00:00all right off the works on pretty excited for today well that's good then because we've got
00:07a lot of dirt to feed I'll tell you it's gonna get into it how in make sure it gets done yeah
00:16it's just so weird that you know like please having to want to get picked up because doesn't
00:20usually do this I've never had to pick him up for work you know I'm a bit worried about it
00:30bloody hell mate what have you done now
00:39trying to push start the bloody ranger on the weekend torn calf torn calf
00:47um I don't think we can have crushes out on site man not out mining anyway
00:57we'll be all right because I'm coming out take it easy Ben I don't want to see you getting hurt any
01:17more than what you already are yeah I know because you look really bad right now at the
01:20moment we'll crushes in your hand so Logan you up for the challenge mate yeah I'll try to help as
01:24much as I can so let's get moving yeah we've got to get some bloody dirt rumbling
01:29right now if you just stand back and keep out of my way this will probably work a lot faster the
01:46boys are erecting a six-foot-high fence just to stop us from falling down into the pit what I said to the
01:55left do it more lightning ridge new south wales for over a century fortune hunters have been drawn to
02:07this hostile landscape in search of opal right there that's that's right there okay now mining partners
02:18Lee Hobden that's perfect and Roger Williams aka slim pickings how much work this is mate follow in
02:27their footsteps with Roger's son Logan drafted in to learn the trade it's really fun being here being
02:36able to do this work with my dad and that this is it that guards are up yep let's get George moving yeah
02:44this season the team strategy is to find opal in the waste dirt from over 100 years of mining using
02:55their dry rumbler George and a converted cement mixer as an agitator wash plant season targets 120,000
03:05I only buffed it up I was going to keep it a hundred thousand but we've got George it cost me 20 grand
03:10but last week we did make a promise to sissy that will give her at least another eight to ten
03:15thousand dollar parcel hopefully there's more I don't know yourself whatever you do that one's there
03:20that's fine I'm fine I'm all good it gets hot in there and there's no air con in there big
03:26yeah I know here we go
03:29so I've hurt myself all the muscle on my calf I can handle the little bit of pain but I'm not jumping up
03:38and down with that calf muscle I'm actually being pipping on it today rightio first bucket in
03:44going to figure the crap out of George today the dry rumbler processes tons of waste dirt from the
03:51old-timers workings removing sand and dust I'm hoping in the tailings the old-timers are left
03:58there's some beautiful opal in it I definitely won't say no the remaining rocks are washed in a
04:03cement mixer to remove the caked on dirt and reveal any opal I left my career down in Newcastle so coming
04:13up here to lightning ridge and taking the risks we really need this venture here right now to keep on
04:17producing my kids my family we all depend on it third generation minor so I need to uphold the
04:26family legacy keep the family name going and make livelihood it's just too much big material going in
04:34so I see the front part of it here yeah so you start seeing the build up there sing out to me yeah I'm
04:45going to pick up another bucket I think it means go slower no trickle this dude even a lot less than
04:51what I was doing
04:51what happened there yeah that rock just lifted the whole barrel off you're kidding me
05:12nah she's jammed underneath the belt and the barrel and then nearly lifted the whole barrel off that
05:18barrel is only just sitting on those wheels and that whole barrel can come off and go tumbling down
05:24into the hole a world of bloody hurt there
05:27we're putting a lot of effort into this car trying to take a lot more dirt behind it so when we do get
05:48there to that bottom level we want to be able to take out 40 50 square meters of it not just a five
05:54minute have a little look I'll get a few shells and a little bit of seam we're after a big parcel and
06:00this is the only way we're going to get one doing it properly
06:03how the did that break man I got no idea snapped it clean off yeah we just broke the pin so it's game
06:23over what a as I bring the bucket around it's um put a bit too much pressure on one point and gone snap got a couple of spare
06:35pins like in the cab of the old one so with any luck they might fit but I'm not holding me breath
06:40we really need the excavator pressures on us more than it's ever been before we are absolutely stuffed
06:52without it Cooper Pedy South Australia the opal capital of the world but this harsh landscape doesn't
07:05give up its treasures easily it's the worst thing ever now we're two good them two excavators both
07:13sitting it side by side and all the one can dig us a freaking hole we just have to pull it off take
07:18it into town and hopefully get it fixed in a season already plagued by mechanical failure the black
