00:01Neighbors, everybody needs good neighbors. With a little understanding, you can find the perfect plan.
00:16Neighbors should be there for one another. That's when good neighbors become good friends.
00:37I'm sorry.
00:39I don't know what to do. I've fallen in love with my own daughter's fiance.
00:45You're shocked. It's hardly surprising.
00:53You better tell me everything.
00:57Well, it all started so simply.
01:03Rosemary was occupied with her business.
01:07One of the big oil companies had commissioned a painting from Gerard, which he'd finished, so he had plenty of time.
01:13And as Rosemary's fiance, it was only good manners that he should show me around.
01:18He took me to all the art galleries, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan, the Frick, and dozens of small places of Greenwich Village.
01:27He's older than Rosemary. We had a lot in common. There's Lucy.
01:33I had a room. And Scott's competing with William Shakespeare, so it's okay. We ought to talk this through.
01:39Well, one afternoon I was to meet him at the Whitney Museum in Madison Avenue.
01:46He was late. Not just a few minutes. Forty minutes late.
01:51So when I sat there, I realized that he wasn't coming. I felt so let down.
01:58Then a knot of people parted, and there he was.
02:03And it was then I knew. I was amazed, horrified even, that it didn't seem to matter.
02:12It was my secret, and something very private to bring home with me.
02:18Then a few days later, he was bringing me home in a taxi, and he took my hand, and we looked at each other, and I knew he felt the same way, too.
02:30So I ran away. I packed my bags and came home without even consulting him.
02:34And I thought that was going to be the end of it, but he keeps ringing and writing and insisting that he loves me, and I know that's true.
02:45The wedding. That's still going ahead by the sounds of it.
02:48Rosemary thinks it's going ahead.
02:52But Gerard is as hurt as I am. I know he's stalling.
02:58Shouldn't you see him try to resolve this? No.
03:00Why not?
03:04How can I choose between Gerard and my own daughter?
03:12More coffee, Harold. Oh, no. No, thank you.
03:14More gâteau.
03:15Oh, thank you, but I shouldn't.
03:16Well, there's some chicken casserole in the oven. Perhaps you'd like a little of that.
03:19Didn't your father tell you that I'd become vegetarian?
03:21No.
03:22No, I can't say you did.
03:24Oh, felt much healthier since I've given up meat.
03:27Well, the cake was wonderful.
03:29And that is a beautiful coffee set.
03:31Oh, it's very old. We use it all the time.
03:33That's quiet.
03:35Yeah, right.
03:36I know a little about China, and whoever bought this has got excellent taste.
03:40It is rather pretty.
03:41Hmm.
03:42It's a pity more people about here don't appreciate it.
03:44Well, if nobody wants any more coffee, excuse me, Shane.
03:48Well, how about a port to top things off?
03:50Oh, no, thank you, Shane. I don't drink. Never did take to the taste of the stuff.
03:54Oh, no wonder you write so highly Mom's good books.
03:56Do I?
03:57Uh, Harold, how long are you staying in town?
04:00Oh, well, now that is in the lap of the gods.
04:02Now that I've sold the stock and station agency, I'm looking for something different.
04:07So I may stay in Ironsborough.
04:09Oh.
04:10Yes, well, time I was pushing off, I think.
04:13Oh, yes, you must be tired after all that travelling.
04:16Where are you staying?
04:17Uh, Lasseter's. It's just a stroll down the road there.
04:20Nice enough place, but a little bit on the pricey side.
04:24That's Paul Robinson. Can't complain, though. Mom works there.
04:27Really? What are you doing?
04:29Uh, I am on the retail side.
04:31Uh, yes, Paul does charge that little bit extra, but it's to maintain the standard of the clientele.
04:37People like yourself, Harold.
04:39Oh, thank you, Madge. And thank you for a delightful evening.
04:42I hope I see more of you while I'm here.
04:44Oh, yes, of course. Um, would you care to join us for lunch tomorrow?
04:48There's not much to do in Ironsborough on a Sunday, apart from go to church, that is.
04:52May I join you? In the church? You were planning on going, Madge?
04:56Oh, yes, yes, of course. Well, that would be very nice.
04:58If you come around here, say, 9.45.
05:00I'll be here. All right, then, till tomorrow. Bye-bye.
05:03Goodbye, Harold. Bye.
05:05You really planning on going to church tomorrow, Madge?
05:09I often go to church, and it wouldn't do you any harm to go occasionally, Shane Ramsey.
