00:00Stop! L.A.P.D.!
00:18No!
00:26Lady?
00:28No!
00:56Stay down!
00:58Stay safe.
01:00You okay?
01:02Yeah, I'm fine.
01:04Wendellier's gonna need a doctor, though.
01:061480, we need an R.A., my location.
01:10Black, male, conscious, and, uh, breathing.
01:161480, we need an R.A.P.D.
01:20Jesus Christ.
01:22I thought cold cases were gonna be safer.
01:28Yeah, well, I think that may have been some wishful thinking.
01:34If we had no food to smoke.
01:36I think that's probably what I knew.
01:38It's not a kid.
01:40Let's go outside.
01:42No!
01:43No!
01:44Oh!
01:45Come on, dear!
01:46Bye!
01:47Come on!
01:48You know!
01:49Honey, you didn't have to wait.
01:52Well, just got out of my interview five minutes ago.
01:56Plus, you're my ride.
01:57Ah.
01:58How'd it go?
02:00Prelimbs should show my actions were within policy,
02:03but I gotta sit for a psych eval before I head in.
02:06It's worth it knowing we got Wendell dead to rights.
02:10Agreed.
02:11Just, uh, watch your back.
02:14You guys have grilled me, asked a lot of questions about you,
02:18in a digging for dirt kind of way.
02:23Good to know.
02:25Breakfast of champions?
02:27Maybe not, but we took on a whole lot of bad business last night.
02:30A little good won't kill me.
02:48When I pass it, I get inside.
02:50I'm so sorry.
02:51I'm so sorry.
02:52We're being족ical.
02:53But we can use a lot of pizza.
02:55We know we have all day at night long.
02:57It's the same thing.
02:58We're waiting for lunch.
02:59We're waiting for lunch.
03:00I'm so sorry.
03:01I'm so sorry.
03:02You were waiting for lunch.
03:03I'm so sorry.
03:04It's never good.
03:05I know it's me.
03:06I know, I'm so sorry.
03:08It's time we have to go.
03:09I think I'm so sorry.
03:10I'm so sorry.
03:11I don't know.
03:12I know it's the same thing.
03:13It's time we have to try,
03:16You know, most cops will take the day off after the night you're at.
03:31They're still getting to know me.
03:33Oh, you gave us a scare.
04:02Colleen's been mainlining local news since she got in this morning.
04:07I'm a worrywart.
04:08Well, at least Wendell is off the street.
04:11Yeah.
04:12I mean, I wish it didn't take ten years, but...
04:14Yeah.
04:15Our first closed case.
04:33I was gonna make a cake, but I didn't know if anyone was gluten-free.
04:36Gluten-free's not a real thing, Colleen.
04:38Uh, I'm pretty sure it is.
04:40And, you know, the case isn't actually closed, right?
04:41It's just up to the courts now.
04:43Well, someone's cranky.
04:45Anyway, it doesn't matter.
04:52Here.
04:54Detective?
04:55The honors?
04:56I-I cleared the shelves.
05:01Figured we should have a special place.
05:06Martina, where are the boxes I brought from property yesterday?
05:21Uh, they were there.
05:22I-I...
05:23Just taking a peek.
05:24Not much to see, really.
05:27Question.
05:28Out of all the cases, the thousands of cases to choose from, why this one?
05:32You're welcome to find one to work on your own.
05:34I'm just saying it's got other things that make it simple to close.
05:37No DNA, no prints, no ID.
05:40Just a body in the mountains with a bulletin head.
05:42Cases like that tend to fall through the cracks.
05:44That's why you gotta open them up and give them a fair shake.
05:47Even if there's nothing simple about them.
05:50I'm just asking the hard questions.
05:52Seems like our, uh, resources would be better served solving crimes
05:55against actual citizens of L.A.
05:57Hmm?
06:00This is weird.
06:05What's that?
06:07The other reason I want this case.
06:14This is from a bus station in San Diego.
06:18One of the last places John Doe was seen alive.
06:22That's him.
06:24That baby was never found.
06:29And what did the investigating officer say?
06:32I was ducking my calls, and I'm anxious to get some context
06:35because the book just seems off.
06:38Like something's missing.
06:39This way.
06:41Councilman Perlman.
06:43Word in your office, detective.
06:45You've been at it two weeks, and already I'm getting heat.
06:54This is about last night.
