Queensland's Darling Downs Zoo has re-opened two days after a woman lost an arm in a lion attack. It's now known the victim is from New South Wales and is the sister-in-law of the zoo's owner.
00:00The woman in her 50s remains in a stable condition in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital but is heavily sedated.
00:09Zoo owner Steve Robinson confirmed today the woman is his sister-in-law and has been coming here to the zoo for 20 years where she's been taking photos of the animals.
00:18Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating how this incident occurred but have been unable to speak with the woman.
00:25Mr Robinson says he's also unsure how his sister-in-law was bitten as she wasn't in the enclosure where the lines were being kept at the time but she is lucky to be alive.
00:35And slightly further away fortunately, very fortunately, was one of our keepers who's well versed in first aid.
00:42She did save her life. She actually took my wife's leather belt off and applied a tourniquet.
00:50Very quickly the first aid kit was there, we wrapped her up in a thermal blanket and the paramedics locally were here very very quickly indeed.
01:01Police of course and the life flight helicopter arrived and took her through to the hospital in Brisbane.
01:08There's been a stream of support from the local community here today with the car park full of families eager to visit their beloved zoo.
01:15There are times like this when you wonder why do you keep going and when you get that support not just people visiting which is wonderful I mean look at the car park here it's wonderful but when they bring those little extras.
01:35People up here are people who care and we're very lucky to be in a community like this.
01:42Some have even brought chocolates and homemade cookies to give to the staff as they come to terms with what's happened.
