Drug overdoses, cruel WWE ribs gone wrong, suspected heart attacks and more.
Transcript
00:00So we are going to have some fun today, and we're also going to get into some murky waters.
00:04So make sure you go and put some diapers on.
00:07I don't know what that means.
00:08Do you want to relive some truly bonkers stories behind some great wrestling matches?
00:12Of course you do, that's why you clicked.
00:14So hit that subscribe button, strap yourself in, and here we go.
00:18Number 10, Kane vs The Undertaker.
00:19Now let's not pretend I didn't love this when I was a kid,
00:22and when Kane turned up at Bad Blood 1997, I couldn't believe it.
00:26I mean, come on now, that's got to be Kane.
00:28The brothers then built to Unforgiven 1998, where yes, they had an Inferno match.
00:33Which seemed a little bit mean, because don't forget the narrative was,
00:36that as kids, The Undertaker had set his brother on fire.
00:40So now here we were years later, and why don't we play around with the flames again?
00:44Now I suppose this sort of helped the big red machine,
00:46because of course he had that full suit on, so he was protected.
00:49But actually, behind the scenes, he was meant to turn up to a venue the day beforehand,
00:54to test all of this, to make sure nobody was going to die.
00:56But his cab driver got lost, so by the time he did reach the venue,
01:01well, there was nothing else we could do.
01:03We were going to have to work for the big night, and see what happened.
01:05It was also hell, ironically, for both guys,
01:07because of course there was so much flames,
01:10they couldn't get enough oxygen in,
01:12so they stumbled around the ring going,
01:13I can't breathe.
01:15And you think the police would have been involved here too,
01:17because once more, do not forget, as children,
01:20this is what The Undertaker had done.
01:23He also got chokeslammed through his parents' grave.
01:26I'll tell you, okay, versus The Undertaker's the absolute best.
01:29Number nine, Mark Henry versus nobody.
01:32June 3rd, 2011, Smack-A-Down.
01:34The show had ended, and Vince McMahon told Mark Henry,
01:37hey, Mark, if you could go to the ring,
01:39and have a dark match against Sin Cara,
01:41that would be absolutely fabu.
01:43And the world's strongest man arrived there,
01:45and he couldn't see anyone.
01:47As it turned out, this was a McMahon rib.
01:49As Henry told Stone Cold Steve Austin on his podcast,
01:52he was so damn livid about this,
01:54because he realized what was going on,
01:56and then was like, wait a minute,
01:57I've been in this company for 15 years,
01:59and that's how I'm being treated.
02:01I feel totally disrespected.
02:03He started to destroy the ringside area.
02:05He decided he was going to yell at his boss as well,
02:08but when he got backstage, everybody had left,
02:10which was also part of the practical joke,
02:12so Mark decided, that's it, I'm going to quit.
02:16Ship.
02:16Amazingly, this was the catalyst for the Hall of Pain run, though,
02:19because as the story goes,
02:20they both then sat down, they watched this footage,
02:23and Vinnie Mac was like, look, you can act like this.
02:25When we're doing proper television,
02:27you are going to get massively over.
02:29Now, a small side of me thinks maybe this was retroactively fitting around it,
02:32but still, it was a massive success,
02:35because Henry did start acting like a killer,
02:38and pretty soon, he was the world heavyweight champion.
02:40So he never really did look better,
02:42and it's all because somebody decided to piss him off.
02:45Number 8, Dean Malenko vs. Billy Kidman.
02:47So we are going to WCW in 2000 here,
02:50which means we must warn you,
02:52everything is totally crazy.
02:53I'm going to get the sold-out pay-per-view.
02:55Neither Dean Malenko or Billy Kidman were meant to be on this show,
02:58but when all of a sudden,
02:59World Championship Wrestling were suffering from injuries,
03:01well, they had no choice.
03:03Because it was meant to be Chris Benoit vs. Jeff Jarrett,
03:05but poor Double J suffered a concussion,
03:07which meant Benoit was moved into the main event scene,
03:10and Malenko and Kidman,
03:11they were just thrown on the card.
03:12Billy also had to wrestle members of the Revolution Stable
03:15in three different matches,
03:17mostly because WCW would come up with this, like, triple threat gimmick,
03:21and they were desperate to do it.
