00:00:00All right, thank you, Armand. It's Collison and Warwick to get the championship game underway.
00:00:08Both tried to steal the tap. Warwick got the advantage.
00:00:13Billy, I would think the pace in this game is so critical, more than most that you see.
00:00:18Well, here's what we're going to see early on and certainly go forth.
00:00:21A young man who's had five games of late where he hasn't had a field goal.
00:00:25He didn't have a field goal in the semifinal, but he hits a basket right away.
00:00:29But trying to establish the pace here early, Kansas, against that 2-3, I would think it would be so critical.
00:00:35Well, they're packing things back in.
00:00:38And what I want to point out is two of the three players for Kansas are not good perimeter shooters.
00:00:43Hey, how about Syracuse, Sam? We can run.
00:00:46Hollison flips that one away, and it's Kansas' ball as McNamara went in for the layup.
00:00:51Jim, the first thing that I noticed on the first possession, Lankford is going to try to play Carmelo Anthony.
00:00:56He's given up about five inches. Anthony immediately took up the slack.
00:01:00We're looking at one of the really great freshman players who knows how to play the game.
00:01:04Nice hit.
00:01:05Graves from Collison.
00:01:06What do you think of that Lankford matchup against Anthony? Can he do it?
00:01:09It is not a good matchup size-wise at all for Kansas.
00:01:15And Anthony knows it, and look at where he's going.
00:01:17Down inside, much more than normal.
00:01:18Hakeem Warwick started on Saturday off the mark of this one, and Miles comes out for the Jayhawks.
00:01:27Thought about going to Heinrich.
00:01:29Look at how Syracuse got back.
00:01:30Now, if they're going to get back that quickly, that means they're not getting on the offensive glass.
00:01:37But they want to make sure Kansas doesn't beat them down court and get the numbers.
00:01:41Look at that defense, Jim. Packed in. Foul line.
00:01:44And Collison pinned underneath.
00:01:49It remains Jayhawk basketball with 13 on the shot clock.
00:01:52And it's obvious right away Jim Boeheim's going to say,
00:01:55I'm going to let you fellas take some three-point shots until I see you can make them,
00:01:59which is great strategy against a good three-point shooting team in Oklahoma.
00:02:02And they shut them down with the same strategy.
00:02:04Sounds like Heinrich will need a big night here for him.
00:02:07Absolutely. He has got to be the one of those primitive shooters to get high.
00:02:11First to the night. Airball.
00:02:13The Collison fouled from behind by Warwick.
00:02:18That was the Derek Wittenberg impression there.
00:02:21Perfect pass on an airball.
00:02:23For the Orangemen, it has been a Big 12 path to the championship game.
00:02:28With Manhattan and Auburn thrown in there for good measure.
00:02:31Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Texas.
00:02:33And now, remarkably, the fourth Big 12 opponent coming here in the title game.
00:02:38And couple that with a regular season win over Missouri,
00:02:43which was in a great streak that Syracuse had earlier this year.
00:02:47And they may be ready, if they can win this game,
00:02:50to maybe want that Big 12 championship title back in our side.
00:02:54And Anthony comes in after the show.
00:02:55Yes, they could be the Big 12 champs and the national champs.
00:02:58The Syracuse wins tonight.
00:03:00Anthony looks like he's going to take it to him.
00:03:02And stand outside to the other freshman.
00:03:04McNamara with the three.
00:03:05There's Kansas trying to push it up more, but you know what?
00:03:09If you look at it, Jim, Syracuse actually had the numbers.
00:03:12They had five men back farther down the court than did Kansas on that pass.
00:03:17More execution by Kansas.
00:03:19McNamara and Anthony, the two freshmen, leading the way for this team.
00:03:24McNamara again, 12 short, but Duaney runs it down.
00:03:28He'll fire one.
00:03:29And Miles collides with Duaney.
00:03:37Freshman for Syracuse helped lead the way.
00:03:39Freshman was more than 50% of the scoring for Syracuse.
00:03:43Here's Kansas and it's road.
00:03:44They had two teams try threes at the buzzer to force overtime.
00:03:48Utah State in a surprising tight first-round match in that Arizona regional final that was a good one.
00:03:55And what this defense does, it really takes away from Lankford's ability to slash inside.
00:04:00There he goes inside and makes it anyway.
00:04:03Surprising that he's able to get that off at 6'4".
00:04:06He started on Saturday with 23 against Marquette.
00:04:10Only missed three shots from the field at 14 attempts.
00:04:13Second best first half yet in a year.
00:04:15Arizona be in the other.
00:04:16Good backdoor cut by Anthony.
00:04:18Duaney is in the right place for the putdown.
00:04:21What I'm seeing so far is Kansas is putting so much attention on Anthony that everybody else is open.
00:04:28There's that 2-3 packed inside the foul line.
00:04:31And the lob way too high from Lankford.
00:04:34That's twice now Kansas has thrown it away.
00:04:35Roy Williams telling his team to settle down over there on the sideline.
00:04:39They're trying to go for home runs instead of attacking that zone patiently.
00:04:47Notice Anthony setting up down inside the lane.
00:04:53Outside 3-0.
00:04:55How pure.
00:04:56And what Lankford's going to have to understand.
00:04:58Anthony uses his head in his eyes to look you down.
00:05:02And then prepares that jumper.
00:05:04Beautiful pass.
00:05:05Scraving so quickly inside to Collison.
00:05:07And one.
00:05:08Obviously something Kansas has worked on.
00:05:10The high-low set against that zone.
00:05:13Trying to get the ball into the middle and then down inside.
00:05:16An excellent maneuver here.
00:05:18Right over four south stretch hands.
00:05:21Collison a great finish.
00:05:22Think of all the outstanding players.
00:05:25Legendary names who went through the Kansas program.
00:05:27And Collison second all-time score just reaching that mark here in this tournament.
00:05:34Second to Danny Manning in Kansas history.
00:05:36That's way for the France to move into that spot.
00:05:41Miles an excellent defender against the dribble.
00:05:44Lankford are feeling his pressure.
00:05:46Anthony on the baseline.
00:05:48Looking to shrug off Lankford again.
00:05:51Roy Williams was right.
00:05:52That was a double dribble he got by.
00:05:54Duaney on the shot.
00:05:56Duaney with the two and the three.
00:05:58Only made one field goal the other day.
00:06:01A couple of players contributing early.
00:06:04Fourth and Duaney who had really no offensive output on Saturday.
00:06:08And that's the foul on fourth.
00:06:10His second.
00:06:10Let me tell you something about Duaney.
00:06:13Syracuse is 21-1 when he hits double fingers.
00:06:17So if you're over there as an assistant coach, you say, get him the ball.
00:06:22Oh, he's halfway there with a quick five.
00:06:26And look at the zone again.
00:06:27See how far it's packed in.
00:06:29We know Miles doesn't want to take outside shots.
00:06:31There's a screen.
00:06:32Heiner wants that shot.
00:06:33Lankford saw it bounce off his knee.
00:06:36And Syracuse ball.
00:06:38Ball was slightly deflected.
00:06:39Heiner took Lankford's eyes off him.
00:06:43Heinrich now missed on two attempts from the outside.
00:06:46We saw that dreadful game he had against Duke only to rebound.
00:06:49Come up so large in the regional final out west against Arizona with 28.
00:06:53All right, he was 1-9 in that game.
00:06:55And 0-5 from 3.
00:06:56He can ill afford it.
00:06:57And there we see the pressure being put on the Kansas defense by Anthony.
00:07:04We've reached the under-16 timeout.
00:07:06The Orangemen have already hit three of the first four from three.
00:07:09Early edge to the Orange.
00:07:12You look at these two coaches, the winningest active coaches in Division I.
00:07:16And they are the two winningest coaches in tournament history who have not won a national championship.
00:07:22One coach will drop off that list here tonight.
00:07:26Pass.
00:07:27Lankford thought he denied it.
00:07:29But Anthony comes up short with the jumper.
00:07:30I think it's a good idea for Lankford to crowd Anthony, make him put the ball on the floor.
00:07:36He can't back off and give up that easy jump shot.
00:07:39Tomlinson stutter, step and drive.
00:07:41Soft catch.
00:07:43Wolf, not a great shot blocker.
00:07:45Tomlinson took advantage of it.
00:07:47Wolf likes to stand in there and just occupy space.
00:07:49Warwick sees an open lane and a block foul called against Kansas.
00:07:59That was a mistake on Collison to hedge out there on Duaney because it gave up an opportunity for Warwick inside.
00:08:05Here's that Collison drive.
00:08:06And C4th not going through any shot blocking.
00:08:09Stand still.
00:08:10Collison with his experience just slid around the side.
00:08:12Excellent move by Collison, the first-team All-American.
00:08:17And the whistle on the other end on Graves.
00:08:20Two for Warwick.
00:08:21And see, Collison should have stayed at home on that play.
00:08:24He cannot afford to give up.
00:08:26Heidrich can catch up on Duaney.
00:08:28And Collison stays solid on Warwick.
00:08:31Warwick's too good a player to let alone.
00:08:33They bring in more size.
00:08:35Some reinforcement with Jeremy McNeil from Syracuse.
00:08:39Hakeem Warwick, 18 against Texas.
00:08:42Really, that's the minutes that get played out of that center position between McNeil and 4th.
00:08:48It's almost one player, Jimmy.
00:08:49They don't really count on a lot of production from them offensively.
00:08:53They just try to use up to 10 fouls.
00:08:55Collison, quick jumper baseline.
00:08:57That's a good look.
00:08:58McNeil right into the game with a rebound.
00:09:00McNeil a much better shot blocker, however, than his 4th.
00:09:03At 8th in the Big East Tournament game against Connecticut.
00:09:078th blocks.
00:09:09Anthony again wanting to challenge Lankford.
00:09:12Lankford getting right in his chest now.
00:09:14I think that's a very good defensive maneuver by Lankford.
00:09:16Heedling a good inside player.
00:09:19A lot of strength.
00:09:21Heedling too strong.
00:09:22McNeil to save.
00:09:24And Heinrich.
00:09:25They say the ball touched the line first before Heinrich got a hand on it, so it's Kansas ball.
00:09:30Good smart play by a lot of players on that play.
00:09:33Heinrich tried to make that last smart play by keeping that ball alive.
00:09:37He had a layup.
00:09:38Right now, we're looking at the perimeter game of Kansas has not come through yet.
00:09:42And in Lankford and in Miles, they have two players this year that are averaging 27% between them from three-point.
00:09:49A holdoff by Collison.
00:09:50Collison with the strong hands.
00:09:53Two players draped on him.
00:09:54Gets it to go.
00:09:55He has 8th.
00:09:55And showed Anthony what some senior strength looks like on that play.
