00:00Though Capitoleo is just a small neighborhood in Paseg, it is jam-packed with things to do and places to eat.
00:06So we take a moment to explore this bustling area of the city.
00:11The first stop in our adventure is at the Beach House for some coffee and breakfast.
00:17So Beach House comprises of three floors.
00:19There's the cafe, which is the first two floors, and then a bar on the third floor.
00:23Today we are here in the cafe to have coffee and pastries.
00:26So we're starting the day with coffee and pastries.
00:29Here we have the salted caramel coffee, as well as the cheese puff and the ube cheese puff.
00:37So this here is a secret menu item that they have.
00:40It's the strawberry cream.
00:41It's good, it's fresh, it can still taste the coffee.
00:45It's a nice, sweet way to start your day.
00:46After our breakfast, we stop by one of the shops we can find here in Capitoleo.
00:51Now before we head to the rest of our food crawl, we make a quick stop here at San San to check out some fragrances.
00:59San San San is a fragrance shop that doesn't shy away from its Filipino roots.
01:04With scents that help evoke the essence of a space, their products help complete the ambience of a place.
01:10Or take you back to locations you may or may not have even been to.
01:16This place is a must visit for anyone looking to bring more character to their spaces.
01:22After stopping to smell the candles, we head out for lunch.
01:25Lunch takes us to one of the original establishments here in Capitoleo, Cafe Juanita.
01:34For the longest time, Capitoleo was a residential area.
01:36So this building was put up around 1960, 1970 as a house until the owners bought it around the 2010s.
01:43Every nook and cranny is filled with the owner's collection.
01:46So you can really see his character and all the stories come out in the displays here.
01:51So when you're here, you're not just here for the good food, you're also here for the ambience.
01:56But speaking of the good food, we have here some of their best sellers, which is the kare kare, the crispy lapu-lapu with green mango,
02:03and the Filipino staple, the crispy pata.
02:07So we're going to try some of it today.
02:09That classic, comfortable kare kare flavor comes out.
02:12Vegetables are very fresh.
02:13Bagong is perfect with it.
02:15Absolutely love it.
02:15Now, of course, we have to try the crispy pata.
02:17Not only a staple in Filipino cuisine, but a centerpiece in whatever meal that you're having.
02:23Again, classic flavors of crispy pata.
02:26So I'm very comfortable, very, absolutely love it.
02:28If you're looking for crispy pata here in Capitoleo, this is the place to go.
02:32And now something a little bit different, fried lapu-lapu with green mango.
02:35Very well, the green mango comes out.
02:37The tang of the green mango is such a good accent to the fish.
02:42So those are just some of the dishes here at Cafe Juanita.
02:44Everything so far has been wonderful and comfortable Filipino food.
02:49But before we move on, we have a second part of our lunch right next door.
02:57The second part of our lunch takes us to Haru Sushi Bar and Restaurant just next door from Cafe Juanita.
03:02The owners are the same, so the vibe is very similar but with a more Japanese aesthetic.
03:07So in front of me, we have the sushi, sashimi, and the sukiyaki.
03:12One of the things I love about Haru is as a sushi bar, their sushi is fresh and prepared in front of the customer.
03:20But the quality doesn't stop there.
03:22The sukiyaki was also top-notch and tasted amazing.
03:25If you're out to have two lunches, Cafe Juanita and Haru are excellent choices to do so.
03:30Now that we've had some Japanese dishes, we head to the side streets of Capitolio for some Pakistani cuisine.
03:37Excited to try these dishes as I love Pakistani cuisine.
03:41So in front of us, we have the chicken korma, the beef biryani, and the hummus.
03:46Start with the hummus.
03:47The hummus really shines through.
03:52The paratha has a nice crunch to it.
03:54Now for the beef biryani.
03:56Oh, look at that bite.
03:57A healthy amount of rice, biryani rice, some beef.
04:01The vibrance of the flavor and it's really there.
04:03From the rice, the beef, the sauce, everything is so vibrant, everything is so flavorful.
04:08It's so good.
04:09I love it.
04:09Absolutely love it.
04:11Now something I haven't tried before is the chicken korma.
04:14They're lovely.
04:16The chicken is tender.
04:18Again, the sauce is very, very fresh with the cilantro and the whatever to put in it.
04:23It's so good.
04:24Absolutely love it.
04:25It's a little bit off the beaten path, away from the main road, but I think this kandan is somewhere that's worth visiting.
04:34Before we head out to our next resto, we're heading to Wabi Sabi for a quick afternoon activity.
04:39So we're taking a break from our food crawl to try out other things to do in Capitolio.
04:46So we're here to take a class at Wabi Sabi Pottery Studio.
04:50Wabi Sabi, named after the Japanese concept of finding beauty in imperfection, is a ceramic studio located here in Capitolio.
04:57Their goal is to allow people the chance to try their hand at pottery.
05:02I tried taking a class as a beginner, and their instructors guided me through the process of creating my pottery piece.
05:08Which started with my instructor giving me a quick demonstration, then I was guided through creating my own work.
05:13This was loads of fun, and the environment also lends itself well to beginners and advanced pottery classes alike.
05:18So here's my final product.
05:22Well, they're going to fire this first before they let me know once it's ready.
05:26But here it is, after the class.
05:28Now that we're done with this activity, it's off to dinner for the penultimate stop of our crawl.
05:33With our pottery class done, we go back to our food crawl here at Lao Taipei.
05:37Now, I absolutely love Taiwanese food, and I can't think of a better place to have it here in Capitolio than in Lao Taipei.
05:46And this spread in front of me is some of their staples.
05:49We have the beef noodles, the oyster pancakes, the chicken popcorn, and of course, their shaolong bao.
05:56We'll start with the oyster pancakes.
06:02Absolutely love it.
06:03The oyster is a good texture for the egg.
06:05You can taste the seafood really coming out.
06:07Now we'll go for the chicken popcorn.
06:11Cheers.
06:15It kind of takes me back to my childhood a little bit.
06:18Where, you know, you go to the movie theater, for example, you have some snacks, you got chicken poppers with you.
06:23But elevate it to a different level.
06:26Alright, now some of their mains.
06:28We have the beef noodles.
06:30This is good.
06:31I'm excited for this one.
06:32The broth is very beefy, but light.
06:39It's not too heavy.
06:40It's so nice.
06:40The beef really shines.
06:42Absolutely love the dish.
06:43But before we go, we will end this meal with a dessert.
07:09For dessert, we have their custard pie.
07:12Mmm.
07:15Lovely sweet custard inside.
07:20Works so well.
07:21I love it.
07:24Anyway.
07:24That's now Taipei.
07:28On to our next location.
07:30We are capping off our food crawl here at St. Patrick's.
07:34We have here beef salpicao, tofu sisig, and a nice cold one.
07:40The beef salpicao is bursting with flavor and pairs very well with the beer.
07:46So if you want something a little bit healthier with your beer, you have some tofu sisig.
07:52I love how the tofu is soft inside and crispy on the outside.
07:56You can really taste the flavor of the fixins.
08:01Really good.
08:01I like it.
08:03And now we wash it all down with a big mug of beer.
