Breaking down the gut-bustingly good trailer for Deadpool the Third.
Transcript
00:00So, Marvel Studios damn near broke the internet in February when they released the first teaser
00:05trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine, but we didn't really see much of Hugh Jackman with
00:09his claws or anything like that, we just saw like a silhouette and a few little things
00:14of Deadpool shooting with his guns looking very, very cool.
00:17But now, after the release of the first full mega trailer, you know what they've done,
00:21you know what they've done, they've only gone and broke the damn thing all over again
00:25because, oh boy, this trailer is a doozy.
00:28And like any piece of Deadpool media, this is a visually very dense trailer with details
00:34in just about every single frame if you look hard enough for them.
00:37So, with that in mind, I am Gareth, this is WhatCulture, and here is the breakdown of the
00:42Deadpool and Wolverine trailer with every single hidden detail that we've found.
00:47Number 18, Hi Peanut.
00:49The trailer gets underway with Deadpool tracking Wolverine down to a Canadian bar where he's
00:54been, well, refused service because he's probably just had a little bit too much to drink.
00:58And what were the words that Wade used to greet Wolverine here in this particular situation?
01:03Hi Peanut.
01:04Okay, that's a choice.
01:05Big old fans of the MCU may actually recognise this particular nickname though because it's
01:09the exact same one that Scott Lang tends to use for his daughter Cassie Lang in the MCU.
01:14And it just looks like Deadpool's also a big fan of the MCU and just opted to take that
01:18particular nickname and go, yeah, I know that's going to work just as well for Cassie as it
01:22is for a big hairy man with claws.
01:25Yeah.
01:26And needless to say, this is not the last Ant-Man reference that was present in this
01:30particular trailer because there's a big one, a big, big, big one later on.
01:34Oh, and the opening shot of Wolverine, like from behind and you've got all the bar in front
01:38of him, that also seems like a little bit of a nod to the stills that we've had of the
01:42Wolverine video game that's on its way.
01:44I mean, even Hugh Jackman commented to a post that highlighted exactly that and also the
01:48fact that it's a great time to be a Logan fan with a hell yeah, so it looks like it
01:52was not a mistake.
01:53Number 17, 20th Century Fox.
01:56The initial teaser trailer provided a few glimpses of what appeared to be the Void.
02:01This is the place at the very end of time that was introduced in the Loki TV series and
02:05it's the place where it looks like Deadpool and Wolverine are going to be fighting at some
02:08point.
02:09And this new trailer gives fans another and slightly better look at the 20th Century Fox logo
02:14that's half buried in the ground in the middle of this war zone.
02:17And this seems to suggest that the film is definitely not going to hold back at all when
02:20it comes to just taking shots at any target in front of it.
02:23For those not in the know, Fox was the distributor for that original run of X-Men movies and the
02:29first two Deadpool movies as well, right up to the point that they were acquired by Disney
02:33around 2019 time.
02:34So expect many a dig at those old Fox days.
02:38Number 16, Repping Canada.
02:39It shouldn't really be that surprising that a film starring a proud Canadian like Ryan
02:44Reynolds would come with a lot of Canadian imagery, especially when you consider the
02:48fact that Wolverine is a proud Canadian too.
02:51Oh, Canada indeed.
02:53In the opening scene where Deadpool finds Wolverine, we see a lot of Canadian flags hanging up
02:57on the walls, we see ice hockey on television, it's all really just to establish the fact
03:02that we are in Wolvie's homeland here.
03:04And if that's not enough, during the arcing drone shot of the Void, if you look really
03:09closely in like the bottom right corner of the frame, you will see Toronto's iconic
03:13CN Tower just lying on its side, just completely destroyed as well.
03:18What the hell happened in Toronto?
03:19Number 15, Wolverine's Destroyed World.
03:22This trailer makes numerous references to Wolverine's world being destroyed, or in Deadpool's own
03:28words, that it went to S-Word.
03:30Now look, Wade Wilson may be allowed to swear in his trailers, but we're still not allowed
03:33on YouTube, okay?
03:34TVA agent Paradox more diplomatically states that Wolverine just let down his world.
03:39But beyond a brief shot of Logan just walking through a cornfield looking a bit sad, we
03:43don't really get much more context as to what went down on that world.
03:47Now there is a chance that this is possibly taking cues from the Old Man Logan comic,
03:51where Wolverine was tricked into killing the X-Men by Mysterio after being led to believe
03:55that they were a group of supervillains attacking the mansion.
03:58Whether the film will directly adapt that particularly horrifying storyline or not, though, remains
04:03to be seen.