00:10:02Heedling in the game.
00:10:03And another strong freshman here at Syracuse.
00:10:06And there's the ballet dancer, Warwick.
00:10:11But he has some moves.
00:10:14His feet are so quick.
00:10:19You know Roy Williams would like to see Heinrich get started.
00:10:23And that's another Kansas turnover.
00:10:24They look a little tight to me early.
00:10:26Well, Jim, you've got to get some outside shooting against this zone to keep them honest.
00:10:30Otherwise, they're going to pack in so tight.
00:10:33Even with a great move by Collison.
00:10:34Collison, one hand to keep Carmelo Anthony away.
00:10:37Catching it one hand with the other.
00:10:40We have seen, whether it be right or left hand, Collison really has the soft hands in the crowd.
00:10:46Four turnovers for the Jayhawks here in the early going.
00:10:49McNamara.
00:10:50Three.
00:10:50Again.
00:10:52And there's Anthony.
00:10:53He throws Lee on the play.
00:10:56Lee tried to go ahead and help out.
00:10:58Too late.
00:10:58That matches the largest deficit of the entire tournament for Kansas.
00:11:02Eight.
00:11:03Lankford, though, slices it to six with that move.
00:11:06No one, and I mean no one in this tournament, has sliced through the 2-3 zone.
00:11:11Lankford's done it twice.
00:11:12I didn't think he could pull it off.
00:11:15And that's against a zone that's letting him take the outside shot.
00:11:19Look at this shot.
00:11:22Matt.
00:11:22Oh, my goodness.
00:11:25He has unbelievable range and unbelievable confidence for a freshman.
00:11:29He has hit three of them now.
00:11:31Nine points to put the Orangeman up nine.
00:11:37Kansas still going.
00:11:38The high-low they have not shown.
00:11:40They can hit an outside shot.
00:11:41They're still there.
00:11:42Up high, Lankford.
00:11:45We're going to count the basket.
00:11:49Surprised you how far out he was with this?
00:11:51No, Jim, because I've seen him do this throughout the course of the year.
00:11:54As a matter of fact, in this tournament as well, Oklahoma State, he made some threes.
00:11:59It almost seemed like he was closer to the half-court line than it was the three-point line.
00:12:03Unbelievable range.
00:12:04Knocked out by Collison.
00:12:10I really think that Syracuse should try to get Anthony the ball some inside.
00:12:15Put some more pressure on Lankford.
00:12:18To Boeheim was saying yesterday,
00:12:22I think so much whimsical.
00:12:23My offensive philosophy, get the ball to Anthony and get everybody else to get out of the way.
00:12:27Nice help that time by Collison.
00:12:30Anthony had beaten Lankford.
00:12:31Lankford seems like he's a little tired right now.
00:12:35He's grasping.
00:12:37Early in this ballgame, he's breathing very heavily.
00:12:40Michael Lee is in the Kansas lineup now.
00:12:43What a boost he has been all tournament long.
00:12:46Number 25 for the Jayhawks.
00:12:47Had a career-high 13 in a win against Marquette.
00:12:50And hit three out of three from outside.
00:12:53Exactly.
00:12:54He is the number one percentage shooter that they have on this team,
00:12:59even though Heinrich obviously has a lot more attempts
00:13:01and is a 43% career three-point shooter.
00:13:04And he's over 50% on the season.
00:13:06Warwick in the paint.
00:13:08Taking a count to the basket and set him to the line.
00:13:11But a mellow Anthony showing that he can overpower Lankford any time within 12 feet.
00:13:16And I really think early in this ballgame, this is where he can be so effective.
00:13:22And if you're a Kansas fan, Billy, the man you always hold your breath with as far as foul trouble,
00:13:28Graves has picked up his second here seven and a half minutes into the game.
00:13:32Talked about him early in some of the keys to this basketball game.
00:13:36Roy Williams' bench is so short.
00:13:38And when Graves gets in foul trouble early, it really makes it even shorter.
00:13:43Then he can't start resting some people.
00:13:46So Collison could be looking at a 38-minute game.
00:13:50So put Anthony on the board.
00:13:52And there is the block inside of Nash.
00:13:55Warwick, beautiful block.
00:14:01Anthony Peinrich on him.
00:14:04He lands the open man, Edelon.
00:14:05Jim, this young man understands how to play the game.
00:14:11Heinrich trying to get started.
00:14:13Now Kansas needs a timeout before the next possession.
00:14:16Well, they're going to get it right back.
00:14:18Turnover on the outlet pass.
00:14:20But Kansas finds itself 12 down.
00:14:24McNamara hurt his hand, Jim, on that play.
00:14:2813-4 runs with accused of lead by a dozen.
00:14:33Watch McNamara here, Billy.
00:14:35Well, you said it looked like he may have gotten injured here.
00:14:39He came out of here holding his hand.
00:14:42Really went into that scorer's table.
00:14:45Here you can see it.
00:14:47Roy Williams taking a look at him.
00:14:48Great sportsmanship on the part of Roy.
00:14:52Jerry enjoys McNamara.
00:14:54They've been to all the games, driving from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
00:14:56Watch their freshman star play.
00:14:58The freshman son almost comes up with the theft.
00:15:00Only the strength of lead kept that from a break for Syracuse.
00:15:11Heinrich driving.
00:15:12In and out.
00:15:13It's been a real struggle for him.
00:15:15But Heinrich has got to get himself an easy basket.
00:15:19McNamara.
00:15:20Strong McNeil on the follow.
00:15:22And Collison tugs it down.
00:15:26Kansas trying to get the break, but look at who's waiting on him.
00:15:29Syracuse.
00:15:30And this is...
00:15:30I'll tell you, McNamara hurt that hand again, Jim.
00:15:33He is really grimacing over on the sideline.
00:15:37Near the conclusion of every NCAA tournament game, we'll select a Chevrolet Most Valuable Player from each team.
00:15:42To date, Chevrolet has contributed more than $8 million to the general scholarship funds of America's colleges and universities.
00:15:49Nash at the line for two.
00:15:51I think we're going to see Gary having to go out of this ballgame.
00:15:55He doesn't want to leave the game, but that's twice now.
00:15:58He unfortunately got his hand in the wrong place at the wrong time.
00:16:02Josh Pace comes in and replaces McNamara.
00:16:07Sophomore from Griffin, Georgia.
00:16:08Pace has had strong showings in the tournament.
00:16:10Fourteen against Auburn.
00:16:12Bayheim said he hit the big shot against Texas on Saturday.
00:16:16He came in with that left hand and right off the bat scored without even getting loose.
00:16:21Had one late in the game he thought was the key of the coach.
00:16:28That's Evelyn.
00:16:31Beautiful work.
00:16:32Very tough to match out of it.
00:16:34Evelyn extremely strong.
00:16:36He's a lot like Lee.
00:16:37He's got that powerful body.
00:16:38He takes guards down inside.
00:16:42Pirate missed his first five.
00:16:44Tough to shoot over Warwick.
00:16:46Hollison between two defenders and off Syracuse.
00:16:50You can see right now, Jim, that I think Kansas is reluctant to work on their outside game.
00:16:55It doesn't look like they have confidence in the outside shot at all.
00:16:59And as I said, two of their three perimeter shooters on the year, 46 for 171.
00:17:03That's Miles and Lankford going out of there now.
00:17:06That will not get it done.
00:17:07Anthony read the inbound.
00:17:09Three on one and up the pace for the two.
00:17:12Roy Williams needs a timeout and he is going to take it.
00:17:15His team is not showing confidence on the perimeter.
00:17:18Too much pressure on the inside.
00:17:20Syracuse.
00:17:22Fifteen in front.
00:17:23The M.O.P. of that 82 championship team from North Carolina
00:17:31and one of the seven announced today in the 2003 class
00:17:35for the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
00:17:37There's a little bit.
00:17:37Roy Williams, an assistant coach with that team.
00:17:41Right now you can see Kansas trying to go inside, inside, inside,
00:17:45showing nothing on the outside.
00:17:47Hollison gets it back, working hard, no call.
00:17:50It's going back to Kansas, though.
00:17:52Last touch by the Orange.
00:17:53There goes long wingspan arms of Warwick, getting a piece of Collison.
00:17:57Even on the jump, Warwick was basically flat-footed on the defense.
00:18:01Again, Kansas is going to have to show they can make a jump shot.
00:18:04Well, that zone is going to keep packing in, packing in, and there will be no spacing whatsoever for Kansas on the drive.
00:18:11Back out to Heinrich.
00:18:20Nothing there for him.
00:18:22And last touch by Kansas.
00:18:24Collision that time.
00:18:25Edlin got hit right in the head, down on the floor.
00:18:28So, Jim Boeheim can ill-afford that.
00:18:30He already has one guard on the bench with some injury problems.
00:18:35Again, see Kansas, Jim.
00:18:37They're trying to go inside, inside, inside.
00:18:39They're trying to play inside 15 feet.
00:18:42You see the clash of the heads right here.
00:18:45Collison, the bigger the two, didn't feel any ill-effects.
00:18:48Wasn't sure this was touched last.
00:18:50Well, no, Heinrich.
00:18:51I thought maybe either one got a hand in there with the right call.
00:18:54Again, Lankford back on the floor for Kansas.
00:18:58And a hold called to Lankford right away.
00:19:01And Carmelo Anthony smiles because he knows what Lankford's trying to do.
00:19:05He's trying to go ahead and body him up and force him to put the ball on the floor.
00:19:10Anthony just so relaxed out there on the floor.
00:19:13Understands the game so well, taking advantage of that size.
00:19:16What a nice steal by Miles.
00:19:21But look at Syracuse.
00:19:22Again, back down the floor.
00:19:24Heinrich at last.
00:19:25Finally.
00:19:28Big three for the senior from Sioux City, Iowa.
00:19:32We're talking about the career three-point shooter, Kansas history.
00:19:36And he is going to have to come up huge if they're going to come back.
00:19:41Will the first be the start of something?
00:19:44Anthony shut down this time.
00:19:45Gets it right back.
00:19:46See where he gets it back in a little closer.
00:19:49And that makes him have so much advantage over Lankford.
00:19:52How smart.
00:19:53So easy and smiling all the way.
00:19:55And it's not smiling to make the opponent look bad.
00:19:58I think he's got a little magic Johnson in him.
00:20:00You know, he just looks like he's done a lot of fun out there.
00:20:02I talked to him yesterday.
00:20:03He smiled.
00:20:04Well, I said, the ball was smiling.
00:20:06People are really attracted to him.
00:20:07He said, I smile even when I'm in a bad mood.
00:20:10Can't beat Dan.
00:20:12Tomlinson almost had a strip.
00:20:14Didn't have it in his hands for the shot.
