00:12Hurtin, we're both in Fiji. How are you feeling?
00:17Well, this is a paradise place. It's a wonderful location.
00:20I think everyone including me, everybody thinks this is a wonderful place.
00:25Yeah.
00:26And we're enjoying every single day.
00:28Yeah, probably enjoying it more because you've just sailed over 12,000 miles to get here.
00:32It doesn't feel like it.
04:03Je me sens beaucoup.
04:54Tell me, tell me 24-hour day in your life,
05:09je vais faller.
05:10Et je vais probablement rester dans l'Alonne
05:12la plus de l'Alonne.
05:13Et je vais regarder,
05:15maintenant et encore,
05:16voir si il y a quelque chose à l'Alonne.
05:18Ou je vais...
05:19Est-ce que vous setz une alarme ou vous laissez-la-la-l'Alonne ?
05:20Non, je ne vais pas.
05:21Je ne vais pas.
05:22Je ne vais pas.
05:23Je vais juste voir.
05:24J'ai juste à l'Alonne.
05:25Je vais voir à l'Alonne.
05:26Et je regarde à l'Alonne,
05:27à l'Alonne,
05:28à la nuit-time,
05:29à voir si je peux voir les stars.
05:30Et je fais ça régulièrement.
05:32Et je regarde aussi
05:33la barometer,
05:34à chaque fois-ci.
05:49à l'Alonne,
05:50à l'Alonne,
05:51à l'Alonne,
05:52à l'Alonne.
05:53Je ne vais pas avoir de changement
05:54pour le futur.
05:55Je ne vais pas avoir de l'Alonne.
05:56Et ça va jusqu'à 3 ou 4 heures
05:58au matin.
05:59Je vais avoir de l'Alonne.
06:00Je vais commencer à l'Alonne
06:01car c'est le moment
06:02à l'alonne.
06:03Je vais avoir de l'Alonne
06:04deux ou trois heures
06:05sur la face-time
06:07avec ma famille,
06:08avec les enfants.
06:09Chaque jour ?
06:10Chaque jour ?
06:11Chaque jour,
06:12je parle de l'Alonne.
06:13Elle est amoureuse
06:14de l'Alonne.
06:15Elle est amoureuse
06:16Je vais avoir de l'Alonne.
06:17J'ai parlé à l'Alonne
06:18de l'Alonne.
06:19Il y a plein d'Alonne.
06:20Il y a tellement.
06:21Il y a des plus,
06:22il y a tellement.
06:23Il y a tellement.
06:24Il y a tellement.

06:29Il y a tellement.
06:30Il y a tellement.
06:31Il y a tellement.
06:32Il y a tellement.
06:33Il y a tellement.
06:34Je ne me sens pas trop
06:36d'avoir de la parler.
06:37Alors ça.
06:38Il y a tout.
06:39Il y a très bien.
06:40De l'Alonne.

10:03surprising
10:03yep

10:04too true
10:05so um
10:06that's cool
10:06so where's
10:07the screaming
10:08moments for you
10:09the super highs
10:10where you see
10:11something
10:11because you're
10:12pretty
10:12I won't call you
10:13bland
10:14but you're
10:14pretty
10:14down the line
10:15with emotions
10:16you know
10:16you see some
10:17big laughing
10:17going on
10:18and bits and pieces
10:18of time
10:19but you're never
10:19jumping up and
10:20down
10:20and say
10:20wow
10:21look at this
10:21blah blah blah
10:22but there
10:23must have been
10:23something that
10:24happened
10:24when you saw
10:25something
10:26I don't know, nothing has happened that, I mean, I am so happy all the time, the environment that I am in 24 hours a day, and I feel so very lucky to experience what I experience every day, and really there is nothing there that I could say, oh my God, it's been extra special there, I think every day is very special, and only time the heart's beating is when suddenly a squall comes and suddenly 40 knot wins, and you obviously want to make sure that there is no damage to the boat,
10:55and that's the only time really the urgency arises, other than that there is no urgency, and nor, I never get, I don't get excited about, I mean, I wish I could fish, catch fish every now and again, it happens so very rarely, I would like to be excited about catching fish, but I'm so terrible at it, I'm going to go and see somebody here, see what kind of lures they use, maybe I'm doing something wrong, I don't know.
