00:00Welcome to Jerusalem in the first century as understood by the app called
00:04Immersive Herod's Temple. You can get this app for free and explore yourself.
00:08Thank you for meeting me at the Huldah gates. We enter on the right and will
00:13exit on the left. I see you have done everything you need to go to the temple.
00:17You have your sheep ready for the Thanksgiving sacrifice. You have gone to
00:21the waters of the mikveh and become pure. And thank you for not wearing any
00:25shoes. This mount which we are about to see was the construction of Herod the
00:31Great. Herod the Great was a very powerful, ruthless leader at the end of the
00:36first century BC and he renovated and rebuilt the second temple in Jerusalem.
00:41The first temple of King Solomon was destroyed many centuries earlier. And he
00:47built this with about 11,000 people and it took about 9-10 years. And what we're
00:52looking right here in the back the first thing you see is Herod built for himself
00:55a royal portico, a royal court where he and all those officials who are with him
01:01would be able to spend their time at the center of Jerusalem and that means at the
01:05temple. So here we have the royal court and this is where if you had any
01:09connection with the great mighty and cruel Herod you would be able to come here
01:15and spend your time. And this would protect you not only from rain but perhaps
01:19more importantly from the blazing sun in Jerusalem especially in those summer
01:24months. So this is the royal court. Josephus calls it one of the most
01:28magnificent buildings ever but here it is. We are now leaving the royal court and we
01:33are at the court of the Gentiles. This would be the last place where a non-Jew
01:37would be able to be in the temple itself and at this time this means the
01:41Romans. And there would have been people selling many many different things here.
01:44You could imagine for example there being money changers so that people could
01:48change their money to give the exact half shekel to the temple. And so at this
01:54point there would be many stores especially in the porches surrounding this
01:58area. Here we come to the Soreik which says Gentiles you are not allowed to move
02:03past here but don't worry you can come on my tour if this is where all you
02:08would have been able to go to. Here we're going to a region coming up on the
02:11Cheil. The Cheil was basically the last boundary before you're in the temple itself. And the Cheil would have been right in the temple itself.
02:18Right about the temple. Right around it. And like I said we enter on the right.
02:24We exit on the left. So we are moving to our right. And here we see the eastern gate of the temple.
02:30This is where you would probably check in with the Levim, the Levites. Give them your sheep.
02:35And they would also check you to make sure that you went to the mikveh and that you are pure.
02:39And so this is the eastern gate. We are now entering the temple complex itself.
02:44And this is the women's court. There are two ways to understand the women's court.
02:48It either means that the women would go into the court itself but no further.
02:53Or it means that the women would come onto the top porch such as this and overlook the women's court.
02:59But no matter the case, here we see a beautiful view of the gate of Nicanor.
03:03You can also see some really tall towers. These are lampstands. The app developer based the height of these,
03:10which is half the height of the temple itself, on a late passage in the Talmud.
03:14And if I were to make an app such as this, I would make these much smaller.
03:18But this is one way to understand the lampstands in the women's court.
03:21Let's head back downstairs and enter the women's court itself.
03:30And when we look around, we can just see this breathtaking space.
03:33This is probably where families would have enjoyed their sacrificial meals.
03:38This space would have been filled with music by the Levinium, both in terms of song and in terms of instruments.
03:45It's just a magnificent place to enjoy the sacrifice that people have offered.
03:51What we're looking at over here are called the shofar rote, the shofars.
03:54And what they are are horns, kind of like a shofar horn, that you would put your money in.
04:00And you would donate to different causes.
04:02So for example, if you wanted to donate to the wood in the temple so that there would be wood,
04:06you would put it in the wood shofar.
04:09At this point, I'd like to show you the first of four chambers alongside the women's court.
04:14This is the chamber of the Nazirite.
04:16A Nazir was a person who took a vow upon themselves not to drink any wine,
04:21not to touch or be near any dead people, and perhaps most importantly, not to cut their hair.
04:27And so in this area, when the Nazir needed to give his sacrifice,
04:32he would cut his hair, throw it on the fire, and then there is a giant pot.
