.
08:24Yeah.
08:25Initially, they were.
08:26Just put it up.
08:27Can you prop it up easy?
08:29There you go.
08:30Okay.
08:31There's the system there.
08:33People are always interested in this stuff.
08:35I can put them like this.
08:36Yeah, yeah.
08:37To the starboard sign.
08:38Yeah.
08:38Some, I can film them this way, that way.
08:43Yep, yep.
08:43Fold them back, and then bring them up and hide them, so they're not standing off.
08:48Yeah, okay.
08:49That's cool.
08:50Yep.
08:51I'm pretty happy with this design, yeah.
08:52You've got a Iridium Go exec.
08:55Or is it Go?
08:56Yes.
08:56The antenna.
08:56That's Iridium Go.
08:58Iridium Go, yeah.
08:59The older version.
09:00Yep.
09:00That's cool.
09:02And you've got your dagger boards, and you've got a wind pilot.
09:06Ooh, that's a nice vein.
09:07I'm the lucky one.
09:10I'm the one of the lucky ones.
09:11Yeah, there's a bit of a standing joke going on here, but anyway, I don't know where to
09:14talk about the in-house joke.
09:15I'm going to cock my leg over there.
09:17I'm on.
09:19We're in.
09:20Yep, perfect.
09:21Okay.
09:22Yeah, so wind pilot.
09:24Quite a good vein.
09:24Hell of a lot of them around, but anyway.
09:26So, you're happy with that?
09:28I'm very happy.
09:28So, it took me, obviously, a while to learn how to operate this.
09:32I downloaded the full instruction from the manufacturer.
09:35So, how far have you sailed with it so far?
09:37From Ireland to Galicia.
09:38Oh, you know how to do it now.
09:39It's about 700 miles solo voyage.
09:42Yeah.
09:43So, you must be happy with it now.
09:44You know what's going on.
09:45Yeah, absolutely.
09:46Good system.
09:47So, even though you did buy it on the hot market.
09:52That's cool.
09:54Plus, I have another wind-based system, which I built myself.
09:58Yeah.
09:58It's the one that Janusz has done.
10:01Okay.
10:02And designed.
10:02So, this is the fitting.
10:03I wonder what that was.
10:04I was looking at it and said, what the bloody hell is that?
10:06So...
10:06Yeah, I know the system.
10:07So, it's just a pure wind-activated.
10:09Yeah.
10:09Yeah.
10:10It's like a circle.
10:11Yeah.
10:11With a big wing.
10:12Yeah, yeah.
10:13And that, obviously, is not as strong as with the Servo Pendulum one.
10:17Yeah.
10:17But, in an emergency situation, so, if this one goes broken, I can try to put this in.
10:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:24Yeah.
10:24Plus, I have built another rudder.
10:28Yeah.
10:28So, if this rudder goes breaks, I can just pull the new one, assemble together, and fit
10:34into the hinges that I have.
10:36Yeah.
10:36Oh, you just wasted your time there.
10:37That rudder is indestructible.
10:39I know.
10:40It is very solid.
10:41Janusz will be saying, that'll never break.
10:41Did you tell Janusz you got an emergency rudder?
10:43I've got to say, the designer of these boats, Janusz Maderski, is a really cool guy.
10:50It was great work, from our perspective, working with him on the boats, because this
10:53is a development of a, I should be, I'm going to tell a story here, seeing we're on a Polish
10:58boat.
10:59The development of the 580, oh, Jane's got it.
11:03Okay.
11:03But, now I've got to move over here.
11:04This is what you get when you do things like this.
11:07Janusz had designed a boat called a Sekka A, which is a four-meter, five-meter boat.
11:13Yeah.
11:13And so, that's one of the reasons I went to him, because I spoke with three designers.
11:17And this is a development of the five-meter boat.
11:20So, it's not just tack on another 0.8.
11:24It's a whole new stuff.
11:26But, anyway, it was great working with him.
11:27And he's Polish, so there's the connection between...
11:30And he's from my hometown.
11:31From your hometown?
11:32Yes.
11:32Okay.
11:32So, that's impossible.
11:33You had no choice, because you couldn't upset Janusz on anything you did.
11:36I know, anyway.
11:38And so, it's been fantastic.
11:40And we've had a great relationship.
11:41And I think he's as excited about the 580 as what we are.
11:45He is.
