Writer/Director Kurdwin Ayub and Actress Nagham Abu Baker talk to Fest Track about inspiration, characterization and context in regards to their film "Moon" playing the Competition section of the 2025 Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Transcript
00:00This is Tim Wasberg, I'm here in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the Red
00:29Sea International Film Festival, now relocated into the historic part of the city, Abbala.
00:36I mean, I'm walking the line in my whole life, and I don't know why I'm doing that with all
00:46my characters in my movies, because they're controversial, they're provocative, and they're
00:51not easy.
00:52From right wing to left wing, people, they will have problems with my stuff, and that's
00:58good.
00:59I never wanted to, I mean, I did, but you're never outside the room in the film, you're
01:05always inside, so I wanted to build the setting and the camera like that, that you're like,
01:10and also it gets wider, the camera lens as well, so you see the room and the, like, keeping
01:16you inside, and you feel it also, and it was very important for me to show this, like, to
01:21make the audience feel the claustrophobia.
01:24Yeah.
01:25But literally, does it make you a better actor doing this movie?
01:28I think it does.
01:29Okay.
01:30I think it does.
01:31Yeah.
01:32Because it got me, like, really into someone who I'm not.
01:37Like, it's the opposite of me, the opposite of how I act in real life, and for me, in the
01:42first experience, it's like, I think it's really good that I did this role, because if
01:49I acted in anything else that's similar to my personality, it would not, like, let me
01:57gain this experience and everything I learned from this movie.
02:02I have a great job offer for the camera.
02:04Yeah, I'll go to the other one and train a little bit.
02:06Where?
02:07She does.
02:08We finally meet.
02:09Yeah.
02:10How's it going?
02:11Good.
02:12Welcome to our home.
02:13We're going to go and meet my sisters.
02:14So maybe she got her arms first, and then we just start with big circles of the shoulders
02:19to the back.
02:20It's a very different story, the second one, because I wanted to make a different
02:28one, because everybody thinks, oh, no, Osana was successful.
02:31Now she has to do Osana, not just better.
02:33And I was thinking, I'm doing something else.
02:36Did you feel, after the first one, expectation?
02:39Yes.
02:40It was really tough.
02:41I had so much pressure.
02:44Not while filmmaking, after finishing the movie, I had this kind of pressure what people
02:50think of me.
02:51And it still is, and it's hard.
02:54Yes, that's true.
02:55So it was easier to get it made, but I was worried about other stuff.
03:00To be honest, I had the character for Sarah, like I had Florentina Holzinger before.
03:07Because you knew her as well.
03:09I knew her, and she was not an MMA fighter.
03:12She's a performance artist who did martial arts in her past.
03:16So when I wrote the story, it was the first in my mind that, oh, I have to cast her.
03:21Yeah, I don't know.
03:22I wanted to make, as you said, it's about violence.
03:26And violence you accept, you want to run away from, you want even to have.
03:33It's a weird thing.
03:35The movie is about violence, yes.
03:37How?
03:38What are you doing?
03:42Everyone here knows about this family.
03:45They are very, very famous for what?
03:47They are kind of bad.
03:49Fuck me.
03:51No, no.
03:52Why are you up with girls?
03:54Yeah, I mean...
03:55Don't be so close.
03:56There are a lot of things I want to explain to you.
04:00In Europe, they, like, see Sarah and her, like, not being able to help and stuff.
04:08And they feel, like, weird, I guess.
04:13And it's like, you know the people in Europe, they're, like, posting stuff on Instagram, how awful every war is and things like this.
04:24Yeah.
04:25And I guess when they see the movie, it's like an answer to their trying to help, but no.
04:32So I know what I want, but I let also a lot of freedom with the improvisation.
04:37Okay.
04:38So...
04:39In terms of what?
04:40In terms of what kind of improvisation?
04:42So when I do a scene, everybody knows what to do.
04:46Like, I give everyone their instructions and their goals for the scene.
04:50Even in the rave part.
04:52Oh, yeah.
04:53They show you, like...
04:55I think that's very smart.
04:57That's very smart from the director, Cordwyn, that it kept shooting in rooms.
05:04And then the flow parts come in, Sarah, and she's in a rave or a club underground.
05:13And all people are coming, like, it's the same.
05:16Yeah.
05:17It's the same.
05:18She's trapped.
05:19Yeah.
05:20So I think that's very smart.
05:23Very different.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Very different than any movie I watched here.
05:28I think they're working very hard.
05:30Okay.
05:31I think the future is here.
05:32Okay.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Wow.
05:35Like, I see Saudi, like, in five, ten years doing the best movies.
05:38Cool.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Because they're doing very well.
05:42Yeah.
05:43Like, they're putting all the effort to grow some young directors and actors.
05:51It's my sisters.
05:52They're playing with me.
05:53You know?
05:54It's all good.
05:55It's all good.
05:56It's all good.
05:57It's all good.
05:58It's all good.
05:59For me, it's like one percentage of the popularity in the Middle East.
06:16And this story can happen everywhere.
06:18Everywhere.
06:19Yeah.
06:20Not the Middle East.
06:21This is not about the Middle East.
06:22This is not about Jordan.
06:23This is not about any family in this world.
06:26It's not specific.
06:27It's something anyone could go through.
06:30Any family could go through.
06:33Anyone can get abused.
06:36People who you know, maybe.
06:40So, I saw it's a story that tells about, like, a small part in the world that doesn't
06:49get that much attention because directors are scared.
06:55She's not scared.
06:56Yeah.
06:57Corden is not scared.
06:58No.
06:59Corden is not scared at all.
07:00I was scared at first to act in a movie like that, especially in the Middle East.
07:06But with all, like, the… I know people will get it.
07:11We'll get that.
07:12It's not about anything.
07:13It's about the story.
07:14It's about telling a story about some girls.
07:18It could be boys.
07:19Yeah.
07:20It could be anything.
07:21Yeah.
07:22A woman, a man, everyone.
07:26Anyone could go through this.
07:27Ah, hey!
07:28Boo!
07:29What is it?
07:30No!
07:32Vivian.
07:34Like I said so.
07:36I heard…
07:37Didn'tszych?
07:38Isis?
07:39Jolene.
07:40Stupid.
07:41We'll see you next time.