04:36And that's where his sacrifice would be cooked.
04:38It was a special sacrifice to be cooked.
04:40And here is where the Nazir would be able to do all this as well as eat their special sacrifice.
04:46And this was the first of four different chambers.
04:51And now let's move on to the second.
04:52Here we are walking again through the main women's court.
04:55We see a lot of those shofars where the money would be donated to them.
04:59And here we get a good glimpse of the Grand Gate of Nicanor.
05:03And we're passing it to go into our second chamber of the women's court.
05:08And this here is the chamber of the oils.
05:11The oil would have been used for the sacrifices as well as for some of the baking.
05:16And it would have also been used for the menorah.
05:19And what we see here are giant containers, which would have a great deal of oil.
05:23And this oil would have been purchased by the temple or donated to it.
05:26We are leaving here and we're going to go into something not generally considered a chamber.
05:31But it still is kind of a chamber.
05:33This is where the Levitical instruments were housed.
05:35Those tall, pointy instruments were the silver trumpets, the Chatzotz wrote.
05:40And there are a number of stringed instruments as well.
05:43And if you check out the Book of Psalms, you can actually see many of these instruments
05:47named in the introductions to each psalm.
05:50Here we are again, back in the women's court, leaving the Levitical chamber.
05:56And we see the 15 steps of the gate of Nicanor.
05:59And this is where the Levites would have stood as they sang the 15 songs of Ascent.
06:04We are now crossing over the women's court,
06:07which on a festival day would have had thousands and thousands and thousands of people.
06:13And here we're coming into our third chamber, the chamber of wood.
06:17The fuel on the altar was wood and it was in great demand.
06:21And unfortunately, in Israel, there weren't many trees.
06:25It's not a really wooded, foresty area.
06:28And so anybody who would donate wood, that would be a great thing to donate.
06:32And it needed to be stored up and used on the altar.
06:35Back to the women's court, passing more of those shofars.
06:38Interestingly, the temple was free.
06:41It did not cost any money to enter.
06:43It did not cost any money to offer a sacrifice.
06:46There were only donations.
06:47And here we come to our fourth and final chamber.
06:51This is the chamber of the leopards, Sara'at.
06:54And anybody who had leprosyed Sara'at, they would come to the temple.
06:58There would be many steps in their attainment of purity.
07:02But one of them was here.
07:03You can't really see it well.
07:04But this is supposed to be a mikvah, a place for people to immerse themselves in water.
07:10Although you might not expect it, there are actually many, many cisterns on the temple mount.
07:15That means that these are areas that collect rainwater.
07:18And one of them was built so large, it was called the Great Sea.
07:22And the Great Sea could hold two million gallons of water.
07:26So at this point in time, we are going to leave the women's court.
07:30And come and let's take a look at what is next.
07:33We are going through the gate of Nicanor.
07:35And here we are at the second major court, the court of the Israelites.
07:39Where everyone from Israel who was not a priest or a Levite.
07:43This is where they would stand to watch the animal that they brought to the temple.
07:47This is where they would watch it get slaughtered and offered by the priests.
07:52And we can see over here that there's a gate that the people are not able to go any further.
07:57And also the developers of the app put in this little box here.
08:00I'm not quite sure what it is exactly.
08:02But perhaps that was a place where the Levites would stand and sing while the offerings were being offered.
08:08Alright, now let's head into the actual court of the priests.
08:12The third and final court.
08:14And this of course, by the name priest, means you had to be a priest to enter here.
08:19The court of the priests on the outside was mainly for animal slaughter.
08:22The temple was essentially a giant butcher shop.
08:26And what we see over here are all the animals that were brought for the slaughter.
08:30And each animal would be waiting there while it's alive.
08:33Here we see a bunch of knives.
08:36And you can see these like saws for like chopping off pieces of an animal.
08:42And over here we see where the animals would be slaughtered.
08:44So here we have a table for the slaughtering of animals.
08:48And then over here what we have in the temple is these hooks.
08:52And at this point the animals would be skinned.
08:55And all their innards that are kind of not being put on the altar and not eaten,
09:00they would have been gone away with.