11:45And everything that we're doing.
11:47This is an upmarket, upbudget situation, because a lot of Janusz's designs, and you should check it out on the website, you know, he's got some great designs.
11:55And you can build a boat like this for normal sailing at a fraction of the cost.
11:59You know, like, it's a really...
12:00I think, I'm not sure what...
12:01What do you reckon a Setka A budget is to go across the Atlantic?
12:05Setka means this is the combination of the word from Sto, which is the 100.
12:10Yeah.
12:10That means 100 grand.
12:12Yeah.
12:12In Polish lote, which be dividing by 4.3, which makes it's about 25,000 euros.
12:18Yeah, 25,000 euros, yeah.
12:20So, you're probably less than half the money of one of these, yeah.
12:24And in the early days, when they started doing it, I mean, some of the boats were costing like 4 grand or something.
12:284 or 5 grand.
12:29So, anyway, but that's another story.
12:30So, we've upgraded a few things on this, because it's a slightly different thing, but I'm happy to have Janusz on board and all that sort of stuff.
12:38So, that's all cool, bit of a back story.
12:40Okay, so, everything else, you've got your mandatory boarding ladder there, you've got your knife on your tiller, nice tiller.
12:47You must have enjoyed laminating that.
12:49Yeah.
12:51And you've got this backboard here, that's perfect.
12:54I was thinking how to distribute the weight of the boat more to the stern.
12:59Yeah.
12:59So, and putting the water in here was one of the simplest solution.
13:06Yeah.
13:07It's like that.
13:07That's cool.
13:08Plus, I'm going to put some ropes and then, plus the rope in here.
13:11Yeah, yeah.
13:12To have them really, really tight.
13:13Yeah, exactly.
13:14I did the same thing.
13:15I had, instead of a plank, I had a stormboard sort of thing.
13:17Put a stormboard in, I could put buckets in there and water.
13:19Because I actually stored, in the beginning, I could tell the boat was not performing properly.
13:24It was too much weight in the bow.
13:25This is my drone.
13:26So, yeah, drone, bits and pieces.
13:28Yep.
13:29That's cool.
13:30You've got your Echo Max there on a flexible pole, your radar detector, transponder.
13:36And you've got your life things.
13:39Have you done your safety yet?
13:40Do it.
13:41Do you do your safety check?
13:42Safety check now.
13:42Monday.
13:43Monday.
13:44Yeah.
13:44Right, fine.
13:45All right.
13:45And you've got your mandatory clogs there.
13:48Yeah, that's fine.
13:50So, all right.
13:51We can head down below, I think.
13:52How many vents you got?
13:53You got two.
13:54You got that one and the sea one.
13:57Yes.
13:57With the cow.
13:59All right.
13:59That's cool.
14:00All right.
14:00You jump down below and I'll follow you through.
14:02I thought you just hold this grub.
14:03Yeah, yeah.
14:04No, that's perfect.
14:05Go down.
14:06That's perfect.
14:06You might sit, resettle your hands and then descend down.
14:10Yep, yep, yep.
14:12Okay.
14:13I'm going to go there.
14:15I'm going to go there.
14:16Every boat's got slightly different.
14:18Oh, that's pretty good, eh?
14:19Yeah.
14:19Similar to tracker.
14:21That's pretty good.
14:21I'm quite fit guy, so I wasn't very fussy about the entrance.
14:25Yeah, that's all right.
14:26So here's the OBS pipe.
14:27It's pretty cool because it gives you, actually, I can just stand up with the bubble, but it's quite nice.
14:34Jane would love this.
14:35You know, she's got full head ring there.
14:37The simple things that come in action, how to change your pants.
14:43Oh, yeah.
14:44Well, yeah.
14:44I know what you mean.
14:45You need both hands.
14:46You need to stay standard.
14:46Well, mine was, what's happening, Jane King?
14:49Can go to the...
14:50We can go wide?
14:50Yeah.
14:51Okay, try it.
14:52Oh, look at that.
14:52We got wide now.
14:53Oh, I forgot about that.
14:54We're in, yeah, okay.
14:56So, yeah, the OBS pod is good, and I forget what the headroom there is now, but Jane can easily stand up in there.
15:02So that's cool.
15:02Now, yours is very much like being in someone's home.
15:06It's fantastic, all right?
15:08Just a quick scan around here.
15:10Really cool.