00:20:16Graves is back on the floor for the Jayhawks with the two fouls.
00:20:19Syracuse has had more situations where they have better numbers on the break than Kansas so far.
00:20:24Kansas doesn't have one fast break point.
00:20:28Anthony short this time.
00:20:30A little better job by Lankford.
00:20:32Making him put it on the floor.
00:20:34McNamara's coming back in, Billy.
00:20:36And early, he provided the firepower for the Orangemen.
00:20:39Great range shooter.
00:20:42And you can see, whenever you try to double on Anthony, McNamara knows how to go and find an open spot.
00:20:49Again, trying to go inside out.
00:20:51Heinrich, two straight perhaps.
00:20:53Yes!
00:20:53Good looking follow through by Heinrich on his shot.
00:20:56Warren couldn't get there in time.
00:20:59Good sign for Kansas.
00:21:00Yes, Kansas feels complete when that's working.
00:21:05But very telling what you said.
00:21:07No fast break points after what we saw.
00:21:09The running Jayhawks of Saturday.
00:21:11Now, why Syracuse pulled this out.
00:21:13Kansas went to a 1-3-1 zone.
00:21:15Something that Arizona did so effectively against them.
00:21:17Collison's running the baseline.
00:21:19McNamara again.
00:21:21That eliminates the point zone a little bit.
00:21:24Nothing wrong with those wrists.
00:21:26Miles quickly at the other.
00:21:28Graves waits.
00:21:29Gets it.
00:21:30Now, why they're in a zone is because Graves had to come back out on the floor with this deficit.
00:21:35But he's got the two fouls on him, Jim.
00:21:36And what Roy Wade is trying to do right now is to protect him in this 1-3-1 zone playing right in the middle.
00:21:43Graves is going to have to really move his hands and be thinking as opposed to picking up another cheap foul.
00:21:49So, Syracuse, the team that plays his own, now has to play against his own.
00:21:56Anthony.
00:21:57Wow.
00:21:57Nifty move.
00:21:58Look at Syracuse hustle back down the court.
00:22:01Once again, they're back faster than Kansas could beat them down.
00:22:04Great sign of coaching there by Syracuse.
00:22:08Collison, one bounce and a reach in on McNeil.
00:22:14Jim, so many times, one of the basic things you want to do against his own defense is beat it down the floor.
00:22:20That's why I give Jim Bay so much credit to have a zone that can get back for defensive balance.
00:22:24Ten for Anthony.
00:22:27Also a six assist.
00:22:30Jim Nance, Billy Packer here in New Orleans.
00:22:32And you look at Syracuse from three.
00:22:33It's hit its last five from behind the arc.
00:22:36How hard is it when you're this many down to come back against a zone team and a team that's playing as well as Syracuse right now?
00:22:43Well, Jim, it is very difficult, obviously, because you're a team that wants to push it.
00:22:47But right now, we've seen that Syracuse, with great defensive balance, has taken away what Kansas likes to do and where they score in bunches best.
00:22:54And that is in their fast break.
00:22:56Syracuse has given up zero fast break points in this half, which is tremendous against a team like Kansas that breaks so well.
00:23:04Heinrich rejected cleanly.
00:23:07You're running right into a seven-footer as Heinrich, and again, I think that Kansas has got to go back and show Syracuse
00:23:15that they can make some outside shots to extend that defense.
00:23:26Out on the floor right now, Heinrich is the only pure shooter that Kansas has.
00:23:32Good passing here, Graves.
00:23:34Collison on the follow.
00:23:35Oh, little two-man game inside.
00:23:39I think Kansas has the perfect answer for Syracuse's zone with their inside game.
00:23:43They just have not been able to extend the floor with their perimeter game.
00:23:47The inside games work well.
00:23:48Absolutely.
00:23:51And Kamara.
00:23:52Oh!
00:23:53Off balance.
00:23:55I guess that wrist is really hurting him.
00:23:59And Miles had good defense on that shot.
00:24:02He was right in his face.
00:24:05This Scranton freshman is a scrapper.
00:24:10Time for the pie.
00:24:11Tipped up by Graves.
00:24:13Kansas attack, attack, attack.
00:24:15That's what Roy Williams wants.
00:24:17The problem is he hasn't been able to stop Syracuse, no matter what the defense.
00:24:20He went to the 1-3-1.
00:24:21Now he's back to man-to-man.
00:24:22Blaney stepped in, too.
00:24:28Everything coming up right for Syracuse.
00:24:30They are really looking good at both ends of the floor.
00:24:32Boy, they are shooting.
00:24:34Lights out here.
00:24:357 out of 8 from 3.
00:24:37Good job by Pace.
00:24:42Going out there and forcing Heinrich to put it up quickly.
00:24:46Wanker doesn't want the shot.
00:24:50Miles in the paint.
00:24:52Surrounded by 7-footers.
00:24:54Liner goes inside.
00:24:56Fourth to Liner with him.
00:24:57No call.
00:25:01Duaney with a 3.
00:25:03Nifty pass to McNamara.
00:25:05And Duaney feels like this game is over.
00:25:08He needs to get back in concentration.
00:25:10But what a night he's having.
00:25:11He's got his 10, Billy.
00:25:12You talked about Duaney in double figures.
00:25:1521-1.

00:25:28Jim, one of the things that Jim Boeheim talked about
00:25:31was how incredible his defense played against Oklahoma.
00:25:35Then the other day against Texas,
00:25:37and my defense didn't play well, but my offense played well.
00:25:40Tonight, he's getting both ends of the floor executed
00:25:44as well as I've seen Syracuse do that in any game this year.
00:25:48Tremendous first half on their part.
00:25:50One more for Langford, and with Anthony out of the lineup,
00:25:55just a brief break, the Orangemen increased their lead by four.
00:25:58More on that about their offense.
00:26:00Boeheim was saying they did not have a single good offensive game
00:26:04the first four games of the tournament.
00:26:05If they didn't have one against Texas like the one they had,
00:26:08he was pleased with it.
00:26:09He said they would have lost by 15 to the Longhorns.
00:26:11And it is all go here tonight.
00:26:16I think they have surprised Kansas on the offensive end.
00:26:20I think Kansas prepared for what they're going to do on the defensive end.
00:26:24McNamara not this time.
00:26:26Got fouled on the arm on that play.
00:26:28No call.
00:26:28And it rolled right off the back of Heinrich.
00:26:31And Anthony knew it.
00:26:33McNamara was right.
00:26:34He got fouled on that play.
00:26:35And he almost looks at the referee and says,
00:26:38Hey, ref, let me explain something.
00:26:39When I shoot an air ball, somebody followed me.
00:26:41Otherwise, it's going close.
00:26:44Delaney.
00:26:46Run to the rim.
00:26:47Hollison.
00:26:49He tried to go for a break, but look what happens.
00:26:52The numbers are in Syracuse's side.
00:26:55Not good play at all by Kansas.
00:26:57They're trying to force it.
00:26:59But Syracuse doing a great job getting back on defense.
00:27:01The largest deficit Kansas was able to overcome all season long.
00:27:05Now, this is a team that won 30, lost 7.
00:27:08They came back from 12 in that thrilling regular season game against Texas.
00:27:13Came back from 12 to win.
00:27:14We saw them come back against Oklahoma,
00:27:17but just ran out of gas at Oklahoma,
00:27:19where they did lose the ball game.
00:27:21Nice double team here.
00:27:26Step in.
00:27:27Give it up for it.
00:27:29Follow up.
00:27:30Yes, Delaney.
00:27:31They're going to take the basket away.
00:27:33And the reason for it is basket interference,
00:27:36offensive basket interference on the rim.
00:27:39Watch this.
00:27:40The ball will be on the rim.
00:27:41Watch them play with the rim first.
00:27:43And there it is.
00:27:44Hanging on and playing with the rim while the ball is in the cylinder.
00:27:49Good call.
00:27:50Skip pass miles.
00:28:0025% shooter from three.
00:28:02But you're skip passing over to a person that doesn't want to take the jump shot.
00:28:06That doesn't help.
00:28:07If you're going to skip pass, you've got to skip pass to Heinrich.
00:28:09And doesn't have the average.
00:28:10Right.
00:28:13Clef Duaney followed up to get his night going.
00:28:17Then started working outside.
00:28:18Well, the last real big game that Duaney had was against Georgetown in the Big East Tournament.
00:28:25He had 16 in that ball game against Connecticut.
00:28:28He was just 2 for 10 when they lost in the Big East Semifinals.
00:28:32It hadn't been for Connecticut.
00:28:33Syracuse probably, Jim, would have been in the top 10 most of the year.
00:28:37But Syracuse, I mean, Connecticut had their number.
00:28:40Huskies had them twice.
00:28:42That foul was on McNamara, his first.
00:28:44Lankford front end.
00:28:46Back end as well.
00:28:47The 101.
00:28:49It was a top out of the ball.
00:28:51Slime all the time.
00:28:53Even in a bad mood.
00:28:54And the Big Easy loves everything.
00:28:57Melo.
00:28:57Kentucky was a 2 when it defeated Utah, a 3 in the 98 final in San Antonio.
00:29:05Fourth Big 12 opponent for Syracuse with the ball, leading 47-33.
00:29:10Of course, Kentucky, the last team that stopped Jim Boeheim from being a national champion.
00:29:14In that particular year, Jim Boeheim beat Kansas in the regional final to get to the final four.
00:29:21What a game that was in 96.
00:29:24Nice save by Heinrich.
00:29:27But look at 3-on-2, the numbers in Syracuse's favor.
00:29:31Again, Kansas cannot deliver on a fast-break opportunity.
00:29:36Dwayne can't believe that calls against him.
00:29:38Coming up, singular at the half.
00:29:40Greg and Clark and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo with complete first-half analysis.
00:29:45Plus, Dick Inbert will take a look at head coaches Jim Boeheim and Roy Williams.
00:29:48As they make this attempt to enter the elite championship fraternity, all coming up.
00:29:53Singover at the half.
00:29:54Langford at the line.
00:29:55Jim, a lot of coaches that are scouting this Syracuse team who want to learn how to play the zone.
00:30:02One of the things that I think you'd really want to look at over and over again is how does Boeheim get his team back on defense so well
00:30:10that they actually have the numbers on you when you're breaking.
00:30:14And against Kansas, you're seeing a great example of that defensive balance of this terrific zone.
00:30:20Langford tries his first three of the night.
00:30:23Graves at the putback.
00:30:24Graves and Patterson getting it their way at times inside.
00:30:27And look out.
00:30:28Anthony is limping.
00:30:29Graves showing that great strength inside.
00:30:33Graves has eight for Kansas.
00:30:35Nice little comeback here by Kansas.