05:14You really like Harold, don't you? All the good china and stuff.
05:17If a person can't make a visitor feel welcome, there's not much charity left in the world, is there?
05:21Couldn't agree more, Aunty Match.
05:23I will do the washing up.
05:24Yes, well, you be careful of my good china.
05:26I suppose the simplest thing would be to have a few days away.
05:30Well, I've been promising myself a sketching trip to the mountains.
05:35That's not the answer, Helen, and you know it.
05:38Anyway, you're probably worrying about nothing.
05:40If Rosemary's ready to set the wedding day, then Gerard's almost certainly made up his mind.
05:43No.
05:44Well, why not?
05:45Well, his letters.
05:47I know he'll contact me. I know he will.
05:50Well, I don't see you have any alternative but to see him.
05:55You could do it for me.
05:58You could explain, tell him he should go ahead with the wedding.
06:03Why should he take any notice of anything I have to say?
06:05Well, if I won't see him, he has to.
06:07He has to be told that it's over.
06:11I'm the one coming between them.
06:14And if I'm determined not to see him, that'll prove it.
06:18Please, Jim.
06:22I'll see him, of course I will.
06:25I can't promise anything.
06:29Well, I'll try and find out where he's staying.
06:34He'll listen to you. I know he will.
06:38He has to.
06:45Hi.
06:46Hi.
06:47How's the writing coming along?
06:48Just great.
06:49But, Sunday's my day off.
06:52Even riders need a break, I guess.
06:54Ah, there we go.
06:56Now, is she looking fantastic or what, hey?
06:59You know, once there was Guy who married his motorbike.
07:02Maybe you should do the same.
07:04Very funny.
07:05Hey, how long are you going to be?
07:07What are you talking about?
07:08Well, you're the mechanic in this outfit.
07:10I've got the spotties, right?
07:12And I just need to get them fitted.
07:13See?
07:15Scott, I was hoping we could go to the beach today.
07:18As soon as you fitted the spotties.
07:19That's a fair exchange, I think.
07:21Can we ask Mike and Jane?
07:22Sure, no worries.
07:23It's more than merry, I guess.
07:24Hey, and listen, about the oil change you promised to do last week.
07:27Scott!
07:28Well, Charlene, you promised, remember?
07:29Okay, okay.
07:31The sooner we get it done, the sooner we can get going.
07:33Okay.
07:34Charlene, what on earth do you think you're doing?
07:36Get those groceries inside.
07:38Coming, Mum.
07:44Oh, and do get a move on, love.
07:45And if you wouldn't mind unpacking them, I'd be very grateful.
07:49Hi, Harold.
07:50Hi, Charlene.
07:51Hello, Manj.
07:52Oops.
07:53Good morning, Harold.
07:54Happy day.
07:55Harold, this is a friend of mine, Scott Robinson.
07:57Scott.
07:58Hello, Scott.
07:59Hi, Harold.
08:00How are you?
08:01Your car?
08:02Yep.
08:03Bit rough on spots, but she goes great.
08:04Oh, I remember my first vehicle.
08:07Exactly the same condition.
08:09Now you're a smart lad, Scott.
08:11Start off with a car on your own price range.
08:13Then when you move up market, there's a real sense of achievement.
08:16Not wrong.
08:17Well, Harold, I'm ready.
08:18What?
08:19And, sweetheart, there is cream in there, so if you wouldn't mind taking it inside.
08:22Sure, Mum.
08:23Bye-bye.
08:24See you later.
08:27Oh, he's a nice guy, isn't he?
08:30Do you reckon your mum's going to hit it off with him again, or?
08:32He's hoping.
08:33I'll get into my overalls.
08:34Yeah, okay.
08:35Oh, I don't believe it.
08:50Shane Ramsey sweeping the floors.
08:52Anything for the course?
08:53Can I have the paper?
08:54I had a bit of a flooding yesterday.
08:56It was hilarious out the front just now.
08:58Mum was having a real winch at me.
09:00Harold came along.
09:01She was all smiles.
09:02Oh!
09:03Don't add Jekyll and Hyde.
09:04Oh, well, every woman needs a man and a life.
09:06Every woman needs Harold, not Shane or Ramsey.
09:09Do anything?
09:10Ah, did my dough.
09:12Well, some people never learn.
09:14Make sure you don't miss that bit by the cupboard, either.
09:16Who's going to see it?
09:17Mum, that's who.
09:18She'd be having kittens the whole time Harold was here.
09:21Have you got any special plans for today?