15:11It's got a fantastic ambiance.
15:13John Guswell would be proud of you.
15:17It's interesting when you think about tracker, the original tracker with John Guswell, and then you look at these boats.
15:22His was really interesting, but these boats are so cool.
15:26You know, I really, I could, you know, I could live on this for a long time.
15:29Anyway, and you've got a library.
15:31Fantastic.
15:31I have tons of books.
15:33Tons of books.
15:34Tons of books.
15:35Yeah.
15:35You know, I have some books downloaded to my iPad.
15:39Yeah.
15:39Yeah.
15:40But still, sometimes you need to kind of fill some paper.
15:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:42Yeah, exactly.
15:43Half of them in the paper and half of them in the, in the, in the, in the, in the iPad.
15:47Yeah.
15:48So you must be feeling a little bit proud at the moment, you know, because not only are you here, you've got a cool boat, you know, and how, how, like, you look as if you've been living on board for ages.
15:55What's, how long have you been on board now?
15:56Um, quite long since, since I come, uh, since I came, uh, and the thing for me was even if it is very cold, I rather stay on the boat because, uh, as I said before, I have a like special connection with my boat.
16:08Yeah.
16:08And I wouldn't be happy sleeping somewhere in the apartment and having my boat here on, on her own.
16:13Yep.
16:14So I just, I get it.
16:15I totally get it.
16:16Love it.
16:17Yeah.
16:17I totally get it.
16:18You've got these poles as well.
16:19It's exactly what we had on tracker.
16:21Vertical pole is better than a handrail sometimes.
16:23Yeah.
16:23My, my thinking was, uh, because, uh, if I was put by the really like a couple of tons of wave coming down, like roof is the weakest point.
16:31Yeah.
16:31Yeah.
16:31So support the roof is one thing, but also if you do something, you can just jump yourself.
16:35Absolutely.
16:36Have two hands.
16:37Been there, done that.
16:38It's a really cool way of doing it.
16:39And, uh, it's never enough handles on the boat.
16:42Absolutely.
16:42Yeah.
16:42Yeah.
16:43So very much buttoned up.
16:44All right.
16:44I'm going to go around.
16:45So who did you, did you, you got someone to help you with the electrical?
16:49Yes.
16:49I, I'm useless regards to this.
16:51So I, I have a good friend of mine who is, who is a sailor.
16:54And so, uh, he designed all the system.
16:58He checked, you know, he was blowing the things up just to, you know, have a feeling.
17:03Yeah.
17:03So I have this done probably the best way.
17:07Yep.
17:07It looks perfect.
17:08And so it's a watertight box as well.
17:10So everything, all the connections are fully secured.
17:12If you can flush the water in.
17:14I have two separate systems actually.
17:17Uh, so each panel works inter, independently.
17:20Yeah.
17:20So I have those two MPPTs.
17:22Yes.
17:23Everyone is fused.
17:24Plus all of them are fused again.
17:26Yes.
17:26And if my battery goes, uh, bad.
17:30Yeah.
17:30If something happens, I can only just a switch.
17:33Yep.
17:33And I'm on the emergency battery.
17:35Yeah.
17:35Fantastic.
17:35All the way.
17:36Yeah.
17:36I don't have to go reconnecting.
17:38Yeah.
17:38Yeah.
17:39It's surprising the amount of work with the electrical.
17:40I had a, I had a Polish guy, but he, uh, Blaster, which was, uh, uh, Michal, um, on, uh, what's
17:51his boat, did in 21 and did the transat, you know, it was five of us went.
17:56And, uh, Michal's mate was, was Blaster.
17:58He's another Polish guy.
17:59What's his full name?
18:00He said Czech Republic.
18:02The Czech.
18:02Oh, no, he's from the Czech Republic.
18:04That's right.
18:04I thought he was Polish.
18:05Yeah.
18:05Yeah.
18:05Jane's giving me a hard time now.
18:06Anyway, Blaster did my electrical.
18:08He was working like 20, 18 hour days for 10 days.
18:12Did the whole lot in 10 days.
18:13Some of the other boats have taken longer, some shorter and stuff, but it's surprising the
18:16amount of work that's involved with that.
18:18But anyway, for a little boat.
18:20It's much harder because you need, you need to crawl into some small places and then find a solution
18:24how to hide the things.
18:26Yeah.