00:30:38Oh, and they tie him up.
00:30:39And the arrow to Kansas.
00:30:41Nice comeback.
00:30:45Anthony thought he had the size to hold that ball over his head.
00:30:49Kind of surprised him a little bit.
00:30:52You're talking about that 96 matchup.
00:30:55Kansas and Syracuse.
00:30:56That was out west.
00:30:57And that was a thriller.
00:30:59Syracuse going on to the final against Kentucky.
00:31:03Rissettino's championship.
00:31:05A 60-57 ball game.
00:31:09When you think back to that final four, you always think about Kentucky, how great they were.
00:31:12Massachusetts was the highest-seeded team coming in there.
00:31:15Highest-rated, number one in the country.
00:31:17The candy.
00:31:17Langford this time looking a lot like what we saw against Marquette.
00:31:22Jimmy Bayheim has got to be concerned if Kansas is a team that looked like they were going to get blown out of here.
00:31:27They can get this thing down under double figures.
00:31:29It's a little eight-point run here, Billy.
00:31:37Intensity has definitely stepped up on this end, too.
00:31:40Miles wanting to challenge McNamara.
00:31:42Which way will it go?
00:31:43Basket goes.
00:31:44They're going to call it in charge.
00:31:46It didn't look like McNamara was moving.
00:31:48No, I've got to say that call should have been a basket and a foul on Syracuse.
00:31:55Roy Williams has reason to be concerned.
00:31:57Watch this.
00:31:57McNamara never is in defensive position.
00:32:00You have to establish the defensive position.
00:32:03Then you can move.
00:32:04But you can't move under without having it established.
00:32:07He never got it established and squared up.
00:32:09Missed call there.
00:32:11Wow.
00:32:12And a big miss call.
00:32:13Because it also would have been the second on McNamara.
00:32:16Miles would have been going to the line for a three-point play to shave it to seven.
00:32:21A calming effect here.
00:32:24Hey, here.
00:32:25Anthony with the ball.
00:32:25Yep.
00:32:26This is pretty calming, too.
00:32:28McNamara with another three.
00:32:29And he is moving in on the all-time title game three-point mark.
00:32:34Seven made by Steve Alpert here in 87.
00:32:38Dave Seeger of Oklahoma.
00:32:40Tony Delk with seven.
00:32:41And here comes the orange again.
00:32:42McNeil on the block that time.
00:32:45Fourth of McNeil causing a lot of problems down there in the center of the two-three.
00:32:50The calming effect.
00:32:51Nothing here.
00:32:52Graves.
00:32:53Quick release.
00:32:54Heinrich.
00:32:54McNamara.
00:32:55Challenged again.
00:32:56And that's the first easy-two breakaway-two, if you will, fast-break-two of the ninth.
00:33:02But McNamara has hit six threes in his first half.
00:33:06You're talking.
00:33:07Look at an 11-point game.
00:33:08There's 18 points coming from one factor.
00:33:15You couldn't believe that.
00:33:16What is Gantz?
00:33:16When Alpert hit the seven to set the record.
00:33:19Right here in the Superdome.
00:33:20Edelman short.
00:33:22Miles comes out with it.
00:33:24On the wing, Langford, and...
00:33:27Oh, man, Anthony drags him down.
00:33:30But he did hold him on the way down.
00:33:32Nice sportsmanship that time by Carmelo Anthony.
00:33:36How quick was that?
00:33:37Well, I know you've really hit him hard, and now you have also.
00:33:41He was going for ball to start off with there.
00:33:43I think that is really good sportsmanship on his part.
00:33:45No question.
00:33:47He was going for the block, and then he realized that he could get in trouble and help go right
00:33:52down to the floor with him.
00:33:53Nice job.
00:33:58First on Anthony.
00:33:59Hold on.
00:33:59They're going to call that...
00:34:00Blagard foul, Billy?
00:34:04Oh, I don't think so.
00:34:08They're calling it intentional.
00:34:10Intentional foul.
00:34:11I don't buy it at all.
00:34:12I think initially Carmelo Anthony was going up for the block, and then the only time he
00:34:17grabbed him was on the way down to stop the fall.
00:34:20So it's two free throws, ball out, and possession for Kansas.
00:34:29Oh, now Carmelo Anthony is doing a little mouthing down here, and he needs to stay away from that.
00:34:36He and Miles going after each other.
00:34:41Pace in McNeil-Own.
00:34:43Well, that may even things up a little bit from that call we saw before.
00:34:47I thought that was not the intent by Anthony at all.
00:34:57So we have six threes by McNamara and one by the whole Kansas team.
00:35:02Is that what we have?
00:35:03Heinrich has, too.
00:35:04Yep.
00:35:04Another big man to back threes.
00:35:06Set up for another look.
00:35:07Oh, Anthony closes in on him.
00:35:09Poblison tip up and around.
00:35:12Lee's in the game.
00:35:14So strong, isn't he?
00:35:15So great.
00:35:16Oh.
00:35:17And he tried to hit Heinrich from the outside.
00:35:20Graves has passing ability, but he turns the ball over when he tries to make too big a play.
00:35:26This year he has 32 assists, 62 turnovers.
00:35:30It's not that he can't pass.
00:35:31He makes some bad judgments.
00:35:34Final 40 seconds of a thrilling first half.
00:35:37It's been controlled.
00:35:39Foul to give here.
00:35:40So they should play really strong defense, try to make a steal on this play, not worried about picking up another foul.
00:35:46It's been controlled by Syracuse, Kansas, led for all of 11 seconds.
00:35:50I don't know if the players realize this, but they should go and try to steal.
00:35:55Down to 10 on the shot clock, seven-second differential.
00:35:58Anthony over Collison this time.
00:36:00Oh, that was not a good play by Kansas.
00:36:03They had a foul to give, go out and try to make a steal.
00:36:07Heinrich with five.
00:36:09Collison reverse.
00:36:10Nice move.
00:36:12We have reached halftime in the Superdome.
00:36:16And Syracuse behind Jerry McNamara's 18, six three-pointers for the mayor of Scranton.
00:36:25And Syracuse leads it, will continue for New Orleans in a moment.
00:36:30Kansas has out rebounded, the Orange plus five.
00:36:34Kansas had a nice run, though, to get themselves back into the ballgame
00:36:37in a very important first three minutes of this second half.
00:36:41And Syracuse continue to establish their dominance.
00:36:43Up and down, and that goes back to Kansas.
00:36:49That's what you're talking about.
00:36:50Look at this.
00:36:50Yep, there it is.
00:36:51He suffered a lower back strain in the game against Texas here on Saturday.
00:36:56And you can see that that is heavily taped.
00:37:00But he got a lot of stretching right before he went out to shoot around.
00:37:04Again, reluctant to take the jump shot is Kansas.
00:37:07Again, reluctant to take the jump shot.
00:37:14Lankford has got to understand they're letting him shoot.
00:37:17Traveling there.
00:37:18Let's go to Armand Kataan.
00:37:20Jim, regarding Carmelo Anthony, I talked to the people on the bench for Syracuse.
00:37:23They say he's okay.
00:37:24This is somewhat normal stretching for them,
00:37:27but they're telling me there's nothing wrong with him at this point.
00:37:29Back to you.
00:37:31But then why do they put Tate halfway up his back?
00:37:33That's an answer that I don't accept.
00:37:36Here comes the break.
00:37:37Maybe.
00:37:38Heinrich over.
00:37:40And the foul called on Syracuse.
00:37:43This will go against Warwick.
00:37:45Very positive sign for Kansas to get out
00:37:48and finally get three-on-two numbers against the Syracuse team
00:37:52that beat them back down floor in the first half.
00:37:5647-29.
00:37:58Largest lead of the first half.
00:38:01It was 11 at the intermission.
00:38:02Best comeback ever.
00:38:04Those comeback cats.
00:38:051998 beating Utah.
00:38:08Ten down at the half.
00:38:09Let me ask you this, Billy.
00:38:10All this emphasis on getting back Syracuse,
00:38:14running back to the other end to get back defensively.
00:38:17Any chance we'll see fatigue late in the game.
00:38:19I don't really think so.
00:38:20I think, again, we get back to coaching,
00:38:22and one of the things that wasn't unusual for Syracuse to do this,
00:38:25this is why their zone is so effective.
00:38:27So I think it's something that their players are used to.
00:38:30Two misfires at the line.
00:38:32Kansas, 8 out of 15 tonight, shooting freeze.
00:38:36McNair, a two-point shot.
00:38:38Anthony with the tip.
00:38:39Back didn't look sore there, did it?
00:38:41Not at all.
00:38:42That was probably the easiest shot.
00:38:44McNair had this entire ball game missed from 15 feet.
00:38:49Son, you stay outside that line.
00:38:50Yeah.
00:38:52One off the championship record.
00:38:54If he hits another three, he'll share it.
00:38:57Heinrich gunning.
00:39:00And Miles gets to the spot in time.
00:39:03Looking for help.
00:39:04Finds Langford.
00:39:05Langford is amazing in his size that he can get inside.
00:39:08All right, Jim Boeheim is going to say, you know what?
00:39:12They are not going to take some outside shots,
00:39:14so let's pack that zone in even further.
00:39:16Before the shot, Langford on the blocking foul.
00:39:21As we look at Miles going inside.
00:39:24Fourth, as I said, not a great shot.
00:39:26Blasher just holds his ground.
00:39:29And Kansas just pounded inside.
00:39:30They are really aggressively trying to play this game inside 10 feet.
00:39:34At this end, that was the third call against Langford.
00:39:39Warwick over Thomason.
00:39:40Nice play defensively by Dawson.
00:39:43Langford giving up too much size.
00:39:45Can't keep Anthony off the board.
00:39:46Well, that'll be number four.
00:39:48Wow, Roy Williams now in real trouble.
00:39:50We talked about the short bench,
00:39:52and he can ill afford to put Langford down
00:39:55with Langford's ability to score.
00:39:58But at least Lee, a better outside shooter, Jim,
00:40:01may be able to go ahead and compensate somewhat.
00:40:03The only man you can bring in.
00:40:05He's over 50% on the season from three.
00:40:08Michael Lee wearing that Manning number 25.
00:40:11Denied on the inbounds,
00:40:13and Lee takes it for Kansas.
00:40:15Here he is, jumper three.
00:40:20Yes, right off the bench.
00:40:22Big contribution.
00:40:23There it is.
00:40:23He has played outstanding basketball off that bench.
00:40:27And it really now gives Kansas
00:40:29two perimeter shooters in the game.
00:40:32First time under 10 since 12 and a half
00:40:35remained in the first half.
00:40:36Syracuse better go to Anthony now
00:40:38because they're getting a little frazzled.
