00:30Conditions here are often extreme. It's time for a week living on the edge.
00:35Qashqais can be relentlessly tough, physically and mentally.
00:40But it's a pretty, charming, historic, fashionable seaside resort close to Lisbon.
00:45It's the midpoint, the halfway stage of the five regattas,
00:48which comprise the world's leading Grand Prix monohull circuit, the 52 Super Series.
00:55There are four teams which have won the World Championship before,
00:58defending champions, are Gladiator.
01:01Platoon Aviation have three title wins.
01:03American Magic, Quantum Racing have already won seven world titles.
01:07But now it's a younger team and they're hungry for an eighth.
01:12But it's the 2021 World Champions Sled.
01:15Now, there may be the crew which have been most vocal
01:18in looking forwards to big days on the Atlantic.
01:21And they deliver on their words,
01:23taking the early lead in just the kind of conditions everyone wanted.
01:27Happy to be where we are.
01:28We'd be happy to be here than somewhere else.
01:31But there's a long way to go and a lot of different conditions to come.
01:35One team showing podium potential are the French on Paprec.
01:38But the Italian team, Alcido Vitamina,
01:41which is new to the circuit only this year,
01:43come to Qashqais fresh from a podium,
01:45a third place in Bayona.
01:47But Qashqais demands a whole new set of skills.
01:51It's a real bat to miser fire in Portugal.
01:53It's the first day in big waves of my life.
01:56So, to me, everything was new.
01:58Difficult, very difficult,
02:00because I'm new of the class, new of the boat,
02:02new of those waves.
02:03It's not easy at all.
02:05Lacorte comes from a background in one design classes,
02:08but he wants to test himself at the highest level.
02:11The T-52 Super Series has always been my dream,
02:15since many years.
02:16So I'm finally here.
02:17So to me, it's like a dream.
02:19It's like, oh, I finally got there.
02:21This kind of boat are unbelievable.
02:23They're tremendously fast, tremendously responsive.
02:26It's absolutely outstanding.
02:28So it's like being on a dream,
02:30and you finally wake up and say, oh, this is true.
02:34Portugal's local hero,
02:35four times 470 Olympian Alvaro Mourinho,
02:38who's a strategist in Alcido,
02:40alongside Cameron Appleton,
02:41he really is relishing the chance to race on home waters
02:44with a team which is a potent mix of different cultures.
02:47So far, it's been a very solid group,
02:50and we have been learning each other a lot.
02:53It's funny for the Americans
02:55to see how the Italians are playing,
02:59not just on board, but also off the boat.
03:02And they're just driving us into that mode.
03:06Very happy family, I would say.
03:08The first three days of the World Championship
03:11see three different teams topping the leaderboard.
03:13First Sled, then American Magic, and then Paprek.
03:17But Alcido sailed to a big win on day two.
03:20It's a really emotional moment for the team.
03:23Behind the scenes, La Corte's team are a close-knit group
03:26learning together on their first year on the circuit.
03:29The interesting thing and the philosophy of the team
03:31is there's a big focus on everybody working together
03:36and coming together,
03:38because that's the biggest skill set we have,
03:41is working together.
03:42We haven't got a lot of experience
03:44that some of the other teams have.
03:46For the Alcido team,
03:47success is what drives them forwards,
03:49but having fun is still key.
03:52There is one expectation, keep having fun,
03:54because if you keep having fun,
03:56for sure, you make a good regatta.
03:59Even if I know for sure that there's people here
04:01with more than five years,
04:03with more than 10 years sometimes,
04:05of experience in this class.
04:08The Italian team get a third on day three
04:10to climb onto the podium,
04:12but the French maintain a high level
04:14and actually they are leading the World Championship
04:16for their first time ever.
04:18Unbelievable.
04:19I mean, I had a message from Jean-Luc,
04:21what's going on?
04:22I can't come on board tomorrow
04:23because if I'm bringing bad luck on the boat,
04:27so it's worried to come.
04:28American Magic Quantum Racing
04:30and the French on Patprec
04:31are the most regular so far,
04:33but neither prove beyond costly errors.
04:36At the top mark of Saturday's third race,
04:38they come into the top turn locked in combat,
04:40but they've both run out of runway
04:42and have to bail out.
04:43A big costly error for both teams.
04:46At the same time,
04:47the Americans on sled are on a charge,
04:49winning race six in style
04:50and then bolting on two thirds
04:52to have their best day of the regatta so far.
04:54Al-Qaido streak to their second race win,
04:57the only team to do so
04:58over the course of the week
04:59and it's their fifth winning gun
05:01of the season so far.
05:03And going into the final day,
05:04they're knocking on the door of the podium.
05:06Once again,
05:07the world title goes down to the absolute wire.
05:10On a very breezy,
05:11a complex arena
05:12which has moved slightly into the river
05:14to shelter from the pumping winds out to sea,
05:17Sunday's finale has some casino moments.
05:19Chasing the French Paprec team
05:21through the line in the last race
05:23in seventh place,
05:24Doug DeVos American Magic team
05:26win the world title,
05:28Harry Melgis becomes the youngest helm
05:30ever to win
05:31and Sarah Stone,
05:32the first ever female navigator.
05:34It's always good to win
05:35and it's really good to win
05:36when you feel like
05:37you really had to work for it.
05:39So it's awesome.
05:40Today was probably the trickiest day
05:41of sailing I've ever had,
05:43but we came out on top by a point,
05:45which is all you can ask for.
05:46Super special.
05:48Harry and the guys
05:48did an incredible job today.
05:50It was a really challenging day.
05:52I think we'll look back at this week.
05:54I made the comment to Harry on the way in
05:55that I have two of these events
05:56that are more special than the others.
05:59And this win
06:00along with the win with Doug.
06:02Paprec are runners up
06:03and the Americans on sled third.
06:06That's a crew.
06:06That's a family.
06:07That's why we are efficient sometimes.
06:10And we were this week.
06:11A little disappointed, obviously.
06:13We came here to win,
06:15but we didn't.
06:15But look, we're happy
06:16because it's two years in a row
06:17we've been on the podium.
06:18So good result for sled.
06:20The Italians on Alcedo Vitamina
06:22struggle a little bit on the last day,
06:24but they finish fifth overall.
06:26You know, we push hard.
06:27We saw, well, we won some races
06:29and now it's just sort of
06:31closing that consistency down.
06:32But overall, really proud
06:33of what these guys did this week on board
06:36and the job that Andrea did.
06:38I mean, we pushed him as hard as we could
06:41in some really trying conditions.
06:42Rolex TV2 World Champions of 2025
06:47are American Magic Quantum Racing
06:48winning on 42.
06:50Second of the French team,
06:52Paprec on 43.
06:53Third are sled on 51 points.
06:55And in fourth, Phoenix on 60 points.
06:58Tony Norris of Phoenix,
06:59the best owner driver.
07:05And in August, we fight.
07:07Yes!
07:08Again, with pleasure.
07:09And in August, we'll see you next time.