18:26Yeah, exactly.
18:27It's okay.
18:28So you've got an origi stove.
18:29That's exactly what I've got.
18:30Yeah.
18:30This is like, I think most of the boats, they have it.
18:33Yeah.
18:33They're using alcohol or jet boils, but I like a little stove.
18:36I had both.
18:37I was afraid.
18:38I was, I knew we're going to be in a mostly hot temperature zones and the gas is quite danger.
18:43Yeah.
18:43However, I got a present, a jet boiler from my friends.
18:46So I got a couple of bottles as an emergency ones.
18:49Yeah.
18:49Yeah.
18:49Yeah.
18:50So only in a situation that if there's really bad weather for the days.
18:54Yeah.
18:54And I need something hot so I can hold this jet boiler and boil the water even in the cockpit.
18:59Yes.
18:59Yep.
19:00Yep.
19:00Too true.
19:01Got exactly the same headlamps as well as all sorts of others.
19:03You've got your mandatory fishing gear.
19:05Jeepers.
19:05That's pretty cool.
19:06Is the fishing gear mandatory?
19:08Yeah, absolutely.
19:09If you want to have fun.
19:10I got a proper one.
19:11You see, like everything on this boat is, you know, if you get a magnifying glass, okay,
19:16and you can get all the sun shines into one point.
19:19So when I started the project, I got all the good energy of my friends getting into one
19:24point into the BB.
19:25So most of the things are, you know, provided to me by friends.
19:29Yeah.
19:29Yeah.
19:29So the friend who does the fishing, he studied what kind of fishing gear I need.
19:34Okay.
19:35Yeah.
19:35And he got me the road.
19:36He got me all the lures and the instruction, you know, which fish.
19:40Okay.
19:40And what to do.
19:41That's cool.
19:42All right.
19:43Yeah.
19:43That's very cool.
19:44And then life raft down the bottom here.
19:46Have you practiced getting it out in 15 seconds?
19:49Yes.
19:49Yeah.
19:50On the side.
19:50Yeah.
19:50It's not as hard as you think, but it took me three times.
19:53So that's cool.
19:54Is it your panic bag or whatever it is?
19:56No, this is my wardrobe.
19:58Your wardrobe.
19:59Ah, very good.
19:59And there is my first aid and the panic bag.
20:05Yeah.
20:06First aid kit is quite big, but it's good.
20:07It's MSOS kit.
20:09So that's cool.
20:10Sewer tubes for chart storage.
20:14Yeah.
20:15Chapers, creepers.
20:16That's cool.
20:16That's all your charts.
20:17Yeah.
20:18That's a good thing.
20:18The plaque from my friends, the closest friends.
20:21Yeah.
20:22There are good ships and the wood ships.
20:24Ships that sail the sea.
20:26But the best ships are friendships.
20:28Yeah.
20:28And they will always be.
20:30And you see, this is the cutout from one of my window.
20:33Oh, yeah.
20:34Okay.
20:34Stolen from my workshop.
20:35Yeah.
20:38So that's cool.
20:39All right.
20:40You got AOS up there, a little VHF, fire blanket, another knife.
20:45Oh, you got a hunting bow.
20:46Was that a fishing bow or just a normal bow?
20:48Is it a recurve or a compound bow?
20:49It's a bow.
20:50I had to sell my bow because I needed the money.
20:54Yeah.
20:54I found arrows.
20:55Look at that.
20:55A few arrows left.
20:56So I'm going to organize some bow maybe later.
20:59Yeah.
21:00Okay.
21:00So you got the arrows but not the bow?
21:02Yes.
21:02I've got all the fishing gear for a bow.
21:04I've got fishing heads on them.
21:05We're playing tonight because I love knives.
21:07Yeah.
21:08Yeah.
21:08Hatchet.
21:09Hatchet.
21:09That's very cool.
21:14Oh, nice little box here.
21:15That's a good idea.
21:16That's it for when I'm sailing.
21:17Yeah.
21:18I'm putting only the stuff that I need or I might need.
21:21So you just reach in and grab it because I used to keep a lot of stuff outside.
21:23I've got the tools and stuff and some of it got...
21:25Plus I can remove this.
21:27Oh, yeah.
21:28Oh, there you go.
21:29That's a good sit here.
21:30That's perfect, eh?
21:31Sit there out the hatch.