00:40:40Bad pass.
00:40:40It's Lee again.
00:40:42Lee did a great job of defending.
00:40:43And there's Heinrich.
00:40:46No call.
00:40:46Connison put back six-point game.
00:40:48Senior to senior.
00:40:50And Jimmy Boeheim now saying,
00:40:52I need a timeout.
00:40:54Will he take it?
00:40:57Lackadaisical play by Warwick.
00:40:59Now here, Jim, is where we talk about seniors and freshmen.
00:41:02The freshmen had their way in the beginning of this game.
00:41:05Now the experienced seniors giving them some problems.
00:41:07Another steal.
00:41:08Up ahead is Miles.
00:41:10Heinrich the trailer.
00:41:11Heinrich in over Dwayne.
00:41:12Which way to call it?
00:41:13At this time, it's a block.
00:41:15Count the basket.
00:41:17Jimmy Boeheim probably waited one possession too long to call the time.
00:41:24Kansas' fast break.
00:41:26He waited for it in the first half.
00:41:28It wasn't there.
00:41:29But it is in full gear now.
00:41:32Third call against Warwick.
00:41:34The basket counts.
00:41:36Heinrich will go to the line to bring in the three.
00:41:38Kansas comes storming out of the locker room.
00:41:449-2 beginning to the second half.
00:41:47And there are the Collisons, Dave and Judy.
00:41:50Dave, former high school coach of his son, Nick.
00:41:54And right behind him, you see Jim and Nancy Heinrich.
00:41:57Jim also coaching his son back in high school.
00:42:00What are the chances of this, Jim?
00:42:01Raynacki coached both Jim and Dave at Briarcliff College.
00:42:06He had been coaching two fathers who became coaches who now have two sons in a national championship game.
00:42:13Wow.
00:42:13Amazing.
00:42:13Heinrich hits to make it a three-point game.
00:42:16They've switched that last foul now from Warwick over to Dwayne.
00:42:18Dwayne with three, Warwick with two.
00:42:20It's been man-to-man all the way, and I think it's time for Anthony to go ahead and try to take over this game,
00:42:28slow down this tremendous rush.
00:42:30He's got miles on him, giving up a lot of size.
00:42:33Edelman, tough shot.
00:42:34Graves underneath.
00:42:35Collison secures it.
00:42:36Edelman, Leuth, breaching in.
00:42:39That's going right back to McNamara.
00:42:41Quick pass to Anthony.
00:42:43Collison on the foul.
00:42:45Everybody tried from Kansas to get.
00:42:48He is really sore back there.
00:42:50Took another bang inside going up against Collison.
00:42:53But, Jim, what happened to Collison that time?
00:42:54The Kansas players took off.
00:42:56Nobody's staying back to help him get an outward pass.
00:42:59That's why he had to turn it over.
00:43:00Just his first foul.
00:43:03Canelo Anthony to shoot two.
00:43:05Eastern Regionals' most valuable player, the nation's best freshman player,
00:43:10and he is rubbing that back, giving him some problems.
00:43:14And a Baltimore, Maryland talk with Juan Dixon before the Final Four.
00:43:18Juan told him there's nothing like playing in the Final Four.
00:43:22There's his mother, Mary.
00:43:24All right together.
00:43:25Anthony and Dixon in the summertime back home in Baltimore.
00:43:28Told him to bring it back home to ball.
00:43:29Bring it back for the second straight year.
00:43:31Miles trying one from the outside.
00:43:33Heinrich gets to the spot before Edelman.
00:43:35And we had Graves.
00:43:38Good decision.
00:43:41Snappy passing and Lee too strong.
00:43:44Collison snags it.
00:43:45In and out.
00:43:48Look at Graves diving for the ball.
00:43:50What a hustle.
00:43:51Kansas ball.
00:43:52Off Edelman's leg.
00:43:53Tremendous job by Graves.
00:43:57You don't see Collison not finish those off very often.
00:44:01And Graves dives for the ball to keep this thing live.
00:44:04Great job.
00:44:04You get the feeling right now that Kansas feels it's all their momentum, don't you, Jim?
00:44:16No question about it.
00:44:17They just look like they're wanting to take this off.
00:44:21And that's taken away by Pace.
00:44:27Anthony.
00:44:30Miles and again snatches the rebound.
00:44:31He's got Heinrich up for it, but waits for Miles instead.
00:44:3513 rebounds for Collison tonight.
00:44:37Again, dictating inside.
00:44:40Step to the basket.
00:44:41And he'll hit the line.
00:44:43Jim, in that first half, despite the fact that Kansas got down by 19, they out-rebounded
00:44:48Syracuse 21-16.
00:44:50Tonight on The Late Show, don't miss Chris Elliott.
00:44:52Later this week, they've got Adam Sandler, Lisa Marie Presley.
00:44:55The Late Show with David Letterman right here on CBS America's Most Watched Network.
00:44:58So Collison, we showed his father, Dave, and we're 101-1 back in the days when Nick was playing
00:45:08there and Iowa Falls and the dad all decided to step down as coach, just take over athletic
00:45:15director's position because he wanted to travel and watch his son play his whole college career.
00:45:19Seems like this entire tournament, that's going to stay with families traveling.
00:45:23Great pass.
00:45:24He was caught for a moment.
00:45:26Collison over to now range for the basket.
00:45:29One of the things I saw Matt Kamara do right there is look at the referee and try to talk him
00:45:35into a trap.
00:45:36He has to get back to concentrating on the game.
00:45:40He lost concentration there.
00:45:41You can't be crying about calls.
00:45:45Over three minutes without a basket for the Orange.
00:45:49See Lee getting right on him now, making him put the ball on the floor.
00:45:52Boy, that looked like steps.
00:45:53I don't think so.
00:45:54Anthony going the other way.
00:45:56Jim, I think that he went up in the air, but great job by Lee to say,
00:46:00no, you're not getting that fadeaway jump shot against me.
00:46:03You're going to have to put it on the floor.
00:46:04Oh, I don't know.
00:46:10Kansas is coming on to Jay Hawks.
00:46:12Down three.
00:46:15Watch the left foot.
00:46:16The evidence is in here, Billy.
00:46:18Jim, you beat me on this one, but one eighth of an inch underneath there.
00:46:23But you know what?
00:46:24Referees work standing up, Jim.
00:46:26Unlike you, that you had the perfect, you wore me out on that one.
00:46:29The referee would never have been able to see that one, but great call on your part.
00:46:33That was a good leap for me back in my playing days.
00:46:35Look at Kansas throw it out of bounds.
00:46:37Of course, for Syracuse, they wish they would have called the travel
00:46:40because instead it was a charge on Anthony collecting his second,
00:46:42and he's sitting down right now.
00:46:44Not for long.
00:46:45He's right back up, going back in his game,
00:46:47and they're going to have to keep him in the game
00:46:49because he doesn't want to get tight with that back.
00:46:53He only attempted one three in this half.
00:46:55He misfired after knocking down ten in the first.
00:47:00Pace.
00:47:01He loves that shot.
00:47:03He's kind of like doing his impersonation of Langford.
00:47:06The left-handed scooper just penetrating inside.
00:47:09Which is really an impersonation of another number five
00:47:11who you played in this game ten years ago on this floor.
00:47:15Jalen Rose.
00:47:16That's Jalen Rose.
00:47:17That's his man.
00:47:18Langford's man.
00:47:19Yep.
00:47:19And inside.
00:47:20Grace caught underneath.
00:47:22Gets it back.
00:47:24Banks at home.
00:47:24This is the unknown factor.
00:47:27Jeff Graves, the great play to keep the ball alive before.
00:47:31He stayed out of foul trouble in this second half.
00:47:33Warren, how about that move?
00:47:39Now we see the ballet dancer come back.
00:47:43Heinrich guns it quickly.
00:47:45And Pace all three on the floor.
00:47:47Foul on Kansas.
00:47:49On Lee.
00:47:49Oh, somebody, is that Graves that hurt himself down there with an ankle?
00:47:54Slow to get up.
00:47:55After the game, get official NCAA championship merchandise.
00:47:59Click on shop at CBSSportsLine.com or on America Online.
00:48:03Enter the keyword CBS SportsLine.
00:48:05Graves is staying in.
00:48:06And, Jim, when you look at this Kansas team, you think,
00:48:08well, how could Roy Williams, this great recruiter, have such a short bench?
00:48:12You have to remember that one of the key players that he has,
00:48:15Wayne Simeon, is sitting on that bench but unable to play
00:48:18because of that shoulder operation he's had.
00:48:22Pace comes inside.
00:48:24Dipsy dude picked up by Collison.
00:48:26Set by numbers.
00:48:29Miles got the spin on it.
00:48:32And, again, there was a three on two.
00:48:34Kansas now starting to show some momentum with their break.
00:48:40If you're Syracuse, I think you want to get McNamara open for an outside shot.
00:48:44And Graves led that one up ahead.
00:48:46Tough pass.
00:48:47Graves.
00:48:47Twice now.
00:48:48Graves made suspect passes.
00:48:50Anthony.
00:48:51Big three.
00:48:52Huge mistake by Graves trying to make a play.
00:48:55Now there's no numbers.
00:48:56Heinrich should pull it back out.
00:48:57And does.
00:48:59It's a coach's son for you.
00:49:01And the other coach's son is going back to the line.
00:49:05But there's one foul situation Syracuse can afford.
00:49:08McNeil in fourth.
00:49:10He can give up ten fouls.
00:49:12The running Jayhawks in the second half.
00:49:15Much more so in the first seven minutes than we saw the entire first half.
00:49:19Jim, the greatest Kansas comeback was one that we had a number of years ago
00:49:24where they came back from 19 to beat UCLA.
00:49:29They were down 18 in this game.
00:49:30There's Wayne Simeon.
00:49:31Shoulder surgery performed last week in New York.
00:49:34He couldn't be with the team when they were out west having the operation.
00:49:38And that's a loss of like 15 points a game.
00:49:4014-8.
00:49:418.2 rebounds a game.
00:49:43An all-conference caliber performer.
00:49:45This is a story now developed.
00:49:47Kansas has missed nine of its last 11 from the line.
00:49:50Kansas only shoots 66% as a team.
00:49:55Pace got loose.
00:49:58What value points this young man has put up for Syracuse in this NCAA tournament.
00:50:05Kansas overall 9 for 20, 45% free flow.
00:50:10Good skip pass.
00:50:11Heinrich has to be ready to shoot that ball of the catch.
00:50:14Thomasin.
00:50:17Foul on Edelon.
00:50:20Now Heinrich twisted an ankle.
00:50:24You're going to see guys walking him off.
00:50:26They don't want to go to the bench at any time in this game.
00:50:29Watch how Heinrich comes down, twists his ankle on the foot.