06:55This is about the officer-involved shooting that's all over the news.
06:59Well, I certainly wasn't looking to get shot at.
07:01But aren't we missing the headline here?
07:02We got a murderer off the street.
07:04The point is we'd like you to make headlines that are less controversial.
07:08To that end, the primary focus of this unit remains the murder of Councilman's sister.
07:13Which we are working.
07:14Really?
07:15Because it looks like a study hall out there.
07:17Pick up the pace.
07:18I am trying.
07:19But big surprise, people don't really like working for free.
07:23All these applicants, they're weirdos and wannabe podcasters.
07:28With more money, I could bring in the seconds for an officer.
07:30There is no more money.
07:31Well then, I'm stretched thin.
07:33The rest are reserves and volunteers.
07:35I can only ask so much.
07:37You question Brian Richmond yet?
07:38Not yet.
07:39I want something more actionable before I do.
07:41He was the number one suspect in 01, ex-boyfriend with a broken heart.
07:45He killed her.
07:46Sounds pretty actionable to me.
07:48Look, I don't want to burn him until we know for sure.
07:52I've asked Leighton Prince for everything we have.
07:55I am re-interviewing every witness.
07:57We just need more time.
07:59More time.
08:00Man, do you know how infuriating it is to hear that?
08:08We have to go.
08:16I heard from friends in the force you weren't much of a team player.
08:19I'm hoping you see this as an opportunity to prove them wrong.
08:34Just so we're absolutely clear, this is your last stop.
08:38If you don't close Sarah's case, all of this goes away.
08:42And you're done.
09:05You're good?
09:06Keep up the good work.
09:07Stop by anytime.
09:08I'll walk you guys out.
09:09He kinda seems like a jerk.
09:11I bet he's in Aries.
09:12And Raul's is friends with him?
09:13Yeah.
09:14They go way back.
09:15High school, I think.
09:16Pearlman put him here to keep an eye on me.
09:17Oh, I knew it.
09:18Classic Aries.
09:19Let me show you something.
09:20Let me show you something.
09:21Oh, yeah.
09:22Oh, yeah.
09:23I'll walk you guys out.
09:24I'll walk you guys out.
09:26He kinda seems like a jerk.
09:28I bet he's in Aries.
09:29And Raul's is friends with him?
09:30Yeah.
09:31They go way back.
09:32High school, I think.
09:33Pearlman put him here to keep an eye on me.
09:34Oh, I knew it.
09:35Classic Aries.
09:36Let me show you something.
09:52Jake made me copies of their home videos.
09:55Oh, gosh.
09:59This one was the last one taken of Sarah
10:03two weeks before she died I can't believe the DMV actually gave you a
10:11license I'm serious you're like a public safety hazard says the guy with three
10:15speeding tickets I got you something figured you could keep it in your glove
10:20box until you get accepted you just don't want me to follow you to Fullerton
10:25come on you can't have a Fullerton diploma hanging on your wall when you're
10:29big in politics listen I do have one piece of real advice don't ever forget
10:36the break is the one on the left you suck watch out Los Angeles
10:49oh reminds me of my kids so sad Jake's the one who found her you've seen the
10:55crime scene photos that's how he remembers her not like this this is the
11:01reason why he pushes so hard he needs answers hey did you um get back from
11:09that IO on the John Doe case nothing yet I'm tired of waiting for her to get back to
11:14me call you me excuse me Samir Parker working tonight
11:30thank you Samir Parker detective Renee Ballard I've been trying to track you down all day I have
11:44some questions for you about a John Doe case you worked in 20 sorry not interested yeah I kind
11:50of got that message when you didn't return my calls care to tell me why because LAPD is in my rear view
11:56and I'm not looking back besides that case wasn't going nowhere is that why your book is so open
12:01bitch I did my job there was a baby critical missing you left out there I tried but no one saw it as a
12:11priority I do I'm reopening it you want a cookie
12:20in your chrono you listed four trips to that motel you left something out what makes you say that what
12:30was it something happened you wonder what I left out somebody at the LAPD was covering something up
12:43things didn't square up we found a John Doe in the foothills and I tracked him back to this flop
12:52house this random the Sunbeam that's the one start talking to this guy this burnout you don't know
12:59anything about the John Doe or the baby but he tells me about an altercation that happens the night
13:04before you didn't put anything about this in your murder book he said people were yelling in the
13:08parking lot he goes out there and he sees the motel manager getting into it with some woman
13:12back and white shows up hauls the lady off not unusual in a place like that hey see I started
13:18it's crowded out here we gotta open up I need five minutes when I started asking the manager
13:25about the altercation he gets real uncooperative so I head back to the barn and I start looking up
