00:00And the session of the People's Council of the BRICS was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
00:05The debate generated proposals from civil society that were discussed on Sunday at the summit by the leaders of the countries that make up the bloc.
00:12Public and accessible health and education, the fight against hunger, solidarity and counter-hegemonic economic alternatives, peace and sovereignty,
00:23are some of the wishes of the social organizations of the global south, for the bloc of countries that aims to rebalance the planet.
00:30The organizations built their proposals during two days of meetings at the session of the People's Council of the BRICS.
00:39The guidelines are practically the same because the Brazilian issues that were chosen as priorities of the Brazilian presidency are issues that go through the debate of the civil council.
00:47But in the popular civil council, it is from the perspective of the peoples of the global south of the countries that are part of the BRICS.
00:54So the guidelines coincide, but they have a different interpretation and meaning.
01:01The movements aligned their guidelines with those of Brazil's presidency of the BRICS and delivered them to global leaders on Sunday.
01:10So what we've realized is that anything that you discuss outside of the agenda is a talk show.
01:15Because it's not on the agenda, it's not going to be considered anyway.
01:19Your recommendations will be fruitless.
01:22So we then align to the chairship, the agenda of the chairship of the member states.
01:28As in the upper echelon of the BRICS, the diversity of the bloc is a challenge for common projects.
01:36The fight against hunger is one of the focuses of the Brazilian presidency.
01:39There are different problems, and there are a unique problem to Brazil, and a unique problem to Russia, a unique problem to Europa, and South Africa.
01:53The veto of Venezuela's entry into the bloc was one of the most repeated criticisms among the social movements.
02:05The organizations are demanding greater clarity in the criteria for admission of new members of the BRICS.
02:10We, the peoples and social movements of the Bolivarian Republic, are BRICS. We feel BRICS.
02:26We are grateful for the invitation, but at the same time we respectfully request that the veto imposed on our country be eliminated and that our voices not be silenced.
02:34The indigenous peoples, movements, and organizations of our Bolivarian Republic want to be included in the BRICS is our request to this council.
02:52Independence from the dollar and unilateral western sanctions systems is on the horizon.
02:59Bigger use of national currencies would allow for more independence, for not being on the hook of western sanctions and be in a bit in...
03:14The BRICS account for 72% of the world's rare earth reserves and 33% of the planet's agricultural land.
03:23In the midst of the climate debate between the global north and the global south, environmental movements have raised the alarm about the geopolitical dispute over the exploitation of critical minerals.
03:36What concerns us most as territories affected by mining by rare earths is that the territories that are being considered as sacrifice zones are not being considered in the process of debate on climate transition.
03:46For the first time during the global leaders' summit, the demands of the social movements are heard.
03:57The organizations also plan to hold a social summit in Salvador de Bahia in October of this year to give continuity to the construction process.
