00:24Walt Disney decided to add a more modern train to the park in 1957.
00:28What was modern then, though, hardly looks modern now.
00:31And so the inelegant Viewliner is usually remembered as one of the oddest contraptions to ever run on Disneyland tracks.
00:37The new Bob Gurr designed train had lots of similarity to other vehicles.
00:41The not-quite-figure-8 track, for instance, was only 30 inches wide.
00:45The same as Casey's and the Mine Train tracks.
00:48The Viewliner's sponsor, Hatchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad,
00:52as it was for Disneyland's Mine Train and Disneyland Railroad.
00:56The cab on the front car was a cut-down version of a 54 Oldsmobile 88,
01:01which meant a height of under six feet, two swinging car doors, a windshield like a car,
01:06and a semblance of a car's blunt nose and headlight assembly.
01:10Inside the Viewliner's cab, the engineer shifted gears with an automobile clutch and drove with a steering wheel.
01:16A strong, gas-powered V8 engine from a Chevy Corvette could accelerate the train to about 30 miles an hour
01:23and pull five cars behind the locomotive.
01:25When the Viewliner debuted as a B-ticket attraction in Disneyland's third summer,
01:29it had two complete trains, one blue and one red, running on the same track.
01:33There were stations in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, with each train operating from just one.
01:38Gurr was still putting out fires literally the morning of the Viewliner premiere.
01:42The two locomotives weighed 5,000 pounds each.
01:45This is the station of the Santa Fe and Disneyland Viewliner,
01:50the fastest miniature train in the world and one of the newest additions to the Magic Kingdom.
01:57The Streamlined Viewliner will take you on a round-trip tour of both Fantasyland and Tomorrowland
02:04over the trestles and bridges of the Whitewater Rapids and Tomorrowland Lake.
02:09The Viewliner, the only train of its kind in the world, speeds past Lookout Mountain, Junior Autopia,
02:17over Fantasyland River, past Senior Autopia on its journey through Tomorrowland,
02:24home of the Astrojet and the rocket to the moon, passes under the towering skyway and returns to this station.

02:42Among the newest attractions in Tomorrowland are the fast, sleek Viewliners, the commuter trains of the future.
02:52And at the controls of this one is our host, Walt Disney.
02:56Walt has logged plenty of miles on all of the Disneyland trains.
03:00And since this is a special occasion, he'll be our special engineer.
