00:00Dominique Thorne, I have seen all of the first three episodes of Ironheart.
00:06I love it. We have so much to discuss.
00:13How did this even come about? When did you even first hear about it?
00:18I first heard about this in 2020. It was the pandemic.
00:24I go back to where my parents are staying in Delaware.
00:27And about a month after being there, I get a phone call from Nate Moore.
00:31Oh, yeah. Mr. Moore.
00:34He lets me know that they want to bring the character of Ironheart to life.
00:38That they want to introduce her in Wakanda Forever.
00:41With that being the lead up to this television series.
00:45And asked if I would play her!
00:48It is funny. I mean, so like a five year arc to this.
00:53Okay, well, some things are worth waiting for.
00:56It's mind-blowing for me. It's a beautiful full circle.
01:00I gotta tell you, and I'm so grateful.
01:03In the world of Ironheart, how does Riri Williams wind up in the situation that we find her at the beginning?
01:11When we see her in Wakanda Forever, she is very much in her own world.
01:18She knows that this is probably not a place where she's gonna learn and grow and all of that by the traditional means.
01:24And so we see her, like, hustling these kids for their money, doing homework, all of that.
01:29And it's not until the Wakandans come along that she realizes her work, her tinkering, has larger implications.
01:36Like, for folks beyond her.
01:38And I think it really took that entire journey for her to realize, I can impact people.
01:45I can affect the world.
01:48Wild.
01:49And now she kind of has to reckon with that.
01:51Now she has been forced to go back home.
01:54And I think it almost always takes a going back home.
01:58I don't know.
01:59It's really forced the reflection that we might be running away from, you know?
02:04I love that.
02:05And getting booted out of MIT and then saying, yeah, but not without my tech.
02:09And then for me, just watching.
02:11I see you blow out of the lobby.
02:14I think this may be the premier character in the MCU that's from Chicago.
02:21And I go, oh my God, how has it taken this long?
02:22And I love it.
02:24And it's such an important city.
02:26And it's so all over this series.
02:30These first episodes, well, the whole show wouldn't be what it is if you hadn't gone.
02:34She didn't go seeking this hero mantle at all.
02:39She started pursuing it for very different reasons.
02:43You know, we see in the comics that she took the name because of how she lost her best friend
02:48and her father, like a gunshot wound to the heart.
02:50And that is where this, the need and the desire to kind of cloak herself, protect herself,
02:57protect her community, you know, where all of that came from.
03:01And that to me is super familiar with Mr. Tony Stark over there wanting to cloak the world in a suit of armor.
03:09And her, like the focus is super, super, there's a nucleus there for her.
03:14It's her community, her home, it's Chicago.
03:17She's not really thinking beyond that.
03:19Now she's forced to.
03:21I love that too because, you know, his journey really starts when one of his own weapons explodes
03:26and he gets a piece of shrapnel lodged in his heart.
03:29And now this iteration where the heart is something that is not only going home,
03:35but also this whole thing of disparity and inequity and knowing that she can only do as much as she can do.
03:43I don't want to give away too much, but they really are twin flames.
03:46And it's really fun watching in episode one, which, by the way, must have been a bear to shoot
03:51because you have to completely introduce the character.
03:55You have to quickly get through her story of how she winds up back home.
03:58And then you're introducing all these characters and your mom, Ronnie, Angie White, who's fantastic.
04:04Baby, get in here.
04:06And I see you have this little kind of like coven of support and then Xavier.
04:13Here again?
04:14Good morning to you too.
04:15Is that Matthew Elam?
04:17Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:18He's awesome.
04:20And then, of course, you are haunted and helped.
04:24Right.
04:25By Natalie.
04:28Natalie?
04:30Well, who the hell else would it be, bish?
04:34I just want to know a little bit about in episode one.
04:36Like when you were doing that, were you going like, oh my God.
04:39Because you run the whole gamut of an MCU film in 40 minutes.
04:44It's bananas.