21:32I did the same thing but not quite as good as that.
21:35My seat was down lower but it'd hang out and I would call it, put your arm out the door
21:38like your Cadillac and you spend a lot of time here, half in and half out.
21:42That's where your dodger will come in handy.
21:43You wait and see.
21:44You'll be happy with that.
21:46So that's cool.
21:47406 bits and pieces.
21:49Yep.
21:50Compass up there.
21:51You can read at both sides.
21:52That's all good.
21:52Okay, let's have a look up in the Folk's way and see what's going on here.
21:56Forward.
21:57Eh?
21:57Yep.
21:58That was pretty organized.
21:59I floored all of the cabin in there and there's five independent lockers.
22:05Everyone has a watertight hatch.
22:07Yep.
22:08So they all work like a watertight compartment.
22:12Yep.
22:12Below waterline.
22:14Yep.
22:14Obviously...
22:15So it's a double hull effectively.
22:17Yes.
22:17Yeah.
22:18Yep.
22:18That's cool.
22:19Yeah, very much the business end.
22:21A lot of space there.
22:24This is definitely an absolutely around the world race.
22:27But you might have trouble trying to catch Niels for the Transat.
22:31Niels' boat is stripped out as light as anything.
22:33You've got nothing in it compared to you.
22:35But he's not going around the world.
22:37But he's heavier himself.
22:38Sorry?
22:39He's heavier himself.
22:40Yeah, exactly.
22:41He's a big mugger.
22:42Yeah, that's cool.
22:43So that's cool.
22:44So they're all watertight compartments.
22:46Where's your batteries?
22:47The batteries in the front one.
22:48Yeah, that's the same as I did with Trekker.
22:50I have a new one of the newest.
22:55Okay.
22:56So your lithium or I can't see the battery?
22:58It's more.
22:59It's a LiPo-Fe.
23:00A what?
23:01Oh, LiPo.
23:02LiPo-Fe.
23:03Yeah.
23:03That means they don't have this...
23:05Like...
23:06I'm not the electrician, but what he explained...
23:11Those batteries, they don't burn.
23:13Yeah.
23:14Okay.
23:14Because the problem with the lithium batteries, they can set in the fire.
23:17Yeah.
23:18But this one, they have this problem eliminated.
23:21Okay.
23:22Yep.
23:22All right.
23:23Yep.
23:23Sounds cool.
23:24All right.
23:24You've got your thermometer there, so you can see how you get hot.
23:27What's this deal?
23:27Is that air conditioning or heating?
23:29Yes.
23:29This is my AC.
23:31This is cool stuff.
23:32It's quite effective.
23:34Yeah.
23:34When I get the cabin fever, I can just cool down myself.
23:41Oh, yeah.
23:41That's cool.
23:42That's going to be a lifesaver.
23:44Yeah.
23:44Okay.
23:45Yeah, you need a fan.
23:45I had a big one.
23:47A huge one.
23:47Plus, I have a small fridge.
23:49Small fridge?
23:51Yep.
23:51Too cool.
23:51If you've got plenty of power, you run that.
23:53Well, my balance is so good that I can afford...
23:57And my idea is, if I get a fresh food, it's going to extend the life of the fresh food
24:04for the two, three, four days more.
24:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:06So I'm putting this on for like 20 minutes every couple of hours.
24:10Yeah, okay.
24:11Yeah, you can monitor it.
24:12It's easy.
24:13But idea was not to use this constantly.
24:15Idea was, if I get stuck in some space doldrums and heat would be the biggest factor.
24:20Yeah, yeah.
24:21So if I can switch this on, cool down some water and have a cool water to drink,
24:27that may be the next ever.
24:28I mean, I can't survive without cold drinks.
24:31I didn't put anything on Trekker because it was across the Atlantic.
24:34But in the BOC, when I went around solo, I had to have a fridge.
24:37So I had a fridge that exactly fitted six cans of drink.
24:40And if I don't get cold drinks, I'm baggered.
24:42So, yeah, I know where you're coming from.
24:45All right.
24:45Well, that's really cool.
24:46Now, the big top secret bit, because you did your mast pull down and I said,
24:50I said, well, what was the weight?
24:52And you told me it was like, oh, 60 kilos or something.
24:55And I said, what?
24:56No way.
24:57And I thought, you're cheating because you've got too much on the keel.