11:21Yeah, okay, so okay, so that's pretty straightforward, so how are you coping with the, when you retired from the GGR, it was all about communication, and now you've got it, it's like unlimited communication, you're doing everything as if you're online, what happens to you, does it take you off the boat, you know, like when you're doing it, and you don't even think about the boat, because you're just running your normal world, and.
11:49Well, I am running a normal life, other than physically working at work, I am, I am in, I mean, I can even watch my dogs at home on web cam, and.
11:59So it is, it is very much being normal, as if I am at home, with regard to, you can do your banking, you can do your business dealings, you can do so much, and I also do a lot of researching, you know, if I want something, I research about it, and I have so much more time.
12:16Yeah.
12:16To research things, and read about things, that I didn't used to have, so I look at each rapport, in a slightly different angle, because I spend so much more time thinking about it.
12:26Yeah.
12:26And, um, so the life is very normal, I mean, I must say, so far, it doesn't feel like we've come all this way from Les Abdallon, it really doesn't feel like it.
12:38So your days are being filled up with the normal life sort of thing, that's amazing.
12:42And, uh, uh, we have been very lucky with the weather, I must say.
12:46Yeah, I think you're right, but that's, that's part of the Tradewind route, you know, like, uh, you know, ever from the, uh, late 70s, you know, used to read stories about boats sailing from America across the Pacific, and they'd be really challenged to put their second reef in, because they'd go down to New Zealand or something, because they'd never done it before.
13:02Yeah.
13:02It's Tradewinds, and I think, I'm, you know, yeah, I'm seeing, like, normal stuff, there's everyone that's been going through this leg, it's, it, it has been pretty good, generally.
13:12It's typical Tradewinds, there's nothing there that I'd call global warming yet, you know, or climate change, you know.
13:17On the next leg, we'll have this barrier reef to pass through.
13:20Yeah.
13:20That would be exciting, I think, I've never done it before.
13:22Yeah.
13:23Well, you know, it's interesting, because I'm here, I'm getting this feedback, we're going to have to sit down with everyone and have a big chat, because having spent a long time in the reef, and sailing in reefs, and just not even going anywhere near land, just anchoring every night in reefs, once you understand what it does and how it works, it's no, no big deal.
13:38So, like, you know, you treat it with respect, but it's, but those that have never experienced it before, I can see there's a degree of hesitation and fear of the unknown.
13:46But Rain Island, going through there up to, around the top of Cape York is, is challenging, but not, not extreme at all, you know, but going to be interesting.
13:58So, it will be nice.
13:59Yeah, it'll be fantastic.
14:00We can't just go, fall asleep for the next 10 hours, because if there are reefs around you, you have to be on tiptoes until you pass these obstacles.
14:08But even with that, if you get too tired, or the sun's in the wrong direction, or anything like that, you just go and anchor behind a reef as well, because they're like islands, you know, they kill, they're just like a breakwater.
14:16You just go and anchor there.
14:17It's strange, because the, because the, the tide comes in and there's nothing, you're just out in the middle of the ocean, but you, you're anchored and it's flat calm, you know.
14:23So, there's a lot of opportunity there, but anyway, stuff to talk about later.
14:28So, you've made the decision, because you have the option to go to Thursday Island or Darwin, but not both.
14:32So, you're going to go to Darwin?
14:33Yes, because, I mean, normally after a journey, I, I like civilization, I like people, I like traffic.
14:40Yeah.
14:41I, I like all the things that we normally enjoy.
14:44So, I will definitely, I will prefer to be in, in a city and, and see things.
14:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:50Yeah, no, that's cool.
14:51So, have you thought much about the plans going down to Cape Town?
14:55It's 9,700 miles or something, or you just take it as it comes?
14:58Yeah, I, I only ever think one leg at a time.
15:01Yeah.
15:01And, and I have to arrive to Darwin safely in one piece.
15:05Yeah.
15:05With my boat in order for me to plan the next leg.
15:09So, until that happens, I can't really make any plans for the next leg, because you don't know what's going to happen for the next 3,000 miles or whatever.
15:18Yeah.
15:19However long it takes.
15:20So, too true.
15:22So, the way this conversation is going, you know, I, I could ask you the question, why are you doing the GGR?