07:27gliters did you slip off or did that yeah I slipped off mark I Anson what a nightmare yep Paul Coon
07:35yeah we'll cut the bolt off and John Nasser in between breaking stuff they've actually done some
07:40work have now broken the hardened steel pin that mounts the digging bucket to the excavator arm do you
07:49reckon that other pin will fit I don't know sun shining at the moment but these clouds are looking a
07:55big hope for the best that we don't get too much rain and it shuts us down for a couple of days
08:00pins for this one but they're not going to fit it's not a good day that thing snapped is nasty
08:07good people of Cooper Pedy have come to the rescue and we found a pin for the excavator so
08:19it's stuck in this big big thing here so we just got to get it out first which is that's the first
08:25mission not liking our chances too much coming for an adelaide probably been easy we probably
08:35would have just gone down to a dealer and just pick one up brand new here's what it is it'll keep
08:38us going hopefully and we've got ourselves a second hand pin so hopefully we can get that all tuned up
08:50we get this thing running get back to digging come around the other side yep you might have to get
08:56up there's a lot of hard lifting to get this in by the looks of it she's slippery too yeah just watch
09:03out because it's heavy right really don't let it fall back or forward all right bring it over get going
09:11bit more yep can you give that a smackin keep going keep going yep it's coming
09:24it's gone yeah
09:34last time we got about 29 grand for the week pretty lucky actually back out here this week
09:40see if we can double it triple it hey let's see how we go we did set the target at 350,000 again this
09:47year so we've got a long way to go but boys are over here digging down to the level I think we're on a
09:55good spot here I reckon it's finally gonna pay for us we don't want to just pay the bills we want to
10:00we want to strike it and be filthy rich like that's the honest goal for every opal miner
10:06well get sick of this weather sitting around in this crap don't know what to do man maybe we
10:21should go out and just have a look I'm not taking the machine down the hill if it's wet
10:25nah if it's wet and dangerous we won't do it all right let's go let's do it let's go waste some more diesel
10:31no it doesn't matter just go over look
10:33that might be it for a while that is a big bottle a lot of water man this looks right you know what
10:48it gets like as soon as we turn off I don't think we'll make it that's it's today it's one day man
10:54well we're going to get some money somehow this week because it doesn't look like we're going to
10:57pull any out the ground while it's like this we're in a lot of strife man
11:00the last bit is they're fingers crossed and technically should be good to go
11:17and amooka south australia at their lunatic claim mining partners angel dempsey and izzy glenn
11:26are battling against aging machinery all right izzy i think it's time fire it up see if she'll
11:34work no worries the key's in it yep quite a few months since it's ran so quite exciting and
11:41nerve-wracking at the same time
11:43what try again that's not good uh the excavator i ended up blowing a drive motor on it
11:54at the end of last season so she's been out for quite a long time
11:59the team are struggling to keep their mining operation alive
12:06after financier and mentor opal joe kalmar was forced to take medical leave i'll basically
12:13step back because my health's up creek too many strokes so i've stepped back and hoping that angel
12:21can take over everything working with joe's give me the confidence to be able to believe in myself and
12:26make things actually happen i'll come to end the movie not knowing a thing about opal and now we can
12:32actually find it
12:38it's got to be potentially something wrong here oh hang on we can two wires have pulled out of this plug
12:47here so this is for the fuel cutoff solenoid which would be why she's got no diesel
12:53oh she's squeezed as tight as i can in there hopefully that holds just enough to get her to start
13:07pretty certain i found the problem she'll give her a whirl see what happens
13:11ah-ha yes that's a good noise to hear and hopefully it'll move
13:24she moves so our season target is around about 300 mark
13:31you know nice round figure and i need to find it without that money the gym's dead in the water
13:37we've set this gym up so that kids veer away from drugs and alcohol
13:49i've been there myself you know i'm clean now 15 years and sober
13:55you know that takes a bit of money let alone the fact of taking these kids away for boxing events and
14:00we do have one coming up in august at golden gloves without that money we're not going anywhere we're
14:08stuck in adelaide
14:13a lot of that to move a lot of opal to find
14:18and the pressure's certainly on for izzy and i this season you know we're a man down
14:23so i'm gonna have to work twice as hard to find the opal
14:29oh too hard
14:33so damn rocky