03:22Because each one had to have a theater spin to it, though,
03:24the first was a catch-as-catch-can match with Dean Malenko.
03:28The rules being, you've got to keep it inside the ring,
03:31you've got to wrestle,
03:32and if anybody does leave,
03:33they're going to get disqualified.
03:35Well, nobody told Dean about this,
03:37because it was only decided at the last minute.
03:40So Malenko, being a professional wrestler in 2000,
03:43of course at one point he went to the outside.
03:46The ref had no choice.
03:47He went, you're disqualified.
03:49And that was not meant to happen.
03:50Unsurprisingly, too, Dean Malenko left WCW after this.
03:55I wonder why.
03:56Number seven, Chris Jericho versus Steve Austin.
03:58Do we all remember back at Vengeance 2001,
04:00Chris Jericho beat the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin
04:03in one night to become the WWF champion for the first time?
04:07Poor Chris had to go through a right hazing here,
04:10because he learned about this in catering
04:12when The Undertaker and Vince McMahon were going,
04:14ha, ha, ha, business must be in the toilet
04:16if we're going to make Jericho the champion.
04:18And he was probably suffering from imposter syndrome straight away.
04:21As Jericho is retold many a time, though,
04:23as he soon learned,
04:25you may get to the tippity-top of the wrestling tree,
04:28but it's still pretty damn lonely.
04:29Because not only had everybody left the building
04:31to beat the traffic, meaning he was by himself,
04:33when he went to his hotel room, he lost his key.
04:36And when he went to ask for another one,
04:38they wouldn't give it to him,
04:39because how the hell do we know?
04:41You're Chris Jericho.
04:41He had to tell them that if they did go into his room,
04:44they would see two championships belts.
04:45When he finally got back in there,
04:47he had to eat some pizza that had gotten really cold.
04:51There you go, my friends.
04:53You may be dreaming of being WWE champion,
04:56but you're still going to have to eat a bunch of crappy food.
04:58Number six, Rikishi versus Kurt Angle.
05:00So turn away now if you're not into disgusting things.
05:04If you are still watching, you're a weird person.
05:06Coming in the King of the Ring 2000, though,
05:08this was a massive night for Kurt Angle,
05:10because he was going to win the one-night tournament
05:12and, as we now know, start his ascensity to superstardom.
05:16I suppose Big Kish thought differently, though.
05:20He decided to play a little bit of a joke
05:21because it stood to reason that Angle at one point
05:23was going to have to suffer the fate of the stink face.
05:26And Rikishi decided,
05:27well, maybe I'll go to the toilet before the match.
05:30I won't clean my rear end.
05:32So when I stick it in Kurt's face,
05:35he will have poo on his nose.
05:37I mean, I don't want to see these words,
05:39but that's what we're getting at here.
05:40Now, to be fair, Angle on his podcast
05:42said he can see the humor in this,
05:44although I'll take over.
05:45I can't at all.
05:46And we also then learned
05:47that Rikishi would do this all the time.
05:50It's like a damn epidemic.
05:51I mean, surely that breaks some kind of HR rule.
05:55If you sat down with them and say,
05:56yeah, somebody pooed on my face,
05:59they'd be like, don't worry,
06:00we're going to take some action.
06:02Didn't happen.
06:02Number five, CM Punk versus Samoa Joe.
06:04So you all know this one,
06:05because it was very recent.
06:06We have to put it in here.
06:08How the hell could we not?
06:09It is amazing to watch back now,
06:11because when Samoa Joe and CM Punk
06:12did start all in 2023
06:14in Wembley Arena,
06:16or Wembley Stadium, I should say,
06:17CM Punk looks perfectly fine.
06:20But minutes prior to this,
06:21he had gone into a fight with Jack Perry.
06:23Damn.
06:24It stemmed from the pre-show
06:25where Jungle Boy made some comments
06:26about using real glass.
06:28And this was an incident
06:29that had happened on AEW Collision
06:31a few weeks prior
06:32when Jack did want to do this.
06:34And Punk was like,
06:35no, that's really silly.
06:36And then we got round two
06:37at the pay-per-view,
06:38because of course,
06:38as soon as Punk heard this quit,
06:40he took it as a slight.
06:41He met him at the entranceway
06:42when, yes,
06:43it sounds like some punches were thrown.
