00:00July 4th to a degree has been ruined. Why? Not the fireworks. Oh, not the barbecue. Not Joey Chestnut hitting the under. I mean, whatever on Joey Chestnut. I did watch. I was forced to watch. I was staying at a house that wanted to watch. And so I can get into the hilarity of it. I don't get into the hot dog eating of it. I mean, did you watch? Did you watch the guy like the announcers?
00:24Of the Shea brothers. The buildup of these. It's incredible. That's the comedy. Yeah, exactly. Ladies and gentlemen, it is Jim. Jim from Rhode Island. Like, what are we doing? But anyway, yeah, there's nothing wrong with all of that. You know what's wrong? There's no cool breaking news out of the NBA anymore. No.
00:44And what the NBA, I've decided, has done is they've officially become. You ever watch any of those movies that are all like abstract, like a Leo DiCaprio movie or, you know, Invictus or maybe that's the wrong title. That one. Inception. Inception. That's the one I'm looking for. Thank you.
01:02You sit down and watch Inception. And I almost get annoyed halfway through because I'm like, look, I'm smart enough to maybe follow this, but I can tell that you're trying to make it confusing. And it's like, why? Why do you do that? That's not, in my opinion, that's not good American content. That's not what I'm here to do. I'm not here to be confused. I'm not here to think really hard.
01:27If I wanted to do that, I can go to school. I can go to work. I can get a desk job if that's what I want to do. But the fun area is supposed to be easy to consume. And the NBA has become impossible to consume in the offseason because a nobody understands what the hell's going on. Yep. And B teams are not able to do any of the things that they actually want to do. Yeah. Because everybody's just following a stupid CBA and trying to get rid of money. That seems to be the only thing anyone's trying to do.
01:56Instead of, you know, July 4th, Kevin Durant, the big news, he's in the Hamptons, he has meetings, and then boom. And then in the subsequent years, free agency starts and it's like, ping, ping, ping. Guys are flying all over the place and deals are getting done and the rest of it. And now here we sit because of the CBA collective bargaining agreement and all the belt tightening out there. You've got these players that teams actually like their own players who are restricted free agents.
02:21And the teams are reluctant to give them money because they don't want to get into the tax or into the apron and all the rest of it. And so you're right, Mark. It should be a lot more exciting and it should be a lot more fun.
02:33But instead, as an NBA fan, you're stuck reading through the CBA to figure out what apron might come in and why can't this player go here and there.
02:41And a 17 trade happens basically, you know, with not much moving around like brother, I would almost love to throw this out to our callers.
02:51And if somebody, I'd love to see someone try to do it, like here's my five-team parlay.
02:57Okay.
02:58Okay?
02:59Call in right now.
03:00888-957-9570.
03:03If you can explain, A, the luxury tax.
03:07B, the first apron.
03:10C, the second apron.
03:12Uh-oh.
03:13D, bird rights.
03:15And E, a trade exception.
03:18Go ahead.
03:19Call us.
03:20I dare you.
03:20I dare you.
03:21It'll be so fun.
03:22Right?
03:22It'll be so fun to sit here and listen to someone give us decimal points and all of this stupidity.
03:30I don't know why it didn't come to me until this year.
03:33But I don't ever want to be on the trade machine again because I don't care if the money matches.
03:39Why does the money have to match?
03:41The Giants just took on $300 million in exchange for a chip at Cash Creek Casino.
03:48And nobody, oh, the money's, no, the money doesn't have to match.
03:52We're all adults.
03:54If you want this and I want that, we trade.
03:57That's it.
03:59That's it.
03:59Instead, now Kevin Durant gets traded to the Rockets, but we find out a week and a half
04:04later that a quarter of the league was involved in this.
04:08Right.
04:08And people were trading things.
04:11I mean, I haven't heard of 90% of the players who changed rosters.
04:17Other people are getting second-round draft picks.
04:19Turns out the Warriors are receiving in a trade someone they drafted.
04:23I mean, like, what?
04:25I don't know, man.
04:26I thought this was fun.
04:28This used to be fun.
04:29You have something I want.
04:31I have something you want.
04:32Let's trade.
04:34Why don't we go back to that?
04:37Yeah.
04:37Because this has lost me.
04:38No, the horses left the barn and there's no way you can undo it.
04:42In a league where you've got the cap and then you've got the tax and then the apron,
04:47as you're saying, and Bird writes, you laid that out pretty hysterically because I can
04:52Google all of it and still probably not know fully exactly what's going on with that.
04:58And, you know, basically make it simple.
05:00Is Kaminga going to be a Warrior or not?
05:02And if they want to keep him, do they have to sign and trade?
05:06And you only get half the money back in a sign and trade.
05:09And so, can he play on the qualifying offer, the QO, or can you extend him?
05:14You have to give him at least three years if you want to do a sign and trade.
05:17Start to get triggered listening to this.