09:24Oh, I'm going to the beach after I've done some work on Scott's car.
09:26Why?
09:27Well, I was hoping to spend a bit of time with Clive,
09:29but I've got to go down to the greenhouse.
09:31It's a bit urgent.
09:32Oh, no problem.
09:33Clive can come to the beach with Scott and me.
09:34Oh, thanks, Charlene.
09:35I reckon he needs all the company he can get at the moment.
09:37I'll pop in and see him a bit later.
09:39No, dustpan's in the cupboard.
09:40I was just going to get it.
09:42Oh, that's what I like to see.
09:44A man who knows his job.
09:46Oh, yeah.
09:47No!
09:48Dear Graham and Kay,
09:51now Susan and the baby have gone,
09:53I have time to catch up with some things I've been neglected,
09:55such as writing to my brother and his gorgeous wife.
09:58Susan and Sam are wonderful company,
10:00but I must admit the quiet is great.
10:02I'd never realised the extent
10:04which a baby takes over a household.
10:06I'm looking forward to getting on with some of those projects
10:09which will make the place more liveable,
10:10as well as adding to its value.
10:12It's hard to lay a new carpet with a baby only for me.
10:14Hi.
10:19Surprise.
10:20Hi.
10:21I hope we're not interrupting.
10:22No, I won't come in.
10:23We're going to the beach in a while.
10:24Do you want to come with us?
10:25I'd love to, but take a look at the place.
10:27Oh, we'll give you a hand, Cloney.
10:28I'm also way behind in correspondence.
10:30My family probably forgot I exist.
10:32Well, we're not leaving till after lunch.
10:33Yeah, thanks, but not today.
10:35Come on, Clive.
10:36You're always telling us it's no use sitting around brooding.
10:38Look, I appreciate the offer, but I'm not interested,
10:40so don't push it, okay?
10:42No worries.
10:43It's just a thought.
10:45Maybe next time, then.
10:46I'd like that.
10:47Okay.
10:48Bye.
10:49Bye.
10:50See you, Clive.
10:51How's the gardening?
10:52All finished.
10:53We're having lamb casserole for lunch.
10:54I'm doing one for Clive at the same time.
10:55I'm sure you'll appreciate that.
10:56I won't be here, I'm afraid.
10:57Ross and I are taking a client for lunch to the Go Club.
10:58Oh, I managed to locate Gerard.
10:59Oh, I managed to locate Gerard.
11:00I rang around the major hotels and he's staying at this one.
11:02I'm sure you'll appreciate that.
11:03I won't be here, I'm afraid.
11:04Ross and I are taking a client for lunch to the Go Club.
11:05Oh, of course I will.
11:06When?
11:07Dad!
11:08Can I take Basil for a run down at the Sewell Hotel?
11:09Wow.
11:10I've been here.
11:11It's a good day.
11:12Well, the business is about the Sewell Hotel.
11:14That's the most important thing.
11:15So I'm sure you'll appreciate that.
11:16I won't be here, I'm afraid.
11:17Ross and I are taking a client for lunch to the Go Club.
11:21Oh, I managed to locate Gerard.
11:24I rang around the major hotels and he's staying at this one.
11:28You will speak to him, Jim, please?
11:32Of course I will.
11:33When?
11:34Dad, can I take Basil for a run down at the park?
11:37Oh, darling, the smell.
11:39Get Basil out of the house at once.
11:41A bath.
11:42We'll be running down at the park.
11:44I'll give him a bath after that.
11:47Now, Lucy.
11:47Yeah, now.
11:49Well, if I give Basil a bath now
11:52and we don't go down to the park,
11:54can I watch television?
11:55Give him a bath
11:58and we'll talk about television later.
12:00Okay.
12:01Thanks, Dad.
12:02That child will end up an international diplomat.
12:04Never give anything away without getting something in return.
12:06When will you speak to him?
12:08Well, I can hardly cancel this luncheon appointment.
12:10It could mean a big contract for us.
12:12Why don't I phone him right now?
12:13Oh, no, no, Jim, I couldn't dare to listen.
12:15On the phone, things can be misunderstood
12:17and I need to be certain.
12:19All right, I'll get changed and go straight away.
12:23I'm being a terrible sock, I know.
12:24And I'll report in before I go to the golf club.
12:28Thanks, Jim.
12:29Don't worry.
12:30You'll be fine.
12:30Working hard, Scott.
12:53Oh, Dad, just flat out, really.