13:30all the 911 calls any record of a rollout nothing nothing in the sergeant's law that's what I'm saying
13:38someone buried that 911 call in the rollout now who would want to do that that's why it's not in the
13:44book if you suspected the cops were involved why not try to prove it uh-huh cuz calling the LAPD out
13:50on your shit always goes so well besides I wasn't there much longer after that I quit like a week or two
13:57later one thing I regret is leaving them cases behind you want another shot at it John Doe case
14:05assuming you can keep your suspicions about the department on the down low there's a reason I'm not
14:11a cop anymore detective I'm not asking you to put the uniform back on all right just look at the
14:16evidence we could really use your tank I don't know
14:22you know that baby would probably be six years old
14:33think about it
14:40you thinking about bringing her on
14:44crossed my mind I'd have to reel her in slow
14:48oh we're getting fridge tomorrow
14:51so does Parker give you any idea why she flamed out of RHD after six months
14:56she did not probably drugs right booze let's just wait and see she might not even show up
15:04detective that jewelry store homicide I think I have a new approach 80 degrees in here oh
15:12swear to god this thing is useless I'm setting up eBay alerts for the items that were stolen over
15:17300 pieces so it'll take a while but if anything matches up I'll get notified didn't that go down in
15:22like 09 07 why and you think the killer is just now trying to unload those goods well no but it
15:29could give us something to trace back I have a really good feeling about this whoa it's like a
15:34library in here Parker glad you could make it in I call it the library of lost souls Samira Parker
15:42meet Colleen Hatteras she's one of my volunteers I met her last year when she came to RHD with a
15:47theory on a case nobody want to listen to her because she doesn't have a law enforcement background
15:51former soccer mom current empty nester but her theory got us our guy and this is Thomas Lafont my
15:59first partner after I made detective he retired a few years ago but I pulled him back in as a reserve
16:03I remember your name I was only in RHD for a few months but the guys would not stop talking about
16:08your interviews just a few months huh Ted Rawls pleasure Ted's a local business owner private
16:16security but I've been reserved for 12 years councilman Pearlman thought Ballard could use a
16:21little help down here okay you want in the field today wasn't planning to why not a hardware for a
16:28guy riding a desk it's like you're about to go to battle Parker was the IO on the John Doe case we
16:36just pulled thought I could use her input I'm just looking at evidence I'm not here to knock on any
16:42doors copy that well everything we have is here and on the board you know I've called this a Santa
16:48Muerte case after that figurine we found in his bedroom at the Sunbeam I wondered what that was
16:53Santa Muerte is a folks ain't out of Mexico a lot of immigrants carry them they think they offer
16:58protection didn't much help here is that how you figured our Dundo was undocumented yeah I mean it
17:05wasn't a ton of detail the department was focused on other cases makes sense the killer's probably
17:10already back across the border Martina Castro meets the mayor Parker Martina is our intern with an eye
17:20towards law school she's trying to get this place organized is that from Leighton Prince all they've
17:25got on the Sarah Pearlman crime scene thank you now this one I've heard of yeah councilman
17:30Pearlman sisters why this unit's up and running in the first place
17:40this is footage from the scene it's like a time capsule they're all like that we get to go back
17:53and forth but family somehow they're always stuck back there
17:5716 strangled the night before Sadie Hawkins dance
18:07oh what is that her retainer yeah she lost it during a struggle
18:14you got the palm print what palm print it's from the window that the killer climbed out of
18:21trying to track it down for a week miracle it still exists yeah it's like it was a waste of
18:26time it's too smeared to be usable not thinking about the print think about the tape used to lift it
18:32there's a chance that it grabs some DNA the killer left behind that's smart that's what I said
18:41touch DNA has come a long way since the early aughts 2001 you said yeah
18:48the dusting powder tends to absorb oil and 24 years later samples gonna be pretty degraded but
18:56you'll take a look at it sure just don't get your hopes up what kind of timeline you thinking 30 days
19:03minimum get used to 60 60 this is for the Pearlman case you know the councilman you run the cold case
19:11unit yeah I'll move it to the front of the line look I'm sure the councilman will really appreciate it
19:20I'm not doing it for the councilman you're detective Ballard right I heard about what you did last year
19:27thought it was brave
19:57you
20:06you
20:16Hey, baby girl, how are you doing?
