Thirty-one construction workers inside a huge industrial tunnel in Los Angeles made it to safety after a portion of it collapsed Wednesday evening, an outcome officials called a blessing after they initially feared much worse.
Transcript
00:00It was determined that a structure failure of the tunnel lining failed
00:05approximately five to six miles in, trapping, that we thought 27 individuals.
00:13Four actually went in to rescue, to assist.
00:17So a total of 31, and a total of 31 were evaluated.
00:21Anytime you tunnel underground, you encounter different conditions in different locations.
00:25And obviously, there was a location that squeezed the tunnel and forced it to partially collapse.
00:32We'll have to go back and look and see what we can do to make that repair,
00:36not only repair it, but make it stronger so it works into the future.
00:40I know when we raced down here, I was so concerned that we were going to find tragedy.
00:46Instead, what we found was victory.
00:49All of the men that were in that tunnel rescued up safe.
00:53And I just have to tell you that we're all blessed today in Los Angeles.
00:58No one injured.
00:59Everyone's safe.
01:01And I am feeling very, very good that this is a great outcome
01:06and what started as a very scary evening.