06:46And even poor Tony Khan
06:47got dragged into it.
06:48I mean, something huge
06:49must have gone down,
06:49because of course,
06:50CM Punk was fired
06:51a few weeks after this.
06:53Although moving that to one side,
06:55you do have to be very impressed
06:56with CM's performance.
06:58He must have been filled with beans,
07:00but he still went out
07:01and did what he did.
07:02It was damn impressive.
07:03To be fair, though,
07:04he does have this wry smile on his face.
07:07So maybe he knew friends.
07:09Maybe he knew.
07:10Number four,
07:10Mankind vs. The Undertaker.
07:12So most people know
07:12every single last detail
07:14from their King of the Ring,
07:15Hell in a Cell 1998 match,
07:17because even today,
07:18it's totally insane.
07:19If you've always wondered
07:20how Mick Foley got this signed off, though,
07:22well,
07:23he didn't actually really do it,
07:24because he pitched this idea
07:26to management
07:26and they were like,
07:27no, Mick,
07:27there's no way you can start off
07:29on top of the structure.
07:30That would be nuts,
07:31because he was like a child
07:32and he kept prodding the bear,
07:34eventually very close to the night.
07:36Someone went,
07:36okay, fine,
07:37but just be safe.
07:38Now, this wasn't ideal
07:39because it meant
07:39that people constructing the thing
07:40had no clue,
07:42so when they were putting it together,
07:43they weren't building it
07:44to hold two human beings.
07:46In fact,
07:47they were using cable ties.
07:48That's why when you go
07:49and watch it now,
07:49as soon as Mark Calloway
07:50and Mick Foley
07:51are up there,
07:52you see the damn roof
07:53start to sag.
07:54It's also why it breaks
07:55when Undertaker hits
07:56that horrible choke slam.
07:58And if you want a few more tidbits,
08:00watch when the Undertaker
08:01comes into the ring.
08:02He quite visibly winces.
08:04That's because he was working
08:05with a broken damn foot.
08:06It all came from the fact
08:07that Foley was terrified
08:08that they wouldn't be able
08:09to outdo what the dead man
08:10did with Shawn Michaels
08:11back in 1997.
08:13Don't worry, Mick,
08:14you manage this.
08:15Vince McMahon was also
08:16legitimately fuming after this
08:17and while he thanked Foley,
08:18he was like,
08:19please never do that again.
08:20Five minutes later,
08:22Mankind still came out
08:24to distract in the main event.
08:26The show must go on.
08:28Number three,
08:28Bret Hart versus
08:29the British Bulldog.
08:30Do you want to know
08:30why Bret Hart claims
08:31this is one of the most
08:32successful achievements
08:33of his entire career?
08:34Minutes beforehand,
08:35the British Bulldog told him,
08:37oh, hey, cuz,
08:39I don't remember
08:40any of the match
08:40because I may have
08:41gone out last night
08:42and done a bunch of drugs.
08:44Whoops.
08:45This does mean
08:45if you do go and watch it today,
08:47Bret is quite literally
08:48shouting spots
08:49to Davey Boy Smith
08:51because the British Bulldog
08:52was such a good worker
08:53instinctively, I suppose.
08:54he was just doing
08:55whatever his brother-in-law said.
08:57This is even more ridiculous
08:58because nobody had a clue
08:59to the point,
09:00even when it did get out
09:01there in the wild,
09:02everyone was like,
09:02that can't be true.
09:04This goes to show,
09:05Bret Hart is a genius.
09:06How he did it so calmly,
09:08I will never be able
09:08to understand
09:09that when I do
09:10my wrestling matches,
09:11I can run through it
09:1245,762 times
09:14and be standing at the curtain
09:16and turn to my opponent
09:17and go,
09:17nope, I've totally forgotten it.
09:18Very sadly,
09:19the British Bulldog
09:19was released soon after this
09:20because he was struggling
09:21so much.
09:22Still,
09:23this was absolutely
09:24the highlight of his career
09:25and regardless
09:26what was going on,
09:28when he did win
09:28that Intercontinental title,
09:31warm and fuzzy
09:31in your tum tum.
09:32Number two,
09:33Steve Austin versus The Rock.