20:29Come on.
20:30Oh, come on.
20:31Jesus, you two, they're busting an eardrum in here.
20:45Jimenez had his workers there again.
20:47Nothing but hammers and hand saws all day.
20:50Driving me nuts.
20:52Uh, grab me a Phillips head.
20:54Where is it?
20:55I don't know. Look around.
20:57Check the drawers.
20:58It's got a blue handle.
21:03You know, we could just buy a new vacuum.
21:05Ugh.
21:06Why are you laying the beating on my kitchen?
21:09Ugh.
21:10It.
21:12What's wrong with you?
21:13Nothing.
21:14Oh, right. Perfect place for that.
21:21You need to call that lifeguard friend of yours.
21:24What's his name? Aaron?
21:25You're always more relaxed after a night at his place.
21:28It's you, too.
21:29What?
21:30A roll in the hay always did it for me.
21:33Ugh.
21:34Still does.
21:35You know what? Let's not, okay?
21:37Thanks.
21:38Maybe you ought to let him take you to dinner for once.
21:41Get to know him a little.
21:43Lord knows the only people you ever get close to are those poor dead souls in the cases you work.
21:48Oh, well, that explains why I'm so close to you.
21:50You're halfway in the grave already, Grandma.
21:52Huh.
21:53Huh.
21:54You know that nothing that was bothering you earlier?
22:08It have anything to do with that business last year?
22:10The woman at the lab brought it up.
22:12Do I need to have words with this lab lady?
22:17No.
22:18She meant well.
22:21It's just that anytime someone mentions it, I feel like I'm right back there.
22:27Like I can't get free from it.
22:57But that place says I wanna be
23:10I know it starts with me
23:12I gotta see it.
23:27Can I help you?
23:28Spencer, right?
23:30Remember me?
23:31I worked a murder back in 2020.
23:33Mexican guy, had a baby.
23:35Traced his last known whereabouts back to this charming place.
23:41Tamir Parker.
23:43Robbery homicide?
23:45Ringing any bells?
23:48Yeah, I could see how we all might blend together.
23:51A record like yours, you've probably seen a lot of cops.
23:55Grand theft, assault.
23:56What do you want?
23:58I'm curious to see if anybody came around looking for him.
24:01You're asking about someone who died, what, five years ago?
24:06No wonder you people got such a stellar rep.
24:10I got nothing.
24:12Now, could you vacate?
24:14Cops ain't good for business.
24:18RHD, how can I help you?
24:28Olivas, I think this one's for you.
24:30Line one.
24:31Ah.
24:34Detective Olivas, robbery homicide.
24:36How can I help you?
24:37Um, is Detective Parker there?
24:39Is it Miraparkar?
24:40Yes.
24:41I'm sorry, she doesn't work here anymore, but I'm happy to help you with whatever...
24:46Hello?
24:50Hello?
24:51That you get the same stuff you did when you were actually on the job?
24:55Yeah, pretty much.
24:56You can take a carry gun, badge, check out equipment, drive a city ride.
25:01Sorry, those perks don't apply to the interns.
25:04Oh, I'm mostly here for the college credit.
25:07Uh-huh.
25:08What kind of law are you interested in?
25:10Maybe corporate law or finance?
25:13And you chose this internship?
25:15Well, I figured at one of those big firms, I probably would have just spent the whole
25:19semester restocking coffee pods.
25:21Hmm.
25:22Morning.
25:23Any news from the lab?
25:25She told you it would be a long shot.
25:27Hmm.
25:28We got a fridge?
25:29Yeah.
25:30Starting to feel like a real unit around here.
25:34Colleen?
25:35That's evidence.
25:36Doesn't belong on your desk?
25:38I'm sorry, it's just...
25:39I-I get some weird energy off of it.
25:42Weird energy?
25:44What does that mean?
25:45You know, uh, like-like a sense of things.
25:48Thought it'd be good to keep it close by while I work the case.
25:56Can I see you in my office, please?
26:02Close the door.