00:50:33And he lands.
00:50:33Wow.
00:50:34Oh, yeah.
00:50:35But he is not coming out of this ballgame.
00:50:39He's still trying to walk.
00:50:40Well, no.
00:50:41No, he's going to walk this one off.
00:50:43He doesn't want to come out.
00:50:45And Bryant Nash is up to check in.
00:50:46And Heinrich is telling Roy Williams he's okay.
00:50:50He doesn't want to come out.
00:50:50Ash.
00:50:51You're going to take him off.
00:50:57I don't think he'll be out long, Jim.
00:51:00I want to have him go down toward the end of the bench and walk.
00:51:03I'll tell you why you can't afford to have Lankford out of the ballgame now.
00:51:06You only basically have one ball handler in this ballgame in miles.
00:51:09They had it down to three and a rebound before the turnover and a huge basket from outside
00:51:22by Anthony.
00:51:23And a big threat outside.
00:51:34And that's last touch by Kansas.
00:51:36It's a lineup that Kansas cannot win with that's on the floor right now.
00:51:40It can't keep Heinrich out long.
00:51:44Heinrich getting taped up down on the end line.
00:51:46And as soon as he's back in, he can get ready to go.
00:51:50He'll be back in this ballgame.
00:51:51We're going to re-wrap him.
00:51:54And this is the fastest tape job in Kansas history.
00:51:57If they're going to stay in this ballgame, we better get him back out there.
00:52:01Warwick doubled up and traveled.
00:52:03Nice help by Miles.
00:52:04Miles closed in on him.
00:52:06The pressure led to the turnover.
00:52:08Got a timeout on the floor.
00:52:12Roy Williams.
00:52:13Be the biggest dream of my life.
00:52:15Come true.
00:52:16If I can win the championship.
00:52:17Down eight.
00:52:17CBS, hope you're enjoying the pictures from the Pontiac performance cam.
00:52:24How about the second half performance here, Billy, by Kansas?
00:52:27A good comeback, but I think they really hurt themselves.
00:52:29They got it down to three on a couple of occasions.
00:52:33Four occasions.
00:52:34Down to three.
00:52:34What time with possession?
00:52:36Short-lived.
00:52:36Let's go to Bonnie Bernstein.
00:52:39Well, Jim, Kirk Heinrich's headed back into the game.
00:52:41He just got his left ankle re-taped, but just watching him, he's in excruciating pain.
00:52:45He told me he twisted it twice on Saturday in the semifinals, but he did get through practice all day, got stem treatment, and he didn't think it would be a problem.
00:52:52Obviously, that's not the case.
00:52:54He'll watch standing on the sideline for now.
00:52:59Collison, tough shot, no call, and pulled away by Pace.
00:53:03How about Pace in the second half, Jim?
00:53:06Sneaky production.
00:53:09We see McNamara down on that bench.
00:53:12He's 0-2 in the second half after that blistering first half.
00:53:16Anthony was down on his feet.
00:53:17They say when he's really off, his shots come up short.
00:53:23Miles, no place to go.
00:53:25Four just held his ground.
00:53:26The fourth never moved, and Miles came right to him.
00:53:30Heinrich is ready to come in at the scorer's table.
00:53:32Anthony on the drive, and to give up Edelman.
00:53:35Boom.
00:53:36Off the front of the rim.
00:53:37Edelman pretty creative on the inside, isn't he, Jim?
00:53:39No.
00:53:40The math of product.
00:53:41You can go to the official site of NCAA sports to get complete NCAA basketball championship coverage.
00:53:46From video highlights to recaps and more, go to NCAAsports.com.
00:53:52Edelman and Anthony both went to Oak Hill, the storied high school program.
00:54:00And Edelman, of course, was ineligible, Syracuse for years, and everybody thought that he'd be ready to go at the start of this year.
00:54:06Had to sit out 12 games, declared ineligible for playing in an outside league,
00:54:11which, boy, was a fine line there for this young man, but I'm glad to see him back.
00:54:16He was the Orangeman's top scorer the first two rounds of this tournament.
00:54:22That's the first miss of the night from the line for Syracuse.
00:54:25Team that historically has been known as a poor free-throw shooting team,
00:54:29but they're a better free-throw shooting team this year than his games.
00:54:32Graves lost it.
00:54:32Collison in the right place.
00:54:34Gets out of the lane.
00:54:35Collison's had some pretty good hands, doesn't he?
00:54:38Incredibly.
00:54:38Every time it's in the area, it's not going to be taken away.
00:54:42He's going to snatch it.
00:54:45Graves.
00:54:46Open.
00:54:47Looks just as soon as I say that.
00:54:49He loses the handle.
00:54:50Lee underneath.
00:54:51Out comes the Orange.
00:54:53Pace.
00:54:54Miles reaches in.
00:54:55And Miles actually felt that he tapped the ball off Pace's leg,
00:55:01but the official, because of how fast that ball got down the floor,
00:55:05wasn't in position to see it.
00:55:06They weren't down there, and I think he may have a good case.
00:55:08Yep.
00:55:11So they got it down to three on four occasions.
00:55:14Now it's back to nine, and they have a chance, really,
00:55:16to get it right back to the halftime margin of 11.
00:55:19Lee is really bodying up Anthony,
00:55:24putting the body on him every step of the way here.
00:55:29Coming back left hand.
00:55:31Too strong, Collison, with the big mitts.
00:55:3517 rebounds.
00:55:37Collison has to stay on his floor the whole game.
00:55:39Let's check out Heinrich way off.
00:55:41You know why, Jim?
00:55:42He doesn't have to lift on the leg.
00:55:44All comes from the feet.
00:55:46Bad play.
00:55:49Not the time you want to throw that lob inside,
00:55:54even with Warwick, who is long.
00:55:57They had a nice fast break opportunity.
00:55:59I thought Evelyn should have taken that right to the basket,
00:56:01because he's a good finisher.
00:56:02His first foul on Heinrich.
00:56:04Thursday, CBS, without a trace.
00:56:07Absorbing, compelling, unique.
00:56:09Don't miss a new episode.
00:56:11That's what the critics call it.
00:56:1210, 9 central on America's most watched network.
00:56:16Jim Boeheim, you know, halfway through the second half.
00:56:19His 87 experience here in New Orleans.
00:56:22McNamara comes back in for Boeheim.
00:56:25Tremendous experience, said Jim,
00:56:27for about five days, 39 minutes, 56 seconds,
00:56:31until they were beaten at this end of the floor.
00:56:33And a key smart jumper with four seconds to play.
00:56:37Jim Eaglin, who had a high this year of 26 against Notre Dame,
00:56:41so it shows you how explosive he can be.
00:56:44Back with double digits, Billy, 68-58.
00:56:48That run has taken a lot of energy out of Kansas, hasn't it?
00:56:51It's really noticeable.
00:56:53He really felt, though,
00:56:54they were going to get all the way back.
00:56:55They never did.
00:56:56Again, Miles reluctant to take the outside jumper.
00:57:00Nice pass inside.
00:57:01And Graves with the lay-in.
00:57:02The first field goal in four minutes.
00:57:06The Kansas City shooting percentage,
00:57:08basically, is because they've done a great job
00:57:10getting the ball inside.
00:57:13The Anthony wanting to post up lead.
00:57:16Huge size advantage there, Billy.
00:57:18Lee is awful strong, though, and he's a good leaper.
00:57:20Did a great job defensively in that Duke game
00:57:23with a sweet 16.
00:57:24Edelon, big contribution from the freshman.
00:57:34Good help by Pace.
00:57:38Not going to get much opportunity for dribbles down inside.
00:57:41Got to catch it to the end.
00:57:43A hole for his third.
00:57:46Jim Boeheim never worries about fourth, though,
00:57:49getting into foul trouble.
00:57:50He knows he can't come back with McNeil.
00:57:52And now here comes the guy that's got to stay out of foul trouble
00:57:55the rest of the way.
00:57:57Lankford.
00:57:58Lankford.
00:57:58It's the 17th foul.
00:58:01One-on-one for Collison.
00:58:02Yes, Lankford returns with his four.
00:58:05Roy Williams' side needs to start hitting free throws.
00:58:09Roy Williams' big 12.
00:58:12First of the year.
00:58:13And the Royals is really a mystery.
00:58:15Hey, there's Pace again.
00:58:1814 against Auburn.
00:58:19He had 12 against Texas and coming up big in his final.
00:58:25Somebody better start giving him some respect.
00:58:30Pace has to go outside for help.
00:58:33McNamara and a squeeze.
00:58:34Back to Pace.
00:58:35Dumps it inside.
00:58:36Too strong.
00:58:37That ball would have been hard to catch if Pace had taken a little off of that.
00:58:42Anthony would have had a layup.
00:58:43Jim Boeheim trying to become the coach for the second straight year
00:58:47to take an alma mater to the national championship.
00:58:50It was Gary Williams from Maryland last year.
00:58:52Boeheim, a Syracuse man for more than half his life,
00:58:55as a player and assistant, as a head coach.
00:58:58Lee.
00:58:59Forth, excellent box out that time.
00:59:03Collison and Graves are really tired out there on the floor,
00:59:06but Roy Williams has nowhere to go.
00:59:08They're going to have to play the rest of the way.
00:59:10Forth wasn't looking.
00:59:12Anthony ran to save him.
00:59:14McNamara.
00:59:16Nothing there for him in the second half.
00:59:18He's, what, 0-3 now?
00:59:20Lee up ahead.
00:59:23Pinned underneath.
00:59:24Forth.
00:59:24Loose ball.
00:59:25Graves.
00:59:26He was held.
00:59:27And you can see Collison not even getting down court that time,
00:59:32really looking for a rest.
00:59:36Well, Thursday, we talked.
00:59:38He's called a number of people to go.
00:59:40At the fourth agency, and now here's CSI.
00:59:44Thursdays at 9, 8 central here on CBS.
00:59:46America's most-watched network this Thursday.
00:59:50The old sign of a guy being tired.
00:59:52Look at Collison holding his pants down around his knees.
00:59:55That's a sign of all time that a guy is really dragging.
01:00:01Another missed front end of a 1-1.
01:00:05Robinson with only two points in the second half.
01:00:07Pace, turnaround.
01:00:08A lock by Heinrich.
01:00:09Now you know how Jason Grodner felt.
01:00:11Um, perfect lock by Heinrich.
01:00:12Either one rattles out fourth with a huge putback.
01:00:17Those are four points today that Syracuse never counted on.
01:00:20Made his first two of the night as well.
01:00:22And Syracuse now has the edge in the second half.
01:00:25Plus one in the second half.
01:00:27And right now, if you're Kansas, you have got to make this free throw.