09:03I assume they would have been brought outside of the city.
09:05But there we have the animals.
09:07And once the animal is slaughtered, the priest is going to bring it,
09:11but not put his back to the temple.
09:13See, we're going to walk backwards.
09:14We don't want to actually put our back to the temple.
09:18And so over here we're going to go up the magnificent altar.
09:22Even in the Torah it says that the altar shouldn't have steps.
09:25So there's a gigantic ramp and here we have a magnificently large altar
09:31where you can have many areas of fire to put the sacrifices on.
09:36And here we have some altar tools like there's the makhteh, the fire pan.
09:40Here we have where some of the liquids would be.
09:42And this is all in front of God's home.
09:45This is all in front of the temple itself.
09:48Over here we can see the horns of the altar.
09:51There would have been horns.
09:52There would even be these two things that are not depicted here,
09:55but two nostrils where you could pour the extra blood and the extra oil
10:00down so that it would drain out.
10:02So let's leave the altar.
10:03And now we are going to start heading over to the main area of God's house,
10:09the temple itself.
10:11And this is just a beautiful rendition here.
10:13You can see the shiny gold edifice, the giant columns, just a magnificent place.
10:18Here we are coming upon the kior, the laver.
10:22And this is where we would be washing our hands and our feet
10:26to make sure that we are pure before we enter the temple itself.
10:29We are about to enter the temple.
10:32Needless to say, this is only for priests to enter.
10:35And here we're going to enter by first ascending the stairs to the ulam, the entrance hall.
10:41You can think of the ulam as like a porch or an entrance hall in a house.
10:45It's the first step, but it's not really inside.
10:48It's both inside and out.
10:49And here we actually see a priest in the priestly garb.
10:52And this is typical fashion for a priest, a kohen.
10:55And we will see more garments soon when we see the high priest.
10:59So we are in the porch.
11:01For some reason, this app does not include,
11:03there would have been two tables here for the showbreads.
11:06One that's supposed to go in next week and one that came from last week.
11:10But over here we also see the magnificent columns with the golden vine around them.
11:15And that golden vine would have been people would donate money
11:19and then they would put the gold on that vine.
11:21We're now entering the main sanctuary through the double doors.
11:25And as you can see here, and this is something really fascinating
11:29that this app taught me much more than anything else,
11:32is that there are these little side corridors.
11:34And we'll get to those soon.
11:35But here we are in the sanctuary.
11:37And this is known as the Heichal.
11:39And right now we're looking at a priest who is lighting the lamp,
11:42the menorah, the gold menorah.
11:44And if you think about it, why is there a lamp?
11:46Well, this is God's house and there are no windows.
11:50So with no windows, you need some light.
11:51And that's what the menorah is providing.
11:53The menorah is providing light.
11:55I told this to my daughter and she said,
11:56well, why don't you have windows?
11:58And I thought that was a very good question.
12:00So I don't know.
12:00But since there are no windows, that's when you get the menorah.
12:03Here we see the showbread.
12:05You would have the showbread presented to God.
12:07And like I said, there would have been showbread outside.
12:10Two tables for that too.
12:13And over here, what we're going to see is the incense altar.
12:17And the incense was very important because if you are a slaughterhouse in a hot place like Jerusalem,
12:24there is a lot of bad smells that can accumulate.
12:27And so over here, especially with that frankincense as part of the incense,
12:31you were able to dispel that smell.
12:33Turning back, we can see the entire sanctuary, the entire Heichal.
12:38And while this is only limited to priests, it is still not the most private area of God's house.
12:43For that, we need to turn back around and go to the Holy of Holies.
12:48On our way here, we see a lot of these plus signs.
12:51This is what the app developers have little notes for you to check out if you want to see them.
12:55We are now entering the Holy of Holies,
12:58the most important place in the temple where God's presence resides.
13:02And you notice here that there is a priest.
13:05This is the high priest.
13:06You can tell by the 12 stones on his breastplate, the Choshen.
13:11And in this area, you notice there's not much else.