26:06Please don't tell me you think you're psychic.
26:08I-I have intuitions.
26:11I-I know things about people, like-like an empath.
26:14Oh, man.
26:15Is that-is that a problem?
26:16I thought it could be useful if I ever-
26:17Imagine this jewelry store case goes to trial.
26:19If a defense attorney got wind of this, they would eviscerate you on the stand.
26:25You do good work, Colleen.
26:27I just don't want it undermined by anything.
26:29I-I understand.
26:31I-I'll just-I'll keep this to myself.
26:35And I'll put the-yeah.
26:37Yep.
26:42Parker.
26:43Good morning.
26:44Yeah, hey.
26:45I'm about to head to that motel.
26:46The Sunbeam?
26:47Anything I should know?
26:49Um, actually, I just stopped by there.
26:52Oh, really?
26:53And here I thought we weren't knocking on doors.
26:57Yeah.
26:58Uh, listen.
27:01Going back to that place, it just reminded me, um...
27:05This thing dried up, like, five years ago.
27:09What do you think we're gonna get from it now?
27:12Well, I don't know.
27:14Past is always present.
27:16But if no one cares enough to dig, then it just stays buried.
27:21I don't think this is me anymore.
27:23You know, maybe it never was.
27:25What if you're wrong?
27:28You did go to that motel.
27:30So, you do care.
27:34Look, just give me a day of your time.
27:36Maybe two.
27:42One day.
27:44Detective Ballard.
27:55Hey.
27:56Darcy.
27:59Lawn shot paid off.
28:00The lab got DNA off that print tape.
28:02You're kidding.
28:03The killer's DNA's been there this whole time.
28:05I know.
28:06Now we need to find a profile to compare it to.
28:08You still gonna lie on the ex-boyfriend?
28:10Brian Richman?
28:11Pearlman sure thinks he's our guy.
28:13Good luck getting a warrant for his DNA.
28:15Even back then they didn't have enough probable cause.
28:18Oh, I'll get it some other way.
28:32Nelson.
28:33I was just about to call.
28:35I heard you're running some DNA tests.
28:38Something about a palm print?
28:40Yeah, we found a palm print in that case.
28:42Well?
28:43Does it match Richmond?
28:44Well, it's possible to say right now.
28:47Look, I don't want to hear about this through the grapevine.
28:50I want to hear from you.
28:53Yeah, understood.
28:54We should have something meaningful any minute now.
28:56You'll be the first to know.
28:57Fantastic.
28:59Sorry baby.
29:00It's not your fault.
29:05Don will be with you in a minute.
29:20Take a look around.
29:21Thanks.
29:22Is this your stuff?
29:23Brian?
29:24Is that your name?
29:25Yeah.
29:26Do you mind giving me a quote on a piece?
29:27Kind of on a roll here.
29:28Uh, but Don can help you out.
29:29He knows my price.
29:30Give me a minute.
29:31I'll, uh...
29:32I'll, uh...
29:33I'll, uh...
29:34Oh, shit.
29:35Oh, shit.
29:37Oh, shit.
29:38Oh, shit.
29:42What do you mind giving me a quote on a piece?
29:43Kind of on a roll here.
29:45Uh, but Don can help you out.
29:46He knows my price.
29:47Give me a minute.
29:48Oh, uh...
29:49Gasoline and fire, no one's gonna be fair.
29:55No resistance, no room for your hands.
30:01No resistance, no room for your hands.
30:03Oh, shit.
30:08How's the V?
30:10Yo, Brian, just for you.
30:16Sorry.
30:19It's Brian.
30:24Uh, yeah, let me check.
30:28I got time Thursday.
30:31Friday.
30:33Sorry, I heard you wrong.
30:35Yeah, Friday.
30:38Hey, I'm double parked.
30:41I'm gonna check on my car.
30:42I can spot you cops a mile away.
30:54Police already ruined my life with this.
30:57Leave me alone.
31:08Hey.
31:09Looking for cold cases.
31:10Did I ask someone to call you a pass?
31:12Afraid not.
31:13Figured I could just stop by.
31:14I've been out here since I was a recruit.
31:16Sure don't miss that rope climb.
31:18Hmm.
31:19You're a Levis.
31:20R.H.D.
31:21You address my academy class about proper evidence collection.
31:25Job can't always be sexy.
31:29Stairs on the left.
