00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo and today we're taking on the difficult task of ranking
00:08every Britney Spears album from worst to best. What's the Princess of Pop's
00:13signature song? Which record best defines her career? And how does each
00:20album hold up? Let's get to work, bitch.
00:30Number 9, Britney Jean. As huge Britney fans, it pains us to come down on any of her albums,
00:38but some simply have to sink to the bottom. There's a number of reasons why Britney Jean is
00:43her most critically panned and lowest selling record. Though shockingly, a lot of this isn't
00:48even her fault. Although it was promoted as Brit's most personal studio recording yet.
00:53I want to show you the different sides of who I am. I am a performer. I'm a mom.
01:00I'm funny. I'm your friend. I'm Britney Jean.
01:05The end result was pretty far from it.
01:08You're on a Lamborghini.
01:09Fit Martins.
01:11Look hot than a bikini.
01:13Partially produced by Will.i.am, there's an over-reliance on autotune.
01:18You make me feel like a billion, billion.
01:22Popular theories assert that backup vocalist Maya Marie filled in for Britney on a number
01:26of songs, which would mean there are some cases where Britney isn't even actually Britney.
01:31You're my brightest morning star.
01:36You're my brightest morning star.
01:40You're my brightest morning star.
01:45The album was rushed out to align with her 2013 Vegas residency, so execs may have been
01:50determined to prove they could make a Britney album without her full involvement.
01:54And they were terribly wrong.
01:56It's crazy.
01:57We have a load of work to do and very little time to bring this vision to reality.
02:04Outside of singles Work Bitch and maybe Perfume, there's sadly nothing memorable here.
02:10Ultimately, Britney Jean over-promised and under-delivered.
02:14I want to believe.
02:198. Femme Fatale
02:21Okay, this is where things get tough.
02:23Femme Fatale is beloved by so many fans, and it's an undeniably fun dance album.
02:28As for why it ranks so low on our list, the record simply has no true legacy.
02:38Femme Fatale was a big departure from her signature sound.
02:41The experimental design clearly rides the overproduced Max Martin, Dr. Luke EDM wave.
02:50Till the world ends and I Wanna Go are great party tracks for 2011.
03:03Like Britney Jean, Femme Fatale hasn't aged all that well, especially considering the
03:07lead single is a bit dubstep-influenced.
03:17To be clear, music failing to be timeless isn't inherently a problem.
03:22After all, Britney's early albums are so explicitly tied to the Y2K era.
03:26All I really want is to hold you tight, treat you right.
03:32However, the difference is that those records trailblazed a distinct style of pop and drove
03:37trends, whereas Femme Fatale simply chased trends.
03:41In fact, it feels a bit lost amongst albums by artists like Lady Gaga and Kesha, who were
03:46leading the charge with more authority at the time.
03:53You might be surprised to see the album that launched Britney into superstardom so low on
04:01the list, but that's just a testament to how many incredible LPs she has under her belt.
04:06Britney One More Time is best known for the single by the same name.
04:14But the 99 debut spawned a number of other chart-topping hits for the icon in the making.
04:25It holds impressive accolades, like the highest-selling album for a solo teenage artist of all time.
04:31It's Britney's highest-selling record, too.
04:37Although it made Britney a household name, it did receive some criticism for falling into
04:43the camp of immature teen pop.
04:45This is a bit of a stretch, though, considering Britney was just 16 when she released her first
04:50single.
04:51It was my first video, and I was really nervous about how the end results were gonna turn out.
04:56Perhaps the biggest issue with Baby One More Time is that, through a modern lens, it doesn't
05:00feel like the album is really for anyone anymore.
05:03Her early fans are all grown up, and likely relate more to her mature music.
05:08And the current Teenie Bop generation has moved on to the Billie Eilish's and Olivia Rodrigo's
05:12of the world.
05:17Britney's sophomore album confirmed that she was far from a one-hit wonder.
05:25It also refined the now-18-year-old's image from pigtails to latex.
05:33While the record does lean into some of the whimsical, daydreaming songs that made Baby One
05:37More Time pop, it has a sharper edge in its construction.
