If you’ve ever thought, “what if I LIVED really deep underwater?”

That’s what the US Navy did here! It was called SEALAB and to live down there, “aquanauts” had to breathe air with a lot of helium, which makes you sound… SQUEAKY

They got a call from the President, and sounded like this…

It was part of basically an underwater space race! But the project shut down because the deep ocean was harder than space in some ways…

00:00If you've ever thought, what if I lived really, really deep underwater?
00:04That's what the U.S. Navy did here.
00:06It was called Sea Lab, and to live down there,
00:08the aquanauts had to breathe air with a lot of helium.
00:12Which makes you sound like this.
00:13They got a call from the president, and it sounded like this.
00:16Do you read the order?
00:17Let's say, Mr. President, that we're not in prayer.
00:21It was part of basically an underwater space race.
00:24But the project got shut down because the deep ocean is harder than space in some ways.
00:29In space, the pressure is effectively zero.
00:31A structure doesn't have to resist external forces.
00:34In the deep ocean, though, the pressure goes up by the weight of a whole atmosphere every 10 meters.
00:38So there's a risk of...
00:40It's dangerous.
00:42But someone did break the record for living underwater for 120 days.
00:45We're making more videos about the deep ocean, so subscribe.
