Queensland's Darling Downs Zoo has re-opened two days after a woman lost her arm after being mauled by a lion. The woman is from New South Wales and is a family member of the zoo's owners. She's been visiting the zoo for 20 years and was well aware of safety precautions.
00:00Carloads of families have returned to the Darling Downs Zoo wanting to show support for the embattled operators.
00:09It's good to see that they're opening up and people can just get on with their lives and hopefully the person who was involved with the incident will recover.
00:18The family owned zoo can't understand how the woman in her 50s was mauled by a lioness on Sunday.
00:24We're very raw. We're still processing in our minds and coming to grips with not just what happened but what happens next.
00:32We've now got a lovely lady whose life has been altered.
00:37Steve Robinson is devastated. The victim is his sister-in-law.
00:41He says she was not inside the lion's holding enclosure when she was attacked and that she could have bled to death if it wasn't for a zookeeper who knew first aid.
00:50She did save her life. She actually took my wife's leather belt off and applied a tourniquet very quickly.
00:59The first aid kit was there. We wrapped her up in a thermal blanket and the paramedics locally were here very, very quickly indeed.
01:09She remains in the PA hospital in a stable condition.
01:12The woman who teaches in New South Wales has been visiting her sister here for 20 years.
01:18She's also a keen photographer and has been taking shots of the animals and turning those into Christmas calendars.
01:24Emotionally, both her and my wife are on a roller coaster. It's the great unknown at the moment.
01:31Mr Robinson said the lions were not aggressive but always playful.
01:35There are times like this when you wonder why do you keep going.
01:41And when you get that support, we're very lucky to be in a community like this.
01:49Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is continuing to investigate.
01:53so if you prefer and you decide to enter the world, make a carpool and the police station are struggling.
01:57We're lucky to see!
01:58Our Dearborn has been a young man.
02:00You're lucky to see!
