00:30Welcome to the Australian Silo Art Trail on Life With No Anchor.
00:41Today, we're exploring the vibrant and playful silo art at Lake Albacuchia,
00:47located just 10 kilometres north of Rainbow in northwest Victoria.
00:52Completed in May 2021, this striking artwork marks an important addition
00:57to the Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail.
01:01It's the first silo in Hinmarsh Shire to join this celebrated outdoor art gallery
01:06that's transforming rural Australia.
01:09The artist behind this colourful masterpiece is Melbourne's Kit Bennett,
01:14who brought a deeply personal vision to these towering concrete canvases.
01:19Bennett was inspired by childhood memories of country life,
01:22specifically exploring the bush and hunting for yabbies.
01:26What makes this artwork so distinctive is its deliberate departure from realism.
01:32As Bennett explains, I wanted to keep the artwork somewhat surreal and distorted from reality,
01:39much like the nature of stories from the past.
01:41They often become exaggerated.
01:44The mural features a boy on a dirt bike and a woman with a yabby.
01:49Imagery that perfectly captures those nostalgic childhood adventures in rural Australia.
01:56Bennett chose a palette bursting with bright colours,
02:00intentionally reflecting the rainbow theme of the nearby town,
02:03while creating a striking contrast with the surrounding landscape.
02:06I wanted to make this painting very bright and full of colour
02:11in an attempt to reflect the rainbow theme
02:13and to separate it from its environment, Bennett shares.
02:17The silo itself is old,
02:19but the artwork aims to breathe new life into the landscape.
02:24The Alba Kutia Silo occupies a strategic position
02:27in the expanding silo art trail,
02:30creating an important tourism link between the Yariambiak silos
02:34and the West Wimmera silos.
02:36This project was made possible through funding
02:39from the Victorian State Government
02:41as part of the Wimmera Southern Malley Destination Management Plan,
02:46with support from Wimmera Malley Tourism
02:48and Hindmarsh Shire Council.
02:52Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor Ron Ismay praised Bennett's work,
02:56noting,
02:57The vivid colours and style add a distinctive modern take on the silo art trail.
03:04It is great to see the fun of growing up in the Malley represented in the art,
03:08along with a nod to Lake Alba Kutia's past as a great place to catch yabbies.
03:13Visitors can enjoy this spectacular artwork from a designated viewing area,
03:18where information signage provides context about both the artwork and the broader silo art trail.
03:24There's even an augmented reality experience being developed
03:27to enhance the quirky, playful nature of Bennett's creation.
03:32As you stand here taking in these towering figures against the vast Malley sky,
03:36you're witnessing more than just art.
03:39You're experiencing a celebration of rural childhood,
03:42community pride,
03:43and the creative transformation of agricultural infrastructure into cultural landmarks.