05:19Exactly.
05:19Yeah.
05:20Like, Warriors, if you like Kaminga, then he plays basketball for you.
05:23Right.
05:23It shouldn't be this hard.
05:24And if somebody else wants him more than you do and wants to give you something cool for it,
05:28then do that.
05:29But instead, this is what the NBA has created.
05:32Hey, Warrior fans, are you having fun?
05:36Isn't this great?
05:36Did you see our numbers the day free agency started?
05:41It's through the roof.
05:42Everybody's dialing in.
05:44Wow.
05:44What are the Warriors going to do?
05:46Two weeks later, the answer is nothing.
05:49Right.
05:49Nothing.
05:50We're just going to sit here.
05:52I know it's only been one week.
05:54But, like, we're just going to sit here and be told that now, like, I don't know,
06:00Dunleavy's got a desk at the Thomas and Mack Center next week,
06:04and people from other teams are going to come to it,
06:07and they're going to talk some more.
06:09And what?
06:10To what end?
06:11What are we going to get out of this?
06:13And that's my other favorite one.
06:15Oh, you do a sign-and-trade, you only get 50% on the dollar.
06:18Yep.
06:19But not all sign-and-trades.
06:21Just some sign-and-trades.
06:23This would be one of them.
06:24Not all sign-and-trades.
06:25Because, again, explain this to me like I'm five,
06:29because I kind of feel right now like I'm five.
06:32Yeah, and instead of just explain it to me like I'm five,
06:35it would be better if this just all simply went away.
06:38Like, you're saying baseball.
06:39That's the great example.
06:40It's like, okay, whatever the contract is, it's guaranteed.
06:44But baseball does have its arbs and the pre-arb and all the rest of it.
06:48So you can get into some of that.
06:50And, you know, the Super 2, we don't want to start his clock.
06:52And so some of the other business mumbo-jumbo in baseball pops up.
06:57It percolates.
06:58And the other one's the NFL, where there's the guaranteed number,
07:01and then there's the true guaranteed, the injury guaranteed,
07:05guaranteed at signing, prorate the bonus, and all the rest of it.
07:08I just want to put on my TV and watch guys with bats try to hit the ball.
07:13Nate wants to give this a try, I think,
07:15or say something about what we're saying about Nate in San Jose.
07:18Hi, Nate.
07:18Thank you for calling.
07:19What's up?
07:23Hey, Nate, are you there?
07:24Hey, Nate.
07:25Yeah, I'm here.
07:26Okay.
07:27Yeah, we got you, bud.
07:28What's going on?
07:30Yeah, I think the best way I can equate this, like the whole NBA thing,
07:34I want to say is, like, have you ever played the game, Rummy Cube?
07:37I know it.
07:38I don't.
07:39Yes, I know it.
07:40I don't play it.
07:41But, yes.
07:41Basically, Rummy, you've got five players, whatever you've got.
07:44Everyone's got pieces.
07:45They're down on the board.
07:45And you've got to take pieces, but you've got to replace them.
07:48And you've got to make them all match.
07:49And it's like trying to explain this to my five-year-old son
07:52or my nine-year-old grandma.
07:53It really doesn't make sense to them.
07:55And I think that's the best equation I can get to, like,
07:58how hard it is to make these trades in the NBA is that you're pulling
08:03or replacing.
08:03And, like, you can get through all this and be like, yeah,
08:05I got it all perfect in my head and it all works out.
08:08And then you go to make it and just one thing's off just a little bit.
08:12They're just tough to make.
08:13And, I don't know, when you guys were talking about that,
08:15that was just the best way I could kind of equate how you make that NBA trade
08:19with all these 17-team trades and all the stuff you've got to work through.
08:22So, anyway, just thought to my head.
08:24No, definitely.
08:25And the game you just mentioned, like, after talking to you for a minute,
08:28it does not make me want to play that game.
08:29Thank you, Nate.
08:30Is that Rummy Cube?
08:31Whatever.
08:32Yeah, Rummy Cube.
08:33You know, like, this is something that popped.
08:36I said this to Ephraim last night.
08:37We were talking a little bit about this.
08:39And, like, you ever do these – you ever in a fantasy –
08:41and I don't even know if our league is like this.
08:43Lucas, do we need trades to be approved?
08:46Do we have to be approved?
08:48That's why I knew why I like this league.
08:50No approval.
08:50It's the stupidest thing ever.
08:52We're all in a fantasy league together.
08:54You're an adult.
08:55I'm an adult.
08:57If I want to trade you someone and you want to trade me something,
09:00we get to trade something.
09:01Why do all of our friends get a vote on whether or not it's okay?
09:06That's what the NBA does with everything.
09:08Yeah.
09:10Everything's got to fit into their little box.
09:12It makes it so complicated.
09:13It's awful.
09:14It's awful.
09:15It's awful.