09:34So this is certainly
09:35a tale that has done
09:36the rounds,
09:37but it's a very important one.
09:38Because WrestleMania 19
09:39was Stone Cold
09:40Steve Austin's last match.
09:42Now, he didn't want
09:43to tell anybody
09:43because The Rock
09:44was going to win
09:45and he didn't want
09:45to steal his thunder,
09:47but because he wanted
09:47to roll into that show
09:49in the best shape possible,
09:50he was drinking
09:51a bunch of coffee
09:52and he was topping
09:53that off with energy drinks.
09:54Now, a huge part of this too
09:55was because he was so injury
09:56and he is a human
09:57so anxieties were running wild,
09:59but he basically
10:00overloaded his system,
10:01thought he was having
10:02a heart attack
10:03and he had to go
10:04to the flipping hospital
10:04to make sure
10:05he wasn't about to die.
10:06I mean, he was still so bad
10:07the doctors told him
10:08you absolutely cannot wrestle.
10:10This is when the Rattlesnake
10:11took matters into his own hands
10:13and he rolled into
10:14Mania 19
10:14and he still did
10:16what he did.
10:16Now, you can say
10:17in terms of their trilogy
10:18at WrestleMania,
10:19this was the worst
10:20of the three,
10:21but you should not be
10:22using that word worst.
10:23It's still damn, damn good.
10:25It's actually why now
10:25when you do go back
10:26to watch it,
10:27this one has even more
10:28gravitas because 24 hours earlier,
10:30nobody even knew
10:31what was going to happen
10:31with Steve Austin
10:32when he walked off
10:34into the sunset.
10:35This is why he is
10:36one of the best
10:37whatever he had to do.
10:39The one Kurt Angle
10:40versus Brock Lesnar.
10:41So go and watch
10:41the 18th of September 2003
10:43SmackDown
10:44and you will see
10:45an iron match
10:46between Brock Lesnar
10:46and Kurt Angle
10:47that does not get
10:48enough love.
10:50I mean, it is
10:50pretty damn special.
10:51How Kurt did this
10:52I will never know though
10:53because as he has
10:54talked about,
10:55he was essentially
10:56drugged up too.
10:57It's an absolutely
10:58horrible story as well
10:59because 24 hours prior
11:00he got a phone call
11:01from his brother
11:02who said,
11:03oh hey Kurt,
11:04our sister has just
11:05passed away
11:05from a heroin overdose.
11:07This affected Angle
11:08on two different levels.
11:09One,
11:10he just lost a family member,
11:11but two,
11:12he had fallen out
11:13with his sister
11:14months prior
11:14because he said,
11:15if you can't kick the habit,
11:17I don't know
11:17if I can talk to you anymore.
11:19I mean,
11:19I don't know how
11:20anybody deals with that.
11:21Kurt was also dealing
11:22with his own
11:22severe drug issues
11:23so to try and drown
11:24his pain,
11:25he reached out
11:26and took 20
11:27extra strength Vicodin
11:28and then unsurprisingly
11:30passed out.
11:31He didn't wake up
11:32until 5pm the next day
11:33meaning in four hours
11:34he had to be on TV
11:35wrestling for 60 minutes
11:36and when he looked
11:37at his phone
11:37it just said
11:38miss cool WWE,
11:39miss cool WWE,
11:40miss cool WWE
11:41because somebody
11:42was probably terrified
11:43that something terrible
11:43had happened.
11:44Angle himself recounted
11:45this all on Joe Rogan's podcast
11:47and yet when he did
11:48go out there,
11:49like I say,
11:50he had a banger
11:51with Brock Lesnar
11:52and this just totally
11:54perplexes the mind
11:55and it should quite
11:56literally be impossible.
11:57Angle himself
11:58described it as
11:59he had to do
11:59as good a job as possible
12:00because it was the best
12:01way to block any emotions
12:02he had towards his sister
12:03so that would get you
12:05right in the sad gland.
12:06But it's also
12:07a great piece of evidence
12:08that when you are
12:09talking about
12:09the best wrestlers ever
12:10you gotta throw
12:12Kurt Angle
12:12into the mix.
12:14Thank you very much
12:14for stopping by.
12:15My name was Simon Miller
12:16I appreciate you muchly
12:17and I'll see you soon.