04:04Number 14, The Yellow Suit.
04:06Oh baby, The Yellow Suit.
04:09Die-hard X-Men fans have been waiting almost an entire quarter century for it, but oh, we
04:14are finally here.
04:15We've got Hugh Jackman in yellow Wolverine spandex.
04:18Oh, it's a good time to be alive.
04:20Up to this point, the X-Men movies have typically avoided more comic book accurate and faithful
04:25designs for the costumes for something more sleeker and just cool looking, even though
04:31you look back on a few of those early X-Men movies and the all leather look is, well, it
04:34was a choice.
04:35But those days of leather look to be far, far behind us here.
04:39In the earlier shots in the trailer, Jackman is seen very much wearing his sleeve still
04:43with this suit, he's fully decked out in his nice yellow and blue suit.
04:47But then later on, he loses those sleeves and the muscles come out, you see all their
04:51biceps, and they are actually very much real biceps, even though some people online were
04:55quick to go, no, they look fake, they must be CGI or some kind of prosthetics.
04:59No, they are real.
05:00This Jackman got really jacked, man.
05:03The only major thing missing, well, if I was going to be picky, the winged mask.
05:07That'd be cool.
05:08We got the winged mask.
05:09That'd be amazing.
05:09But you never know.
05:10They could.
05:10They could still do it.
05:11Will they do it?
05:12You let me know in the comment section down below if you think they will.
05:15And also, while you're down there, just let me know what you think is the best ever superhero
05:19suit that's ever made it into a movie.
05:22It's probably the Daredevil one, right?
05:23It's going to be Ben Affleck in that Daredevil costume, that nice leather get-up with the
05:27red eyes and the horns.
05:28It's awesome.
05:29It's that one.
05:29It's definitely that one.
05:30Just put that in the comments down below.
05:32Number 13, go F yourself.
05:34At one point during this trailer, the superhero duo stop off at a diner for some coffee and
05:39donut, as you do.
05:41And this is where Deadpool asks his buddy, do you want to talk about what's haunting you,
05:45or should we wait for a third act flashback?
05:48Wolverine's typically no-nonsense response?
05:50Well, go F yourself.
05:52Never change, Wolfie.
05:53Now, this isn't merely an excuse for Disney to flex their R rating and show that we're
05:57definitely not getting a watered-down version of Deadpool 3.
06:00Rather, it's a nod to the most unforgettable moment to fall out of X-Men First Class.
06:05You remember the one where Magneto and Professor X go to a bar to try and recruit Wolverine,
06:10and what does he tell them?
06:11Yep, go F yourself.
06:12It's like it all came full circle.
06:14Lovely stuff.
06:15Number 12, Copperheads.
06:17When the duo leave that donut joint, if you look behind them, you can see a neon sign lit
06:22up that says Copperheads.
06:23This could very well be a reference to three different Marvel characters that have gone by
06:28the name of Copperhead at one point or another.
06:30But it's most likely Davis Lawfers, who was a Captain America villain who was also a member
06:35of the Serpent Society.
06:36Given that the next MCU film after Deadpool and Wolverine is going to be Captain America
06:41Brave New World, which is heavily rumoured to feature the Serpent Society, it's most
06:45likely not a coincidence that a member of the group is getting a sly name drop here in
06:49this movie.
06:50Oh, we see what you're doing, Marvel.
06:52We see you.
06:53Number 11, Liefeld's Just Feet.
06:55Easily the single best inside baseball gag that you're going to find in this particular
07:00trailer can be found when Deadpool and Wolverine are like walking in slow-mo across loads of
07:05storefronts, like they're walking in front of them, and then if you look behind, one
07:08of the storefront's signs just starts sparking.
07:11That store's name?
07:12Well, it's Liefeld's Feet, which is a nod to one of the co-creators of Deadpool, Rob Liefeld.
07:17No, Liefeld does not have a thing for Feet, actually, it's quite the opposite.
07:22As he himself has admitted that he's not very good at drawing Feet, so when he comes
07:26to, like, stage and position certain scenes, he tends to do it where, you know, the lower
07:31halves are pretty much cut off, so you don't have to look at the Feet.
07:34Now, this has been a long-running gag within the comic book sphere, and there was even
07:38a one-liner thrown into Deadpool 2 about it.
07:40And given Liefeld's general good humour about these ribbings, it wasn't really that much
07:44of a surprise when he took to X and just said, yep, I found that funny, that was a
07:47good joke, good stuff, keep them in.
07:50Number 10, Emma Corrin's Cassandra Nova.
07:52This trailer provides our first real glimpse of the movie's big bad villain, who is Cassandra
07:57Nova, played by the Crown's Emma Corrin.