14:35izzy's down at the shaft hoping to find some fast opal we call it because you're already at the level
14:41there never used to be quite keen on this but since i've started going down mine shafts i absolutely
14:48love it there down here on jack hammering to reach another shaft at the other end
14:54and hopefully find open along the way which will be awesome
15:02just gonna have a quick look with the black light
15:06yeah to move the opal glows in the dark it's a job that we don't like to rush because if you rush this
15:12job what will happen is you'll miss all the trace in the wall
15:27i actually feel some vibration angel's only about probably 10 meters away from me on the excavator
15:34quite scary when you're leaning up against a wall like that and being 25 foot under the ground
15:42good looking ground
15:49come on when i get to the level i'm gonna have to get easy here to be my spotter
16:04angel angel you there yeah what's up i just had a chunk of
16:10fall on top of me you're right i don't think it's um real safe at the moment
16:18well that was a bit so what happened oh i had a big chunk of dirt and rocks fall down on my head
16:23down there yeah i think it's just all that vibration i guess shut that down and we'll get
16:28you in the open cut sounds like a good plan yeah being in a mine shaft it's not for everybody
16:34it's if there was a cave in yeah i'd be history down there
16:44the open cut i'm doing is one of the longest ones in andamooka roughly about 200 meters long
16:51what i'm going to do i'm going to get in the middle of the cut
16:54and with this excavator if we're able to create a bit of a working face which allows us to be able
17:01to find this open
17:06what's the ground nothing like is he it's got a really rich patch here all right sounds good
17:12for whatever reasons the ground has shifted hopefully as a crevice at the opal and its liquid
17:21form has fell in and it's gotten to the bottom and over the millions of years it's hardened so i'll
17:26focus on going a bit deeper yep and i'll put this dirt in its own little spot so we can look through
17:32it later so many blind spots in these big machines where's izzy there she is very important for me to
17:53know where izzy is all the time
18:13looks like the rain's finally stopped so now nature can draw it out for us so we can find some bloody
18:18opal we've only found about 50 grand this year so you know it's not really enough at this stage
18:25since we've set the target at 350. but hey johnny's an opal villa
18:35yeah i mean opal zilla's good for giving us a few bucks after it's gone through the tumble comes
18:40off the shaker it comes into the dark green belt which is this running here opal fluoresces under the
18:46blacklight so that's a small bit you sort of see it to sort of line up a bit
18:52it's about like a i don't know maybe quarter of a bucket it would be nice if the boys over there
18:56start bringing out some chunks but um at the moment we're paying bills
19:02we're burning probably 500 a day so finding no money you go broke pretty quick
19:06at the moment we're using the digging power of the excavator to dig the ground
19:16and then the pushing power of the dozer to push the dirt all the way up the hill and out of the way
19:22gone for good i'm pretty confident we can move enough dirt to get down to the opal we were fawning last
19:28season just checking the face at the moment you know just scrape the walls don't want to miss it
19:36worked too hard to get this far to throw it away
19:44because if you're chipping away chipping away you'll hear the opal go kink
19:48we got a bit of trace here blue
19:58some purpley blue millions of years ago coober pd was covered by the erramanga sea
20:07over time silica rich water drained into the earth filling voids in the porous bedrock and hardening to
20:15form opal a couple of chips always a good sign some nice blue green crystal there it's only thin
20:25but it's only just started it's getting fatter in the wall behind me so go have a bit of a dig
20:30what are you doing blew a hose man the same as what happened a few weeks back on the front yeah i
20:46can't move it man the hydraulic oil's just gonna go the hose has gone bang and it's put oil over
20:51everything beyond yep up there bloody hell that's not gonna work
21:05go and grab the shovel for me please so we've got a rock jammed up in between the barrel
21:11and the conveyor belt it's actually rolled in underneath lifted up the whole barrel and
21:15only further the barrel clean off that's a close call always something
21:24it's never ending show really i think he's really jammed
21:35righto mate this is actually only just sitting on the rollers if that falls off
21:42we need to spread it there goes our season
21:46i need the money to sustain the momentum of this mining operation so we do it because we love it
21:51but it would be good to take a little bit and keep it in that back pocket this time around
21:57at the moment while the george is running the more we feed it the more opal we're going to get
22:00okay right you're there yeah mate yeah this conveyor is definitely slowing down that's for sure
