Hasta ahora el canciller alemán, Friedrich Merz, mantiene una relación cordial con Donald Trump, el presidente de Estados Unidos. Pero, ahora que se aproxima la fecha límite del 9 de julio para concretar un acuerdo arancelario, la relación de los dos líderes se pone a prueba.

00:02It appears German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has managed what few leaders can claim.

00:06He's hit it off with U.S. President Donald Trump.

00:09First, there was Trump's praise and Merz's gratitude at their Oval Office meeting in June.

00:40And Merz is taking the win.

00:43He's just told a German newspaper that, quote,

00:46Trump clearly had the feeling that the chemistry between us is right.

00:51So, mission accomplished for Merz?

00:53Of course, staying on Trump's good side is key for Germany and Europe.

00:58But fundamental differences on trade tariffs and on how far to support Ukraine are always hanging in the air.

01:06So is everything simply transactional now?

01:09Merz, it seems, is realpolitik in action, unwilling to publicly criticize what he cannot change anyway.

01:15And where he feels Trump hasn't quite made up his mind yet, he treads unusually carefully for the leader

01:22of the world's third-largest economy.

01:24I have again, in regard to the situation in Ukraine, our real wish to come to the American side,

01:33to come to the other sanctions against Russia.

01:35On getting a trade deal, Merz's expectations are low, while the stakes are high,

01:40as the EU could face 50% tariffs unless there's a trade deal by the 9th of July.