01:00:30You've got to stop this drain here of giving up opportunities that are so easy.
01:00:35You can see banging on the inside.
01:00:39Graves doing a great job, but he is tired.
01:00:41And fourth knows he can go ahead and sustain even more fouls.
01:00:46Fourth has come up with some huge plays.
01:00:48Had the opening basket of the game.
01:00:50Put back a moment ago.
01:00:51And now Kansas.
01:00:53And now they have seven in a row.
01:00:55Nine for 23 for the night.
01:01:01Graves with a great game against Arizona when he had the 13 points and 15 rebounds in that one.
01:01:07But he's a tired man right now.
01:01:10Leave.
01:01:11Rebound.
01:01:11Outside Heinrich.
01:01:14Short again.
01:01:16Graves.
01:01:16Put back.
01:01:17Huge by Langford.
01:01:19Langford the rested man.
01:01:21But now you're talking about a 10-point deficit.
01:01:26You remember what Jim Boeheim did the other night to Texas.
01:01:28He started to take some clock off.
01:01:30Will he try it again tonight?
01:01:36Kick.
01:01:36Reset the 35.
01:01:41It has been a physical second half.
01:01:46The scramble is on for the championship.
01:01:49Under seven to play.
01:01:51Circle that Kansas free throw.
01:02:01Huge story here is the free throws.
01:02:03Kansas has missed its last eight, including a pair of front ends of one-on-one.
01:02:06Let's go over to Armand Gattelian.
01:02:08Thanks, Jim.
01:02:09Billy, you were absolutely right about Carmelo Anthony's back.
01:02:11Since my last report, I've been keeping a very close eye on him.
01:02:14He's got some problems in that lower left area.
01:02:17He's grabbed it three or four times during the course of the last eight or nine minutes.
01:02:20Back to you, Jim.
01:02:21All right.
01:02:22He was diving for a loose ball last game against James Thomas, Texas.
01:02:27He stepped on his back accidentally, and that's caused the strain.
01:02:31But he has Collison on him now, so he can go outside and not be part of that banging around inside.
01:02:36Look for him to take Collison outside with a shot.
01:02:38Eadlin, really good maneuver inside.
01:02:47Leads to a Graves rebound, snaps the outlet.
01:02:50Heinrich trying to accelerate the pace again.
01:02:53Five people from Syracuse get back down on defense before Kansas can have two on offense.
01:02:59Kansas have another comeback run, and there's the start.
01:03:04Langford, 19 to lead.
01:03:06Langford.
01:03:06Jim, you can see the difference.
01:03:08Langford, who had to sit on the bench because of foul trouble, is a rested player.
01:03:12Kansas with Collison and Graves are very tired right now.
01:03:16And here's Anthony taking Collison outside.
01:03:20Back inside, Collison with the foul.
01:03:22Oh, Anthony is actually showing some pain just running down the floor, Jim.
01:03:28It's not only when he's getting banged around.
01:03:33Stutter step.
01:03:33Langford runs into Collison.
01:03:35Loose ball to Eadlin.
01:03:39Uh-oh.
01:03:40Hold on a minute here.
01:03:41It's going to be thought would be a walk.
01:03:43Instead, it's going to be a foul on Langford.
01:03:45A huge call.
01:03:47And that is number five on number five.
01:03:50That is a huge call.
01:03:52Well, there was body contact, but really, I thought Eadlin was going down anyway.
01:03:56This is a huge call.
01:04:01And I don't know if Kansas can recover without the rest of the precious man
01:04:06and the strongest offensive threat they had, Jim, going out with 5.36 to go.
01:04:11Their leading scorer on tonight.
01:04:16And what put him in foul trouble is having to have the assignment early on with Carmelo Anthony.
01:04:22We knew that was going to be a very tough assignment, giving up that much size.
01:04:25One and one here for Eadlin.
01:04:27And Syracuse hitting at the other end.
01:04:30Now, Kansas, can you just imagine their shooting right on their average?
01:04:36What a difference it would have made here tonight.
01:04:37Well, as I said, Kansas, not a good free throw shooting team, but went to the line 317 more times than their opponents.
01:04:45So they offset poor shooting by getting the line more.
01:04:49But tonight, even though they're getting the line more, they're just having a physical night.
01:04:53They would have taken that two-thirds average tonight.
01:04:55Tough pass.
01:04:57Try to force it in to that zone.
01:04:59You cannot have a pass where you're looking right into that zone that's from that far out and not have it picked off.
01:05:05That was a good cut by Pace.
01:05:15And check now the CBS Sportsline stat of the game.
01:05:20And remind you, you can get a complete wrap-up for the NCAA tournament.
01:05:23CBSSportsline.com or on America Online under the keyword CBS Sportsline.
01:05:27Pace makes the move past Lee.
01:05:29Drives home two.
01:05:30And there is that unusual left-hand release by Pace.
01:05:39And Edeland reaches in for the Pilfer.
01:05:42Pace picks up the loose ball.
01:05:4318-4 advantage.
01:05:45Bench scoring tonight for the Orange.
01:05:52Nice distribution.
01:05:54Anthony.
01:05:56Heinrich.
01:05:57No ball Pace.
01:06:00Turnovers the last three trips for the Jayhawks.
01:06:04See what a labor it is for Collison just to get down the floor.
01:06:07He's so tired.
01:06:09They do look very tired on this possession.
01:06:12Reach in McNamara.
01:06:14McNamara, who really looked like he was going to break the all-time Final Four record in the first half,
01:06:20has not had a field goal, I don't think, in the second half.
01:06:22Picks up a cheap foul.
01:06:23He has no scoring in the second half.
01:06:29Nick Collison, senior night, he talked about his hero, his grandfather, who lost about a year ago.
01:06:35Arden Collison is a tail gunner in World War II.
01:06:39As always, Dick Enberg, with his eloquence on Saturday, told the story about his grandfather, the World War II hero.
01:06:47This is unbelievable from the free-throw line, but when you're tired, it can have an effect.
01:06:56Finals.
01:06:58Hollison, for the night from the line, really struggling.
01:07:04Three for ten.
01:07:04Is Kansas going to try to trap it?
01:07:08They are so tired, that is not going to be an effective weapon.
01:07:14Short bench, and now with Langford out, really hurts him.
01:07:17Oh!
01:07:18Drive.
01:07:19Miles.
01:07:20Plucks it out of the air.
01:07:22Syracuse back.
01:07:23Miner, though, wants to drive.
01:07:25Reach in.
01:07:25Edelon.
01:07:26Scoop.
01:07:27Hollison.
01:07:28Down the nine.
01:07:28Jim Boeheim at 3.50 still has not tried to take any time off the clock.
01:07:37Jim Boeheim can look up and see that score.
01:07:39That is the identical score by which he lost to Kentucky in his last final, and that is going
01:07:44to be a turnover.
01:07:46Now, if you're McNamara, Jim, you want to keep the ball in your hands because you want to be
01:07:49followed.
01:07:50You're the best free-throw shooter in Big East history.
01:07:53You want to keep the ball yourself.
01:07:55Kansas has it when we return.
01:07:57Kansas, if it is fatigued, does have four timeouts.
01:08:02Billy, do you feel like they have enough legs here to come back in the final four minutes?
01:08:07I really don't, particularly with Langford out in foul trouble, and what you're going
01:08:11to find, I think, is that Jim Boeheim, with that timeout, I'll say, let's take some time
01:08:14off the clock.
01:08:15We'll see a guy that wants a lot of time to go off the clock, Ronnie Cycli, who played
01:08:19in this final four.
01:08:21He and Derek Coleman and company came away with that key smart shot on the losing end.
01:08:28Heartbreaking loss, and Coach Boeheim wanted as many of the players possible from that 87 team
01:08:34to be here tonight to try to be a part of this, if it isn't back to championship night.
01:08:39Heinrich, launching three.
01:08:40Great job right there on the penetration and kickout.
01:08:4476-70.
01:08:46Carmelo Anthony saw what was going to happen to him, but he was suckered inside on the penetration.
01:08:51It's Heinrich's first basket since turning the ankle.
01:08:55Wide open fourth.
01:08:56Eric Connison, be careful.
01:08:58He has to be very careful.
01:08:59That could have been an intentional foul.
01:09:02A great pass inside and a look.
01:09:07This is just a great play inside by Warren.
01:09:11Fourth makes the catch, and that is his third basket of the night.
01:09:15Jim, after going, in this particular tournament, five games without a field goal.
01:09:21Dips it down and out for the three-point play.
01:09:25Three minutes left.
01:09:27So you can see what Kansas strategy.
01:09:29They're going to half-court zone trap.
01:09:34A hold outside.
01:09:35That was called from underneath the basket.
01:09:37That was fourth who got called on the foul.
01:09:40Graves really banging inside.
01:09:44That Thursday on CBS.
01:09:46A whole new stream for those left, and an all-new Survivor Thursday at 8, 7 Central on CBS America's most-watched network.
01:09:57Jim, I think good strategy for Roy Williams the rest of the way.
01:09:59He's got plenty of timeouts to give.
01:10:01I think he almost wants to say, okay, I'm going to use them all up here and use them to rest my players as opposed to strategy.
01:10:08Just let them go over there, sit down, and relax, try to get whatever legs they have left into them.
01:10:15And if you're Syracuse, you want the ball into the great free-throw shooter's hands.
01:10:20Magda Maher has got to want it and hold on to it until he gets fouled.
01:10:25Graves at the line tonight.
01:10:270 for 3.
01:10:31Solid with that one.
01:10:32He's had a solid performance, Jim.
01:10:34Very impressed with what this young man has done.
01:10:36I like what you said earlier.
01:10:38He's been like an all-conference performer during the NCAA.
01:10:42He's like a quiet MVP for this team.
01:10:45Tipped around, taken by Anthony.
01:10:47Another miss, and he can see Anthony grimacing any time he gets in any action at all.
01:10:52This young man really having to gun it out.
01:10:54The other one handles so much of the ball this half.
01:11:00That's going the other way.
01:11:01Yeah, that is not touching the ball, Jim, and I think that's a big mistake for Syracuse.
01:11:082.40 on the clock.
01:11:11Heinrich left alone inside.
01:11:13Paulison whipped it down to the corner.
01:11:15How about that heads-up play by the two seniors?
01:11:18And this helps Roy Williams gets a timeout.
01:11:21That timeout called by Kansas.
01:11:27You want to see the ball in the hands of McNamara for Syracuse.
01:11:31Absolutely.
01:11:32You want to get the ball to the great free-throw shooter.
01:11:34He's also a good ball, and I realize he hasn't scored in the second half.
01:11:38But if you're Syracuse, let him touch it.
01:11:41He's being guarded by Heinrich.