05:47There's a little less desperately wishing upon a star, and a lot more unapologetically reaching
05:56for the stars.
06:01From Britney's confidently-charged vocals to the fiercer production, Oops I Did It Again
06:06soared up the charts, giving us incredible tracks like Lucky and Stronger.
06:12I am stronger.
06:16The titular single earned a diamond-certified number one spot in countries across the globe,
06:21and the album became the fastest-ever-selling record by a female artist.
06:25So she wasn't lying when she said I think I did it again.
06:30A major shortcoming that lands Oops in the middle of the pack is that Brit only has one
06:35writing credit on the entire album, which sort of bolsters the manufactured pop star criticism
06:40she often received.
06:42Number 5 Glory
06:44On the other end of the spectrum, Glory is an album Britney had tons of involvement in.
06:49She co-wrote a number of songs, and even co-produced Private Show.
06:57Released in 2016, Glory saw the pop icon testing out an R&B hip-hop influence, prominent on tracks
07:03like Make Me and Slumber Party.
07:08Full of glorious ballads, the album features a wide pool of collaborators all working in stride
07:18to bring Britney's vision to life.
07:20It received favorable critical reception upon release, and fans widely considered it her
07:24best album in years.
07:33Part of what makes Glory such a pleasure to celebrate, even to this day, is just how much
07:37fun Britney had making it.
07:39I'm very proud.
07:40This is the first time I've really done an album that I'm more hands-on than I've ever
07:44been.
07:45So it's just, I'm really proud.
07:46It's like my baby.
07:47It's a cohesive body of work, with playful, sensual lyrics that welcome listeners into
07:52a world Britney is finally in control of.
08:00The infamous conservatorship battle started just a few years after this album cycle, making
08:04it her last studio album to date.
08:07We'd love for Brit to release more music, but should this be her final album?
08:11It's safe to say she went out on a high note.
08:17It feels a bit odd to say this, considering Britney had given us nothing but stellar albums up to
08:28this point.
08:29Her sixth record, which was released just a year after Blackout, is sort of meant to be
08:33more of a comeback for Britney's personal life.
08:36She's platinum blonde again, so it's as if producers are signaling that she's cleaned her act up,
08:40and is ready to deliver more smash hits.
08:42Sloppy VMA performances left at the door.
08:45Britney is back.
08:49Even the opening line of Rolling Stone's Circus review reads, quote,
08:53Britney may have left the psych ward, but on Circus, she proves she's still a freak.
08:58All of this aside, the album itself is undeniably solid.
09:02There are very few skips, with catchy singles earning massive radio play.
09:11And tracks like Kill the Lights and Mannequins standing out in their own right.
09:22The synth forward instrumentation is crisp, and the kooky vocal chops create indelible
09:33earworms that are fun to sing along to.
09:39Ultimately, Circus does feel a bit safer than some of her previous work, which was probably
09:43an intentional PR move.
09:45But the success of the album's clear, given the Circus tour was her highest grossing.
09:49Like the title alludes, Brit is now a fully-realized club crawler.
10:08She spent a lot of her early career testing the waters with a more seductive sound and friskier lyrics.
10:19After all, she was under society's looking glass as a family-friendly tween act, who risked
10:25drumming up controversy should she choose to lean into her sexual side.
10:28Think about the 12-year-olds who saw you on the VMAs, and think what they're thinking.
10:32They probably are thinking that it's okay to dress like that, which it's not.
10:36I'm not their parent, man.
10:38Caution to the wind, Britney simply goes for it on In the Zone.
10:41Toxic is perhaps the most definitive song of her adult career, especially with that iconic
10:51music video.
10:58She fully sheds the girl-next-door image to become a siren dancing in the back of the club
11:03at 3 a.m.
11:04On Early Morning, she whispers,
11:11The transformation simply feels complete.
11:14Instead of singing about her broken heart on a yard swing, she's now kissing Madonna at
11:18the VMAs.
11:22In the Zone feels like a breakthrough because it's full of vampy, cohesive bangers from start
11:27to finish.