12:59Where are you off to, anyway?
13:02Oh, I've just got some business to attend to.
13:07Keep up the good work, Charlene.
13:10Socket spanner.
13:12There you go.
13:13Socket spanner!
13:15Scott!
13:16Hey, what?
13:17Are you supposed to be helping me?
13:19Socket spanner.
13:20Why didn't you say so?
13:22Lovely servants.
13:23I'm so relevant.
13:25The servant must be worthy of his hire.
13:27I mean, it's a text for the times, right?
13:29We've all got to roll our sleeves up like these two lads here.
13:33How's it going, Scott?
13:34Oh, fine, thanks.
13:36Hey, Harold.
13:37Charlene, what on earth are you doing?
13:39Changing the oil in Scott's car.
13:41What's it look like?
13:42I'm going to be mechanic.
13:43Well, you're certainly making a flying start at it.
13:46Don't take any notice of her, Harold.
13:47She's just playing around.
13:49I am not.
13:50Charlene.
13:51Well, Harold, I think that's a bit to go inside.
13:54I must get started on lunch.
13:57Charlene, do change and scrub up before lunch.
14:00There's a lot.
14:01That's how Harold decides to stick around.
14:04Probably about this good for a month.
14:06Oh, no, it's like living in a garbage tip.
14:13Oh, yes, I remember Shane offered to lend a hand.
14:16Sunday's a day of rest, Madge.
14:18Now, don't go to any trouble on my account.
14:19No trouble.
14:20Now, why don't you sit down and have a nice little read while I get the lunch?
14:23I'd much rather talk to a very charming lady.
14:26Oh, go on, if you want to sleep.
14:30Now, I thought I'd make a nice green salad and pumpkin jardiniere.
14:35It's a vegetarian dish.
14:36Oh, yes, it's my favourite.
14:37Oh, good.
14:38You can tell me if I'm doing it right.
14:40You're so feminine, Madge.
14:45And Charlene is just...
14:46Oh, well.
14:47I did have my doubts about her becoming a motor mechanic, but at least she knows what she
14:51wants to do, and that is a plus these days with everything so competitive.
14:54A lot of kids don't have a clue.
14:56I know.
14:57There's a lot to be said for a clear direction.
14:59It's just a...
15:00Well, I hope what she finds is what she expected.
15:03How do you mean?
15:04Well, garages and workshops, they're a world of their own, aren't they?
15:08I mean, nude calendars, tattoos, pubs after work, foul language...
15:13Yes, well, that had crossed my mind too, but she's such a headstrong girl here.
15:18And, er, she is very good with her hands.
15:21Well, has she thought about computers?
15:23Well, they need that sort of aptitude.
15:25Just give her plenty of options, that's all I'm saying.
15:27That certainly makes sense.
15:29Oh, it is nice to have a man's point of view, Harold.
15:33I think I must have another little chat with Charlene about her future.
15:38And this time I'll have to be a lot firmer with her.
15:51Lucy?
15:58Lucy?
16:00Lucy?
16:02You see, I told you to bath bath.
16:04Now get on with her, stop fooling her out.
16:09I went to the hotel, he wasn't there.
16:11He had no idea how long he was going to be.
16:13He could be out all day.
16:14And I do have that luncheon appointment to go to.
16:16But he may come here.
16:18Well, Helen, this is not like you.
16:21Jim, I love Rosemary and I love Gerard.
16:25And no matter what decision comes out of this, I...
16:28It means heartbreak for me.
16:30I'm prepared for that.
16:31I'm...
16:32I'm the intruder.
16:34All right, I'll phone Ross and cancel the appointment.
16:39But isn't there a contract involved?
16:41Ross can handle it.
16:42No, no, no.
16:43Jim, it was stupid of me.
16:44You were right.
16:45Just talking it through has helped.
16:47I'll be all right.
16:48Are you sure?
16:49Well, the children will be here to keep you company.
16:52Well, go on.
16:54I'll be back just because I can.
16:56You know, I just don't get a chance to practice my vegetarian cooking.
17:15My lot are the original barbarians.
17:17Well, you're doing splendidly, Madge.
17:19Uh-uh.
17:20Not even Mavis could have done as well.
17:22God rest her soul.
17:23Oh, thanks, Harold.
17:24You know, it must have been terrible for you being left with two young children.
17:28Oh, well, pretty much the same situation as yours.
17:31But fortunately, I had been careful with money so I could afford the extra help, you see.
17:35Ah, there you go, honey, Madge.