31:30Appreciate you.
31:31Oh.
31:32Hey there.
31:33Uh, Zamira Parker around.
31:34Oh, she just stepped out.
31:35She should be right back.
31:36Thomas Lafon.
31:37Robert, you are Mr. R.H.D.
31:40I-and your name was?
31:41Colleen Hatteras.
31:42I-I'm a volunteer.
31:43Got a lot of admiration for people like you.
31:44Oh.
31:45Fine.
31:46There she is.
31:47Parker and I were partners for a bit.
31:48You wouldn't believe who they got me rolling with now.
31:49Pietras.
31:50Uh.
31:51Dude with the floss.
31:52Oliva.
31:53Oh.
31:54Oh.
31:55Oh.
31:56Oh.
31:57Oh.
31:58Oh.
31:59Oh.
32:00Oh.
32:01Oh.
32:02Oh.
32:03Oh.
32:04Oh.
32:05Oh.
32:06Oh.
32:07Oh.
32:08Oh.
32:09Boss.
32:10Oliva's.
32:12What are you doing here?
32:14Uh, a woman called down to R.H.D. earlier.
32:16I asked for Parker.
32:17When I told her if she no longer worked there,
32:19a lady hung up on me.
32:21Call came from a motel tied to a case that we worked on
32:23back in the day.
32:24The Sunbeam.
32:25Remember that dump?
32:27Anyway, I asked her out.
32:29Heard that Parker was dipping her toe down here with you.
32:31Case is cold, isn't it?
32:33Sadly, yeah.
32:34But if it's something that you might take a look at,
32:36I am more than willing to help out.
32:38You probably have enough on your plate.
32:40Fair point.
32:42Anyway, glad I came down.
32:44Wanted to see your whole operation.
32:46Well, now you've seen it.
32:48Thanks for stopping by.
32:55It's good to see you folks.
32:56LaFont.
33:02Feel free to just call next time.
33:04Ballard, come on.
33:07Any time we bury the hatchet?
33:08Oh, I plan on burying it.
33:10In your goddamn back.
33:18Always a pleasure.
33:19Pleasure.
33:49You're looking pretty good out there.
33:50Passed up some nice sex though.
33:51Yeah.
33:52I got some things on my mind.
33:55Sometimes it's just nice to sit out there, you know?
33:56I got coffee if you want to talk.
33:57Yeah.
33:58I got some things on my mind.
34:02Sometimes it's just nice to sit out there, you know?
34:03I got coffee if you want to talk.
34:04I got to go meet someone.
34:05Brain check?
34:06Anytime.
34:08I'll call you.
34:09I'll answer.
34:10Come on, baby.
34:11Come on.
34:12Come on.
34:13Come on.
34:14Come on.
34:15Come on.
34:16Come on.
34:17You're looking pretty good out there.
34:18Passed up some nice sex though.
34:19Yeah.
34:20I got some things on my mind.
34:22Sometimes it's just nice to sit out there, you know?
34:24I got coffee if you want to talk.
34:25I got to go meet someone.
34:27Brain check?
34:28Anytime.
34:29I got coffee.
34:30I got coffee.
34:31I got coffee.
34:32I got coffee.
34:33I got coffee.
34:34I got coffee.
34:35I'll call you.
34:36I'll answer.
34:37Come on, baby girl.
34:38Let's go.
34:53Thanks for meeting me.
34:58for meeting me.
35:01You know, I remember when you joined up.
35:03It was encouraging to see another woman climb the ranks
35:06like you did.
35:09Why are you charming me?
35:12I'm hoping that whatever made you leave,
35:16could put it behind you, because I think you'd
35:18be a great addition to my team.
35:23You know, me and my brothers, we was always
35:25told to watch out for the cops.
35:29It was always us against them.
35:33So when I went into the academy,
35:35everybody thought I was out of my mind.
35:39Lost a lot of friends.
35:41Mama started looking at me funny.
35:42It was.
35:45But I thought I could make it better for all of them.
35:49Did work out that way.
35:52No, it did not.
35:54Then I meet you, and I think maybe, I don't know,
35:55like I could finally do some good.
35:59But getting involved with this case again, working
36:03with the LAPD again, it just reminded me
36:08why I left it all behind.
36:11Why did you leave?
36:12a lot of hypocrisy, a lot of assholes, a lot of victims, too.