22:13maybe turn that track up a little bit so we've got a bit more flow now i'll turn the revs up mate
22:18we've got a massive oil leak on the back end here now you're kidding me is it coming out of one of the
22:38hoses no mate she's coming out of the seals man i can see it from here what the pump seal
22:44yeah the pump seals ah for sake the hydraulic pump on the tractor it runs all three hydraulic
22:52motors on george yeah take a look you can see it all from underneath there
22:58we just keep this going the way it is man we'll end up blowing the pump up
23:02oh doing some major damage so it's a massive fix it is frustrating all we can do is try and give it
23:08a fix and let's rip off this end and get it sealed up i'm just going to knock these pins out this is
23:15not going to be easy at all yeah this is the major thing that's actually going to hold us right up right
23:22now so these pins haven't been moved for 60 70 years so pretty much welded in there
23:28no that's not coming at all we promised this year that was going to get her a nice big parcel
23:36and um right now at the moment we're not making any money
23:48i'm not going to break anything else for at least a week hopefully not but everything's so slippery
23:53i just don't want to slip off no don't slip man
23:58just gotta manipulate the sucker because it's tight you don't want to cross thread the
24:09it's gone
24:16there that's it hold that
24:20fill her up turn her on plug and play and off we go we're back in the playground
24:29we've been up here for weeks just moving dirt moving dirt moving dirt we need to really get down to
24:36where the opal is you know about another eight foot to the hard base the alanite
24:47yeah this is alanite here this is your stopper it's like a chalky but it's super hard excavator
24:54doesn't like digging it but you know that was the stopper so when the opal and the water the silica
24:59ran down it had somewhere to bottom out and pull up never know what could happen could be going home
25:06loaded or broke i'm like that vertical way yeah watch that vertical that could turn to color any minute man it looks killer
25:14all right that could totally turn to color
25:25oh
25:27oh
25:28oh it's getting thicker
25:31careful careful go slow man go slow
25:35oh it's turning green at the back there look it's definitely good to find some color
25:39little bits of shells everywhere where you've been hiding all these years
25:49in here that is sat there for 400 million years paul this is bloody good man there could be more i just
25:55can't wait to see what's going to be on there's got to be more man there's got to be more
26:03oh hang on hang on a minute
26:06that's a chunk look at the color in it hello hello hello that is young oh look another bit
26:16dude we're talking some money with this that is young yeah look look look look more oh oh that's
26:22one of our best chunks we've ever found in a wall look at that yeah look at that
26:36couple of grand an ounce there mate bit of blacklighters live cream but there's plenty more in the bucket
26:41yeah
26:51yeah like grab the slings there mate we've got to hook it up before i take these pins out
26:56at their government tank claim roger and lee are fixing a crippling oil leak by removing a hydraulic
27:03pump from the aging tractor which powers their dry rumbler we're pretty much well stuffed the tractor runs
27:10all three hydraulic motors on george all right you're gonna jump in the cab dla yeah we're using
27:18the big digger to um hook these slings and chain on the back end of that backhoe coming up and get that
27:24pump off and get it sealed up all right i'll get you up there's four pins on the back of that tractor
27:31what's keeping that backhoe on there once we take the weight off uh those pins the whole thing should
27:38slide out all right take weight coming up whoop that should get it try and knock those pins out yep
27:50oh yeah the pins are coming out a lot easier now
27:52all right slow left
28:01yes it goes
28:07yeah exactly what i like to see so i reckon we come back tomorrow and we might be actually up and running
28:14lunch time oh come on let's go back to work boys yep now we're gonna pull the pump off itself
28:27put a sealant on it i'm just hoping nothing's gonna fall out
28:31oh it's one of those ones where the bearings just sit in there oh no each one of those bearings is
28:41singly slotted in it's not in a bearing case so when you go to pick it back up you'll be very very
28:46careful if one of them pops out or anything you gotta do that again
28:51i'm trying to get this done before this bloody sealant starts drying out that's him mate yeah
29:00that dust is no good far out where's that toggle clock it's coming from all that fine dust off
29:05george all over this we don't want to get any dust on the seal job
29:09oh man ball bears keep falling in
29:26it's absolutely really jing me at the moment
29:37oh my god
29:46it took some patience you're a more patient man than me that's for sure i was near ready to give up
29:52all right lee we're going to start running
30:07this is what gypsum does to you
