00:01:19So Andy shows up, mit seiner Harmonik-Sophistication.
00:01:23Und Sting starts writing these big songs, the sound of our own's beginning to hatch.
00:01:28The problem is, the Cognizanti are onto us.
00:01:31They know that we're just carpetbangers.
00:01:33I have a dark past with the long-hair group curved air.
00:01:37And Andy Summers has consorted for years with the enemy generation.
00:01:41We are unloved.
00:01:44But something strange is happening.
00:01:46A mysterious masked American has turned up in London for the couple of songs that got him a modest hit in the English charts.
00:01:52He goes under the name of Clark Kent, but no one knows who he is.
00:01:56He plays all the instruments, writes, sings, and produces the songs.
00:02:00So, since no one can think of anyone else who could do all that, they're starting to point the finger at me.
00:02:06Well, it's the first time I've ever been blamed for a hit of any kind, and I'm all for it.
00:02:10This is the big time at last.
00:02:12But it never would have happened like this for that known charlatan-the-police drummer.
00:02:18So the lesson is clear.
00:02:20The police needs to regain its virginity, to shed the leprous scab of its wretched history,
00:02:25to shake loose the chains and sally forth to the promised land of America,
00:02:29where people are kind of anticipating something new out of England.
00:02:32We've been together for two years, arriving in New York City with our gear as hand luggage.
00:02:39We're ready to start all over from scratch.
00:02:42My brothers, Miles and Ian, have hatched a scheme,
00:02:45where they are connecting up a string of clubs across America,
00:02:48where un-hippie, rebellious youth can be part of a brand new scene.
00:02:53It's 1978, and the hippie thing is way old.
00:02:56Everybody's looking at this new wave,
00:02:59which is actually mainly characterized by a new hairdo.
00:03:02Short hair is the dividing line.
00:03:05So Ian finds a club in every city,
00:03:08where we can play to the 50 or 100 kids who have heard of this new thing.
00:03:12And Miles makes sure the radio guys are there.
00:03:15Out on the road, it's the three of us in a van,
00:03:18with my childhood chum, Kim Turner, at the wheel.
00:03:21But things are picking up pretty quickly.
00:03:22There's a buzz about the van.
00:03:24Shows are filling up, and the clubs are getting bigger.
00:03:26Best thing about that is, roadies.
00:03:29Man, I am sick of carrying those dang drums around.
00:03:32It also means our sound is better, and we can play fresher.
00:03:35We're getting pretty good.
00:03:37Something about the way Andy hits those chords,
00:03:39and the way Sting pumps that bass, just lights me right up.
00:03:43And in the winter of 1978,
00:03:45just as America is beginning to notice us,
00:03:47and with pretty much the first spare change I have in my pocket,
00:03:51I got this Super 8 movie camera.
00:03:56Over near corner,

00:07:03Unlike meine Lunden-Sweaty-London-Pad.
00:07:04All we need to sustain our tour is an average of $300 a day to cover gas, food, and two hotel rooms.
00:07:14Cheap motels and chain hotels.
00:07:17But they provide a kind of revolving sanctuary.
00:07:19Check out of one, check into another.
00:07:34So we have your attention.
00:07:38We are proud to present A&M recording artists, the police, in the far corner of the store, here to say hello.
00:07:44Go on over and meet them.
00:07:46And coming on the turntable, their fantastic hit new album, Outlandos Damur.
00:07:51The police.
00:07:52Now we're on the turntable.
00:08:22We're on the west coast, and our buzz has preceded us.
00:08:24The magazines are sending out their star photographers to get the cover shots, and we have been officially designated Next Big Thing.
00:08:30We were signed by the London branch of A&M Records, and the American record guys are just discovering that we're on their roster.
00:08:48Stuart Copeland taking film of himself, narcissist.
00:08:52We're just bubbling up from the slide.
00:08:56But now they have jumped on it, and we have a national support team who have adopted our cause with an almost religious fervor.
00:09:04Oh, don't we sign us? Speak up.
00:09:09Oh, my God.
00:09:10Speak up or light up.
00:09:13Everybody has to take this first.
00:09:15This is New York in 1979, a couple years after we first arrived to Starvelings, playing at CBGB's in the Bowery.
00:09:41It's the nerve center of the music business.
00:09:44Everywhere we go seems to pass through this city, so this is where we've set up shop.
00:09:48Yeah.
00:09:49Well, the Stardust is probably just right for them, but the money was what was important,
00:09:53because the Santa Monica Civic can pay that six grand figure that makes the whole tour possible.
00:09:57And if they're doing the Stardust, then...