15:28You know, forget about Starlink, forget about all the bits and pieces, you know, what, what's, what's the attraction for you?
15:32You cannot compare GGR with anything else.
15:35No.
15:35It is, I mean, nobody can compare GGR is something entirely different.
15:41And it is, it really is so very extreme to be with yourself and, and you have this mind games and, and you have this constant need to know what's happening to the loved ones, what's happening around.
15:59And, and although nobody needs you, but you need them to know, I, I, I, I certainly need them and I certainly need to know that they are okay.
16:07And, and that is a very difficult obstacle to overcome.
16:10And, and, and, and GGR is something entirely different.
16:14No one can.
16:15It's tough.
16:16It's horrible.
16:16It's grueling, you know.
16:17Just, just, just, you look at the results of the people, the finish and amount of people try, you have over 50 people attempted, you have less than 20 start and you have few people that finish.
16:29Yeah.
16:29And, and, and they don't all stop because they, they break their boats.
16:33They often have, a lot of them have a lot of mental problems on the road.
16:36And I know though, even those who finish, they have mental problems because we talk to one another.
16:40Everyone does.
16:41It is very, very hard.
16:42And then it all depends how much you're prepared to push yourself, how much you're prepared to, to do for the GGR and GGR is something entirely different.
16:51And no one can underestimate GGR.
16:54And, and when people called me about the GGR and I said, everything you're worried about, you shouldn't, it is what you don't worry about, what you shouldn't worry about.
17:03Yeah.
17:03And, and, and that is very, very important.
17:06And it never comes out of my mind.
17:08I'd love to again, as you know, try it again.
17:10It's never come out of my mind.
17:13And it is, it's very, very difficult.
17:15I failed twice, but I also learned a great deal as, as an education.
17:20And I'd love to try again.
17:21It's really interesting, because I don't even believe, you know, when you retired in Cape Town, I believe you had succeeded because it had answered the question.
17:29You know what I mean?
17:30And you could move on and you joined the MGR.
17:32Now I asked the question on the GGR because now I ask you the question of why are you doing the MGR?
17:36MGR is, compared to GGR, it is, it is like a holiday going around the world.
17:43This is like a holiday.
17:44You can rebuild your boat in every stop.
17:46You can do, you can go home.
17:49You can do so much stuff.
17:50So, this is, this is a holiday going around the world.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Really is.
17:54Yeah.
17:55Okay.
17:56So, yeah, I tend to agree with part of that.
17:59It's an adventure.
18:00It's serious.
18:00You're just doing it really well.
18:02I think it's part of the challenge now for us, as you know, you know.
18:04I've stalled off on the press release going out and wait until you see the headline on this press release.
18:09He's a doozy.
18:10In fact, I'm going to tell you because you'll be after it.
18:11It's, uh, the mad bastard might be right.
18:15McIntyre MGR.
18:17Because when we announced the mini globe race, immediately picked up the tabloid headline of being,
18:24what's the mad bastard doing now?
18:26You know, with the whole concept of the MGR being totally obscure and a bit crazy.
18:31I mean, look at the people who's doing this race.
18:34Yeah, well, now, that's what I'm getting to.
18:36Now, the fleet's halfway, not halfway around the world, but with 12,000 miles, they've gone a long way and it's working.
18:42And I look at the different, various, different type of people.
18:46Each one is so very different than the other.
18:48And everybody has their own agenda, their own plan, their own ambitions.
18:53It is, it is, it is, it is wonderful.
18:56I mean, it really, really is.
18:57And, and I hope next time you have twice as many people doing this race in, in, in, in three years time.
19:04And, and I think everybody will have a wonderful experience.
19:09Yeah.
19:09I'm certain of it.
19:10Yeah.
19:11Yeah.
19:11I think the, the challenge at the moment is I think all of you are making it look too easy, you know, because it's all going well.
19:17I mean, the, and I say that in the context, the boat design and the concept is right.
19:21It's working and the sailors have done really well to prepare, you know, there's a really good preparation on that.
19:26And so everyone has minimized the risk as much as possible.
19:30And they're here because still the weather's been good, but there's still been plenty of challenges.
19:33I mean, look, there is four or five meters seas.
19:37And every time those big waves comes, she lifts her skirt up and you just continue on.
