00:00Perikatan National MPs have declined to support Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's call to
00:08establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry or RCI into judicial appointments. Perikatan's Chief
00:15Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed that several MPs from the bloc received a letter from
00:22Rafizi on July 9, urging their support for his initiative to safeguard the integrity of the
00:28judiciary. While Perikatan MPs acknowledge Rafizi's concern over the Prime Minister's exclusive power
00:36in judicial appointments, a view consistent with the opposition's broader position,
00:41they disagree with the proposal to set up an RCI. Takiyuddin explained that any RCI would fall under
00:49the discretion of the Prime Minister who must advise the King in such matters. He argued that this
00:55makes the proposal ineffective, particularly if the Prime Minister himself becomes a subject of the
01:01inquiry. He also pointed out that Cabinet approval, which is led by the Prime Minister, would be
01:08required, further complicating the process. Earlier, on July 7, Rafizi, together with several senior PKR MPs,
01:17called for the formation of both an RCY and a Parliamentary Special Select Committee to address
01:24what they described as a growing crisis in the judiciary, as a number of senior judges are expected to leave
01:30the bench in the coming months.