11:28I Got That Boom Boom scored a dance-off scene in White Chicks, proving that this album was
11:33made for the clubs.
11:37They want a battle.
11:38Let's go, girls.
11:40Even every time, the only true slow song on the record was recently mixed into Charlie
11:44XCX's Boiler Room set.
11:46We can't move on without acknowledging the incredible meme potential of Britney channeling
11:59her inner NSYNC when she wails,
12:01Oh, and hot take, Showdown might be the most underrated track of Britney's entire discography.
12:12Britney's third album feels like the best of both worlds.
12:29It perfectly marries where she started and where she was going, delivering bubblegum pop
12:34and club bangers that just melt together effortlessly.
12:37Boys is a lascivious anthem that previews her in the Zone era.
12:49At the same time, I'm not a girl, not yet a woman harkens back to the essence of Baby
12:54One More Time.
12:55But the lyrics set it in a new age, contextualizing the album and defining where Britney was in both
13:00her personal life and career.
13:02I'm just trying to find the woman in me, yeah.
13:07Overprotected manages to be both a bop and pointed critique of how she's been treated.
13:11I can't help the way I feel, but my life has been so overprotected.
13:19There's also the gnarly I Love Rock and Roll cover.
13:22Anyone remember Crossroads?
13:23The princess of pop actually feels more like a rock star this time around.
13:33Truthfully, it's her most rebellious anthems that seem the most earnest.
13:43Y2K trendsetters, the Neptunes, worked closely with Britney to refine the punchy harmonic dissonance
13:48heard throughout.
13:55Furthermore, Britney herself decided that the Dream Within a Dream tour, which supported
13:59this album, was her favorite to perform.
14:12Plus, the record's biggest song, I'm a Slave For You, owns the title of most iconic live
14:17performance by the Megastar.

14:43This is it, the pop bible, the blueprint of all pop music, the mother album of all mother
14:52albums.
14:53Are you really surprised this is number one?
14:55It's Britney, bitch.
14:57For an album released during one of the most turbulent times in Britney's life, she managed
15:01to create her best record to date.
15:03Though, perhaps it is this quarter life crisis that makes it feel so incredibly personal and
15:08rich.
15:09In the opening single, Britney sings,
15:12Subtly mimicking the hungry press and general public who never get tired of taking from her.
15:21Her song is called Give Me More for a reason, because all you people want is more, more,
15:25more, more, more, more.
15:27But in the very next song, she reminds us that she can and will make it through the chaos,
15:33because she's Britney, bitch.
15:34And with a kid on my arm, I'm still an exception, but I know you want a piece of me.
15:41Blackout embraces a more rugged, urban feel, and there's not a single skip-worthy song to
15:46be found, with every track earning its place.
15:49Here you go, make it feel, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats.
15:53I like this part.
15:54On Blackout, Britney proudly declares she's not to be trifled with, belting.
16:00Live a legend, you can look but don't touch.
16:03This self-assured confidence is backed up by Britney's one and only executive producer
16:07credit.
16:08Her creative spark truly shines from beginning to end, proving that she can craft something
16:13incredible when given the lead.
16:15Hey baby, weather is now related.
16:19I got you, you can shake me out, cause I got you overrated.
16:23Not only was the album's dark electropop sound deeply influential at the time, but a whole
16:27slew of modern pop divas cite Blackout as a major inspiration for their music and style.
16:32What's your favorite album of all time?
16:35Um, it's probably Blackout by Britney.
16:38There's no doubt in our minds, this is Britney's magnum opus.
16:42Do you agree with our ranking?
16:50Sound off below and feel free to turn the comment section into a circus.
16:54Just don't get toxic.
16:55How would people be wearing a new group like that más?"
17:02Love you, Xander!
17:04Isn't that your group like a killer?
17:08Yeah, that's your story if you've ever watched that movie.
17:10I'm Mel Foggy, I'mшая Mo.
17:12Live for caffeine.
17:12Like a Toy Transенить or Add-shop app, and you can push more together.
17:15Read it into a casual concert.