00:10:00What's this?
00:10:01Are you filming me? Have you got the rights?
00:10:03Have you got the rights to film me?
00:10:05Have you got a contract?
00:10:06You know that there's no filming on me, buddy.
00:10:09I've always noticed that Andy has this sort of benevolent look about him.
00:10:13How do you feel benevolent?
00:10:14I've never felt benevolent in my life.
00:10:17What's that mean?
00:10:17I've been told it's a genetic...
00:10:18What's that mean?
00:10:19What's that mean?
00:10:20What's your fucking benevolent?
00:10:21What a lot of respect out of you guys.
00:10:32Congratulations.
00:10:34Oh, this is talks.
00:10:35Number one, my favorite Copeland.
00:10:39You don't ask us why.
00:10:42You don't ask us why.
00:10:45We need the shelter in the sky.
00:10:49So they dance for his pleasure.
00:10:51With a joy you could never measure.
00:10:56They'd wait for him here.
00:10:58The same place every year.
00:11:01Beneath the shelter in the sky.
00:11:05We have a strange obsession.
00:11:07Fuck the fucking blimmer.
00:11:09Who wants the fucking...
00:11:10I'm out of here.
00:11:13Smiling.
00:11:14You're better off stage than you are in film.
00:11:17Let's go, Stuart.
00:11:18Kim Turner is the center of our life to the road.
00:11:21I was the tour manager of his first pro band.
00:11:24And now he's my tour manager.
00:11:26Every band has someone like this.
00:11:30Will you get off me?
00:11:32Will you get away from my face?
00:11:33He's always behind the wheel.
00:11:35He's the guy who always knows what we're doing next.
00:11:37Listen, I'm the fucking one which says what goes, right?
00:11:43And if fucking things don't go right, I get annoyed.
00:11:47I get fucking annoyed.
00:11:49So just fucking take that.
00:11:54Oh, yeah.
00:11:55What the fuck have you been?
00:11:57What the fuck have you been?
00:11:58Really?
00:11:59You know, I...
00:11:59Listen, man.
00:11:59If you're fucking playing in a band,
00:12:01if I can get your shit together,
00:12:02you're supposed to be on fucking time.
00:12:04You know what I mean?
00:12:05Don't be a fucking asshole all your life.
00:12:07Oh, God.
00:12:09For fuck's sake.
00:12:11Look at the state of this.
00:12:12Just look at this guy.
00:12:15Fuck you.
00:12:15I'm useless.
00:12:16I'm a fucking nightmare.
00:12:17I salute.
00:12:18I kill conversation as I walk into a room.
00:12:21I'm a freeline whip.
00:12:23I'm a sort of thin neighbor.
00:12:24I'm a walking disaster.
00:12:26I'm a demolition man.
00:12:29This is coming.
00:12:33I lose my life away.
00:12:39We started out as a band with a cynical plan,
00:12:48but our music is just welling up and taking us over.
00:12:51The excitement we create even surprises us.
00:12:53It's better than we deserve.
00:12:55We've landed on a groove which just seems to light everybody up.
00:12:58The thing is, you're missing the legs.
00:12:59You know, the legs are the most important future.
00:13:07So now we're back in Europe to do the summer festivals
00:13:09and TV.
00:13:10We're pretty low down on the billet these big shows,
00:13:13so we get to do the afternoon slots.
00:13:15Big bands get to play under a light show.
00:13:17New bands play in daylight.
00:13:24But we're getting less new every day.
00:13:26This is the Pink Pop Festival,
00:13:28where we're going to bag the whole country with this one show.
00:13:31We're going to pretty much conquer all of Europe this summer.
00:13:33What do we work?
00:13:36I'm good for you,
00:13:38so we're going to be.
00:13:38You know, the kids and family
00:13:39have to run through the day.
00:13:40And there's no books for that.
00:13:41Una馴 Thy让 has disappeared.
00:13:41And every one will have their way,
00:13:42you know they're back,
00:13:43for boys and every one we live.
00:13:43And every one will have to be.
00:13:45And we're going to be travelling soon.
00:13:46That way of thing,
00:13:46even if you've got started,
00:13:46go to the beginning of back네'll live right now,
00:13:48start it on the field.

00:17:03We first got attention in Germany as session players for Eberhard Schöner, a German composer.
00:17:12Now that we are back here, as Andy says, under our own steam, there is intense interest in our own little band.
00:17:33And we are back here, as we are back here, as we are back here.
00:18:03And we are back here, as we are back here.
00:18:33And we are back here, as we are back here, as we are back here.