08:00Though we don't really get much context at all when it comes to Nova's place in this
08:04story, it's clear that she's not really that impressed by the titular duo, and that
08:08she easily, absolutely destroys Wolverine just by, like, flicking him and moving him
08:13around, she batters the guy.
08:15And this is because, going by her comic book origin, she is actually the evil twin of Charles
08:20Xavier.
08:20Yep, that Charles Xavier, hence why she's got the old bald head going on.
08:25A parasitic lifeform who somehow managed to survive being killed in the womb by Charles.
08:29Cassandra is a genocidal maniac in the comics, and there's no reason to believe that she
08:34won't be pretty similar here.
08:35I mean, we can't make it too easy for our anti-heroes, can we?
08:38Number 9, Alioth.
08:39This is incredibly easily missed if you've not watched the Loki TV series in a hot minute.
08:45That mean-looking cloud that we get a second-long glimpse of in the trailer?
08:49No, it's not Galactus.
08:50No, that's Alioth, the transtemporal entity who also just so happens to be the guardian
08:56of the void.
08:57Given that Alioth typically devours anything or anyone that is sent down to the void by
09:01the TVA, we are presumably going to see it chasing after Deadpool, Wolverine, and just
09:06about anybody else who ends up in that void in this movie, including, presumably, the
09:1020th Century Fox logo, because it just hasn't suffered enough already, has it?
09:14And just a quick one to say thank you very much for watching this video today, and if
09:17you're enjoying what you're watching, then go down below, hit the subscribe button, and
09:21check out more WhatCulture videos.
09:24Number 8, Ant-Man is dead!
09:25Oh, we told you we'd be talking about Ant-Man again, didn't we?
09:29And my goodness, it looks like Cassandra Nova's base is Giant Man's head, skeleton, and all.
09:34That's right, Ant-Man, or at least a version of him, is dead here in this movie, and his
09:39rotted remains are now housing Nova's motley crew.
09:42It's one hell of a gnarly image for an MCU film, and it once again shows that we're definitely
09:46heading into more mature waters with this Deadpool and Wolvie movie.
09:50This wasn't actually a purely original creation for the film, though, as Giant Man's skeleton
09:55was seen in a memorably gross panel in the Old Man Logan comic.
10:00As for which version of Scott Lang this is, though, well, feel free to speculate in the
10:04comments down below.
10:05Number 7, Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, and more!
10:08The shot of Giant Man's skeletal remains is an absolute festival of cameos, I mean, look
10:14at them all!
10:14Though the image is just distant enough that it's only possible to really, really properly
10:19point out a few of them, like, officially go, yeah, that looks like they're there.
10:22So we can definitely see Lady Deathstrike in the frame, she's there, because you can see
10:26her claws coming out of her hands, I'm like, yep, I know you.
10:28And on her right, we can also see Azazel, who's pretty clear as well, because of his red skin
10:33and black suit, we're like, yep, that's Azazel.
10:35It looks like Pyro, who was also seen in that first trailer, is there too, it looks like he's
10:40just chilling there in the background.
10:42While we could, also, just going off what we can see here and just kind of speculating a
10:46little bit, we could also be seeing versions of Toad, Callisto, and then the Punisher's
10:51Russian.
10:51In case it somehow wasn't clear already, Deadpool and Wolverine is going to be an absolute cameo
10:56palooza, folks!
10:57Number 6, Mad Max Fury Road
11:00Amid the abject chaos taking place in the void, there looks to be a clear attempt to mimic
11:05the visual style and wanton carnage found going down in Mad Max Fury Road.
11:11All while Deadpool gets vocally giddy about being involved in a big slow-mo action sequence,
11:16you can't really blame him, can you?
11:17In one shot, we can see a collection of bikes just dragging along a tank, which again, feels
11:22like a pretty clear nod to something like the war rigs found in George Miller's masterpiece.
11:27And while nobody's really expecting this movie to top Fury Road when it comes to action
11:30sequences, because I mean, like, what movie can?
11:33This should still be a fun quasi-parody when paired with all the ridiculous cameos that we're
11:37probably going to get in this movie too.
11:38Number 5, Red Skull's Car
11:40Another shot from the big battle in the void shows off a rather familiar-looking, rather
11:46wacky vehicle.
11:47This is in fact the very same coupe once driven by Johann Schmidt himself, aka the Red Skull,
11:53in Captain America The First Avenger.
11:55Now, you would be forgiven for not immediately recognising it though, given that it's been
11:59given a few, er, modifications, let's call them.
12:02Some, some big fire decals on the front and sides, yeah.
