Lambourn was the runaway winner of this year's Epsom Derby and he back that win up by claiming the Irish Derby too. His sire Australia was a dual-Derby hero too. Australia also sired Cercene who won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot this year. Mark Byrne spoke to TDN about Australia.

00:00One of the most heartwarming stories to come out of Royal Ascot 2025 was that of
00:06Sir Seney winning the coronation stakes for Joe Murphy. The three-year-old filly
00:10is by Australia who has an affinity for siring Royal Ascot winners and is
00:15emerging as a broodmare sire to take note of. Mark Byrne of Coolmore Stud in
00:20Ireland sat down with TDN to discuss his merits. He was a fantastic racehorse and
00:26an unbeaten two-year-old who went on to be a champion three-year-old winning the
00:30Derby, the Irish Derby and then the Juddmont Internationals.
00:50His race record took no explaining and he's by Galileo out of an Oaks winner.
00:55His pedigree didn't take much to explain and he's a beautiful horse so he was a
00:58real buzzy, buzzy horse when he came here. Everyone wants to use him. He was very popular
01:03and rightly so and I suppose we're seeing the fruits of his tradition now.
01:08He's got a Breeders' Cup winner. This year was his second classic winner. He's had an
01:12awful lot of Royal Ascot winners and led by obviously Sir Seney this year for Joe Murphy
01:16and that's a lovely story. It's a local trained horse and he was bred by one of the co-owners
01:20of Australian China Horse Club, sold by Baroda and the Cox family. So like it's ticked a lot of
01:25boxes and it brings a lot of people with them. Even the day Lambourne won the Derby you could see
01:32that like it's kind of more unusual but you get a lot of text messages from breeders that were
01:36delighted to have used him. The Cullen family also bred a group one winner by him internationally as
01:40well. So it's just one of those petty Irish stallions that it doesn't matter where you are,
01:45he can get you a good horse. He famously got into the Guineas race, the brilliant siren-making race
01:52that was between Knight of Thunder and Kingman and you can see what Knight of Thunder and Kingman
01:56stand for in Australia standing for €10,000 and yet like okay I think in leading Sire as the
02:02three-roll stakes winners in Europe this year I think Kingman has one more stakes winner than
02:05him and Knight of Thunder is on the same number for three-rolls. With the sales ring you kind of have
02:09to catch on and be the buzz horse and just keep beating expectations and the market probably
02:14is cruel at times but you can see that it comes back around and he's going to cover as nice a book
02:20and as good a book and big a book as he had in a lot of years and you can also see then that it's
02:27reflected in other things like fillies and broodmare prospects now are going to start skyrocketing by
02:32Australia and with Lazat who was obviously very impressive of an Australian mare but it's many
02:38other horses coming behind it beyond reason the Australian mare belong to Godolphin looks like
02:41a good broodmare and Jensen Gemini looks like a horse who will win a group one as well out of an
02:45Australian mare and and this is probably the first crop of of of runners out of Australia mare so
02:51it's definitely something that um is is resonating with breeders already and and it's probably going
02:56to help keep his demand up I would confidently say has been kick-started again just looking at the
03:02numbers he's going to cover this year and the demand of the sales for them is getting better and and
03:07um I think that's why we price them at 10 times in euro to give breeders owner breeders or not just
03:11be owner breeders but also commercial breeders a chance to make a profit