04:45And it's really interesting too because it gets more and more complicated and it all happens
04:49really quick.
04:50I think of Riri Williams as kind of almost like a founder looking for a way to keep her
04:55enterprise afloat.
04:57And it's what she's done with the Ironheart suit.
05:01It's what she's hoping to do and the support she has at home.
05:06It's Xavier's a bit of a conscience and he just reminds you of where we are from and what
05:12our values are.
05:13When you're ready for the respect and the money you deserve, come work for me.
05:19When the hood gives you a bit of an offer you can't refuse once you're recruited and
05:24get the business card, it's this really tough thing to play, which is like, wait a minute.
05:29Am I going to go over to the slightly larcenous side so I can keep doing what I need to do
05:35to be the founder and the CEO of this?
05:38I honestly really, really bought it.
05:40And I almost feel like if you hadn't been booed out of MIT, the institution of, you know,
05:46tech and learning and all that, I just think that's a really cool framing of it.
05:51But then so much more even happens just in the first episode and you're in the hood.
05:57Vital signs indicate corporeal overload.
05:59You're doing so much tech work, you're soldering, you're doing all the stuff.
06:03And again, it was just reminding me of all of those things that I had to do for the first
06:07Oh my gosh.
06:08So you always have suits and pieces of practical suits around you.
06:13Yes.
06:13Did you ever have like a little spot welding lesson or the person?
06:17Yes, absolutely.
06:19Oh my God.
06:20I got to tell you, it took me probably like a solid 20 minutes to get that first take in
06:27the hood down.
06:28Trevor, stabilize the cabin pressure.
06:30I need some more air.
06:31Okay, Raimi.
06:32I literally could not believe that I was doing this.
06:37I felt that was, that to me was probably the moment of like, whoa, this is real.
06:44Like this is, this is Iron Man.
06:47This is Tony Stark.
06:48This is the HUD.
06:50This is insane.
06:51And there's definitely BTS of it somewhere about me just losing my mind and laughing and
06:58trying to just get it together.
06:59Like, okay, this is real.
07:01Sure.
07:01I guess.
07:02So much in this first episode sets up about anxiety.
07:07This generation having to do with anxiety of the information age.
07:10And the way you set it up is just literally got a ton of heart.
07:14And I found myself very entertained by it and wondering what was going to happen next.
07:18And then we introduced Joe McGillicuddy, who you have a reason, and I won't go through all
07:26the machinations, but you kind of have him a little bit over a barrel.
07:29If you don't work with me here, the FBI gets a call from a concerned neighbor.
07:36And you rot in federal prison.
07:39And he brings you to this place where, in this silo where there's all this tech, winds up
07:45becoming very pertinent because in episode two, I call it the Chaka Khan tunnel heist
07:53three hand sequence, which is just great.
07:56By the way, the soundtrack and the music.
07:59Chicago, come alive.
08:01It's Chicago, but I also feel Nate Moore.
08:03I also feel Ryan.
08:04And I feel the, I feel the Black Panther energy in this.
08:10And then there's this huge cliffhanger at the end of episode two.
08:16What do you remember about that whole sequence?
08:19Because it's very daunting.
08:23That was probably also one of the most fun scenes to shoot for the, for the top half,
08:28because it is so high intensity and quick and fast.
08:31And we're also, this is like the first time Riri gets to just like flex what she's good
08:37at since getting kicked out and, and, and coming back to Chicago.
08:41And, you know, this is the first time she just, she just gets to do, um, without any of
08:47the noise.
08:48Um, so it's, it was fun.
08:50It was cool.
08:51And, and, and also just getting to see, okay, like, you know, she's, she's, she's getting
08:57to know all these people.
08:58She's, she's sussing it out and she's enjoying herself.
09:00Okay.
09:01Maybe this is not so bad.
09:03It also feels like a nice breath of fresh air before the ride that we, that we're, we're,
09:09you know, we're in for, for the, for the rest of the show.