30:13hammering away here at the at the wall and didn't realize there was a massive boulder up the top
30:19one of those donks you on the head it's good night
30:29something hard down there watch out for falling boulders is he i will
30:35the vibration of that machine you know a lot of the time the dirt is loose up the top of these cuts
30:41and they're likely to fall on your head i'm just gonna knock some boulders off the wall on my left
30:46i'm just gonna knock some boulders off the wall on my left
30:56oh sparkle
31:02wow you might want to stop angel got some pretty color here
31:11look at the crystal in that oh my god have a look got a crystal opal vein running through it
31:23awesome we'll go through the tailings and we'll go hunting that is so cool
31:30a couple times i scraped up so it could be anywhere it's very much like trick-or-treating turn over a
31:38rock and you don't know what's underneath it hello color where are you
31:41oh is he full of purple look at that all right there's got to be more here somewhere there's gotta
31:56be more in here oh angel oh that is so pretty you got color look at that oh my god it's only little
32:07but look at the color in it and you oh oh oh look at that oh look at the purple what is school for
32:22i've got to keep hunting until the sun goes down because
32:24escapade has done an awesome job at you know uncovering it and burying it again
32:29we've found quite a bit today we have
32:32there's some nice bits in there yeah there are john's done really well this week again some of
32:41this stuff here like that big stone we found it where was its mates it come on its own just a few
32:48little chips around look at all these mates here this came around yeah the black lighters have a mixed
32:53parcel of white and crystal opal with opalized shells featuring the full spectrum of colors it's in the
33:01rough and weighs 540 grams all right right well um you've had a good look at these three parcels
33:09what do you think we're running how much money we're going to get for this um
33:18after having a good look at all the parcels and doing a few calculations
33:23i reckon we're sitting at about 20 grand with the parcel that you've put aside
33:27we're sitting at about 30 grand here sitting on about 20 grand with the shells that he's faced up
33:34there so so we're running 30 20 20. so we're talking 70 years i reckon yeah 70 grand that's
33:44black light is at their best it really is we're on fire man that is insane we've made you proud rage
33:51bloody oh especially after all the breakdowns been a tough week up here everyone
34:02that was a bloody good week man pull off that sort of amount of money
34:06with everything trying trying its best to stuff us up yeah pull fixing that pin mate i know you snapped
34:13it in the first place but to fix it as good as you did yeah that was a huge comeback man of the
34:17match well bloody darn well done there aye i just feel just like satisfied just well done yeah
34:25well cheers to a good week a good week people yeah that was me
34:30i've had a sugar cook going for a few days now so what we're going to do is we're going to
34:51put the sugar stones out just give them a quick wipe over because you want to get them in the acid
34:59as soon as possible okay so now we're gonna go and pop them in acid for a good three four hours
35:07at her workshop izzy glenn is acid treating part of the team's find of andamooka matrix limestone
35:16impregnated with precious opal to reveal the color stones are immersed in a sugar solution
35:24and then cooked in acid
35:29we always do acid outside due to the nasty fumes of sulfuric acid
35:35i am going to just gently lower it into my acid and let my container fill up because we don't want
35:45that container to tip over beautiful pop the lid on and wait for a few hours and see what we get
36:04i'm just going to drain it all out are you seeing a color already i can see green and purple okay i'm
36:14just going to pop them in some bicarb water
36:17oh yeah she bubbling give them about five minutes and have a look to see what pretties we've got
36:28just give them a quick rinse off
36:30oh look at them oh this one's a beauty it's a little crystal opal in it definitely going in the money
36:41piles oh look at this one
36:43oh that's the king stone now that's what we're talking about izzy we just need a few more of these
36:53we'll be right what we'll do is we'll weigh the money stones okay might have to add them up
37:01oh that's 138 grams the misfits have matrix opal featuring blues greens and purples with flashes
37:12of yellow and red the stones have been treated weighing a total of 138 grams so what do you reckon
37:20if you would i'd be happy you know quick sale 10 grams so all up i'd be happy with 1800 including the
37:33low-grade stuff not huge week for us however enough to buy diesel keep on going the lunatic is looking
37:41pretty damn good it is and quite certain we're going to find a big one pretty damn soon
37:45oh what a week we've had hey it's been pretty damn good all the bush fixes have worked and a little

39:34That'll hatch!