36:25Yeah, all the assholes are definitely a thing.
36:28How do you think I ended up heading the cold case unit?
36:30I tried to call one of those assholes out,
36:34the apartment sided with him, and then I got booted.
36:38What better way to keep the troublesome woman quiet than to
36:42silo her in the ass end of the LAPD?
36:44The bottom line is that I think they wanted me to quit.
36:52But that's not happening.
36:58This asshole you keep talking about, was it Olivas?
37:02You know, I'll tell you something, it's actually why I pulled the Dondo case.
37:15No better way to stick it to the guy than to solve the case he couldn't, right?
37:18Why don't you do it with me?
37:23Officially, join the unit.
37:26I know you want to go by that motel after what Olivas said.
37:30Look, I have a stack of resumes on my desk.
37:38A bunch of people who think it'd be neat to solve a crime.
37:41But they're tourists.
37:43I want you.
37:47What do you say?
37:59Okay.
38:02Hell with it, I'm in.
38:17I'm in.
38:29I'm in.
38:33I'm in.
38:34I'm in.
38:35I'm in.
38:36I'm in.
38:37We're going to get a break.
38:53What happened?
38:54Yulia is dead. Someone killed her.
38:57Yulia?
39:01She worked here?
39:03She was a cleaning lady, like me.
39:05Mom?
39:14Oh, my God.
39:21Detective Ballard.
39:22Renee? It's Darcy.
39:24Even though you weren't able to get any DNA off by enrichment,
39:27I went ahead and ran that touch gene from the palm print through CODIS,
39:30and I got a case-to-case head.
39:31No shit.
39:33Sarah Pearlman's killer left DNA behind in another crime scene.
39:37Yep. It's another murder, too.
39:41A woman named...
39:42Laura Wilson. Back in 08.
39:44We might have a goddamn serial killer on our hands.
39:48I'll do this.
39:49Just not hide from my basement.
39:50I'll do this.
39:51Wow.
39:52You've got to be in here now.
39:55I got the living room.
39:57What?
39:58What should I do?
40:00I got the living room.
40:01I got my blood on my first door,
40:02then I got the living room.
40:03I'm going to fall out of my second door.
40:04In the limestone room.
40:06I got to go outside of my second door.
40:07There is a waiting room.
40:08I got to go outside.
40:09I got to go outside on my face and I have to go outside.
40:10Wow.
40:17You don't see many books this clean.
40:21Who was the investigator?
40:28You gotta be kidding me.
40:36Harry fucking Bosch.
40:40There we go.
40:52They do wonder if running cold cases is secondary trauma.
40:58It's a position you were forced into because your brothers in blue turned their backs on you.
41:02Why are we catching a fresh one?
41:04You missed the part where she said Yulia might be tied to the John Doe.
41:07Where'd you get the gun?
41:08Street guys call them Montana.
41:09There's definitely a cop.
41:10It's gonna be near impossible investigating potential corruption.
41:16Everyone is mad at the LAPD.
41:19Get out!
41:20And I'm the punching bag.
41:21I would kill for the experience you're getting in cold cases.
41:23The killer is out there right now and he could still be active.
41:26He's methodical.
41:27He's not choosing these women randomly.
41:28There's just something we're not seeing.
41:30You assured me that my sister's case...
41:32Your sister is not more or less important than any of my victims.
41:36Homicide has more resources for something this size.
41:38We have 14 victims now.
41:40That's 14 families waiting for answers.
41:42You have 72 hours.
41:44Why the hell is it always two steps back?
41:48This is sick.
41:49That it stops here.
41:51I struggle to stay.
41:52Then why did you when you knew what your so-called brothers were capable of?
41:56Because someone has to watch the Watchmen.
42:00They go to a court.
42:03And they've lost their ship.
42:05They want to see you at the end of the day of their lives.
42:08I'm not sure.
42:09I'm scared of them.
42:10I'm scared of them.
42:11You're a good one.
42:12I don't think they've lost a lot of money.
42:14So I believe that not.
42:15I don't think they've lost the first time.
42:16I'm scared of them.
42:17You're not scared of them.
42:18You're a bad boy.
42:20No?
42:21I don't think they're lost.
42:22I don't think they were going to ask them.
42:23I'm scared of them.
42:25You know what I thought they were going to do.
42:26What happened is the first time they were going to do.