13:14In times gone by, there would have been the ark and the cherubim, the cherubim,
13:19but these are gone.
13:20So in this space, the only thing that exists is a mark on the floor where the ark should have been.
13:27Interestingly, many people think that they can see that space on the rock,
13:31which is currently in the dome of the rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
13:36So here we are in the Holy of Holies,
13:38a breathtaking space where only one human being is allowed to enter at one time in the year.
13:45And that is on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
13:47And that is the Kohen Gadol, the high priest.
13:52All right, let's take a look at some of those really interesting caverns in the temple
13:56that I did not know about until this app.
13:59Let's take a look here.
14:00We're in one section that was probably closed off and not used,
14:04but that actually makes it very interesting.
14:07If you look over here, you see that there's a little nook for storage purposes.
14:11And if we keep going deeper and deeper into these secret compartments,
14:15what we see over here, the app developer did something fascinating.
14:19They set up a little table with a lamp and an inkwell for writing.
14:24Perhaps this is where some of the biblical texts were written.
14:27And if you notice there, there's that giant oil jar.
14:29That oil jar is the same kind of jar that the Dead Sea Scrolls were kept in.
14:34So perhaps there were some amazing texts in that jar.
14:37Perhaps those were the texts that we have in our Tanakh, in our Hebrew Bible.
14:41Or perhaps they were other texts that we do not know of today.
14:45Okay, so these are some of the compartments.
14:47Let me show you some even more exciting compartments.
14:50We are now ascending three flights of stairs on the north side of the temple.
14:55At this moment, we are walking alongside the Holy of Holies itself.
15:00And as we ascend the third flight of stairs,
15:03we are going to find ourselves at the roof of the temple.
15:10And what we're looking over here, that is the Antonia Fortress, named for Mark Antony.
15:15And that is basically what Herod built so that the Romans could have a place
15:19to secure the temple and be in charge of the temple.
15:22And that they would have an area.
15:24And it is ironic that that area, that fortress, actually became a Jewish stronghold
15:29against the Romans just 70 years later.
15:32And so what we're looking at over here, we are on the roof of the temple itself.
15:36A place where almost nobody on earth has ever been to except for us and a few priests.
15:42And we are going up and over here, we can see a large room.
15:46And that if we actually turn back, we'll see even more compartments.
15:50When you see the purple tapestry, that marks off the Holy of Holies is right below that section.
15:56And we'll get there in just a moment.
15:58As we ascend even higher and higher, you can get to the tippy top of the temple itself.
16:03And we see more storage areas.
16:05This was a real place and it needed real storage.
16:08I really like how they included so many storage areas.
16:11I tried getting to the top roof on the app.
16:14But for some reason, I wasn't able to get there.
16:17If you download the app and you're able to get there,
16:20please let me know what is on the top of the tippy top roof.
16:24But now let's turn back to what for me is my favorite part of this entire app.
16:28When I was a young boy, I remember learning about this.
16:32And what we see here, we are on top of the Holy of Holies itself.
16:35And you see some cool contraptions.
16:37And that's because what we are doing here are lowering priests down into the Holy of Holies
16:44inside a box.
16:46Now, these priests are not allowed in the Holy of Holies.
16:48But there's a problem.
16:49What happens if you need to clean it?
16:51What happens if an animal goes in there and dies?
16:54What happens if something spills and leaks into it?
16:58What are you going to do?
16:59So these priests would be led down almost Mission Impossible style.
17:03But their feet would not touch the ground.
17:05And they would be surrounded by this box to kind of protect them from the Holy of Holies itself.
17:10And this for me was the most exciting part of this entire app.
17:16Now that we're leaving this other area of the Holy of Holies,
17:19let's head all the way down.
17:21And I want to show you two chambers.
17:24And with that, we'll end.
17:25These two chambers are found alongside either the courtyard of the priests
17:30or the courtyard of the Israelites.
17:32We are leaving God's house, the Beit HaMikdash, the house of holiness.
17:36And we are in the courtyard of the priests.
17:39There is a chamber at the very back of the courtyard of the priests
17:43that is known as Beit HaMokkad, the house of the hearth.