19:43You, you can fall asleep in those conditions and, uh, and these high winds, the boat seems to handle it really, really well.
19:53You wouldn't think so on a 19 feet boat, but it does.
19:56Yeah.
19:57And you feel always safe, uh, uh, with the boat.
20:00Yeah.
20:01I, yeah, I agree.
20:03Um, do you think about John Goswell much?
20:05Well, uh, he's, he's, uh, obviously I read his book and he, uh, funny enough, his worst time happened was in the ocean.
20:13When, uh, uh, cyclone he was in, but his, his story is very much different than ours.
20:20He had a much longer time scale to do these things.
20:23Um, uh, and, uh, uh, I mean, what he did was wonderful, but what we are doing is entirely different than what he did.
20:32Yeah.
20:32Uh, and, um, similar, but completely different.
20:35I think so.
20:36Yeah.
20:36I mean, and also he did it because he wanted to do it and he did it on his own.
20:42He had no, uh, uh, anyone to compare, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, to go sailing with.
20:47He couldn't share his problems with anyone.
20:50There was no technology at the time.
20:52He had to fix everything himself.
20:54So his time was very different, very much harder in some, so many ways.
20:59Yeah.
20:59Uh, and, and I think he had a tougher time going around the world than we are because we have so much more that we are, uh, taking advantage of.
21:11Yeah.
21:11We're more aware and often fear is fear of the unknown.
21:14We sort of all sort of know even right back to him that he did it.
21:18So that means it's possible.
21:19You know, I mean, apart from one person, everybody's a starling.
21:22Everybody's connected to internet of some kind.
21:25So everybody's knows what's happening all the time.
21:27So we are in a, we can't really compare our journey to the John Guswell's.
21:32What he did was in his time was entirely different than what we are doing right now.
21:37Yeah.
21:37Yep.
21:38Too true.
21:38So if there's anything you could change on Trekker, if you were building and starting from scratch, what would, would, is there anything you'd change?
21:44Well, I think, uh, you'd like to have more electricity on board.
21:49Uh, and, uh, we are always very careful with our electricity consumption.
21:53And, and I mean, when there is sunshine, there's not a problem, uh, because you charge your batteries about six, seven hours during the day.
22:01That's all.
22:01You got about six hours, but if the wind is coming, if the, if, if the sails are covering the sun,
22:07you actually, you have much fewer hours to charge, charge your batteries.
22:12And if you don't have sun the next two days, you, you deplete your batteries.
22:16I guess if there is anything that I would like to have more is more electricity, but that's same with everyone.
22:22Uh, and I'd love to keep everything on all the time, but in real world, not many yachties can leave everything.
22:29Even if you're on a big boat, you can't just leave everything on all the time.
22:32You just don't generally, you don't regenerate electricity.
22:36Uh, and, um, so there is a much, you can, you can change really.
22:42I mean, you sometimes wonder about these, uh, electric outpours that we have, uh, and, uh, you know,
22:50I wish I had a three and a half horsepower over to three horsepower petrol engine, not because, um, uh, that you would go further with it, but I guess it costs one sixth, one eighth of this electric business that we are, we are, we have.
23:07It's very, very costly to run an electric engine and also it doesn't have enough oomph when you are going into a harbor, uh, and, um, but this is the rules.
23:18We are, we have, we have to have electric engines, so that's the, that's the, I love it.
23:21I mean, it won't change because the, the, the, the, the solar capacity matches the battery capacity and the battery capacity matches the solar capacity.
23:29And the idea is not to turn the boats into a Christmas tree.
23:32You know, if you go dark and you get no power, you can still keep sailing, you know, so there's a reason and even with the outboards, you know, it's all about outboard development and just to see what the reality is.
23:41Yes, it'd be good to have bigger.
23:42You can't get bigger, but then it uses more power and, you know, lots of issues there, but it's a bit safer.
23:47And so far we went into every single harbor.
23:49We came out of every single harbor, I guess this redundancy or this, that it's only will last you an hour or so that knowledge is, we are not used to it.
23:59Yeah.
24:00I think that is the disturbing part.
24:02Absolutely.
24:02And normally, but I, I mean, when I went into the Marquises Islands, I think the engine was only for there for a couple of minutes just to turn the boat around because we sailed it all the way in.
24:11Yeah.