12:05While we don't get a super clear look at who the driver is of this car in this moment,
12:09set photos have shown that Pyro is going to be sat in it at some point, so it's safe to
12:13assume it's probably him, because, you know, fire decals.
12:17Like, fire, it's probably him.
12:19But as for how that gorgeous piece of motor landed in the void in the first place, well,
12:24I don't know.
12:25You let me know.
12:25You speculate.
12:26Speculate down below.
12:27Number four, Dogpool.
12:29Ah, the MCU's already seen a lot of bonkers variants pop up over the last couple of years,
12:33haven't they?
12:33But this, this could be one of the, one of the greatest yet, really.
12:36Because in that wild spirit of crazy cameos and variants and whatever, it looks like Deadpool
12:42and Wolverine's gonna introduce us to Dogpool.
12:45And if you don't know who Dogpool is, well, have I got a story for you.
12:47Believe it or not, this Wade Wilson variant, Dogpool, did actually originate in the comics.
12:52And will appear in this movie rocking an adorable mini Deadpool costume.
12:56I mean, just, just look at that thing.
12:58It's adorable.
12:59And Dogpool is actually played by Peggy, who was last year voted Britain's most ugliest dog.
13:04What a cruel award that is.
13:05But they have evidently got the last laugh, because now they're an MCU superstar.
13:10I mean, what have you done lately?
13:11Number three, the Hulk's bed.
13:13Now give yourself a firm pat on the back if you caught this one, because this, this is not
13:17easy to spot.
13:17When we see Deadpool and Wolverine just hanging around in Cassandra Nova's base for a
13:22for a few seconds there in the trailer, if you look in the background, very briefly,
13:26you can see like a skull shape, like teeth shape thing in the background.
13:30Now this is actually the skull bed that the Hulk would sleep in during his time on Sakaar
13:35in Thor Ragnarok.
13:36That is crazy.
13:37The shape and tooth pattern, all of that is exactly the same as what it was when you
13:41go and look at it in that Thor 3quel.
13:43The Thra-quel.
13:45Thra-k.
13:45Thra-k.
13:45I'm gonna stop.
13:46But it's really not clear right now how that thing got there and how it even came into
13:50Nova's possession in the first place.
13:52Whatever the reason, Nova clearly has a worrying obsession with surrounding herself with skulls.
13:57You got Giant Man's skull, you got a skull bed, there's gonna be other skulls, maybe
14:01even Red Skull, we'll see.
14:03Number 2, Interdimensional Portals.
14:05This trailer climaxes with the duo seemingly escaping the void by jumping through an interdimensional
14:10ring, made by a sling ring.
14:12They're just jumping through.
14:13Now this isn't necessarily the most shocking thing in the world, given that portals do tend
14:18to pop up all over the place in the MCU.
14:20And look, plenty of characters have used sling rings up to this point, like even Ned in Spider-Man
14:24No Way Home, so a lot of people have done that.
14:27So it's not necessarily gonna guarantee here that we're gonna see Doctor Strange or Wong
14:31pop up in this Deadpool movie.
14:32I mean, we definitely could, but there's also a lot of other people that it could be too.
14:36But what is interesting here is how the contents of this particular portal appear to have been
14:40intentionally obscured by Marvel.
14:43Typically, when one of these portals does pop up, you tend to see where you're going.
14:46It like, shows you in the portal and then you jump through.
14:49But because that particular destination is no doubt spoilerific, they appear to have taken
14:53it out of the trailer, which is probably the best shout, isn't it?
14:56But oh boy, I wonder where they're going.
14:58Number 1, Do you want to build a snowman?
15:00The trailer's hilarious final gag sees blind Al invite Wade to have some nose powder with her,
15:06because why not?
15:07At which point, Wade warns her that the one thing that we're not allowed to do in a Kevin
15:11Feige Marvel movie is the powder.
15:13We're not allowed to do any nose powder.
15:14It's the one thing that was strictly off-limits in an R-rated Disney movie.
15:18Al then rattles off a string of slang words for the drug, ending with,
15:22Do you want to build a snowman?
15:23To which, as saddened, Wade replies, Yes, but I can't.
15:27This isn't just a drug reference, though.
15:28No, no, it's so much more.
15:30Because, of course, this is also a nod to the running gag found in Deadpool 2,
15:34where Wade realises that Do you want to build a snowman from Frozen
15:37sounds just like Papa Can You Hear Me from Yentl.
15:41And on that note, it's time to say, okay, bye.
15:44Be sure to head back to WhatCulture for more breakdowns when the next mega trailer no doubt drops.