01:11:46Back to Anthony, and they all back off.
01:11:48Well, this is a pretty good matchup, too,
01:11:50because Anthony is the superior ball handler.
01:11:54Collison not used to playing a guy this far from the basket.
01:11:56Collison trying to get a five-second call.
01:11:58Hey, looks over to the official as a reminder.
01:12:01And a double-up to the corner, McNamara.
01:12:05Baseline shut off.
01:12:09Pace stepping in.
01:12:10Seven on the shot clock as we approach two minutes.
01:12:14Edelin.
01:12:15Up and in.
01:12:17That was a huge play because Kansas had the clock in their favor.
01:12:23Big possession for Syracuse.
01:12:25Oh!
01:12:26Inside Collison.
01:12:27It was Collison to Heinrich, and now Heinrich to Collison.
01:12:30Yes, they return to favor.
01:12:31Like they haven't played together for four years.
01:12:34Another quick timeout.
01:12:38These seniors not letting go of the dream.
01:12:41Kansas commits a foul here in a non-shooting situation.
01:12:46It will be one-and-one.
01:12:47McNamara almost automatic at the line.
01:12:49But he hasn't touched the ball.
01:12:51He's not aggressively going for the ball.
01:12:54He breaks long pace in the corner.
01:12:57And again, Anthony will bring it up.
01:12:58An 11-4 run here by Kansas to keep Popel on.
01:13:05Trying to trap, get that ball out of Anthony's hands.
01:13:10Pace in and out, and Graves secures it.
01:13:17And he almost launched it inside open.
01:13:20That was Pace again getting his hands on the ball.
01:13:23You talk about a huge play off the bench.
01:13:25See, McNamara gives up the ball all the time.
01:13:28I don't know why.
01:13:34That possession could have made it.
01:13:36One possession game.
01:13:38Pace.
01:13:40Too strong.
01:13:41Warwick.
01:13:41And it's Heinrich.
01:13:42Now Collison with the rebound.
01:13:45Enrich is open on the side.
01:13:46Lee got it.
01:13:47Down to three.
01:13:49One minute on the clock.
01:13:51And you know what?
01:13:51Now Syracuse looks tired.
01:13:54What a gut performance by Kansas.
01:13:56I don't know if it's tired or days,
01:13:57because they know Kansas is coming at them.
01:14:02Well, the season started.
01:14:03The first college game of the season was November 14th.
01:14:06Syracuse was in that game.
01:14:08And now the whole season comes down to a minute.
01:14:11Julie Boeheim.
01:14:12Jim Boeheim.
01:14:15Jim, it's been a matchup.
01:14:18Collison on Carmelo Anthony, which has allowed Syracuse to get the ball up the floor because Anthony can dribble it very well against him.
01:14:25Let's see what Collison does.
01:14:27He picks up a quick foul.
01:14:28That'll be one and one at the other end.
01:14:33Now the other day, everything went for Carmelo Anthony.
01:14:3733 points, 14 rebounds.
01:14:40Can you look at this sensational freshman season?
01:14:42And about the only thing that didn't go well for him, three-throw shooting in the last minute.
01:14:48He looked it up, and he's eight out of 14 in the last minute of the game.
01:14:53Well, Jim, we have had two freshmen become the M.O.P. of the Final Four.
01:14:57You will never forget Louisville.
01:15:00Hervis Ellison.
01:15:02And the man before that.
01:15:03Arnie Ferent.
01:15:04And 1944.
01:15:06So not many people get there.
01:15:08This young guy's music candidate, but he misses.
01:15:11Front end of the one and one.
01:15:13A three to tie.
01:15:14No need to go there now, I guess.
01:15:16You can go for two.
01:15:17Get that ball down inside.
01:15:18Let Collison touch it.
01:15:20There he is.
01:15:22Step to the basket.
01:15:23Kick back outside.
01:15:24Miles for the three.
01:15:25Front of the rim.
01:15:25Tipped up.
01:15:26Oh, Graves gets it back.
01:15:27And he'll head back to the line.
01:15:29He went for the dunk follow instead of the securing at first.
01:15:34But I'm going to give him a lot of credit for battling on the inside.
01:15:38You'll see that ball up on the rim.
01:15:40Here comes Graves.
01:15:42If that ball had gone in, Jim, that would have been goaltending.
01:15:45So he was kind of lucky, maybe, that it didn't.
01:15:51Two for Graves.
01:15:53It's been a nightmare for Roe Williams.
01:15:55He didn't want to even look at this free throw.
01:15:57It looked pretty good if he was watching.
01:16:02And this is the closest they have been in the second half.
01:16:05Down to two, timeout, Syracuse.
01:16:11That picture shows it all.
01:16:18To recap, Kansas was down 18 at one time in the first half.
01:16:2111 at the intermission.
01:16:22Cut it on four occasions to three.
01:16:25Then it swelled back to 12.
01:16:26Now it's two, and it can even get one closer.
01:16:31Jim, considering these two coaches, this is going to be one of the most gut-wrenching finishes in tournament history.
01:16:39Pulled away by Anthony.
01:16:41And here, finally, McInerney with the ball.
01:16:45Heidrick giving chase.
01:16:47Picked up his dribble.
01:16:49They just barely got it across in timeout by Anthony.
01:16:52I mean, with about a second left, maybe not even.
01:16:55Timeout for Syracuse.
01:16:57With that sore back, it's a wonder he made the catch.
01:17:03Timeout, Orangeman.
01:17:06Jim, that's Billy Packer.
01:17:07Four-second differential game clock.
01:17:09It's a shot clock.
01:17:10Billy, if you're Kansas, how long do you let it go down?
01:17:13Oh, I think you go play tough defense right now.
01:17:15No, you can't let it go down to the four-second mark.
01:17:17But I think Roy Williams has used those timeouts beautifully here to rest his basketball team.
01:17:23If Carmelo Anthony had the good back, I don't think there'd be any problem getting the ball right to him.
01:17:28Oh, Graves hits the floor.
01:17:30Warren and Dweeney will be the man to the line.
01:17:33Double bonus.
01:17:34He'll shoot two.
01:17:34And again, Anthony's slow to get up.
01:17:36This young man has been battered tonight.
01:17:39And there's no question in my mind that he's nowhere near 100%.
01:17:43Otherwise, they'd be putting the ball in his hands and just let him control this one.
01:17:46That is on Collison.
01:17:50And that is it for Nick.
01:17:53So now you have Collison the number one score.
01:17:56Langford the number three score.
01:17:58Both out of this game.
01:18:0019 points, 21 rebounds, and the close to a spectacular career.
01:18:05Jim, what Kansas could have done, not going backwards here,
01:18:10will start playing offense and defense a little bit to save Collison, but too late for that now.
01:18:1468% shooter heads to the line to shoot two.
01:18:17Webb Dweeney.
01:18:19But they're 21-1 when he has double figures, and he has double figures.
01:18:28Amazing what free throw shooting could have done for either one of these clubs.
01:18:31Particularly Kansas in the second half.
01:18:35This is huge, Jim, because you can force Kansas to start thinking three.
01:18:41Kansas second half, pull out at 17.
01:18:43Unbelievable.
01:18:44Draeney, one more.
01:18:45The 24-second.
01:18:47Three-point game.
01:18:48What do you do now?
01:18:49I think he can still go for two.
01:18:51You've got enough time, but they've got to get it up in a hurry.
01:18:53And if they don't, then they're going to have to go for three.
01:18:55Heinrich can tie it with the long one.
01:18:57Rattles out.
01:18:59Warren with the rebound, and he'll head to the other end for two.
01:19:02Well, Heinrich thought he had made it.
01:19:03I thought that was a pretty good job by Heinrich to take that shot.
01:19:07Roy Williams did as well.
01:19:08He wants his guys back down court.
01:19:10You're talking about the best career three-point shooting player that Kansas has ever had.
01:19:16I think, I thought it was a good percentage shot for him.
01:19:20Look at this, for the tie.
01:19:22Back rim, front rim, and out.
01:19:25Now it's Warren's turn to shoot two, 67%.
01:19:28These foul shots are not only being missed by both teams,
01:19:39they don't even, they're looking ugly.
01:19:41We've seen some bad misses.
01:19:43And there goes the number one free-throw shooter in the Big East down to the bench.
01:19:47Pace comes in for McNamara.
01:19:49Jim Boeheim wanting more sides on the defensive end.
01:19:54Syracuse.
01:19:55On and out.
01:19:55A three can tie it.
01:19:58Kansas has a shot.
01:20:01Miles to the right side.
01:20:02Heinrich to the top of the key.
01:20:04Heinrich with four seconds.
01:20:05Gives it up corner.
01:20:06Lee shot blocked.
01:20:07They have less than a second to go.
01:20:10It's not how tall, it's how long.
01:20:12And Warwick got a piece of that.
01:20:14It's actually showing no time on the clock,
01:20:18but seven-tenths of a second on the shot clock.
01:20:23No, there's seven-tenths on the game clock.
01:20:27And Heinrich, I thought he would launch it.
01:20:29Lee instead.
01:20:30Seven-tenths of a second.
01:20:32I really thought Heinrich probably should have taken it,
01:20:34but you know, Lee's the best shooter they have percentage-wise,
01:20:38but it's just the fact that Warwick, with those long arms,
01:20:41was able to pick it off.
01:20:42They're going to review now to see if there's a need to add any tenths to the clock.
01:20:48Check it out.
01:20:50Lee got exactly the shot.
01:20:52If you're Kansas, you'd like them to take,
01:20:54but look at Warwick, those long arms.
01:20:56At what point do you say it crossed out?
01:20:59They've got to add some time here.
01:21:01Yeah, I think so, Jim.
01:21:02I would say 1.1.
01:21:06Would you go that far?
01:21:07I'd maybe even go a little bit more than that.
01:21:09So, who will take the biggest three at the Superdome
01:21:13since Adam Vinatieri kicked the winning field goal here 14 months ago
01:21:17in the Super Bowl for the Patriots?
01:21:21Kansas, four out of 19.
01:21:23Yes, they did, in fact, go north of that.
01:21:251.5.
01:21:26Four out of 19 for the night.
01:21:29Can they find a way to get it in the hands of Heinrich?
01:21:32Well, obviously, you know it's got to be a three.
01:21:34No sense going for two, and if you're Syracuse,
01:21:36you go ahead and don't worry about anybody underneath the basket.
01:21:39Let it go there.
01:21:41But Heinrich and Lee are the two guys.
01:21:43Heinrich starts inside, goes outside.
01:21:45Heinrich gets it.
01:21:46Heinrich puts up the shot.
01:21:47It's too long, and Syracuse is your national champion.
01:21:54Has New Orleans given us final fours or not?
