00:00Do Europe's youth support democracy?

00:07Although 57% of young Europeans back democracy over any other form of government,

00:1248% believe democracy in their country is at risk.

00:16These are the findings from a YouGov poll of 6,703 young Europeans from these countries, aged between 16 and 26 years old.

00:25Support for democracy was highest among young Germans, with 71% backing the political system,

00:31while polls showed the lowest levels of support at 48%.

00:35Despite a majority in favour of democracy, 21% said that under certain circumstances

00:40they would favour an authoritarian government over a democratic one.

00:43Presented with the statement the EU is a good idea but it is very poorly implemented,

00:47more than half agreed with this stance.

00:50However, 53% of Europe's youth said they believe the EU affords too much attention to trivial matters.

00:55Surveyed youth said they believe the EU's key priority should be tackling the cost of living crisis,

00:59expanding defence against external threats and improving business conditions.

01:03Compared to four years ago, a rising number of young people in surveyed countries

01:07classified themselves as politically right of centre, rising from 14 to 19%.

01:12Young Europeans have also become more critical of immigration, with 38% believing it should be more restricted,

01:18up from 26% in 2021.

01:21However, EU membership is not up for debate.