09:12But you kind of follow your less than optimum instincts into doing business with this merry
09:20band of kind of misfit thieves that are also all really just, uh, deserve a great shout
09:26out.
09:27And then, um, by the end of episode two, it starts to get a little bit serious because
09:33there's an aggressive security guard who catches you after you've done this.
09:37Just put the gun down.
09:38Get down or I'll shoot!
09:41And blood is dropped.
09:43And really what's interesting is that Ramos's character, the hood, who can do all kinds of
09:49stuff.
09:49We're starting to wonder who is this guy really?
09:52And he kind of, kind of saves your life.
09:56Okay.
09:57Yeah.
09:58I think.
10:01You're a bit indebted.
10:02So what does that do to the conflict that Riri's feeling with where her loyalties are at that
10:08point?
10:08I wonder.
10:09Yeah.
10:09I mean, from the time she meets this guy, it's like, okay, here's this incredibly charismatic
10:16man from, you know, a city that is familiar to me.
10:21He's coming from a place I know, I understand.
10:23And he's saying all of the things that I've been saying that I've been thinking about for
10:28the past, since the top of the show, you know, here, this guy comes along saying,
10:32like, why don't you have this?
10:35And why don't you have that?
10:36And don't you think that you deserve to be doing all of this?
10:39I couldn't believe that after episode two, that episode three actually gets more jazzy
10:45and out of control and hectic.
10:47And really, you're doing kind of almost a little bit of like cat burglar spy work.
10:53I'm noticing in that whole sequence with what's going on up on top of that, where all the
10:59action's happening and, and you're having to escape.
11:02And then were you claustrophobic in that, in that shaft that you were in when everything
11:08starts?
11:08Oh my God, that was insane.
11:10But I honestly think I was more nervous doing the little underwater swimming up to the tunnel.
11:18Wow.
11:19That was crazy.
11:20That was really what it was for me.
11:22Episode three is like your permission impossible.
11:25Yeah.
11:25There's nothing in that episode that you're underwater, you're in tunnels, you're hiding,
11:30you're sneaking, you're trying to get information.
11:33I think episode three might be my favorite episode.
11:36Wow.
11:37It says something very distinct about who Riri Williams and so Ironheart can become in the
11:45MCU.
11:46I think when we meet her, when we're introduced to her, it feels very clear, oh, this is going
11:53to be another superhero.
11:55But then as we continue to get further and further into these episodes, we're like, wait,
12:02hold on.
12:03Is she?
12:04Like, what, where is this going?
12:06Even my, my boy, Alden Ehrenreich is starting to reveal that he's kind of not who he's saying
12:14he is, that's going to lead to something.
12:15So, suffice it to say, for the first three episodes of a series with really introducing
12:23a character, I got the hook, I've got the heart, the support has come out of the woodwork
12:30with this, this, this ensemble cast around you.
12:33Yes, it has.
12:35Angie White.
12:36My goodness, because that's so essential, is for Riri Williams to have a solid home base.
12:46If, if Angie wasn't there, if the home wasn't as warm and, and artistic and thoughtful as
12:54it is, I don't know that we could endure all the chaos and all the spiraling that we see
13:00Riri going through.
13:01Well, I mean, look, I thought we were going to have a quick little, like, five or seven
13:05minutes, and there's so much to talk about.
13:07So, now as these three episodes are going to be out and viewable, we're going to let
13:15that blow everyone's mind, and then we'll check back in later, if you like, as we watch
13:20along some more.
13:21Oh, man, I gotta know what you think by the end.
13:23I have to, I have to.
13:25All right, well, you keep kicking ass out there.
13:28Again, well done so far.
13:29You, you've really, yeah, you've really done us proud.
13:32Thank you, sir.
13:33Thank you.
13:34Oh, my goodness.
13:35I appreciate it.
13:36All right, Dominique.
13:37Talk soon.
13:39Bye.
13:41We can make something legit.
13:45Think about the possibilities.