39:35Yeah, that's...
39:36Yes!
39:37That's decent size.
39:38Yes!
39:40I've been sitting there for millions and millions of years.
39:43When it comes to this moment, finding this beautiful, cracking little piece, your heart
39:48skips a little bit of a beat.
39:49Can't wait to get back and actually cutting that big stone.
39:54Uncut as it is, that'd be a thousand dollar money, easily.
40:02That could potentially turn into three to four thousand, or it could turn into absolutely
40:08nothing.
40:09I think I started when I was around about 12 years old, and I was cutting and selling
40:15for the local local buyers around town.
40:17Then I got a real passion for cutting.
40:19You'll see these little sand spots on either end.
40:24They're little things that degrades the stone.
40:26I sit there and I'll cut them off.
40:28I'm actually forming the stone a little bit.
40:34One way then, against the option for the other buyer, and the way that they actually
40:38want to cut the stone themselves.
40:40A lot of the local buyers book out a room for a couple of days a week at the local buying
40:47motel.
40:48And here we are.
40:49I've known Sissy for a long time.
40:51She's always been quite fair.
40:53Big week, so hopefully it pays off.
40:55There's some nice pieces in there.
40:57I don't think we should take anything less than eight grand.
41:00Yep.
41:01Here's the deal sweetener right here.
41:02It's all the chips out of the buckets.
41:04So these are the slim pickings.
41:06They're not quite cuttable stones.
41:07They'll break them up, put them in little vials or in little trinkets or whatnot.
41:12They're a beautiful colour.
41:13I've been tumbling now for the last few days, so they come up nice and clean.
41:17Hello.
41:18How are you, Sissy?
41:19Very well, thank you.
41:21Glad to meet you, your mum.
41:23Pleased to come in.
41:26My mug is always after the top, top, briny stone.
41:31Alright, Sissy.
41:32So we did promise you a few stones.
41:34Oh.
41:38That's her look.
41:43Nice colour.
41:45Lee and Roger have a mixed parcel of black and grey based opal.
41:50Predominantly blue-green in colour with flashes of yellow and red.
41:54It's partially rubbed and weighs 53 grand.
41:58Could you please let me know the price?
42:00I really don't want to take any less than eight.
42:02Tell you the truth.
42:03All together?
42:04Mm-hmm.
42:05This would be hard for me to make any profit here.
42:10Could make $7,000.
42:12Mm-hmm.
42:13I've got a deal sweetener here.
42:19Big jar of Slim Pickens chips.
42:22Wow.
42:23Will come down 500.
42:25So, seven and a half.
42:32Deal.
42:33Yep.

42:51Thank you, Sissy.
42:52Bye.
42:53Sissy wasn't going to budge from $7,000.
42:54So, we pulled out the deal sweetener, which made a smile.
42:57And yeah, we made the deal.
43:03So, you boys have been bussed on your rear ends all week.
43:06Oh, mate.
43:07My back is so sore.
43:09Yeah, our great artesian basin is directly underneath us.
43:12And it brings up hot water about 40, 41 degrees.
43:15Mate, we all need this.
43:18Hot volcanic water.
43:19Two million years old.
43:21Bloody beautiful, mate.