17:37Oh.
17:38Fresh from the greenhouse.
17:39G'day, mate.
17:40Hello, Shane.
17:41Oh, Shane.
17:43That's exactly what I need for the salad.
17:44What happened to our baked dinner?
17:45Well, we're having something healthy instead.
17:46Pumpkin jardinier.
17:47It's baked pumpkin stuffed with cheese sauce and vegetables on top of toasted almonds.
17:51It's delicious.
17:52We Australians eat far too much red meat.
17:54A healthy, high-fibre diet.
17:55That's exactly what you need.
17:56It's all right, Shane.
17:57Keep it in mind.
17:58And that's enough of your cleverness, young lady.
18:00Would you please go and change into something halfway decent?
18:02All right, all right.
18:03Give me a chance, Will.
18:04Yeah, well, don't take too long.
18:05Lunch won't be very long.
18:06What?
18:07Is that it?
18:08Yes.
18:09Yeah, yeah.
18:10It's really good for you, Charlene.
18:11It's full of high-fibre and lots of wholesome ingredients.
18:14None for me, thanks.
18:15What?
18:16Scott's taken me to the beach.
18:17We'll get something on our way.
18:18But not to worry.
18:19We'll polish off her, Shane.
18:21Won't we, Shane?
18:22Huh?
18:23Yeah, yeah, sure.
18:24No worries.
18:33Hello.
18:34Clive.
18:35Come in.
18:36I was just hurling myself into a frenzy of spring cleaning.
18:37By next week, there might have been unclean spring in the house.
18:39Doors, springs, beds, springs, everything.
18:41Save it for the kids, Clive.
18:43How have you been eating?
18:44I've made you this.
18:45Thanks, but honestly, I'm fine.
18:46Right as rain.
18:47So, any exciting news from the Robertson household?
18:50No, everything's fine.
18:52Oh, one of my favourites.
18:55Yeah, Susan's too.
18:57Take it, Helen.
18:58Please, I was certainly going to throw it out anyway.
19:03Gerard's in town.
19:04There's an exhibition of his paintings.
19:06Does anyone else know about you two?
19:08Yes, Jim, but no one else.
19:11Oh, Clive, I can't bear to face him.
19:13I couldn't say what needs to be said.
19:15I just don't have the strength to handle it.
19:18I'm sorry to burden you, but you're the only one I can discuss this with.
19:21Oh, I'm sorry.
19:22I've been so damn miserable, I forget other people have problems.
19:25So, what are you going to do about Gerard?
19:27I've asked Jim to see him.
19:29That should convince him that it's over.
19:31But it's not the only reason.
19:33Well, what is then?
19:35Well, I know that if I see him, I...
19:40I won't be able to stop myself from telling him how much I love him.
19:51It ain't clear, right?
19:52I didn't know what I would tell you.
19:53It was rude to sneak up on people, Helen.
19:54What are you doing skulking around here?
19:55Aunty Madge is cooking vegetarian.
19:56I needed a pie before I could face that stuff.
19:57Why vegetarian?
19:58Just wants to impress Harold.
19:59Oh, he's arrived, has he?
20:00What's he like?
20:01Not bad, not bad at all.
20:02Except that he's vegetarian.
20:03Charlene's already slithered out, so I have to eat it all, otherwise I'll never hear the
20:08end of it.
20:09And we're having lamb, so if you'd like to pop over later, I'll save yourself.
20:14Oh, thanks, but pie should see me through.
20:16Hey, Parker, you've got a visitor.
20:17It's Rosemary's fiance, Gerard Singer.
20:18He said to tell you that he can't wait to see her.
20:19Everybody needs good name, but we're going to be able to eat it all.
20:22And I'm not bad, not bad at all.
20:23Except that he's vegetarian.
20:24Charlene's already slithered out, so I have to eat it all, otherwise I'll never hear the
20:25end of it.
20:26And, um, we're having lamb, so if you'd like to pop over later, I'll save yourself.
20:28Oh, thanks, but pie should see me through.
20:30Hey, Parker, you've got a visitor.
20:33It's Rosemary's fiance, Gerard Singer.
20:35He said to tell you that he can't wait to see her.
20:38Everybody needs good name,
20:41Everybody needs good neighbors
20:46Just a friendly way each morning
20:51Helps to make a better day
20:56Neighbors

21:16Everybody needs good neighbors
21:20With a little understanding
21:24You can find the perfect plan
21:29Neighbors
21:32Should be there for one another