24:11I sailed the boat all the way in and you know, when I arrived there, I had 92% battery power.
24:16Yeah.
24:17When I anchored, that is ridiculous really that I'm complaining about this as a problem.
24:21Yeah.
24:22I think that is partly because our, um, our insecurity more than anything else.
24:27Yeah, that's exactly.
24:28You've got to sail the boat knowing that you've only got a certain amount of battery, you know, so, yeah, that's cool.
24:33And obviously, when you do leave a place, um, the silence is wonderful.
24:38Yeah.
24:39I own an electric vehicle.
24:40And if you say to me, why would you have electric vehicle?
24:43Yes, I, I would purely because of the silence, not because it is cheaper.
24:48It is not, it costs twice as much as a petrol car.
24:51And when you stop in a petrol station, it costs you more than a petrol car to, to, to put electricity in and so on.
24:57But the silence of it is, is mesmerizing.
24:59Yeah.
25:00Yeah.
25:01Electric, uh, using electric power.
25:04It is, it is, it is something, you know, it is, it's a wonderful, I, I, um, it wouldn't suit everyone, but it is a good thing.
25:13Yeah, okay, so, uh, there's a, there's a guy out there, he's, uh, let's say 25, anywhere to 25 to 55, and he's thinking about the idea of building a 580, uh, doesn't know whether he'd do the MGR or anything like that.
25:28What, what do you think you'd suggest to him?
25:30I think it would be awful for him to say, I wish I'd done it as the years go on.
25:35I think to live your life and I should have done this, I should have done that.
25:40I think in any business, you should go for it, if you don't make it, you don't make it, at least you can say in years to come, I tried, I failed, but you must try it.
25:50Yeah.
25:51That's what I would recommend anyone, you should go for it and see what happens and at least you are never going to regret that you haven't tried to enter and it is a, it is a wonderful, once they start, they will experience something they will not have experienced otherwise.
26:08Yeah. So do you think you're doing this to prove something to yourself?
26:11No, I'm not. This is an adventure. I'm enjoying myself. Alternative is for me to be at work, working seven days a week. This is alternative.
26:18Oh, jeez.
26:19Uh, and, and I, I love, I adore work. I mean, you know, I'm a workaholic and, and, and this is an alternative.
26:25And, and, and, and, so I think I prefer to do this at this moment in my life than working, even though I, I have, I miss working a lot, I have to say.
26:35Yeah. Okay. So you're really doing it day to day, but there's an objective and it's to get to the finish. Do you think by the time you get to the finish, this whole deal might change you a little bit?
26:42No, no. I mean, I already think about the next adventures, you know, this is always in my mind, what I can do next, what I can, you know, what I want to do next and what I can do with the trekker.
26:53I mean, I'd love to do, take trekker into unsuitable territory of doing an all-star perhaps, you know, that route. And, and I don't know, they are the sort of thing that goes through my mind.
27:02Yeah.
27:03You know, and I can do things with, with trekker if, if I can't do something else or, or, you know, I'd love to do another GGR and all these things in my mind all the time.
27:13And, and, and, uh, when I return, uh, when this finishes, I will go and see how my health is. Uh, and then I will take it from, from there.
27:23Yeah.
27:23I think first we must have the health to continue doing these things.
27:27Health is everything, eh, for us young fellas.
27:29Yeah.
27:30Perfect.
27:31Okay. All right. So anything else you want to wrap up with anything you want to get across to anyone or something?
27:35Well, um, those people who wants to do it, they should go for it. Start at it. And, uh, you, you will find it, uh, a wonderful thing to do. It isn't say doing these things. It's not like going out sailing or doing a one week holiday or a planning, a journey, a passage plan to go into a hundred, 200, 500 miles away.
27:59Doing this is, is exciting because you, you, you have got a set day, you leave and you get lots of surprises on route.
28:07Take three. All right. That's good. Well done, Ayrton. And, uh, long way to continue. We'll look forward to seeing you at the start and, uh, we'll do this again in Cape Town, if not before.
28:18Cape Town.
28:19Yeah, absolutely. That'll be fun. All right. Good luck. Thanks for looking after the boat.
28:24Thank you.
28:24She's looking good. See you later.
28:26Thank you.
28:29Thank you.
28:59Thank you.
29:29Thank you.