17:47And we can see that fire burning right there.
17:50It actually has four compartments.
17:51So let's take a look at it.
17:53The first one are for the lambs that we can see, the lambs that would be for the sacrifice.
17:58The second area is where the breads that would be presented in the heichal, in the sanctuary,
18:04where are those breads baked?
18:05They are baked right here in the Beit HaMokkad, the house of the hearth.
18:09Here we're passing some clothing where you would get your clothing to wear as a priest.
18:14And here we see a nice large fire to keep the space warm.
18:18Notice how here there actually is a roof, something interesting for the chambers.
18:23And where would the priests sleep?
18:25Well, they would sleep right here.
18:27You didn't go home after your day's service in the temple.
18:30You would sleep right here.
18:31And the App Maker made some very nice beds.
18:35And people would have been sleeping on the floor as well.
18:37There would have been many, many, many priests here, especially at the time of the holidays.
18:43Now, where did the priests eat?
18:44Hey, here it is, right here.
18:46The app developers made some really nice picnic tables.
18:49This is where the bread and the meat from all of those sacrifices,
18:52this is where it would be eaten and enjoyed by the priests themselves.
18:56We now come to the third section of this area.
19:00And those are the stones from the altar that was defiled in the days of the Hasmoneans, the Chashmonaim.
19:07And finally, remember those cisterns I told you about, all the water on the Temple Mount?
19:13This actually is an area where the priests themselves would go to the Mikvah.
19:17And just like we said, you enter on the right, and here we are in the water.
19:22We dip, completely submerge yourself, and emerge pure on the right.
19:27And so this was basically the main area for the priests to live, to eat, to bathe.
19:34This is where it all went down for the priests.
19:37And here's a convenient door which allowed the priests to leave the Temple Courts itself,
19:41and enter into the Court of the Gentiles.
19:44Now we're going to leave the House of the Hearth, and we should be leaving the Court of the Priests,
19:48but for some reason, maybe having to do with symmetry,
19:51the app maker has what I'm about to show you connected to the Court of Priests,
19:56but it was in all likelihood connected to the Court of the Israelites.
20:00So this door would have been slightly more to the left.
20:03But what we see over here is a door to a large room, which is the chamber of hewn stone.
20:10We see some benches, and over here you can see the stone from the Temple Mount itself.
20:15And this is where the rabbis would sit and judge cases, and this was known as the Sanhedrin.
20:22And this is where important figures such as Rabbi Gamliel would have heard cases,
20:27and all the leaders, especially those rabbis, would have voted and decided.
20:31And now our journey is coming to an end.
20:33We are leaving the Temple itself.
20:35We are now passing past the chael, and then we're going to pass that fence, the sereg,
20:41into the Court of the Gentiles.
20:43In front of us is that grand royal portico that Herod built.
20:46For those of you who are wondering where is the Wailing Wall, the Kotel, the Western Wall,
20:51where might that be?
20:52That is to the right of us right now as we are exiting.
20:55And we are heading to the second set of the Hulda Gates.
20:59We entered on the right, and we will be exiting on the left.
21:03At this point, a special thank you to the app developers, Immersive History,
21:08for this phenomenal, phenomenal resource, this free resource.
21:12It's really phenomenal.
21:13Thank you so much.
21:14I know the group is a Christian group involved in outreach.
21:18And I just want to say as a Jewish person,
21:20I found that this was very accurate and had a great deal of Jewish history in it as well.
21:26So a very special thanks to them for showing this temple.
21:29Thank you for coming on this tour with me.
21:31Thank you for sharing your sacrifice.
21:33I hope you enjoyed this tour of Jerusalem.
21:36If you are interested in studying the world of the Tanakh or Biblical Hebrew,
21:41come study with me at the Institute of Biblical Culture.
21:44I teach Biblical Hebrew classes every few months.
21:47A new class starts.
21:48So come study with me.
21:49I would love to see you there.
21:51And until then, Shalom and enjoy your time in Jerusalem.
21:58Do you feel free to enjoy your area?
22:00Are you envenue?