25:00And they said, well, you know, I'm at the top end of the maximum limit.
25:03But then we looked under the cabin sole.
25:04Just show us under the cabin here because you've got the whole cabin sole bit.
25:08There's truckloads of weight and food and all sorts of stuff here.
25:11Cans and bits and pieces and all the lockers were done.
25:14That's an interesting one.
25:15Yeah.
25:17My best friends.
25:18Oh, just to finish that story so we don't confuse non-sailors.
25:20So with all the weight under the floor and all the gear in the lockers,
25:24that's why you've got such a heavy rating.
25:26So we're not accepting it.
25:27But we still gave you your class certificate.
25:29And we've told Jacob, when you empty the boat at the end of the round the world race,
25:33you're going to have to do the pull down test again.
25:35That won't be a problem.
25:36Won't be a problem.
25:37Yeah.
25:38This is my special food.
25:39Yeah.
25:41It's a bar designed by my friends who are the nutritionists.
25:44They bought all the ingredients.
25:46They made me about hundreds of them.
25:48Yeah.
25:49And they went to the local shop to kind of pack them this way.
25:53So I'm pretty okay for the emergency food.
25:56Yeah, that's good.
25:57All right.
25:58So you're looking very cool.
26:01I like it.
26:01It's got a great feel, eh, Jingjing?
26:03Best looking boat inside.
26:05Yeah.
26:05Oh, thank you.
26:06It's hidden already.
26:07Yeah, yeah.
26:07No, it's just like a home.
26:09Absolutely, it's a home.
26:10It's fantastic.
26:11I like the party.
26:12I like to, you know, organize the party in my back.
26:14Well, we're going to have a cram them all on board and see how many we can get.
26:18I had lots of parties, you know, with the sailors because, no picture with me now, but
26:23Yeah.
26:24Anywhere I was in the marina, there's always people gathering and I was like a celebrity.
26:29Yeah.
26:30They all were coming and, oh, is this the mini 650?
26:34Yeah.
26:34That's a mini 580.
26:36What's that?
26:37So that's a new thing.
26:38You better watch.
26:39Yeah.
26:39As soon as you say mini, everyone thinks we're the mini in a class 650, but it's not.
26:43It's the new one.
26:44And this will become so much more well-known globally than, you know.
26:48Ooh.
26:48Yeah.
26:49I think so.
26:50It has a great potential because, like, that looks like a new tendency of the people building
26:55their own boat.
26:57Yeah.
26:57Plus, this way to build the boat, it became, they realized this is quite a strong boat.
27:04Oh, it's like super strong.
27:06Yeah.
27:06So all the big racing boats, they start making them this way.
27:10Yeah.
27:10Yeah, yeah.
27:11Well, now there's a whole movement also for environmental reasons.
27:13Even in the mocha, there's a cut.
27:15There's at least one, and there might be, I think there's a second one about to go, to
27:20build a competitive mocha for the next one-day globe because it's a lot more environmentally
27:24friendly than all the other stuff associated with all the big things.
27:27But that's all speed and money, but they're still confident enough that they can keep
27:30it, I've read all the stats, they can keep a plywood epoxy mocha to within about 10% of
27:37the speed, even less than a full carbon bit.
27:40But anyway, that's different.
27:41But yeah, we love the 650s, we love the mochas, all that sort of stuff.
27:45They're really cool, but this is a whole different league, different system.
27:48So, okay, I think that's, we don't want to lock them down.
27:52I'm intrigued to find another Vaux fanatic here, you know.
27:55I think you're the first one that I've found that's got arrows on their boat.
28:00Not only, I have so many things.
28:03Yeah.
28:03See this, see my company?
28:04Oh, jeep, is that your girlfriend?
28:05Yes.
28:06Just let's keep this as a jeep.
28:07She's my girlfriend?
28:08Before you start, this is a G-rated program.
28:09Just how do you look, make yourself look.
28:13Okay, very good.
28:15Yeah, is that your favorite thing?
28:16What's your favorite thing on the boat?
28:18What's your favorite thing?
28:20I like everything pretty much on my boat.
28:22You like everything?
28:23Yes, yes.
28:23I don't know, don't get me started about this, because I could be talking with every single
28:29element, and everyone has, you know, similar good stories, so.
28:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:34All right.
28:35Okay, well, well done.
28:37Take that, Jane Jane.
28:37You can sign off.
