During a press conference on Wednesday, President Donald Trump answered a question about the African Growth And Opportunity Act which allows some African countries to export to the United States without paying tariffs.
00:00The African Growth and Opportunity Act, which has been central to many sub-Saharan countries having access to the U.S. market, that's due to expire in September.
00:11Are you hoping to extend that beyond it?
00:14Well, we'll take a look at that. Yes, please.
00:17Thank you. That's up to Congress to take a first crack at.
00:21We know that program's been in place for about 20 years, and at the end result of that, we see a lot of other countries operating in Africa.
00:28We still see a lot of tariff and non-tariff barriers in Africa, so I think any discussion about that act would also have to think about how we address those kinds of barriers.