28:38Well done.
28:39We're happy to have you involved.
28:40It's great to have a Polish-Irishman.
28:43You're sailing under Ireland, don't you?
28:44Not Poland.
28:45For the Ireland, because, you know, all the community spirit that helped me to proceed
28:49with the project, so, and, well, I was born in Poland, but, like, my heart was in Ireland.
28:55I love both countries, you know, and I'm proud to be Pole.
28:58Yeah.
28:59Very proud to be Pole.
29:00Yeah.
29:00Yeah.
29:00But I love Ireland.
29:02Yeah, yeah.
29:02Big time.
29:03Yeah, cool.
29:03So I have a Polish flag, I have an Irish flag, and, but, you know, officially-
29:07A bit of flag waving.
29:07The boat is registered in Ireland.
29:10Yeah.
29:10So has an Irish flag.
29:11Yeah.
29:11Like, there's Renault, who's a Swiss, but he's both registered in Poland.
29:17He's a Polish flag.
29:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:19Okay.
29:19So what's it?
29:20So just a couple of sign-off questions.
29:22What is the thing you're looking forward to most, and what do you see as your biggest
29:26challenge now?
29:29The biggest challenge is probably saying goodbye to my son, who is coming tonight.
29:35Yeah.
29:35I went through this once, and I thought, it's not going to happen again, but it's happening
29:40again.
29:41Yeah.
29:41But, you know, that's going to be the hardest.
29:43What I'm looking forward to is just adventure.
29:46Yeah.
29:47Just adventure.
29:48Get out there and go for it.
29:49The problem is, I come from a communist country.
29:51Yeah.
29:51Like, until I was 19 years old, there was a communist in Poland, so we had no passport.
29:55We couldn't even dream about going abroad.
29:57Yeah.
29:58And since I remember, I always wanted.
30:00Yeah.
30:00So this is why I emigrated to different country to learn language, to see the things.
30:07So, yeah, and when I was a kid, I dreamt, like, if someone...
30:10Someone came to take me on the boat to the Baltic Sea, like, I could let him cut my hand off,
30:18you know?
30:18So then, all of a sudden, then I was sailing Biscay Bay, Scotland, you know, Irish Sea.
30:24It was like, wow.
30:25And now I'm sailing around the world.
30:27Yeah.
30:27It's something that I never dared to dream about.
30:30Yeah.
30:31I can remember the day that, like, Luenca was out there in the shipyard going...
30:34Quite something.
30:37Our boat's registered in Poland.
30:38I've got a boat registered in Poland, too.
30:39Yeah.
30:40But I'm an Aussie and Jane's Chinese.
30:43All right.
30:44Cool.
30:44We'll be talking a lot over the next 15 months.
30:46Thank you very much, Dan.
30:46So good luck and love your boat.
30:48Love you as part of this whole thing.
30:51And how do you feel it's amazing with all the other boats and people, eh?
30:54It's a whole different dimension.
30:55Do you know what struck me the most?
30:57Like, we knew each other.
30:59We saw each other on YouTube and stuff.
31:02Yeah, everyone was sort of into that relationship.
31:04And then when we came here, we just hug each other like friends that we were so good friends
31:08and we haven't seen each other for a long time, you know?
31:10Or never before.
31:11Straight away, click.
31:13And then when I grew up with Adam, we transport our boats, you know,
31:16we had some kind of things to maneuver.
31:20And we had to do something on the boat, like put down the mast.
31:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:24Put it up.
31:24Yeah, yeah.
31:25There was no explanation needed.
31:27We just jump on the boat.
31:28Everyone knows what and where and how.
31:31Absolutely.
31:31That's amazing stuff, you know?
31:32It's very special.
31:33I feel like, you know, this is the big family and I'm so happy to be part of it.
31:38Yeah.
31:38And you're part of the first one.
31:39The first one's always the best one.
31:41Yes.
31:42They'll all be good.
31:43The next four years, it'll be cool.
31:45But yeah, there's something special about the first one.
31:47So that's cool.
31:48All right.
31:49Well, I'm out of here.
31:50So keep at it.
31:51And we'll be around.
31:52Thank you very much.
31:54Thank you, Gene-Jane.
31:54Thank you, Jacob.
31:56Oh, yeah, yeah.
31:56Oh, yeah, yeah.
31:56Oh, yeah, yeah.
